CHAPTER ONE - HEARTBREAK
Amelia's POV
"Congratulations, Mrs. Davidson. You are four months pregnant." Doctor Lilian informed me with a bright smile on her face.
"Pregnant? Doctor, are you sure? I can't have children. The fertility results said so." I countered the Doctor's news. I didn't want to get too excited over nothing.
Doctor Lilian flipped through the files on her desk and she glanced up at me. "I'm so sorry, Amelia. The results we gave you were meant for a different Amelia. Forgive the inefficiency of my staff." Doctor Lilian gave me a tight smile, and she handed a white envelope to me.
"So I'm pregnant, Doctor. I'm not infertile. I can have babies." I babbled all at once. My expression was one of absolute joy and I was having a hard time keeping my excitement to myself.
Doctor Lilian grinned, standing on her feet and opening her arms wide. I rushed to hug her while my heart thumped with adrenaline.
I swatted my hair backwards and rubbed it on my flat abdomen. Picking up my bag, which I'd stowed on the table, I carefully tucked the letter inside it.
"I have to get home right now. Jeremy will be so thrilled. He's been wanting to hear this news for ages. Thank you so much, Doctor." I rushed out of the doors smiling like a lunatic.
I got into my car and headed home. While I drove, I kept glancing at my bag like it would disappear. The letter, safely hidden in the confines of my bag, was the only proof to my husband.
The gatekeeper swung the gates open when I arrived. On a normal day, I'd chat with him and offer him some spare cash but not today.
I got out of the car, holding my bag tightly as I entered the mansion where I lived with my husband. I wasn't exaggerating. We lived in a freaking mansion.
It was all part of Jeremy's inheritance since his family was wealthy. The 'Calloways' were considered one of the most powerful and high-ranking families in New York. They had a chain of businesses scattered across the globe.
"Yes, Baby... Just like that."
I halted in my tracks at the sound of the familiar voice. I knew Jeremy stayed home to work today, but then who was the person with the voice? It sounded female. But no. Jeremy couldn't invite a female over while I was away.
With the reassurance that my husband would never cheat on me, I pushed the door to the room open and the scene in front of me came into view.
A red haired lay sprawled out on our matrimonial bed and Jeremy's was sucking her left nipple into his mouth. They were both naked.
My bag fell to the ground landing with a soft thud. Uhm... What did I say about my husband not being able to cheat on me again? I take that back.
"Baby, please. Amelia, it's not what it looks like. I... I can explain." Jeremy climbed out of the bed, his dick dangling as he made to touch my arm.
"It's not what it looks like? I just saw you sucking another woman's nipple, Jeremy. What's your explanation for that?" I asked with a broken voice.
"Baby, you are infertile. Look around you, Amelia. Luxury, wealth. If you cannot give me an heir to inherit my wealth, what good are you?" Jeremy shrugged, bumping my shoulders and leaving the room.
I couldn't believe my ears. He cheated on me because he thought I was infertile? Fuck Jeremy. I wiped the tears from my face and walked to my closet. Grabbing my suitcase, I shoved my clothes into the suitcase, panting heavily while u fought tears.
"You know, he loves you. He just wants a child and he knows you can never give him one." The red haired bitch on the bed spoke.
"Shut up! Don't you dare interfere. Just get out." I yelled, tears spilling out of my eyes at the impact of my yell. She flinched and hurriedly exited the room with her clothes in her hand.
"Argh!" I let out an ear-splitting scream, pulling at my hair and ignoring the pain it caused my scalp. More tears left my eyes and I dropped to the floor, sobbing like a baby.
I'd been married for two years. When the first year passed and no issue, Jeremy's family grew impatient. But he had stood up for me. Countless times when his mum had visited and called me names, Jeremy was my backbone. He had believed that one day we would have a child.
But then the fertility results came and I was declared infertile. That night had been the worst night of my life. But Jeremy stuck with me. He had whispered words of comfort to me and made sure I didn't starve myself.
"There's no use crying, Amelia. I had to do something. Believe me when I say this is the first time I've had sex with a woman that's not you since we got married." Jeremy said from the doorway where he stood.
I sniffed, building my courage and got back on my feet. Next thing I did was take my suitcase and I pushed past Jeremy. I needed to get out of this mansion.
When I started my car, Jeremy didn't try to stop me. I took one last glance at the mansion before driving away. I'd crash at my friend's home until I could get back on my feet, and maybe I would finally get the courage to go back to my immediate family.
The ones I had abandoned two years ago.
What would my Nana say? Probably 'I told you sorry'. Or she'd smack my head and ask me to make Japanese tea for her as a peace offering.
A sad smile found its way to my lips. I was heartbroken, yeah, but I still had a family that loved me.
