Chapter 1 Struggling fate

Chapter One: Struggling Fate

Elena Carter exhaled a worried breath, the heaviness of the past few months pressing down upon her chest like a vice. She clutched the worn handle of the antique café tray firmly, willing her trembling fingers to calm down. Burned coffee and the aroma of baked pastries overwhelmed the small, hectic diner where she worked, a far cry from the battle raging in her mind.

Her mother's latest hospital bill crumpled in the corner of her apron pocket, a bitter reminder of how little time she had to get it paid. The doctor's words echoed in her mind: Without the surgery, she won't make it through the year.

"Elena, table four!" Mrs. Hendricks' booming voice interrupted her somber musings.

"Coming!" she shouted, grabbing the coffee pot and rushing over to the corner table.

The corner man didn't even glance up as she approached. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with an aura of authority that put Elena on edge. The power suit, the expensive watch on his wrist-everything about him screamed authority.

But most astonishing to her wasn't his face-it was the little girl beside him, moving her legs rapidly back and forth beneath the table, her green eyes interested.

Elena put on her best customer-service smile. "Good evening. Can I get you something?"

He looked up then, and Elena nearly stumbled. His eyes were intense, cold blue staring at her as if she were a puzzle to be solved. His face was good-looking-strong jawline, dark hair well-brushed back, but there was something else. A chill. As if he had shut off his emotions years ago.

"Black coffee. No sugar," he spoke, his deep voice making her shiver in a strange manner.

"And pancakes!" The little girl grinned up at her, unaware of her father's icy face.

Elena smiled gently, smiling. "Pancakes it is."

The girl grinned. "I'm Lily!"

"Lily," she repeated, the name rolling over her tongue like a song. "A pretty name."

Lily snorted, but her father cleared his throat, reminding Elena he was still there.

"Are you always so nice to customers?" His voice was unreadable, but his eyes-there was something in them-curiosity? Humor?

Elena flinched. "I try to be."

He hummingly didn't respond, only looked at her like she was a problem he was still working out.

Shaking off the odd tension, she turned on her heel and hurried back towards the counter, heart still thudding against her ribs. Something about this man made her uneasy. It wasn't just his wealth or his overwhelming presence-it was the way he looked at her.

Preparing their order, she caught snippets of their conversation.

"Is Mommy coming back soon?" Lily asked softly.

There was silence. A heavy, long silence. Then the man's voice, firm and low.

"No, Lily. She's not."

Elena's heart constricted. She didn't know what their past was, but she recognized pain when she heard it.

When she returned with the pancakes and coffee, Lily slapped her hands together in delight, devouring the food ravenously. Elena couldn't help but smile.

"She likes you."

Elena gazed at the man-Alexander, she recalled from the name on the credit card when he had paid.

She blinked. "Excuse me?"

"Lily," he replied softly, nodding toward his daughter. "She doesn't take to people easily."

An odd warmth filled her chest. "She's a sweetheart."

Alexander didn't respond, but merely regarded her again, still unreadable as before.

It wasn't until later, as she stepped out into the chilly night air when her shift finally ended, that she realized she'd been holding her breath during their whole conversation.

And she had no idea that this would not be the last time she'd see Alexander Vaughn.

Not even close.

Chapter 2 A cold offer

Chapter Two: A Cold Offer

Elena had not slept. The moment she'd arrived home, exhaustion tugged at her, but the weight of her mother's doctor bills and the bleak reality of her own financial struggles had kept her awake. She'd remained in bed for hours, staring up at the ceiling of her tiny apartment, counting and recounting the meager money she'd been able to save. It wasn't enough.

It was never enough.

And now, having just stepped onto the sidewalk across from the glittering glass-walled building in the heart of the city, she couldn't help but wonder if she'd finally lost her mind.

Why am I here?

A folded business card rested in the coat pocket-the sole evidence that last night hadn't been a product of her imagination. After her final shift, as she'd been closing up the café, there had been a black sedan parked outside.

The window dropped, revealing the same piercing blue eyes that had intimidated her previously.

"Get in," Alexander Vaughn had commanded, his voice leaving no room for denial.

She ought to have. Every rational cell of her being had screamed to deny.

But then he'd added, "I have a business proposition for you. One that will change your life."

And in that moment, she'd gotten into the car.

Now, staring up at the large building before her, she grasped the business card tightly. Vaughn Enterprises. The company name was synonymous with the city. It represented money, power, and uncompromising ambition-something totally foreign to her life of barely enough paychecks to cover rent.

Anxious, she stepped inside.

The lobby was a universe of smooth marble, subdued colors, and designer attire. It made her acutely self-conscious in her frayed coat and scuffed boots.

"Miss Carter?" A stylish woman came up to her, hardly looking at her outfit. "Mr. Vaughn is waiting for you. This way."

