SELENE

Alpha Lucas was going to be overjoyed once I told him the good news that I was pregnant.

I knew that I was the Luna and that meant that I had to carry myself with grace but I was so happy, so excited that I half ran, half walked as I made my way to his study.

Usually, I didn't disturb my love when he was there, it was his personal space but this news could not wait, I could not wait to tell him he was going to become a father!

I pushed open the door without knocking, "Darling, you are not going to believe what I have to tell–" the words hung in my mouth as my eyes widened.

Alpha Lucas' pants were around his ankle and he was balls deep inside another woman, his naked butt clenching viciously as he thrust into her.

The bottle of champagne that I had brought for us to celebrate with fell from my hand and smashed to pieces at my foot, sending glass and red wine flying in every direction.

I looked on, and squinted my eyes, refusing to believe what I was seeing.

The woman was lying with her back on the table and her legs hung around his shoulders.

"Babe!" he stiffened and quickly reached down and pulled up his pants.

I shook my head and stepped backward out of the room and slammed the door.

No, this could not be, I did not just see what I thought I saw, my whole body felt like I was on fire despite being in an air-conditioned hallway.

My heart was beating in my chest furiously and now tears were starting to well up in my eyes. Instinctively, my hand went to my belly and then I ran.

It was as if the hallway walls were closing in on me, trying to trap me within them, I couldn't spend another second here, I needed to get out.

"Honey!" I heard his voice calling me from behind but this just made me run even faster, I needed to put as much space between us as I could.

Oh my goodness! My love did this to me?

How? How did he violate the mate bond like that? I should have known something was wrong, how didn't I? Did the pregnancy somehow affect my ability to sense his emotions?

How could he do this to us, to me, and his baby? This was the highest form of betrayal.

Now the scent of that strange woman was burned into my memory, I could never forget it.

I kept running until I ended up in the woods far beyond our pack. I didn't want anyone to see me cry, as soon as I was certain that I was alone, I broke down and tears flowed freely from me.

This was supposed to be the happiest day of our lives, this was not supposed to be happening, not to me, how could Lucas do this to me? We loved each other more than anything, didn't we?

I had begun to doubt everything.

"There you are!" he said, panting heavily.

I turned around startled to see him there, "Get the hell away from me!" my voice was mingled with grief and anger.

"Babe, babe, please, just let me explain okay, it is not what you think!" he took a step forward.

My eyes widened, "It is not what I think? You were balls deep in another woman! What the hell do you want to explain about that?" I yelled at him, the veins straining in my neck.

Alpha Lucas shook his head, "You weren't supposed to see that babe, I am sorry you had to see that!"

I scoffed in disbelief, "You aren't even sorry, are you? You are just sorry you got caught!"

"Babe, please, forgive me, I promise you, she meant nothing to me," he kept approaching me.

"Stay back!" I warned, raising my arm to keep him at length, "Did you even ever love me?"

"Of course babe, I have loved only you," he said ignoring my warning and coming closer.

I shook my head, "You are a shameless liar, and a cheat, you are not fit to be my alpha!" I sniffled.

"Don't say that babe, I'm sorry, please, give me a second chance!"

I shook my head more furiously, "Fuck you Lucas, fuck you, I am not going to let you hurt me like this and get away with it. The council must hear about this!"

The sympathetic look left his face and his eyes became serious, "What?"

"I am going to dissolve our marriage, you are not fit to be alpha!"

"Babe," there was a dangerous edge to his voice now, "The council does not need to get involved, we can work through this, just give me a second chance!"

I felt so overwhelmed I thought that I was going to pass out at any moment, "I can't deal with you right now."

I walked past him but then he viciously grabbed my arm.

"Let me go, Lucas!" I warned.

"Don't tell the council babe, please."

"Get off me, you and I are officially finished!" I said with finality.

His grip on mine loosened and I freed myself and kept walking out of there, sniffling and pulling myself together, I knew what I needed to do.

I heard his footsteps behind me obviously, he was coming to plead again, I didn't want to hear what he had to say, he had broken my heart, my trust, and our bond.

Without warning, Lucas ran up from behind me and then stabbed me in the stomach.

I gasped as a piercing pain shot through me, Oh No, My baby! I thought in panic.

As my hand went defensively to my belly, I heard him whisper in my ear, "I am sorry," and then his blade cut my throat.

As I lay there bleeding in a pool of my own blood, scared and alone, I muttered a silent prayer.