"Don't worry, twinkle. Mummy's got this' I glanced down at my belly.
CHAPTER TWO - GETTING A JOB
Amelia's POV
I was right. A month ago when I'd booked a flight that took me to Japan, Nana had taken a glance at me and asked me to make tea for her. My mother cursed Jeremy in our native language after I'd told them what he did. And my sister had been excited at the thought of getting a niece or nephew to play with.
Every day, I still check my phone for updates about my ex-husband. After settling down here, I'd sent him divorce papers which he signed and our marriage was officially annulled.
"Why do you look so sombre, Amelia. That's bad for your composure. You know you have to get this job." Nana said in Japanese from where she sat on the love sofa.
I sighed, rubbing my belly. I had a job interview today and I didn't want to mess that up. Our family needed the extra money and besides, I had to start saving up for my baby.
But I couldn't shake this bad feeling off my body. I suddenly felt like ditching the interview and lying in my bed with a cup of coffee. Bad idea.
Once the clock on the wall ticked right and my alarm sounded, I got up and headed for the door. "Good luck, My Amelia." Nana's voice sounded behind me.
The stairs that led to our apartment building were always steep, so I took my time. The bustling streets came into view and I stopped a taxi.
"Bennett's Empire," I gave the driver my location.
"You're going for an interview, miss?" The driver asked me nicely in Japanese.
"Yes," I replied.
"That's amazing. My wife is also going to be interviewed today. I pray she gets the job. She's pregnant."
Warmth spread through my body at his words. He looked quite happy and content. "Well, that's a good thing. It seems they are taking just pregnant ladies?" I chuckled at the absurdity of my words.
"We are here, ma'am." He said and got down to open the door for me.
"Thank you," I paid him off and my eyes turned to the building in front of me. The word 'BENETT' was written upfront in big, block letters. I couldn't wait to get interviewed.
I walked into the gates, gazing around with awe. The interior was classy and posh, with floor-to-ceiling windows and sleek, extravagant furniture.
I took the elevator to the 5th floor and introduced myself to a woman who took me to the boss himself. When the doors slid open, the woman gestured for me to go in while she walked away.
I think I was so absorbed with the size and decoration of the office that I failed to recognise the voice and the person sitting behind that mahogany desk.
When I finally turned, our eyes met and I froze.
Something clicked in my head. Why didn't I think about this earlier? This was why the name of the company was so familiar. 'BENETT'.
Jeremy's family owned the BENETT EMPIRE. He was the freaking CEO. Damn. What the hell had I gotten my pregnant divorced self into?
I decided to play it cool by acting ignorant. Tearing my gaze away from him, I clear my throat and make for the seat.
"Good day, Mr. Calloway," I said, bowing my head slightly, Japanese style.
Jeremy still hadn't taken his eyes off me. But then he blinked and began going through my application file on his desk.
Please, give me the job. I need it. I prayed in my heart. When his eyes twitched, I thought I'd lost all hope.
"You're pregnant?" He gazed up at me, and confusion shone on his face.
Oh no. My application contained the results of the test I was required to take by the company. Now he was aware of my state. What now?
"Uhm... It's not showing yet, Sir." I stated foolishly and his eyes turned dark. When he rose from behind that huge table, my eyes roamed his body.
Still the same old Jeremy. The embodiment of hotness and masculinity. Those were one of the many qualities I'd fallen for, two years ago.
"Is it mine?" He was now standing right in front of me while I fidgeted with the hem of my flowing dress.
I could lie all I wanted. Who was I kidding? Jeremy could read me in and out like the back of his palm. Besides, my expression had already given me away.
"Fuck, Amelia. It's mine, right? The child is mine." He growled, like a male alpha whose mate was missing.
"That doesn't change anything." My voice was weak.
"What do you mean it doesn't? Did you know about this before sending the divorce papers?"
"With all due respect, sir. I am here for the job. And if you would rather discuss personal matters, I'll get up and leave."
"Amelia! You can't be serious."
"Try me,"
He seemed to rethink his stand because his menacing aura was suddenly replaced with calmness.
"Let's... Let's talk about this." Jeremy's gaze at me was nothing more than tenderness. But I'd blocked out all possible pleas he could use. It was too late. I didn't owe him any explanation. He had a life of his own and although I didn't, I was trying to make one.
"Are you going to interview me or what?" I snapped, annoyance clouding my voice.
Christ! This was the least person I'd expected to bump into today. The universe better be playing a fucking game because what the hell?
"You have the job, Amelia. You know I would've subjected you to an interview." He looked exhausted in my eyes. I had spent two years with this man to know when he was going through a hard time.
But that wasn't my problem anymore.
"Can I leave now?" I got up on my feet, clutching my bag to my chest. Jeremy waved me off with his hand, and when I slipped out of his office, I heaved a sigh of relief.