Elena's stomach churned as she was led through a set of double doors into a massive office. The floor-to-ceiling windows gave her a glimpse of the city skyline, but her eyes went immediately to the man standing beside the desk, his back to her.

"You're late."

Elena flared. "I wasn't given a time."

Alexander turned to her, his piercing eyes raking over her like a hunter assessing his prey. "I thought you'd be early."

She bristled. What kind of man expects other folks to read his mind?

He gestured toward the chair on the other side of his desk. "Sit."

She hovered before taking a seat on the edge of the chair.

"You said you had a proposition," she reminded him, trying to remain calm with the way her palms dampened against her lap.

Alexander leaned back in his chair, watching her in that unreadable way that made her stomach twist. "I need a wife."

Elena blinked. "I'm sorry, what?"

"A wife. A marriage. A contract." His voice was devoid of emotion, as if discussing a business merger.

Elena let out a startled laugh, expecting him to crack a smile and admit it was a joke. He didn't.

"You're serious?"

"Very."

She nodded her head. "This-is insane. Why would you want a contract marriage?"

His hands tapped out a staccato beat on the desk, his expression not altering. "I have my reasons. My daughter, for instance. She needs stability. A caregiver."

Elena's heart melted at the mention of Lily but hardened as she forced herself to be practical.

"There are nannies for that," she said.

Alexander's jaw set. "I don't trust other people with my daughter. And I'm not going to have a succession of temporary caretakers in her life."

Elena hesitated. That explains why he was so protective of Lily...

But nonetheless. Marriage.

"And the other reason?" she asked tentatively.

"Business." His tone was brusque. "Investors have respect for stability. A man with a family earns trust. My reputation counts."

Of course. It always came down to power and control with men such as him.

Elena shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her heart racing. "Why me?"

"You intrigue Lily."

She blinked, surprised.

He continued, "She barely speaks to anyone, much less warms up to them. And last night? She liked your company. That doesn't happen very often."

Elena's throat closed. She had noticed the way Lily had clung to her, but she hadn't realized how much it meant.

But that didn't mean she could do this.

"I don't think I'm the one for this," she said hesitantly.

Alexander leaned his head to the side. "You're having a hard time."

Her breath caught.

"You have a couple of jobs. Your mother's hospital charges are adding up. You can't afford to turn down an answer that might change everything."

Elena's fists tightened. She hated that he was right. Hated that he could see through her.

Still, she lifted her chin. "And what's in it for me?"

His lips curled into the faintest smirk. "Five hundred thousand dollars."

Her lungs nearly stopped working. "What?"

"You'll receive half upfront. The other half after one year of marriage."

A year. That was all he needed.

And for that, she'd be financially free?

Her mother would be able to get the treatment she needed. She would no longer worry about eviction notices and sleepless nights of worrying if she would have enough for groceries.

It was too good to be true.

But there had to be a catch.

"And what do you expect from me...as your wife?" she asked quietly.

Alexander leaned forward, his gaze piercing. "Public appearances. Dinner parties. Playing the part of a devoted wife. Nothing more."

Her heart pounded. "So, no-?"

"No," he cut in smoothly. "Business only. No expectations aside from what's required for appearances."

Elena swallowed.

It made sense. Made logic. A simple agreement.

But there was nothing simple about marrying a man like Alexander Vaughn.

Her brain screamed at her to refuse. To get out.

But she thought of her mother. Of Lily's trusting, sweet eyes.

And she heard herself whisper, "Okay."

Alexander's eyes darkened. "That's not acceptable."

She straightened to her full height. "Fine. I agree."

His slow, pleased smile kissed his lips. "Good. You're moving in tomorrow."

Her stomach flipped over. "That soon?"

"You agreed to this. No dragging your feet," he said curtly.

Elena took a deep breath, her hands shaking on the bottom of the desk. She'd just sold out to a man she didn't even know.

But as she looked into Alexander's eyes, something struck her.

She might be entering his world.

But she refused to be swallowed by it.

Chapter 3 A wedding without love

Chapter Three: The Wedding Without Love

Elena barely had time to realize what she had agreed to when her life was thrown into upheaval.

Less than twenty-four hours after they'd signed the contract, she faced a tall mirror in an upscale bridal shop, clad in a beautiful white gown she hadn't chosen. It was stunning-dainty lace trimming the bodice, the fabric tightening at her waist before cascading in a loose water falling skirt. But to her, it was a disguise, something borrowed for an acting role she wasn't sure she'd be able to fulfill.

The stylist pulled at her, smoothing loose strands of her black hair into place as the makeup artist dusted her cheeks with a light shine.

She should be excited. Anxious, for sure.

She was. hollow.

"Why do you look like you're going to be sick?"

Elena glanced over at the face beside her. Jessica, her best friend, stood with arms crossed, wearing a bridesmaid's dress she had grabbed on a whim.

"I don't think you're actually doing this," Jess continued. "A marriage contract? This is insane, even for you."