"Oh Moon goddess, please I do not want to die here like this, please not like this, not when I have been wronged so badly, please, do not let me die here!" I prayed as the life drained out of me and I faded into blackness.

Oh no! I could not believe that the love of my life, Alpha Lucas just did that to me.

There was a tightness in my chest and it felt as if I could not breathe as darkness surrounded me all round.

Disrespecting the mate bond and cheating on me was one thing, but stabbing me? That was unbelievable, how could my mate do that to me, how could my mate hurt me like that?

My eyes flew open and I found myself alone in a narrow canoe that was rowing itself forward towards a pair of black gates.

The water all around me was dark and murky and very still, except for the ripples as my canon cut across heading to its destination.

At first, I was confused, what was going on here? The last thing that I remembered was being stabbed and bleeding out alone and afraid on the forest floor.

My hands flew to my stomach and then my neck I dabbed at them, there was no blood, and my heart was beating heavily in my chest as I looked around in panic.

My jaw dropped as I recognized the landscape from the stories that we had been told... I was dead! This was the River Lana!

The river that took dead souls to the other side, the realization that I was really dead hit me hard and I began to shiver, wrapping my arms around myself as everywhere suddenly felt cold, I was so scared and so alone.

What did I ever do wrong to anybody to deserve such a fate as this?

One minute I had everything that I needed in life and now I had nothing, I was dead! Just like that, my life and my pack had been snatched from me by the man that I trusted above all else.

The man that I called my mate, the man that I chose to lead my pack as Alpha in the absence of my father. How could he do this to me?

It still felt too unreal for me to believe, tears began streaming down my cheeks as I sat there shivering, in the darkness.

A yellow moon in the sky was the only source of light and even that was not doing much, I could see the giant gates in front of me, each row drawing me closer and closer to it.

I sobbed and cleaned my eyes, I could not die and be forgotten like that. Alpha Lucas did not only hurt me, he hurt our baby, my baby... he had to pay for what he had done.

I could not let him do this to me and then go back to that whore.

I wondered what lies he concocted and told everyone concerning me, the panic and fear that I felt earlier were shifting and now I was fuming.

I was no longer afraid, I was angry, I was mad at Alpha Lucas, and I was mad at myself for ever loving a traitor and a betrayer like that.

I was so mad, so pissed off and I needed somewhere to put my anger.

"Lunar, please, grant me my prayer, please give me one more chance, give me a chance to revenge the wrong that has been done to me!" I pleaded as hot tears streamed down my cheeks.

"Lunar will not answer you... but I will," a thin voice sounded out of the darkness.

Fear gripped me again all of a sudden as I looked around, trying to figure out where the voice was coming from.

"Who are you?" my voice shook as I spoke.

"I am Xercer.... The one is willing to grant you your request!" the thin eerie voice responded. It seemed to be blown about by the wind, coming from all directions.

But the problem was that there was no wind, just a chilling cold.

My teeth were chattering when I spoke again, "Can you help me Xercer? Please!"

Lunar had forsaken me, she did not heed my prayer request when I was dying to save my life and now she was turning a deaf ear to my request once more.

I had heard the stories of the evil spirits and demons that appeared along the River Lana to tempt souls with unfinished business, there was no doubt in my mind that this Xercer was one of them.

But I did not care, if Lunar wouldn't answer me, I would take the help of anyone who would, I needed to get back, Alpha Lucas could not be allowed to get away with what he did to me, no, I had to make him pay!

"I will grant you your wish to return and also I will grant you the power to fulfill your heart's desire!" the thin windy voice said.

I was anxious when I heard that, did it really possess the power to do all that?

"What do you want in return?" a part of me wanted to ask. I knew from the stories that nothing went for nothing, but right now I didn't care much about the cost, I just wanted to be returned back to the land of the living so that I could get revenge on Alpha Lucas no matter what!

"Do it!" I said emphatically.

"There is a price that is required on your part," the warning came.

"I don't care what it is, just do it!"

I had already lost everything, what more could be taken from me? I would gladly give if anything it meant me getting my revenge on the bastard that killed me.

"So shall it be!" the voice echoed and then disappeared.

The canoe was still rowing closer to the gate when suddenly I took in a very violent deep breath and then sat up in the grassy field.

I felt so disoriented and confused as I looked around and struggled to get my breathing under control, there was a pool of blood all around me.

"Welcome back, Luna Selene!"

