Chapter 1 Mirabel's POV

I walked through the front door of ST Andrews hospital holding a bouquet of beautiful flowers. I made way for a woman pushing a wheelchair that her husband sat on. I waved at them silently as I continued my journey.

"Good morning Mirabel. It's a pleasant morning, isn't it?" Angela, the nurse at the front desk asked when I approached her.

I smiled as I nodded in response to her question. Other nurses around proceeded to greet me too and I kept on my usual charade of pretending to be happy.

Truthfully, I hated coming to this depressing hospital, but I had no other choice. My mother had been admitted here six months ago after an accident which caused her to go into a coma, and my father with my brother died on the spot. In few few minutes, my life changed.

I entered my mother's room and glanced at how sickly she looked. A tear almost escaped my eyes but I strengthened myself to do what I wanted to do then leave to get to my work.

I replaced the flowers I had brought before with fresh ones and opened the curtains to bring in more lightning to the room. I took a chair and placed it beside my mother's bed then held her hand.

"Mum, please come back to me" I said to myself admist sobs.

The door opened and Dr. Sullivan entered with a smile on his face when he saw me.

"Mirabel, I'm happy you came today. I was even about to give you a call" He said then went on to check my mother's vitas among other things.

"How is she looking, doc?" I asked, deeply concerned.

I had been praying that one of these days, when I got to the hospital, I would get good news of my mother's health, but things haven't been like that.

"Not good, Mirabel, especially now that we're not giving her the usual medication" Dr. Sullivan replied.

I bowed my head. Due to the fact that my new boss had authorized a slash in the salaries of most workers, me inclusive, I had not been able to afford the usual medication as I used to. I had tried to appeal to him but I've never even had the chance to meet him.

Several times I had gone to his office, his secretary and bodyguards always turned me back. I don't know if this was his way of laughing at his employees who are unable to afford certain things like him, but I couldn't help but hate him for not enabling me give my mother the medication she needs.

"Is there anything we can do? I mean something we can come up with? Like a test drug?" I asked.

Dr. Sullivan shook his head.

"I don't think there is any of such currently" Dr. Sullivan moved closer to me and put his hand on my shoulder. "I know things are really hard for you, but you need to come up with the finances as soon as possible or you risk your mother never waking up again."

With that, Dr. Sullivan walked out of the room, leaving me to my thoughts. I didn't know what to do anymore. I contemplated going to meet my ex boyfriend, Anthony, and ask if he could offer financial aid, but I removed that thought from my head because he would surely ask me to come back to him, and I wasn't going to do that.

Another thought crossed my mind. I wondered if I should try my luck in going to ask my boss again for him to please put my salary back to the way it was so I could give my mother the proper medication.

Things were going well in the company at first until we go news that the ownership was transfered to the CEO's son. No one had see him since he came into the company but his policy about slashing employees salaries made his presence known.

Although several employees left because they were angered at the salary slash, I stayed because I didn't have any other choice. I thought If I stuck with the job despite the uncomfortable circumstances, my boss might return things to the way they originally were.

My phone buzzed, bringing me out of my thoughts. It was a text from my coworker telling me to quickly come back to work. Judging from the urgency in her text, I felt there was an emergency and I needed to be there as soon as possible.

"Mum, I'll be back" I kissed my mother on her forehead then exited the room.

* * * * * *

I walked inside the reception and was startled at the commotion happening. Several employees were complaining about something I couldn't quite make out. I moved closer to get more information on what was the cause of their unrest.

"Mirabel, you won't believe it" I turned to see my friend walking towards me holding an envelope.

"What? What is it?" I asked impatiently.

I was anxious to know what was the cause of the entire ruckus.

"The boss is letting a lot of us go so he could bring in new workers" She replied.

I couldn't believe my ears. I walked away from her and made my way to where one of the guards stood.

I prayed internally that I wasn't fired because I really needed my job so I could cater for my mother's needs. If I wasn't employed anymore and I had no way to bring money for her treatment, she could never wake up, or worse, die.

"Please I need to get inside" I told the guard then tried to pass through, but he stopped me immediately.

"Let me check if you're among the fired employees" he said.

As the guard looked through his tablet containing names of fired employees, I prayed once again. I hoped I wasn't among those names, if not, I wouldn't know my next course of action.

"I'm sorry but your name is here. You will receive your sack letter shortly" he said.

It felt like my entire world had burnt into ashes. I stared blankly at him, willing myself to say something but I couldn't. My life, and that of my mother, was over.

Chapter 2 Thomas' POV

"Right this way, sir" My guards helped me clear a path through the small crowd of angry employees whom I had issued job termination letters.

