The howling of the wind from her high altitude caressed her ears. Her clothes and hair lightly fluttered around her.
She turned around, a foot askew and it all went silent.
Succumbing to darkness. This is it.
Her eyeslids fluttered open, and from then on her life was never the same; as she was now trapped in death embrace.
What happened? How did she get here? Well, let's me take you back. Back before the incident that made death an addictive companion.
*******
A sinister chuckle sounded as a little girl held onto someone, blood coating her palms as tears ran down her cheeks pale with fear.
"Poor, poor child." A voice tsked .
"Such a pity". It voice faked sympathy.
Silence rang out in the dark chilly room. "Till we'll meet again. I hope you would be a worthy opponent then".
The air felt still, suffocating to breath."You will tremble in fear once more when that day arrives", cold mocking laughter echoed around the trembling child.
"Tick, tick...". The voice sounded the ticking of the clock on the wall. "....Time is ticking little rabbit". Its sing sang, the voice calm but exuded bone-chilling terror.
"Remember me.....for i will ALWAYS be your worst nightmare".
Gasping selena jerked upright. Her hands were trembling, her throat felt parched and dry. She looked down. No, no blood coated her hands. Nothing. Her spine tingled as cold sweat ran down her back. The residue of fear gripped her making her jerk her head to her sides, frantically surveying her surroundings.
The white walls and familiar decor of her room assured her she was safe. She reached for a glass of water on her bed side table and gulped it down gingerly.
No, this can't be it. She has passed that step. Left it behind in the past like her therapy. She muddled.
A loud blaring sound shook her, making her spill the water she drank. Selena reached over to stop the noise.
"Hello Avery", she drawled, taking a deep breath to steady her voice. Of course it was her friend that changed her ring tone, then decided to test it out while she's sleeping.
A stern but cheerful voice sounded from the other line. " Good morning Selena~ I hope you aren't still sleeping ".
With a sigh, selena replied " I WAS, before you woke me up". She half lied. She was still stuck muddle up in her sleep before that obnoxious sound snapped her fully awake. It could still count.
The next thing she heard was the shouting from the other end. " Girl! what are you still doing in bed. It's almost noon". "So? Its not like there an interesting life waiting for me out there". its too early for this morning lecture, she groaned internally.
A sigh reached her ears " you truly are unbelievable. Okay. Please get dressed and meet me at tea time cafe ".
"Okay". Selena drawled, dragging a palm down her face.
"Sigh, the only things coordinated in your life is your stories".
That's kind of true, the only things coordinated in selena life were her stories. She's an author. Not your usual celebrity-like famous. Just the regular steady everyday author. But she took pride in the fact that the money She makes is enough to sustain her basic daily living. And to top it off, she has lovely readers that appreciates her works.
Selena quickly rushed to freshen up, and after having a light breakfast she left her apartment building.
Rushing through the sea of bodies on the busy street sidewalk she bumped into someone.
" Hey! watch where you are going" A man called out rudely. Was he serious. He literally was the one to bump into her when not paying attention, besides it wasn't an unusual occurrence on a busy side walk. He didn't even give her the opportunity to apologized for something that was majorly his fault. He just stared at her in disgust and stormed off.
Jerk.
"Seriously?!" She scoffed. Funnily enough, she's used to that gaze and rude treatment. She's always that person that never stood out among the crowd. often ignored when not mocked . She didn't want to get started on the awkward looks and silent treatment, She gets when trying to make 'friends' with people. Grow up people!
She never had much good company while growing up. It was clear as daylight. She would admit she wasn't good with the opposite gender, especially how she never appealed to them. so its not a surprise how she was made fun of. some even went as far as to make disgusted faces as if She was some disease.
News flash, she didn't care. Who wants those immature peanut size brains to approach her in the first place, she didn't like any of them, or want them to like her either. But no matter how hard she tried to ignore it, she could still see the mockery in their eyes and the whispers and laughs directed at her. Some people are just made to make other people lives miserable. Though selena didn't see herself as a goddess, she didn't think she was ugly either. But that view gets tampered with when being called ugly all the time. She knew she was on the average scale to be honest. And yeah she has a nice body, but didn't show it much, especially then in school. Don't give the jealous bitches another reason to hate her, she always thought. But it didn't matter.
Maybe they just really hated her, you know, the odd one out. She huffed before adjusting her non-medically recommended glasses.
It was another thing she wore to wade off bullies back then but kind of stuck with her later on.
