THE SWEET CHIRPING of birds could be heard. It sounded like an eagle soaring in the sky, with its majestic wings spread wide. As you looked up, you could see four of them, flying high above the scorching sun of Los Angeles.
"Hahaha!!" The voice of a woman reverberated at the top floor of a building. She was laughing maniacally, holding on to her stomach with one hand abd the other hand, holding unto a metallic oblect.
"Die! Die! Hahaha!" From the balcony, you'd sight her pointing to the air.
The fleet of birds which had this usual turnabout in the air continued doing their thing and many joined till they were numbered up to ten. That beautiful twirl and turn with squirt. A beautiful sight indeed. Tourists would do anything to see this. The smooth, gentle wind blew past. Making the blend more worthwhile.
The first was a wild shout from one of the birds, after the echoed sound of a revolver shot and then the dismantling of the peaceful assembly. The birds went into a frenzy and their wails were heard and increased. Then came another shot, hitting its second target who dropped dead on the beach and sounded close to the other. And then again, the shots continued.
This neighborhood is built close to the beach, off Hollywood. Only the extremely rich could afford homes in this area.
When the noise and shooting had stopped, the crazy figure could be seen from a distance at the top balcony pointing fingers in no specific direction. Within thirty minutes, all the birds flocking in the fleet, twirling beautifully, were dropped dead on the beach. Any normal person would have been nothing but astonished.
Somebody must have reported this to the police as within a short time they'd driven into the estate. Their siren resounding, again, and again throughout the streets until they made a halt at the designated building.
The doorbell to the condo rang twice. A lady, chubby enough but not fat with strands of hair on her round Caucasian face, which fell out from the packed bun. She was wearing a black body hug jumpsuit.
Hurriedly, she got out of the kitchen to attend to the anonymous guest. She had her mouth tightened in a twist. Having visitors was not a usual thing here.
For a second she paused to confirm if it was really their condo's bell that was being rung. Then it stopped, and she made a halt right in the middle of the sitting room. But then, it rang again.
Peeping through the door hole she could not make out who these men standing outside were.
"I'm coming" she yelled, the Korean accent in English was too strong.
"Hari! Go get the door" the voice of a lady resounded from inside the house. The owner of the voice must have been using the white man's house.
"Don't worry, I've got it."
"Uh," the lady in her mid-thirties took a step backward, astonished. She was shocked by the presence of the Los Angeles anti-crime patrol.
"The cops?" She whispered to herself, eyes widened.
"Good evening ma'am" the two American police greeted, respectfully before pushing past into the sitting room. From gathered information, they located the house where the shootings were heard and evidence of about ten dead eagles on the sand beach was enough proof. The apartment building was just in front of the sandy beach, like other buildings.
Madam Hari wasn't defensive; she let them in.
"Good evening" she greeted with a bit of shiver. They never get visitors except the floor cleaner who comes in regularly to clean up the house. And then Naila's doctor came in for a routine check-up. They never get visitors.
"Should I get you water?" She asked in the traditional way of welcoming visitors. They ignored her and kept on with their business of looking around the house. One officer had his chin raised, looking about and taking notes.
"Yeah, are you one miss Kim Kim em...?" The White officer said, trying to get the full name.
"Kim Hyun suh" the younger cop completed.
"Em..." Hari had her palms rubbing against each other nervously.
'What has Naila done again?' she thought.
"Em... I'm the one" she said, not minding the consequences.
Immediately, one of the officers grabbed her by the hands and went behind to handcuff her.
"Madam, we got a report from the neighbors that you were seen from the top of your condo shooting at the birds in the air, and, from our investigations, you killed ten eagles. I'm sure you know that's a crime here in America?"
Hari's mouth went agape. She bit her lips. She should have heard from them first why they were looking for Hyun.
"Oh! I am not the one, I swear"
"You have to remain silent, whatever you say now will be used against you in the court of law". With that, they all left the condo, heading for the station.
"Foolish woman" Hyun spat after they had gone out, the sound echoing through the toilet.
