"Let go of me!" Meg yelled, pulling her arms away from Natalie's grip.
Slap!
"How dare you disobey me? I paid your family well for this marriage and you must do as I say" Natalie retorted.
Meg's tender cheek burned and turned red. She gently caressed it with her smooth palm. Tears welled up in her eyes as she opened her mouth to defend herself, but Natalie did not give her such liberty.
"What? Say one more word and I will send you to the grave" he shrieked.
He held her tiny arms tightly and squeezed them so that she had no room to escape.
Meg sobbed, the pain was unbearable, but there was no way she could fight back considering the manner he clutched her arms.
"You are hurting me, Natalie" she whispered
"I can as well have you killed, and your parents will do nothing about it. Cross my line next time and you will have yourself to blame"Natalie sneered and shoved her hard.
Meg didn't see that coming, she had a great fall and almost broke her core.
"Ouch," she cried out, holding her hurting waist.
Not satisfied with his cruelty, he went after her again, this time determined to be more brutal with her.
Unfortunately, Natalie felt a strong arm clasp him up and smack his back hard on the wall that stood behind them before he could get near her.
He waggled in an attempt to free himself from the intruder, but the stranger held him firmly.
It was at this point that lightning glimmered and Natalie was able to get a peek at his cold and unfriendly face.
"Lay another finger on her and you will be a dead man," the stranger muttered coldly.
His tone was void of any emotions, thick and dry was his voice. Cold chilly ran down Natalie's spine. Never in his life had he seen a man so intimidating with the allure of power and arrogance.
Glancing at his shivering body, the stranger shoved him hard, this made Natalie bang his ass on the ground. That was when he regretted bullying his wife outside the empty street.
The man then turned to Meg who was still whimpering on the floor and leaned to her level.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
Meg nodded her head. The man gently pulled her up to her feet.
"I will take you to the doctor," he whispered.
"No, thanks. I will be alright" Meg mumbled.
"Do you mind riding home with me?" He asked
"Don't worry, I will find my way home," Meg
replied. Looking toward Natalie.
"Are you sure you want to be with him"? The man asked following her gaze
He stared coldly at Natalie who was still sitting on the floor skulking and dared not make a move.
Meg nodded her head again. She was too weak to talk and also too surprised to see Natalie so calm and humble before the intruder.
Natalie doesn't know who the stranger was and so can't afford to offend the wrong person. He kept muted and watched the stranger conversing with his wife as if she belonged to him. He can only swear to deal with her later when they get home.
However, as if the man read his mind he turned to Meg and said.
"You can always find me in Marco's group if he troubles you again," he cast another murderous stare at Natalie and strode towards his car.
Natalie was relieved when he finally entered his car and drove out. He glanced at Meg with contempt. Meg thought he was coming back for her, but to her uttermost surprise, Natalie stood up and strode toward his car.
Meg followed behind, but before she could come closer, Natalie entered the car and zoomed off.
Leaving her alone in the dark and lonely street. Meg tried running after the car, but Natalie sped into the major road without looking back.
Meg was dejected and confused as she gazed at her husband's car driving deeper into the main road.
Another set of tears filled her eyes. She peered around and saw herself alone in the middle of a murky boulevard, fear gripped her. The tears in her eyes started dripping down.
"What will I do now?" She thought in her mind.
Without seeing anyone around, and the sky not smiling at all, The whole star suddenly vanished from the sky leaving its tails of thick cloud behind. Meg waited for a cab but found none in sight.
Thunder rumbled indicating that it was about to rain. She then made up her mind to trek home before the downpour began.
Another set of lightning flashed, and that was when she noticed her company, a drunken fellow staggering and sauntering towards her. He looked unkempt and ragged, his appearance frightening Meg the more.
The fellow saw her and smirked revealing his rotten brown teeth which Meg couldn't see in the dark.
Meg's heart skipped in rapid succession and she began to tremble. She promptly shifted in the opposite path and headed towards home.
The drunken fellow joined her path, discerning his presence behind her, Meg quickened her step.