I could see from their angry faces that they were pissed at what was happening, but there was nothing I could do. I found them insufficient in being able to carry out their jobs properly and I had no other choice but to send them away.

At first I had tried to send them away by slashing their salaries more than half, but that didn't work. When I saw that a few stubborn ones still remained, I decided to send them out of my company and recruit people I was sure would be able to do their jobs well.

"Please, let me speak to the boss" I heard a woman say as I made my way with my bodyguards to another passage which lead to an alternative exit.

"I'm sorry, but you can't" the guard said.

I looked at the lady and for a second, our eyes locked on each other. She had an unmistakable beauty, I had to admit, too bad she was being kicked out of my company.

"Please, I really need this job, I beg of you".

Her words gradually trailed off as I went down the hallway to the door which my father had constructed just Incase something like this happens. He was a man that always thought ahead.

"We'll be at the restaurant in five minutes" my driver assured me and I smiled.

Meeting with my father's confidant and most loyal friend, Mr. Layson, wasn't exactly how I had intended to spend my afternoon. He most probably wanted to inquire about my fiancee which I had promised to introduce to him.

I sighed exhaustively. Why my father had put the condition in his will that I must be engaged in other for me to have complete power over the company was such a pain in the ass. And worst of all, he made Mr. Layson in charge of seeing that I fulfill said condition.

"We've arrived, sir" my driver announced.

I glanced at the fancy restaurant with an annoyed look. I wished the drive had been longer. I composed myself immediately I got out of my vehicle and walked in with my bodyguards.

I saw Mr. Layson already seated at a beautifully decorated table and made my way to him.

"Fabulous, isn't it, this restaurant?" Mr. Layson asked as I sat down opposite him.

"It is, but I've been to far better ones" I answered.

"I'm sure, especially due to your reputation as a playboy, but I'm happy you've changed" Mr. Layson said.

Waiters came to our table with food, which made me conclude Mr. Layson had ordered ahead of time.

I had to admit, I was a bit anxious. Not so much that I was scared shitless, there wasn't a man who could do that to me, but everytime I had met with this man, something undesirable came out of it.

When my father died, he willed the company to me under certain conditions. Desperate to gain ownership of the company that's rightfully mine, I had lied to Mr. Layson, telling him I was engaged and I would reveal her when I felt the time was right.

He trusted me to fulfil my promise and I guessed from his urgent call that his patience for me was beginning to run out.

"Do you know why I called you to join me on this lovely evening?" Mr. Layson asked while he used his knife to meticulously cut a piece of steak on his plate.

"No, I don't have a clue" I lied then took a bite of my salad.

I feared Mr. Layson had figured out I've been serving him lies. I needed to keep up this facade to make sure I am not discovered.

"Oh, is that so?" He asked again, taking his time to cut the steak on his plate, which was beginning to get very annoying.

I swallowed a bile in my throat. There's no way Mr. Layson had found out I was lying to him, only if someone I trusted had gone to reveal everything to him, but that was impossible because the only person who knew the truth was my sister and she was currently out of the country.

"Yes. I honestly don't know why you scheduled a meeting on such short notice. I'm really busy, you know. I hope there's no problem" I said, maintaining my calm and cool demeanor.

"I hope so too. I have been waiting for you to present to me the woman you're engaged to, but you haven't done so. It should interest you that I still have enough powers to take back yourcompany if I feel it's not in good hands " Mr. Layson took a bite of his steak after such a long time of trying to cut it.

A frown appeared on my face. Mr. Layson was actively trying to threaten me and I didn't like it.

"I'm sorry, but like I said earlier, I've been quite busy with a lot of things in my company and I sort of forgot what I was supposed to do regarding the matter of introductions. However, I promise to set things in motion as soon as possible" I reassured the old man.

"Honestly, this issue had actually slipped my mind until I stumbled onto some things in your room" Mr. Layson said when he was done chewing his food.

I was confused.

"What do you mean my room? Were you in my house earlier today?" I asked.

"Yes, I was. I was moving some of your father's things to a store house and I entered your room" Mr. Layson explained.

"You mean you broke into my room" I corrected him.

My frowned deepened and it was pretty much obvious I didn't like where this conversation was going.

"That's a harsh way of putting it. I merely wanted to check if you had any of your father's things in your room and I came across your disgusting contracts which you used during your playboy days to cajole women into taking a part in your lewd sexual desires" Mr. Layson made sure to keep eye contact with me.

"I'm engaged, there's no need for that anymore" I replied.

"Well, give my regards to your fiancee, I look forward to meeting her" Mr. Layson cleaned his mouth with a napkin then stood up. "You have until tomorrow."