Lazily, Naila walked into the sitting room with a smirk on her face. Hari had taken the blame for her, yet again. The fifth time this month. She wouldn't get out of this one easily, not this time, she scoffed.
She had better call her Dad's Attorney here in L.A. before things get worse. He has been cleaning up her mess for years now and this time she'd like to see how he'd tackle this one. She held onto her tummy as she laughed maniacally.
"Hello," Hyun spoke up as the dial number went through.
"Can you get the phone to Attorney Woo?" She bit her lips impatiently.
"Good day sir" Hyun greeted at Attorney Woo's grin.
"My good girl, what is it this time?",
"Oh," Hyun smirked, spinning the telephone wire about her fingers as she pressed onto it with her head.
"..."
"Hehehe, so I need you to come bail Hari.
After the phone call, Attorney Woo affirmed he was in town and would handle the case the next day as it was too late. Naila rushed over to the dining room and used her hands to push everything to the floor. Hari was getting the table set for dinner, but the cops had to ruin it.
She scoffed.
Hari is Hyun's stepsister, who was flown from South Korea, Asia to America ten years ago to live with and take care of her.
The past ten years haven't been easy. It's been from one problem to another. Hyun. was first taken to England in the first year of her being abroad but was deported. The embassy claimed she was a threat to society. She had stabbed one of the other Korean kids in class with a pen at the neighborhood where she lived. She claimed the kid would not stop looking at her. Then again, her parents tried taking her out of South Korea, but this time not alone. That was how Hari, a girl ten years older than their sixteen-year-old daughter, came into the picture.
AFTER TALKING WITH the police, Hari was released from detention. Attorney Woo and Hyun had gone together to bail her.
Hyun kept an amused face as Hari was brought out of the detention room with her hands handcuffed. Her face was red and swollen.
"Sir you are vast with the American Laws, you know what section of the animal protection law she violated. I'm afraid one day she will go as far as killing humans, therefore, she's a threat to our American society. We have given her a week to fly out of the country back to South Korea where she belongs or we would deport her. You know what that means?" The Corporal said.
"Yes I do, thanks a lot for your understanding. We do appreciate it" Attorney Woo said as he bowed. His small figure, against the sergeants.
Hyun smiled wildly at the Corporal. She'd been waiting at the reception. She didn't go in with Attorney Woo. The detention facilities for some reason were fascinating to her, she enjoyed looking at the iron bars in which people were locked up. The handcuffs hung above. The receptionist would stop at nothing but watch her as she smiled awkwardly.
She sat comfortably with her legs crossed. Chewing and blowing out her bubble gum. At times she'd take it out of her mouth, use her hands to stretch it, and then throw it back in. The officers on duty ignored the annoying caucasian lady. It wasn't against any law. They cussed in their hearts. Hyun ignored their irked expressions, plugged her earphones, and started to hum awaiting Hari.
After a long chat, Hari was released on the conditions stipulated. Lucky enough for them, President Du had called earlier requesting the presence of his one and only daughter, Hyun back home. "Thanks a lot, Naila" Hari said looking slyly at Naila who had a grin, with a smile playing on her lips.
"DON'T WORRY, Papa called earlier, we'd be going back to Korea in a couple of days"
"Really?" Hari with her brows arched asked Attorney Woo who was the one driving. She finds it hard to believe whatever Naila said.
"By the way Lee Hari," Naila began.
Lee Hari went silent and looked on from the backseat of the convertible.
"Why did you take the blame for a crime I committed?"
"..."
"Oh! Now you've become deaf? You take the fun out of everything!" Hyun spat.
"What's the fun in being an ex-convict in a strange land, Hyun?" Attorney Woo asked softly.
"Huh, you take the fun out of everything. You're so boring Hari!!" Hyun saud as she ignored Attorney Woo's statement.
"I had to take the next flight from New York City to make it here this morning." Attorney Woo said worried, a bit concerned for the two young ladies, especially Hari, who was such an innocent and good girl.
"Hmmmph, let's go shopping," Hyun said.
"Shopping?" Attorney Woo's eyes widened in bewilderment.