After about half an hour, she arrived at her favourite cafe. Although the name was 'tea time café' it also serve coffee and other nice drinks too. And they have great snacks and desserts. Top it of with a nice view of the street. Selena also knows how much she can't stand her day without coffee with lots of cream.
The little bell stationed at the door jingled As she stepped into the cafe. Looking around the small but comfortable cafe; the smell of brewed coffee in the air, she quickly spotted Avery, who sat at a corner, by the celling to floor window stamped with the cafe logo, Looking outside at the people walking by in the busy street. With a smile she slowly made her way towards her friend.
Avery turned to face selena, when she heard her footsteps approach and stop before her.
...........
Soon selena was sitting and chatting with her friend. Starring at avery, she got to admit, her friend was always a. beauty; With golden brown hair and emeralds green eyes, almost perfect features, she could have even been a model. Avery sported a dark yellow coat over her outfit, Which suited her well.
Selena pulled her own coat closer to her body. They just passed the winter season, but the air was still unusually chilly; making lots of people still sport their sweaters and coats. "So spill, what's the reason you invited me for lunch?" Selena questioned looking straight at avery across the table.
She seemed a little too happy. As she asked, a wide smile bloomed on her face.
" I got great news" Avery announced, adjusting in her seat. " I found a company offering to pay big money for your stories ". She continued excitedly.
Selena was a little stunned. Her? Seriously? That was one of the best news she has heard so far.
"So....how's it going? are you hearing from them?". Selena was eager to learn more of this new opportunity.
It has been a few days since Selena last saw her friend at the cafe. Avery informed selena that she was still speaking with the people on the formalities-and gave selena their contact just in case they couldn't reach her. Avery was a dear friend she made in her writing journey, she was her translator, proof reader and everything it took to make her best works. And now she's trying to get a contract for her. She has to do something to show Avery just how much she appreciate what she has done so far for her.
It was mid-day and she decided to go out of her apartment to roam around; finding that taking a walk and looking at her surrounding helps her come up with new ideas to write. With her mind made up, selena wore casual clothes, and took her coat before leaving her apartment. As she stepped out of the building, the cool wind blew against her exposed skin, she was glad she took her coat with her. Selena spent most of the afternoon wondering around. She tried some of her favourite street food on the way, and at the end, she settled for the city park close by. While strolling through the park; which she found more peaceful as the sun went down basking the trees and people with it fading light. selena thought about what to write in her story update that evening. She spent some time roaming about, before she settled for one of the park benches. After spending some time thinking, selena noticed it was getting dark. She stood up and decided to get herself a drink from her favorite cafe, before heading home. It has quite become a routine for her to get coffee in the morning and chocolate drink in the evening. She visited the cafe, ordered her drink and left feeling happy about now having some ideas on what to write in her upcoming chapters. On getting home, she took some left overs from the fridge, heat them up and had a light dinner; soon retired for an early nap after having a bath and wearing her night gown. she set her alarm to wake her up later in the night, to update some chapters. A few hours later, her alarm went off, and she woke up with her mind and body feeling refreshed. Taking her laptop at her bed side table she proceeded to write the current story, she's updating called, 'my elementals'. She promised her readers a mass release, so it took her quite a while to finish the chapters. Selena then read the comments of her previous updated chapters. She had to admit that she was quite happy with her progress so far, in her story. She had a long list of reviews from people about her story and also so many likes, comment and gifts. She felt appreciated. When she was done reading the new reviews and comments, she closed her laptop and placed it back on her bed side table. Selena stretched before coming down from the bed and took slow relaxed steps towards her bed room window, she opened the window and looked down to see the colourful light from the vechiles below and some still opened shops. She always hoped to find herself surrounded by beautiful lights from so many buildings, offices and cars below. But for now she's content with what she has. While Selena was admiring the view, she was interrupted by the abrupt ringing of her phone. She took her phone out of her robe pocket to see an unknown number on her screen. While being hesitant, she decided to pick it up. "Hello?" Selena said cautiously after picking up the phone. And from the other line the person asked, "Hello, am I speaking to miss Selena ". "Yes, this is Selena, who are you and how may I help you?" she was now cautious as she doesn't recognize this voice and decided to tread carefully, but still talk nicely, keeping the possibility that it might be the company that wants to sign her. "I'm miss Lynn from the police investigation department, and I would like to ask, who are you to miss Avery" the woman from the other line asked. 