Elena took a deep breath, smoothing out an imaginary wrinkle on her skirt. "It's a year, Jess. That's all, and I'll be able to leave with a sufficiently sized nest egg to cover Mom's care. It's not so bad."

Jessica snorted. "I still think you're selling this guy short. You barely know him, and he's-cold? Bossy? Billionaire with a tragic past? The whole brooding deal?"

Elena smiled weakly. "Something like that."

Jess looked at her cautiously, her voice soft. "Are you sure you can manage this? I mean, living with him, playing model wife, being subjected to his daughter?"

At the mention of Lily, Elena's heart squeezed. The little girl had clung to her the moment she arrived at the mansion that morning, her tiny hands gripping Elena's dress as if afraid she would disappear. It was the only thing that made this whole ordeal feel less like a business deal and more like something real.

"I'll be fine," Elena whispered. "I have to be."

Before Jess could argue, the door swung open, and a wedding planner bustled in. "It's time."

Elena's stomach knotted. Time to marry a stranger.

-

The ceremony was everything a billionaire's wedding should be-grand, extravagant, and devoid of any real warmth.

There were no heartfelt vows, no affectionate glances, no whispered 'I love you's.' Just the cool exchange of rings and the firm signing of documents, sealing their fate like a business merger.

Elena looked over at Alexander as he put the wedding ring on her finger. He looked just the same as always-immaculately dressed, his face a mask, those ice-blue eyes showing nothing.

When the time came for the kiss, he paused for the smallest second before he moved in.

A whisper.

His lips on hers with the gentlest pressure, no passion, no feeling-just a sense of obligation.

But still, in its lack of warmth, Elena's heart betrayed a small flip.

When the official said the words husband and wife, she barely heard the crowd applauding.

It was done.

She was now Elena Vaughn.

-

The reception was worse still.

Guests wandered the ballroom, toasting champagne and offering polite congratulations. Elena felt like a guest at her wedding, beside a husband who did not really seem to notice she was there.

She had attempted to make small talk, to be the radiant bride, but Alexander's chilliness made it impossible. He was courteous but aloof, never staying too close by her side.

And then, naturally, she arrived.

Victoria Hayes.

Alexander's ex-wife, who looked ravishing in a scarlet gown hugging her like a second skin. She swept in as though she owned the estate still, her eyes landing on Elena with predatory glee.

"You are the new Mrs. Vaughn," Victoria stated, her tone dripping with contempt. "How. surprising."

Elena smiled tightly. "It's great to meet you."

Victoria tilted her head, as if she was studying a puzzle that didn't make sense. "I must say, I never thought Alexander would marry again. He's not exactly the sentimental type." She leaned in a bit, speaking in a hushed tone. "Then again, this doesn't seem like much of a love affair, does it?"

Elena's hand curled around the base of her champagne glass. She knew Victoria was teasing her, testing for a reaction.

It wasn't given. A hard hand came down on her waist.

Alexander.

His hand surprised her, his fingers resting lightly on her side-a warning unsaid.

"I see you haven't changed, Victoria," he drawled, his voice cool, with a warning hint.

Victoria's smile came sweetly. "And I see you have." Her eye expanded to where his hand rested on Elena's waist before giving a slow, knowing smirk. "How interesting."

She turned away with an air of satisfaction, leaving behind a heavy tension between Elena and Alexander.

Elena breathed slowly. "She hates me."

"She's irrelevant," Alexander said brusquely, jerking his hand away as soon as he had placed it there.

Elena moved next to him. "Why did you do that?"

"Do what?"

"Touch me. In public."

His expression was blank. "Appearances, Elena. That's what this is, isn't it?"

Yes. Appearances.

And so why was her skin still burning where his hand had rested?

-

The night was dragged out with dry small talk and forced smiles, but Elena wanted only to disappear.

Once the reception finally closed, they were led into the waiting limousine. As soon as the doors closed behind them, quiet filled the room.

Alexander refused to glance her way. He sat on the other side of the vehicle, his back ramrod straight, his eyes cast out the window.

Elena swallowed hard. "That was... exhausting."

He didn't answer.

Time ticked in oppressive silence.

"Look," she said finally, squirming restlessly, "I know that this is just a contract, but I do think we should at least try to be civilized. We're going to be sharing the same house, bringing Lily up together. It doesn't have to be so-"

He turned to her then, his gaze cold. "So what?"

"So cold," she admitted quietly.

Something flickered in his eyes, something almost vulnerable, but it vanished before she could place it.

"I don't believe in unnecessary attachments, Elena," he answered finally. "This is a business arrangement. That's all it will ever be."

Her breast hurt. She had known it-had accepted it from the beginning.

Why did hearing him say it feel so painful, though?

She pulled away from him, staring out the window as city lights whizzed by in a blur.

She had married a man who did not believe in love.

And yet, as the car rumbled up to the manor house, she couldn't help but feel that she had just committed the worst thing of her entire life.