"I guess so," Hari shrug. She was a bit taken aback. Hyun never goes shopping and never goes out. What was so special that made her want to go shopping? Whatever it was, it was good.
They stopped at a boutique at the side of a street and both women shopped together.
"WHEN WILL YOU be back?" A manly voice from the other end, Hyun's hands clenched the phone steadily trembling. She took in some air and sighed softly.
"Real soon pops, you must be tired now..."
"I..." beep.. beep.. she ends the call.
Another incoming call, not a saved contact. She answers.
"The job is done ma" another masculine voice but this time younger.
"Good, thank you. I'll be there in a couple of days, I hope my old man didn't get suspicious?" She rolls her googly eyes.
"Nope"
"Ok, the balance will be paid once I confirm everything is done" she ends the call.
It's been weeks, no months, years...
She lay on the beige-colored couch in the sitting room, eyes closed and fists folded. The brightness of the sun shone through the windows, the rays hitting her face, giving her skin a glow. Her mind just reminiscing over the past years, well she's been able to cope, cope only in the day. It gets chilly at night.
THE ALARM CLOCK chimes...it's 1:00 pm already, she sighs looking at her series smartwatch from Apple in China. It's time for her therapy session with Doctor Mace.
"Good morning Hyun" a lady in her late fifties wearing a gray suit greets Naila as she walks into an office.
"Good morning Doc"
"You're looking your best today"
"..."
"So how are you feeling?" She smiles satisfactorily.
"Better" Naila responds indifferently to the woman's friendly and bubbly gestures.
There's an obvious hint that she's irritated by the woman's happy demeanor.
"You went shopping?"
"Yes"
"That's good, it's very good," she smiles.
"How does it feel like to go back to a not-so-comfortable zone? How are you planning to cope? Dear, this is our last session before your leave so I want you to be as open as you possibly can. You know it's not easy going back to an obvious place of hurt but it's inevitable...remember I'm always here if you need help ..." Dr. Mace stretches her arms to Hyuns, but she declines backing off.
She looks at the old lady who has always had a genuine concern for her. Don't know why, she's so attached to her job, unlike the rest who are only interested in getting paid rather than helping. She admired her for that. Yes, her pure heart only if there were more of her in the world would have been a better place.
"I just-" Hyun pauses and laughs softly.
"Yes dear, how are you feeling?"
"I'm better, I'll take my meds and feed them meds..haha" she laughs maniacally.
"Who's them?" Dr. Mace is confused.
"You know" Naila smiles "my old mom and Dad, Dad is bedridden, need to wash him get well"
"Oh, true"
"K, bye Dr. Mace" Hyun waves goodbye.
"Bye Naila" the Lady smiles as Hyun exits the office.
Dr Mace knew behind that sinister laugh was a maniac and a daughter of Lucifer who had a lot of mischiefs planned. She just shook her head in dismay and hoped for the best.
THE FLIGHT FROM THE UNITED STATES went smoothly. Hyun and Hari checked out with their luggage. The Incheon airport, Seoul was lively with people going to various destinations. Hyun looked dashing in her mini black long-sleeve gown, showing off her nice curves. She had on shades that protected her from the blazing sun, and her tall almost skinny figure made it easy for her to be recognized. Still taking in the old-new environment she sighs looking around expectant of someone.
"Hyun!!!"
"Here she is," Hyun muttered to herself.
A chubby woman rushed to hug her, squeezing the living daylight out of her
Already getting irritated, Hyun manages to push her off. The lady wore a Nanny uniform, she was all sweaty and full of smiles.
"It's been years, my old girl is a woman" Tears formed in her eyes, but she wiped them off.
A few years back Hyun didn't have this model kind of body, her beautiful milky skin which she spent a fortune as the middle class would call it, to maintain. She was chubby as well with fat cheeks, evolution had put her up for a glow-up. She's a tall lady now, with long legs and thick thighs. Supermodel looking, her curly hair all natural and short added glamor to her look. The sun on her looked amazing. There were stares from all around but she couldn't care less, yes they should all savor her beauty.