'POLICE' Selena was shocked and worried now. What happened to her friend, is she in trouble, is she missing. Were those people from the company shady, It's a possibility since she haven't heard from her in days. She should have check up with her earlier. With worry clouding her eyes and her voice tight she responded, "I'm her close friend, is anything the matter officer" Selena held her breath now, biting down on her lips with her heart thundering in her ears and rib cage, in anticipation of the next words from the other woman. Every second an eternity, her mind running through possible scenarios. But she would never have guessed the woman next words. ".......I'm sorry for your loss. We are informing you about the death of miss Avery. Please if you can come down to the station tomorrow. That would be helpful..." And with those words, Selena heart ceased for a second and her world came crashing down. Her ears were ringing and she couldn't listen to what more the investigator had to say. Her phone fell out of her hands and she crumbled to the floor, it felt like it all happened so slowly. Her tears came falling one by one before it fully registered to her. She held her chest and cried bitterly. Every breath she took more antagonizing and more painful than the last. No this couldn't be true. She was hearing it wrong. Avery is fine. Her head was in chaos and her heart a mess. Everything felt so painful and then the whole world turned silent for her, only the distant sounds and calling of her name from her phone speaker was heard from somewhere far aware in her consciousness. The blaring of her ringtone pierce through the haze of her frantic thoughts. she reluctantly picked up the call praying to hear it was the woman calling again to inform her they were wrong, before she broke apart. But she guessed luck was not on her side, for as she answered the call only to hear more heart wrenching news about the cancellation of her preparing contract . And without given her a second to think or reply the call was cut off. Maybe if those people knew what happened to her, they won't have given her this kind of news at this moment. Everything came rushing back to her; her ears thundering, with the combination of these bad news together. In anger and pain, she threw her phone, wishing for it to break into a million pieces, just like her heart. She cried and cried for maybe hours, until she couldn't remember what happened next. ......... The next morning, Selena woke up with a mind wrenching headache. It must have been from all the crying she did last night. Her throat felt parched and dry and her heart felt so heavy and numb. To put it short, she felt absolutely terrible. And that on it own was an understatement. But she knew she had to get to the bottom of this case. Although she felt heavy and numb, and wished for everything to end, she managed to reluctantly dragged herself up, for her morning routine. In the middle of it, she got a call from the same unknown number, she wasted no time to pick it up. . . . . . . . . Closing the door and walking down the corridor and stairs, she soon exited the building. Now to her next destination...... The earlier call she had was to inform her about a change of plan, that she should first go to Avery's place. She ran to the bus station to catch up with the next bus. Her white winter hat, holding the top of her hair, but the wind did no mercy to the lower parts. She had her red scarf around her neck with thicken woolen sweater and trousers , she ran with her boots eating up the length of the sidewalk. Holding her coat tight to her body. she felt warm. The weather was getting colder and colder everyday, and it seems the first snowfall, would fall soon. she was quite sensitive to the cold, even though she lived in city z almost her whole life. She stood at the bus stop, the bus arrived and she boarded it. . . . . Hello, It's author here. I hope you like this chapter, please stick with me for more, the story will get better soon. Don't forget to add this book to your library, comment and gift. They help a lot. Thanks. See you in the next chapter..
••• "Hello? I'm looking for detective Lynn" that was the first thing she said after entering her late friend house. Only she knew how many emotions she had to fight while standing in front of the house, before taking up the courage to go in. From what she has seen, it seems like there was still some investigation going on in the house, as she still found some people checking the place, looking for more clues or sign of whatever case they were leading on. Selena was lead to where detective Lynn was going through a room and the electronic devices, with the assistance from other investigators.
