CHAPTER ONE
It was late in the night, the cold rain pounded mercilessly against the cold skin of Aurora Gibson, her wild hair was splattered on a pale looking face. Her small frame looked even more fragile than usual.
She was completely drenched to the skin but her heart was too numb to realize it, neither did she realize the weird stares she earned as she roamed the street in no preferred direction
The few hours she had spent in the doctor's office replayed in her mind continuously, his softly spoken but fatal statement lingered in her head.
Sam was only six!
He hasn't even gotten to learn anything about life!
Aurora's feet slowed to a stop and she realized she had somehow managed to find her way home if the large cold building in front of her could be described as such.
She lifted her chin to stare at the stormy clouds, perhaps they provided more comfort than what was waiting for her behind the beautiful gates.
The moment she stepped into the large living room, her eyes instinctively shifted up the stairs.
Her husband's bedroom.
She wondered if George Peterson was home.
Faint moans which echoed the living room answered her questions.
She didn't realize when her feet slowly led her up the stairs, the pleasurable moans which were coming from her husband's door got even louder.
"Arrgh! I love you so much! Fvck me yes! Show me how much you love me!" The woman's breathless voice sounded.
It wasn't the first time it was happening, but the pain Aurora received in her heart each time hurt a millionth times than the last.
Where had she gone wrong? Why was everyone hellbent on hurting her? Would they only stop when she is dead?
"Yes! fvck me on your matrimonial bed! Yes! Yes!"
She tried to block away from the sounds, she had told herself that she wouldn't shed another tear over her husband's cheating ways, which he hadn't bothered to make a secret of.
The only person who meant the entire world to her was fighting for his life in the hospital.
Her heart squeezed tightly as she remembered Sammie as she loved to call him, his small body had been covered in so many tubes. He wouldn't survive another year, not unless his surgery is performed. But from where was she supposed to get a million dollars?
Her job at the saloon would never raise such an amount, not even in a million years to come!
Her body shivered uncontrollably, and for the first time, she realized how drenched she was, her wet clothes were dripping all over the carpeted floor.
She started to leave when the door behind her clicked open.
"Aurora when did you get here? Were you listening to us this whole time? you should have known not to return early, not when I'm having a good time with your husband. " A sultry voice rang out.
A slow flame spread across Aurora's heart, she didn't want to turn around to find the owner of the voice.
Cassandra Gates.
Her former best friend.
Whatever was left of her grieving heart hardened to stone.
"What is this behavior? You can't look at me even now? I already explained to you so many times, it isn't my fault that your husband fell in love with me, I didn't want to hurt you this way but what could I do? I still consider you my best friend, but apparently, you don't want to even look at me"
The mockery Cassandra hadn't bothered to hide made the flame in Aurora's heart burned even hotter, she turned around to face Cassandra who was dressed in a pale red flimsy material that left little to the imagination, a cold smile spread across her dry lips.
"Exactly how low can you stoop? "
At that moment, George appeared through the door, there wasn't a hint of remorse in his face as he regarded Aurora's drenched form, the disgust apparent on his face.
"I think you both deserve each other, I've never seen a more shameless deserving couple." The smile on Aurora's face was icy, she could not stay in the presence of these disgusting couples for seconds longer, she started to leave, but once again Cassandra's voice stopped her.
"Then why won't you divorce him Aurora, don't you have the slightest bit of self respect? Neither his heart nor his body will ever belong to you! Just what do you need from us? " The desperation Cassandra couldn't hide strained in her voice.
"Nothing, I want nothing from you both!" Aurora lashed out, her gaze lingering from her husband's seething ones to that of his mistress.
"You can have each other! The only thing you can't get is his ring".She made a show of her fingers as she spoke.
" And the baby you are carrying will never get a legitimate name!"
A startled gasp escaped Cassandra's mouth, George immediately stood in front of her as though to protect her in case Aurora decided to launch an attack.
"H..how did you know that?"
Aurora ignored the question, a gasp of sharp pain tore from her mouth when her hand was suddenly tugged harshly.
"You will sign the divorce papers! Or I'll make your life as well as that little brat's hell! "George seethed, his eyes which Aurora had always used to find so intriguing was narrowed into angry slits. The part of her heart that had always used to throb at the sight of him had died long ago.
" Oh, I forgot, the brat is already halfway dead, but I can still deal with you all right!"He continued, a smile spread across his face.