I was taken aback by Mr. Layson's demands. He had given me an ultimatum which I had to adhere to.

As I sat alone at the table, I thought of several ways to get out of this problem. I would make sure to keep him distracted for a couple days, but that wouldn't solve the problem permanently. I needed a lasting solution.

I suddenly remembered the beautiful woman I had seen crying in my company earlier and I smiled sinisterly as I thought on how she would be a perfect puppet.

Chapter 3 Mirabel's POV

I couldn't help but cry while I sat beside my mother's bed and feel heartbroken when thoughts of her never waking up flooded my mind like a tsunami.

I had told the doctors what happened in my workplace, but there was nothing they could do. They simply told me I had two days to come up with the payments or they would have no choice but to leave my mother's treatment.

As tears continued pouring down my eyes, I could feel my phone vibrating in my purse which was placed on a table. I picked up my phone, surprised it was an unknown number and considered if I should answer it or not. After much contemplating, I chose the former.

"Hello, am I on to miss Brooks?" A manly voice on the other end asked.

I didn't quite know who exactly it was talking to, but it sounded like someone that knew me to an extent.

"Yes, that's me. Is there anyway I can help you?" I asked nervously.

"Your late father, God rest his soul, procured a loan from this establishment to help his business which was about to get bankrupt. He was able to get the money, but due to his death, and no means at which to get the money back, we have decided to seize all of his properties, including the house you currently live in."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I immediately wanted to disappear, away from the problems surrounding me and other things that caused me to be plundered into sorrow.

I do recall my father taking the loan, despite pleas from me and my mother, but I don't really remember how much it was.

"Please, how much is it? I'm sure I can come up with something" I said.

"I don't think you can. The money is $30 billion" He said.

I almost chocked on my spit on hearing the loan amount. Now that my father, along with my brother, was dead and my mother is in a coma, coupled with the fact that I had just lost my job, there was no way I could come up with that huge sum of money.

"You can't be serious. I don't remember him taking such an amount as loan" I argued.

"Well, he did, and you're required to pay before this week runs out. Failure to do so would result in consequences you wouldn't be able to handle, trust me."

With that, the call came to an end. My phone dropped from my hand and tears swarmed my eyes then I buried my face into my mother's bed. I didn't know what to do. It was like I had hit a brick wall. My entire world was crashing before my eyes.

* * * * *

I slowly hiked my way home, filled with a thousand thoughts on how I could get the money I needed to take care of my mother's medication, and my father's debt. Nothing came to mind, and I felt alone.

My phone vibrated again, bringing me out of my thoughts. I saw it was another unknown number and I merely ignored it. Minutes later, it rang again and again, causing me to pickup the call in annoyance.

"What!?" I asked angrily.

"First of all, I do not like being ignored, just as much as I hate being shouted on" A calm but stern voice said.

Apologetic that I had shouted at a stranger, I quickly regained myself.

"I'm sorry" I apologized.

"It's no big deal, but never try it again" He brushed it off.

"Please who is this?" I asked, picking my words carefully.

"This is Thomas Hugh, the CEO of the company you were fired from earlier today" he said.

I stopped walking to let his words sink in. I had numerous questions wanting to be answered, but I managed to say only one.

"How did you get my number?" I asked.

"That shouldn't concern you. All you need to know is that I am here to help clear all your problems, including your father's debt" Thomas said.

My eyes nearly dropped out of their sockets at the mention of my father's debt which was a secret. It was impossible he had found out about my father's debt, except he made sure I was investigated. I couldn't help but wonder why. What was his ulterior motive?

"How do you know about that?" I asked.

If he knew about my father's $30 billion debt, then he surely knew about the accident and my mother's coma. I was beginning to get terrified of him.

"Like I said earlier, you do not need to know that. Just be rest assured that I can be of help to you, $30 billion is chicken change compared to what I have in my account" he said.

My mind ran in different directions, trying to figure out why he had decided to contact me saying he could help sort out my problems when, apart from what his investigation had told him, he knew nothing about me.

"Thank you, I really appreciate you for this" I said.

"I'm sure you do. I want you to come to my office tomorrow morning so we can talk more on this" Thomas instructed.

Knowing fully well that I had nowhere and nothing else to do the next day, I apromptly agreed. After all, this was a person who had come to me ready to help ease away all the problems that caused my heart to ache, there wasn't any harm in hearing him out.

"I look forward to it. I'm really thankful that you offered to help. You don't know how you have saved me from having to live on the streets" I said.

"Just make sure you come early. I will not hesitate to take away my help if you come late" He said then hung up.

As I continued my journey back home, I couldn't help but feel anxious to what the outcome of tomorrow's meeting would be.