As detective Lynn heard the approaching foot steps, she lifted her head from the computer screen and saw Selena walking towards her. They greeted theirselves and the detective, started to fill Selena in on their finding's, as they go along. She showed selena a couple of pictures, mainly the injury pictures. "We are not too sure of what to call it. No traces of struggle was found for it to be murder and we have no information after accessing her messages, chat and calls, she had undergo, before her death". She stated " The evidence points to suicide, because of the stab; from which we found a knife, but the hole seems more wide and deeper than what a normal knife could do. We also found no traces of poison but found her hand prints on the knife. According to more investigation, it was seen she has no drug abuse records or even any empty medicine containers at home. Also from the report, there was no sign of Avery taking a pill before then. "We wanted to do deeper tests..." The detective said as she drop the pics on a table near by as Selena has seen enough. She folded her arms across her chest as she faced Selena " ...but her parents didn't want their daughter to go through it, and they now have collected the body for the burial". She then paused and said " I assume you don't know this, as it was recently the body was out of our hands". The woman then pat Selena on the shoulder and sighed " I know it must be hard on you, but I would like to ask a few questions?" Selena nodded as a go ahead. "Did you notice any form of depression.... or any matter concerning her spilling about anything having to do with suicide". "No, she was okay a few days ago when we met. She was even happy as we were expecting a contract" she added " we talked a little to catch up and said a few things about future update plans on the story, I'm working on. As I know, you would know by now. "But apart from that everything was fine". Selena was hoping this could help. She couldn't see why her friend would, commit suicide. As a matter of fact she didn't believe that. But she decided not to probe. She was snapped out of her thoughts, when she heard the detective said " if that's the case. I would like if you give a written statement about what you said, and that would be all. We would keep you updated, if there's anything " and that marked the end of their conversation as Selena left the house. She stopped by the station on her way home, for her statement. She went back home, feeling dead and lifeless and flopped on her bed as she bid this unfair world good night. . . . . . . [THE NEXT DAY]. Selena still felt as terrible as before. Her close friends funeral will be at noon. Earlier when she woke up, she was painfully reminded of the time, when her friend gave her an early morning lecture, she now compared it with the irony of how that felt now. She was sure avery would be happy to see her wake up early. She laughed bitterly which was quickly converted to a sob. Oh she wished she could hear her nag one more time. After mopping around feeling broken, she got ready when it was almost noon. She didn't have an update plan, but decided to update according to her mood about the female less and male lead fainting. She thought about making them suddenly die as they fainted. But she knew her readers will be confused and probably hate her for it, because she was still at an early stage of the story. So it would make no sense. And would be unprofessional. She laughed at that. It was a hallow lifeless laugh, void of happiness. ••• Selena stayed through to the part where they dropped the flowers at her friend's grave. She saw the way her friend's mom cried a lot through out the ceremony. Herself did cry a lot, but it was a silent one. She wore a veiled covered hat, hoping not to be seen, while her tears ran down her face. When it was her turn to drop her flower. She walked up to her friend grave. She communicated with her through her mind, even if she knew her friend can't hear her. She would not be able to speak to her again like before. After placing the flower she kissed on her coffin, she walked back to where she stood and watched as they lowered the casket. now away from her sight, never to see her friend again. But to keep the memories together, forever in her heart. Losing someone has never been easy. How the world lost it glow and colour in front of one eyes. How a hallow deep hole, dull, aching painfully imprinted on ones heart. And how much you want to crawl out of that desperation. Maybe convincing yourself, it was all just a dream. But it felt more like a night mare. When you want to cry so hard, you can't feel air in your lungs, and its so painful to breath. But deep down you know, no matter where or who you look out to, and how hard you pray. You won't wake up, because it was never a dream. But a living......NIGHTMARE. So to escape that pain, you have to find the light once again. To bring colour to your life, and you have to keep moving on, because they aren't coming back. ••• Selena silently stood in front of a tall building, the blaring of horns and hustle bustle of the street behind her. It has been a while since she came here-she thought as she passed through the revolving glass door.Selena was Still dressed in her black plain dress, but she ditched the hat. At least the weather did them mercy today. She wonders why the weather was unpredictable this period. But she put that aside as the receptionist asked her a question. "Good day ma'am, how may I help you?" the woman behind the desk said with their usual polite formal smile. " Yes, um... I would like the access to room 504". selena had on a strained smile. The receptionist still pulling her formal smile requested, "Give me a minute" . she said opening their patient visitor list. "Name please?" she asked looking through the register. "Selena Morris" she answered already familiar with the process. Soon she was confirmed and given an access card. She took the elevator to one of the highest units. Weaving through the hallways and corridors, until she stood in front of a room, with the plate number at the door labelled 504. Bracing herself, she opened the door and stepped inside. she heaved a sigh as the door clicked shit behind her. Finally , she's back here again. From where she stood at the door, she could see the hospital bed across from her by the window side, letting the light illuminate the person on it. This building was a care center partnership with a formidable hospital in city Z. She took slow steps towards the bed across her. Standing by the bed side she heard the steady beeping of the machine besides the bed, and the tubes connected to the IV bag also. Her sight followed it up to the hand it was inserted him. Slowly she trailed her gaze upwards, to the steady rise and fall of the chest, her gazed paused on the oxygen mask on the patients lower face. Selena trailed her gaze till she reached eyes of the patients, which was closed. She took an unsteady step closer and her lips slowly parted, barely above a whisper, a tear drop slipped from her eye, "Father".