All Aurora could feel now was anger and pure hatred for the man in front of her.
He was making jest of her sick brother!
How could he?!
"Let go! You're disgusting! You'll never be happy! " She spat, when he suddenly shoved away her roughly in anger, her feet slipped way to the ground and before she could get up, a hard kick was delivered to her stomach.
Cassandra watched with a pleasant smile, the arrogant b!tch would finally get a good beating.
Aurora's eyes burned with tears when she was continually being kicked like a rag doll, her whole body hurt badly.
It wasn't the first time he had hit her, but this was worse than anything she had ever received.
"Darling, just leave this slut alone, what if she dies? I don't want you to get into problems, we still have a family to take care of, alright?" Cassandra attached her hand to George's, it wasn't because she felt pity towards Aurora, but she felt the girl might die. But then, wouldn't it be good? If the b!tch is dead, divorce papers would not be needed.
A sigh escaped her mouth, it was too risky just like this, George could get into big trouble.
"Come on, stop it now, I still need you to massage my back, okay?"
The beatings came to an end, all Aurora could manage was shallow pants, her blurry eyes saw George and Cassandra retreating to his bedroom, their laughter were mocking needles that prickled her heart.
She could almost see that George, not this monster, she could almost see the man who she had once loved with everything, whose every smile she craved.
Almost...
And just immediately the door went closed, that George disappeared along with the monster he's now become.
Where did she ever go wrong? Was there something she was supposed to do but failed to?
What was the mistake she had made by marrying the love of her life?
She always had thought nothing could separate their strong bond. How did their love not withstand even the slightest storm?
Curling herself into a tight ball, she continued weeping agonizingly, but the pain in her body was nothing compared to the torment in her heart.
She could only ask herself thoughts.
How could she lose everything? Even the only person she has left was slowly slipping through her fingers.
What had she done so wrong that even the heavens hated her this much?

CHAPTER TWO

Aurora couldn't close her eyes in sleep, not even after applying ointment to her injuries, those were mere physical wounds, the ones her heart sustained refused to be soothed.
Where was she going to get a million dollars for Sammie's surgery? She couldn't bring herself to request George for help, even if she chewed the little pride she had to ask him, she knew for certain he would never help her, both he and his mistress would only make a scorn of her helplessness.
She toyed with the wedding band around her finger, the ghost of a smile formed across her lips.
How foolish had she been!
There years ago, George had meant everything to her, her whole world had been centered around him, and she foolishly thought she also meant something to him.
The happiest day in her entire life had been when he had slipped the symbol of their love around her fingers, vowing to love and cherish her for eternity, she had made the promise never to take it off, they would overcome the good and bad times together. The happiness had been so real but it all seemed a lifetime ago now that she tried to recall it.
She had been that naive nineteen-year-old girl who had believed in fairy tales, prince charming, and happily ever afters.
Her parents and George's had been great friends, and she had been that girl who had always admired him, he was good-looking and charming, her heart always fluttered when he was around, when he had proposed to her, her joy couldn't have been fuller.
Her wedding day had been surreal, she was finally Mrs. Peterson! She was going to spend the rest of her life with George!
The tragedy had struck only in the space of a few hours.
A few moments ago she was the happiest bride on the planet and in the next, they had received the terrible blow.
Her parents and George's never made it back to their homes. They were involved in a fatal crash, there had been no survivors, except three-year-old Sammie who had been unconscious. She had been so stuck in grief that for the next few days after the accident, she refused to cry, she wouldn't believe that her loving parents who had been smiling and congratulating her were gone. After a few days was when the tears came, the pain had been agonizing, she leaned towards George, so they would share their grief together, the result she got had been shocking.
He had blamed her for the tragedy, calling her bad luck and how his parents would have been alive only if he hadn't married her. She had wept bitterly that night, she also couldn't fault George, he had said those awful words in hurt, he surely didn't mean them. When he had continued to distance himself from her, she had thought he still needed more time to mourn the loss of his parents, people deal with hurt differently and with time he would finally look at her.
She had no one in that period except Cassandra, her best friend, and only support, she was always there whenever she needed someone to talk to, she was Aurora's listening ear whenever she cried bitterly about how cold George still was towards her even six months after the funeral. Aurora might have committed suicide if not for the support she received from Cassandra in those Crucial times and also Sammie whose very life depended on her, he was only three.