Astonished at the man's increased speed, goosebumps filled her membrane,
"Was he coming after me?" she muttered in fear and battered emotions filled with wild creepy thoughts.
To answer herself the question, she pulled out her slippers and started racing forward.
The fellow groaned and raced after her. Like a predator running after his prey. Seeing his reaction, Meg got arrested by fear, the effort to push forward brought her to the floor.
Her companion grinned mischievously and slowed down a little with the confidence that he had conquered her. Grabbing the opportunity, Meg, sprang up from the ground and sped at high velocity.
Her lungs tightened and her throat dry, her breath threatened to cease due to lack of oxygen, but she refused to give up despite her discomfort.
Seeing her predator coming closer gave her the motivation to continue running until she got to the end of the street and smartly swerved left at the same time, the rain began to fall, obscuring her vision and making her bump into hard and stiff objects, she was instantly brought to a stop.
"Can't you see?"
A familiar cold voice sounded in her ears. She perked up and saw the stranger standing before her.
Meg thought she slammed her body on a stone, but this certainly was not a stone, but a man's chest. The stranger that saved her from Natalie a few minutes ago.
She felt relieved, yet afraid of his domineering and cold demeanor. He had the allure that sends a chill to her spine.
"Why are you here?" The stranger asked.
"I... I..."
" Where is your husband?" the stranger asked almost immediately stopping Meg from babbling.
"How did he know I was married? I never introduced Natalie as my husband to him" Meg thought.
" Don't you think that it's too dangerous out here?" His deep voice sounded again.
Marco's words fetched Meg back to reality. It was only then she remembered her chaser. She looked back, but the man has gone. She felt glad and faced the stranger.
"Oh yeah. Am about to go home. Thanks for helping me out.
"I will be on my way," she said.
She smiled sweetly at him, and Marco nodded. Meg waited for Marco to give way, but he stood still.
"Yeah goodnight," she said again and flashed the most beautiful smile on her face. However, Marco moved not.
Meg's confused eyes docked on Marco's body and She saw how her hands shamelessly clenched his shirt, securely it firmly in an embrace.
She felt embarrassed instantly and withdrew her hands from his jacket.
Meg became guilty immediately after she saw that her wet dress had soiled his expensive clothes.
"I'm so sorry." Meg apologized and immediately cleaned the stranger's clothes with her wet hands.
The man was puzzled at her actions but kept mute. Unfortunately, Meg did not succeed in drying the clothes with her hands instead, she successfully wet the cloth even more.
When she was done she thanked the man again and turned to leave.
"Stop." The man ordered.
Meg stopped. He pulled out his jacket and covered her shivering body.
"I will drive you home and don't try to stop me" he commanded.
With that, Marco's powerful hands gripped her soft hand and they moved towards his car.
Meg hesitates to enter the car. She can't soil this expensive car with her wet clothes, not after how he saved her twice this night. She thought in her mind.
However, Marco gently pushed her inside the car and sat comfortably beside her.
"Move" he ordered the driver.
"To Where sir?" The driver asked.
He looked at Meg to provide the information.
"Bayland" she answered.
Meg's mind went back to the incident that happened a few minutes back immediately she mentioned Bayland.
"What if this stranger did not appear on time what would have happened to her?" She wondered and cursed Natalie for leaving her behind.
" What kind of man left his wife In the middle of the night, on a lonely path". Meg thought in her heart and her hatred for Natalie increased.
She stole a gaze at the stranger and felt uncomfortable. Even though she could not see his face very clearly, The man was cold and quiet.
He looked powerful and arrogant. His domineering demeanor alone makes her quiver. Meg shifted further to the door and avoided him like a plaque. She wouldn't want to annoy him.
Marco saw how uncomfortable she was and peeked through the window. He can't imagine how a man could be so weird as to leave his wife alone in a very dangerous street.
"The woman looked scared yet he abandoned her on the road. She was not even strong enough to protect herself." Marco thought in his mind.