What in the hell just happened right now? There was a serious pounding in my head as I sat there on the floor, heart thumping in my chest, cloth soaked in blood.

Everything felt intense for no reason, the sunlight was too bright for my liking, and the birds were chirping too loudly for my liking.

Even the breeze against my skin felt too harsh for my liking, it was like my sensitivity to everything had increased...

I gasped as my hands flew to my belly, my baby!

If I was brought back, what about my baby, what are the chances that my baby was saved too?

I anxiously felt around my stomach, trying to sense my child within me, was it still alive? I wanted so badly for it to be alive, please, Lunar!

"I told you, Lunar does not heed your requests!" a small windy voice whispered.

It felt more like a thought originating inside my head than an outside voice speaking to me.

I gasped and spun around, this was the second time I had heard it, but there was nobody around me, I was all alone, in a pool of my own blood.

"Who are you?" My voice was hoarse and very weak.

"Do you wish to know that or do you wish to know about your baby?" the internal voice answered.

I gasped and my eyes widened, "Please, tell me that my baby is alright, tell me my baby is safe too!" I prayed for it, I was wishing it into being, please Lunar, let my baby be alright!

"Your baby is dead!" there was no empathy whatsoever behind the voice, it said it as dryly as it said every other thing it said.

"Oh no," I fell on my face and began to sob and whimper, tears poured down my cheeks as I clenched my bloodied stomach in both hands.

This could not be happening, my child was stolen from me, by the father of all people, how could Alpha Lucas be so wicked as to kill his own child?

The cold tip of a sharp blade pressed into my back and my entire body stiffened.

"Get to your feet... slowly!" a deep voice bellowed from behind me.

My cries caught in my throat and I stopped sniffling and suddenly opened my eyes wide. The last of the tear drops rolled down freely and dropped to the forest ground.

Carefully and slowly, just like the voice had instructed, I got to my feet. Who was it? Was Alpha Lucas back to finish the job?

"Turn around... slowly," the voice commanded again.

I could still feel the tip of the blade pressing against my back as I slowly turned around, the pointy edge scraping softly against the fabric of my clothes as I spun.

As soon as I was facing forward, the blade moved quickly from my belly and went to my neck and pressed against it softly but firmly.

My eyes were bloodshot because of all the tears that I had shed and I was burning with anger when I finally looked up at my attacker.

The man was tall, roguishly handsome with a square jaw and long dark hair that fell all the way to the back of his neck.

His most striking feature apart from his face, which seemed to have been crafted by the goddess of beauty herself, was a pair of menacing blue eyes that held my gaze and stared at me with suspicion.

"Who the hell are you and what are you doing here?" he asked in that same deep voice that sent a tingle down my spine.

The blade that he was holding was long, about five inches in length, broad, and had teeth like a bread knife and it was pressed against my neck.

I could feel blood dripping from where the blade made contact with my skin, it was so sharp that just a gentle press was enough to nick me.

The aggression and anger never left my face, I didn't know who the handsome stranger was but he was in my way, he was an obstacle that needed to go.

"Kill him!" the thin voice whispered.

He finally broke eye contact and looked me over, pausing slightly when he saw the blood stains on my clothes.

That was my opening, his momentary lapse in concentration, I waved up my left hand and knocked his knife-holding hand clean from my throat and then brought forth my claws and went straight for his eyes.

The man leaned backward agilely, stopping my claws from scooping out his eyes and he shoved me backward with his other hand, putting some distance between him and me.

I staggered before regaining my balance and then I snarled and came at him again.

I didn't know what was going on but the instant we started fighting, the scent in the environment started to change.

The scent of dried blood and forest soil was replaced with the smell of Moon Flowers and raw hormones, combining together to create a very potent and stimulating scent.

I closed the distance between the both of us, swiping wildly with my claws, trying to peel the skin off his bones and hurt him for daring to put a dagger on me.

The man was agile too, weaving left and right, avoiding my attacks but at the same time, not trying to attack again.

I didn't care, if he was not going to fight back, then he would die where he stood.

I leaped in the air and he abandoned his dagger and caught me, spun around and slammed my back into a nearby tree, and pressed closely onto me, pinning me to the tree.

The scent of raw hormones from up close was irresistible and I felt a sudden overwhelming urge to fuck this man and not kill him.

He held me firmly, as he leaned in close, his nose sniffling my neck as he brought his face close to mine then he growled, "Mate!"