A year after, both she and George were still like strangers living in the same house, she resumed her work in the parlor as a beautician, that was her only means of taking care of herself and Sammie since George prefers to spend all day with his bottles of alcohol.
Then that fateful day, every hope she held in her heart concerning her relationship with George was sent crashing, not even the pieces of it could be merged.
She had forgotten some of her instruments at home as she left in a hurry, she also hadn't expected George to be home that day since he loved spending all his time at the local bar just down the street.
She heard the strange noises, thinking George was in some kind of danger, she had run without thinking, shoving the door of his bedroom open, only to get the shock of her life.
George and Cassandra were in George's room, both completely naked on the bed and had been too immersed in their love making to realize her presence.
The shock had left her completely still, a loud cry from the heart-shattering pain that threatened to rip her in two had sent the couple apart.
She had only been able to utter a word out of her cold dry lips and the raw torment that spread across her heart like hot burning acid.
"Why?"
A question directed at the two people who had cheated her the most.
Her best friend whom she had thought would be her rock in crises, and her husband who had taken those vows with her.
To love...
To cherish...
Forever...
The fairy tale world was crashing before her eyes and there was nothing she could have done to stop it, and with it was the love.
Their affairs didn't end, it only gave them more boldness since they no longer had the fear about her finding out.
Aurora straightened to turn off the TV, her eyes were dry, maybe it was because there was no tear left to shed, or her heart was so accustomed to the pain that it has grown numb.
She had thought the TV would provide distraction since she couldn't sleep, the newscaster was talking about some powerful business tycoon who has recovered from an accident after many months and how much of a miracle it was.
Her mind drifted to Sammie, she wished she would also get that sort of a miracle, even if she lost everything, she couldn't lose her little brother to the chill hands of death. She had already lost everything, It would be too much if she lost the one person who held the meaning of life to her. She knew that she wouldn't be able to survive if he also left her.
It would kill her.
CHAPTER THREE
*
*
A few days later, Aurora walked into the apartment, she just returned from the hospital and her mood was slightly uplifted as she recalled Sammie's innocent smile while he showed her the pictures he had colored.
She heard loud voices coming from the living room and a quiet sigh escaped her mouth, the voices she recognized to be George's, Cassandra, and also of Jerome as they chatted and laughed endlessly.
She had no other option but to see them before she would be able to walk upstairs to her room.
The first thing her eyes caught on was the bottles of alcohol and half-burnt cigarettes littering across the whole living room floor.
They ignored her sudden presence, in the same way, she pretended they were invisible as she started the walk to her room, she didn't get halfway when George's voice rang out.
"Why are you in such a hurry, we've got some very great news!"
The full excitement in his voice told Aurora that the news must be great indeed, but she had no intention of listening to whatever any of them had to say.
She started to leave when Cassandra straightened from her spot on George's thighs and hurried to stand in front of her, blocking her path.
"I think you might want to listen to this, considering you have a part to play in this big proposal we got, George told me your brother, what's that his name? ....Never mind that you are searching for how to raise the money for his operation right? "
Aurora rose a brow wondering where the discussion was heading to, she had ever told George anything regarding Sammie's illness, but he somehow had his way of figuring out everything, and if she were to guess, she would say without a doubt that it had everything to do with Jerome, Cassandra's brother, who is a doctor in the same hospital Sammie was currently in.
"Well, we found a way to raise the money for you!"
Aurora's eyes widened a fraction, she couldn't manage to hide the instant surprise, Cassandra had to be either joking or was mocking her as usual. Aurora knew for a fact that the woman hated her bitterly, not to mention about raising money, she knew Cassandra would prefer it if she was six feet below!
"You don't believe me? I don't think you would, my brother managed to find the perfect solution to all of your needs, but there's something you need to do first. " Cassandra smirked, seeing the way Aurora's eyes quickly narrowed, she rushed to add.
"It's nothing difficult, I'm sure you can carry it out with ease "
Jerome and George joined them the next moment.
"What do you want?" Aurora spoke, her gaze shifting to the three persons who surrounded her, she hated that she had a keen interest to listen to whatever Cassandra was saying, but if this was truly an opportunity she had to preserve Sammie's life, there was nothing she wouldn't do.
"It's as simple as this, we need the service of your womb and are willing to pay you the money needed for your brother's operation" Jerome wore a neutral expression as he spoke.
