Cursed by My Best Friend

Author: : Tangye Wanzi
Genre: Horror
Savannah stood at my desk, her smile unsettlingly bright, holding a tiny antique bottle. "For you, Chloe," she purred, her voice dripping with fake sweetness, "a special family recipe for good fortune." But a chill ran down my spine the moment I saw it. The bottle. The smell. The lie. It all came flooding back with agonizing clarity. I remembered the grotesque rash, worse than any psoriasis, erupting across my skin. It was red, raw, and it smelled like rotting meat, coarse black hair sprouting from inflamed patches. Doctors were confused, their creams useless. My own reflection became a monster. Ethan, my boyfriend and boss, looked at me with disgust before abandoning me for good. I was fired from the job I loved, my career turning to ash. I died alone in my apartment, ostracized and broken, the foul reek of my own decaying flesh my final breath. Then I remembered the truth I learned after death: It wasn't a disease. It was a vicious Hoodoo curse, a 'crossing' fed by that very essential oil. A "gift" from my best friend, Savannah. She wanted my job, my beauty, my entire life. And she took it all. But now, I was back. My skin was clear, my body whole. I had a second chance. And this time, she wouldn't win.

Introduction

Savannah stood at my desk, her smile unsettlingly bright, holding a tiny antique bottle.

"For you, Chloe," she purred, her voice dripping with fake sweetness, "a special family recipe for good fortune."

But a chill ran down my spine the moment I saw it.

The bottle. The smell.

Chapter 1

Savannah stood in front of my desk, her smile too wide, too bright.

In her hands, she held a small, antique apothecary bottle. Dark oil sloshed inside.

"For you, Chloe," she said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "It's a special family recipe. For good fortune."

My breath caught in my throat.

The bottle. The smell. The lie.

It all came rushing back.

A memory, so real it felt like it was happening again. A grotesque rash, like psoriasis but worse, erupting across my skin. It was red, raw, and it smelled like rotting meat. Then came the hair, coarse and black, sprouting from the inflamed patches.

I remembered the doctors, their confused faces, their useless creams.

I remembered my reflection in the mirror, a monster staring back.

I remembered Ethan, my boyfriend, my boss, looking at me with disgust before he left for good.

I remembered being fired from the job I loved, my career turning to ash.

I remembered dying alone in my apartment, ostracized and broken, the foul smell of my own body my last sensation.

And I remembered the truth I learned after death. It wasn't a disease. It was a curse. A Hoodoo crossing, fed by a cursed essential oil.

A gift from my best friend, Savannah.

She wanted my job, my looks, my life. And she took them.

Now, I was back.

I looked down at my hands. Smooth, clear skin. No rash. No hair. No smell.

I was alive. I was whole.

I had a second chance.

And I wasn't going to waste it.

Chapter 2

"Chloe? Are you okay?" Savannah' s voice pulled me back to the trendy, open-plan office.

She pushed the bottle closer to me. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

I had. My own.

I recoiled from the bottle, a real, physical flinch.

Savannah' s smile tightened. She saw my reaction.

"What's wrong? Don't you like it?" she asked, her voice loud enough for our nearby coworkers to hear. "I thought you'd appreciate it. It's from my family, back home in Louisiana."

She was trying to guilt-trip me, to make me look ungrateful in front of everyone.

It was a classic Savannah move.

But this time, I was ready.

I let my eyes fill with fake tears, my voice trembling just enough.

"Oh, Savannah," I began, my voice soft but carrying. "Of course, it's... thoughtful."

I stood up and took a step back, drawing more attention.

"It's just, after everything I've done for you, I never expect anything in return."

Heads started to turn from their computer screens.

"When you couldn't make rent three months ago, I didn't hesitate to cover it, did I?"

Savannah' s face paled. "Chloe, this isn't the place..."

"And when your car broke down and you needed a thousand dollars for the repair, I gave it to you, no questions asked. I just wanted to help."

A low murmur started to spread through the office. Our colleagues knew I came from a comfortable family, and they knew Savannah was always struggling. They had seen me help her countless times.

"I even introduced you to Ethan," I said, letting that hang in the air. "I just want you to be happy. You don't need to give me gifts. Your friendship is enough."

I made myself look wounded, betrayed.

The office sentiment shifted, fast. I could see the judgment in their eyes, all of it aimed at Savannah. She looked greedy, manipulative, and deeply ungrateful.

She was cornered.