My phone buzzed in my bag. I swiped accept and brought it to my ear to answer the call. There was silence, and then a shriek, and a yell.
"Amelia! Sis, can you hear me?" My sister's panicked voice sounded. "Mum and I just returned from work, and we found the door open. There was a robbery, I think. And Nana is... She's not breathing."
I felt my breath leave me as my phone slipped out of my hand.
CHAPTER THREE - I DON'T NEED YOUR HELP
Amelia's POV
Our house had been robbed and all valuable assets stolen. The neighbours weren't home, or they'd have helped. A robbery had never taken place in the apartment building for five years, they had all said.
But at the moment, all I could think about was Nana. The fact that she wasn't breathing made my heart clench and unclench. She had to be fine. There was no two ways about it. Nana was a strong woman even at 85.
And most importantly, I wanted my baby to meet with her. So as I paced around the waiting room with Mum and Claudia my sister, I prayed silently. I'd give anything for my Nana to be safe and well.
"Are you the family of er... Mrs. Kishi?" A short woman, clad in a white coat walked toward us. Mum nodded in response.
"How is she faring? Is she going to be fine?" I asked the dwarf doctor.
"She is breathing normally for now. Apart from her legs which have been damaged due to the impact of the fall, she is perfectly fine."
Mum and Claudia held hands while I probed the doctor for more information about Nana.
"What does this mean for us?"
"It means she won't be able to walk again. A wheelchair will be used for movement and she'll need supervision. Like a nanny... Or I'd advise a nursing home."
Mum and I exchanged glances. I knew we were thinking the same thing. I wanted to speak up but Mum beat me to it.
"What do you mean by that, Doctor? Do you mean we can't take good care of her?"
The Doctor shifted uncomfortably in her flats. "What I meant to say is that the hospital will not discharge her until we are sure she'll have a twenty-four, seven monitoring. If your family cannot provide that little for her, she's better off in our nursing home." The Doctor walked away from us before Mum could give her a piece of her mind.
"How dare she? Did you hear her, Amelia? She's saying we are incapable of taking care of Nana." Mum said to me, with furrowed eyebrows.
Claudia and I glanced at each other and we held Mum, leading her to have a seat. Once mum and Claudia were seated, I ran a hand through my hair and exhaled.
Things were falling apart. Nana was bedridden. I didn't think Mum had the money for the bills. Our house wasn't safe. Heck, I couldn't let my family return to that dipshit. My head was spinning.
"I have some money," Mum began, drawing my attention to her. "I think we can settle Nana's bills with it. But I'm worried about the nursing home. I don't have that amount of money to get a nanny and we cannot let Nana stay at the nursing home."
"I can help. I'll ask 'Matt' to lend me some money," Claudia offered.
Matt was Claudia's boyfriend. He was well-to-do but had helped our family with almost all our needs, and the last thing I wanted was to burden him again.
"No. Claudia don't ask Matt for anything. I'll figure this out," I murmured, a crazy idea was brewing in my head. What if I requested six months' salary in advance from my boss? No company would take such a risk. No boss would even contemplate an idea so ridiculous.
But my boss was Jeremy.
"What will you do?" Claudia's worried voice sounded.
I shrugged, smiling sadly. The problem with this was that I felt like it was my duty to fend for my family. Technically, it was my duty because I was the first child. And Nana had sacrificed so much for me. The least I could do was to swallow my pride and ask Jeremy.
"Amelia, look." Claudia was staring behind me, her eyes wide as saucers. My heart thumped in my chest as I turned and locked eyes with my boss.
"Hello, Amelia."
Mum squinted her eyes at Jeremy. Then she turned to face me, a disappointed look on he face.
"Did you tell him to come here?" Mum half yelled, her glare directed at me was stony.
"No, I didn't. I don't know what he's doing here." I protested. Both Mum and Claudia didn't look like they believed a word I said and I hated it.
"I'm here to help you, Amelia. I've talked to my realtor and he has prepared a new home for you and your family. I'll foot Nana's bills and hire a nanny. Do you have any more requests?" Jeremy asked innocently.
Innocent didn't do. Innocent didn't cut the fact that he cheated on me and hurt me. What stupid game was the universe playing with me? First, Jeremy came back into my life. Now, I was placed in a position where I had to choose.
My family or my pride.
"I don't need your help, Jeremy. Pretending to care about me is ridiculous. And just so you know, money isn't going to cut it."
"I know I hurt you, Amelia. I know I don't deserve your forgiveness but this is for my child." Jeremy said, his gaze resting on my belly.
"Who says it's yours?" I snapped angrily.
"I know it's mine, Amelia. And don't fight me. Let me help you."
"I. Don't. Need. Your. Help."