Aurora felt as though a heavy hammer had been slammed against her heart, she staggered a step backward wondering if she had heard right.
"What the hell are you speaking about! " She hissed taking another step backward, the way they had suggested it meant that to them, she was seen as nothing more than a commodity.
"Don't shout! We are only trying to help you, but as always, you are an ungrateful slut!" George yelled, his alcohol breath fanning her face.
"I'm unwilling! Don't help me, I never requested it from you, did I? " Aurora yelled right back, her chest heaving heavily as tears of anger and frustration sprang forth in her eyes.
" Don't give us that look, This is a great opportunity for you! I would have easily done it, but you see......my womb is already occupied." Cassandra patted her slightly protruding stomach as she and George shared a laugh.
"You are being so unreasonable! Instead of giving such money to outsiders, Jerome told me about it, and I figured I will do you this favor, after all, we were once best friends, it's alright for us to help each other, is it not? " Cassandra spoke again, this time in an overly sweet tone and Aurora had the urge to smack her in the face, she somehow managed to refrain herself from it, knowing it would only end badly for her.
"The man is super rich! He's willing to pay such a huge amount of money just to rent your womb, I thought that brats life was important to you, but it turns out I'm wrong, he is going to die and it will be because of his selfish whore of a sister who refused to save his own life! " George spat, his eyes were filled with hate and so much disgust.
An uncontrollable shiver swept Cassandra, how could they suggest her to have another man's child?
Her stomach rolled tightly as she fought the urge to puke.
Her very own husband at that?
How dare he even suggest such! He was going too far!
But if this was true, then she could really save Sammie's life, this could just be the miracle she had been praying for?
She shook her head, she couldn't think deeply about anything right now, her mind was in a state of complete mess, she wanted some time alone to herself, maybe then she would be able to think.
"What's your decision, huh? Don't tell me that you are objecting because you still have some hope in us? " George laughed aloud scornfully as he spoke.
"In three years, I've never looked in your pathetic direction, what would make you think I will start now? I'm not giving you a choice, you have to do it if you want to remain in this house!"
It was Aurora's turn to laugh, her lips were stretched into the emptiest of smiles which mirrored the numb ache in her heart.
If there was anything she felt for George, then it was disgust and hate for the man she had once loved with everything.
"You can't send me out of this house! It belongs to me! I'll stay here for as long as I want....!" She didn't get to complete her statement when her hair was tugged harshly, setting her scalp on fire.
Cassandra wore a mocked horrified look while Jerome looked uncomfortable, meeting anywhere but her gaze.
The house had belonged to her maternal grandparents, her own parents had gifted this house to both she and George upon their marriage, the only mistake they had made had been to involve George's name in the documents, the property was hers even more than it belonged to him.
"Let go of me! " The scream left Aurora's mouth as she met George's cruel smile, he was enjoying seeing her in pain.
He had to make Aurora agree at any cost, there was much at stake, the company which he owned was at the very edge of bankruptcy, he had already accumulated quite an amount of debts. Whoever this savior was had agreed to pay the sum of five whole million dollars! just to find a surrogate mother to give birth to his heir! It would go a long way to pay off all his debt, including those accumulated from gambling. Aurora didn't need to know about the full amount, a million should be enough for her, he expected her to jump at the opportunity to finally be able to save that little bastard of hers, but she was proving tough to deal with, fueling his hatred and anger to no ends.
The moment Aurora managed to tug herself free, her eyes were prickling with tears as she coughed uncontrollably.
She ran upstairs without looking back, she couldn't be in the company of these monsters, not even for a second longer.
She slammed her door shut but not before catching George's and Cassandra's last words.
"You should try to treat her more nicely, maybe she will be keen to agree to the divorce so we can both finally get married since you already can't kick her out of the house"
"She deserves it! Such an ungrateful bitch! "
She blocked her ears to their words, life was playing such a cruel joke with her, it was giving her an opportunity so that Sammie's rare heart disease could be cured, but what was the price of saving her brother's life?
The doctors had said he might outlive another year without the operation, but that was it.
Helpless sobs of frustration made her whole body tremble, she cried until her eyes became dry once again, there were no more tears left to be shared.
Of what use was it anyway?
It would never provide the help she needed.
They were all right about one thing though, this was a great opportunity that she had no choice but to accept, she was going to do wherever it took so long that Sammie would become healthy once again.
Even if it meant selling her womb.