As they walked to the parking lot, Hari would not stop chatting, asking questions. This made Hyun uncomfortable but she had no option but to put up with it because it was Hari. The Nanny, Aunt Choi has been working for her Dad for years now and is her mum's assistant and very close friend.
The drive to the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Incheon was refreshing, Lee Hari sat in the front passenger seat while Hyun took solitude in the back seat. At intervals she'd look through her phone, jotting stuff down in her phone's note application.
Hari went on about how beautiful the city of Seoul is, it's the country's federal capital, the home of commerce before Busan. Hyun was born here so she's familiar with this place.
For some freaking reasons, Hyun was enjoying Aunt Choi and Hari's chat which she did not make contributions to. She just listened and posed indifferently.
The driver made affirmative sounds with his mouth. The mmm mmm sound, he dare not be part, Hyun disliked him already.
"Wanna grab something before we stop at the hotel?" Hari asked Hyun, looking expectant for an affirmative response.
She shook her head sideways gently as if she was being forced.
"Ok, Grand Hyatt it is," she said with a little bit of disappointment and a forced smile.
Hyun could have guessed what was up with her. She knows what's up and still acts like everything is cool. Why does she feel Hyun got better abroad? Hyun does not like crowded places like the mall or supermarkets. Her tolerance level is very low now, she used up a lot of her energy from my flight at the U.S. terminal down to Asia in crowded airports, and I didn't fidget or freak out. She had enough already.
'I wonder why father refused me using his private jet' Hyun thought.
The shopping for clothes was for a change of closet and not something she'd wish to ever do, never again.
Later that night at the hotel there was a gentle knock at Hyun's hotel room door. She was too engrossed in her book to hear it at first. The knock became fiercer than the former.
"Hold," Hyun said, irritated by the disturbance.
Opening the door, standing before her was Lee Hari.
"Have you taken your medications?" She asked with a sincere look of concern.
Yeah, she's an open-book type of person, easy to read and understand, bubbly- what irked Hyun about her was her good heart. She hates mankind but this woman is an exception and she, Hyun, hates to admit it. Unlike the unruly pretentious people in the world, this woman is the opposite. She is true to herself and those around her. She was one of those who were a mental support to Hyun those years and she was always by her side cajoling her when she was in tears.
"Yes, goodnight," said Hyun and shutting the door with a forced smile.
Hyun didn't close her eyes till 5:30 am.
Returning to the Airport they took another flight to the domestic airport in Busan. The driver returned to the company, he's one of President Du's company drivers at the Seuol branch. Specially assigned to chauffeur Kim Hyun and Kim Hari during thier stay. Hyun could have taken a direct flight straight to Busan landing from New York City in the U.S. but her mom suggested she slept in Seoul at night. Hyun liked the idea, she needed to breathe one more time before meeting the family.
" HAAAAAAA!!!! my baby"
Lady Du shouted at the top of her mosquito voice to hug Hyun as she emerged checkout.
Squeezing the life out of her, Hyun had grown taller, in those days her mom used to have this modeling figure as tall as her know. She forced herself out, she held her hands.
" I missed you '' little tears forming at the side of her eyelids.
"Look how you've grown"
Hyun hated the attention she was bringing them in the midst of strangers.
The wrinkled smile with stress marks, she looked old. But at sixty-four years she looked younger.
The drive home was smooth, the old city of Busan has changed over the years. Still busy like before street workers, bus drivers, and beggars are still the same. Hyun's mum sat next to her, but she didn't pay much attention to all she'd been blabbing about, a chatterbox like Hari. She talked about Politics, how President Du almost bought the Governorship form but was advised against it, she was beaming with joy.
"Your Dad should focus on his empire and leave politics for these dangerous men here in Busan..." Mum said waiting for a response she knew she wouldn't get. Not now.
Hyun just looked her over, she smiled at her giving the never mind attitude. She shifted, and caught the prying eyes of the driver from the mirror, he'd been looking at her and her mum. He's new he doesn't know.
"The relationship probably seems strange? Huh, I'm a different person entirely, my mum and I are worlds apart. She likes blabbering like my sister Hari." Hyun said, she fed his stupid curiosity.
He smiled awkwardly.