He looked at Meg's fragile body again and face the window
Marco stopped to pick up his drugs from the pharmacy when he saw Natalie coming out from the bar with a blonde woman. The blonde was almost the same age as his wife.
Since Natalie was with Meg a few minutes back, and now with a blonde, that means he left his wife behind to be with his mistress. Marco reasoned.
He quickly ordered his driver to move back to the spot he first saw them and that was when Meg stumbled on him.
The car suddenly halted, causing the two passengers in the back seat to bump into each other's arms. Marco found himself gripping Meg's fragile body providing her with maximum protection.
"What is wrong with you," Marco yelled at the driver.
"I'm sorry boss. We have reached our destination" he answered.
"Are you alright?" Marco asked Meg before he loosened his arms from her body.
"I'm fine," Meg mumbled and pulled herself together.
"Thank you for the ride," she whispered and clasped the door handle.
Marco nodded his head and Meg exited from the car. He watched her walk inside an old duplex that stood in the center of the middle-class neighborhood.
"Move" Marco ordered his driver immediately Meg closed her gate.
Meg walked into their apartment and noticed that the place was unusually quiet. She felt relieved that Natalie was not home. She can at least have some peace before he returned. She mumbled before she settles down on the couch.
After a while, Meg headed upstairs to her room.
However, before she could reach the top of the staircase Natalie's voice sounded in her ears.
"And where are you coming from?"
Meg was startled, she looked up and saw Natalie.
She gulped down the lump in her throat, how could she answer such an absurd question when he was the one that abandoned her on the road?
The two of them were together not long ago before he left her behind. Before she could say anything the next question sounded harshly in her ears.
"Who was that man that brought you home?" He queries again.
Meg ignored him and strode upstairs. However, Natalie got angry, He grabbed her arms and pulled her back, the moment, she came close.
He held her tightly and his nails dug deep into her flesh.
"Let go of me," she cried.
"How dare you walk out on me when I am still talking?
" Now tell me, Who was that man that brought you home?" he shrieked and shook her violently.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she watched Natalie openly displaying his hatred toward her. He never loved her and she knew it. If not because of her father's illness, she wouldn't have been married to him. He married her just to punish her family because of the debt they owed him.
Meg's silence provokes Natalie further. He hauled her downstairs and punched her hard in the stomach, kicking and yelling at her in anger.
"How dare you cheat on me? I paid enormously for this marriage yet you cheat on me" He yelled
And continued kicking at her harder. When he was satisfied, he gave her one last kick at her ass and moved up to his room. He was really angry and Meg's presence only made it worse.
Meg was greatly bruised. Her stomach hurts and her ribs are broken. She cried bitterly. Coughing and spitting blood.
After a while, she dragged herself to her room and lay down on the bed, when sleep gradually overtook her.
Meg woke up the next morning and saw how disheveled she was. She quickly made her way to the bathroom and filled her bathtub with hot water. She let herself into the water and then closed her eyes in meditation. Her whole body still hurt, however, the water was bringing calmness and the healing that she desired.
She let her mind wander to what transpired between her and Natalie the previous night. Her eyes filled up with tears as she recalled the event that took her out earlier that night.
Meg just came back from work where she was working as a waitress at the local bar when she received an urgent call from her mother.
"Your father's condition has worsened and the doctors threatened to throw him out if we did not pay in more money by tomorrow," she said.
Meg could hear her mother sobbing through the phone. She has become used to hearing her mother sob on the phone and so she was calm.
"You have to do something urgently Meg, I don't want to lose my husband" she cried.
Meg did not wish to lose his father either.
She has worked herself out trying to get money for her father's surgery. Yet she was yet to get the required amount.
However, she still has some savings left, and she hopes to give them to the hospital so that her father will get some treatment pending when a miracle will happen and she will be able to pay for his surgery.
Unfortunately, Meg went to her piggery box and broke it. To her greatest surprise, her money was gone. She was sure she had put in more than a thousand bucks in the box, but they were all gone. She lived with no one in her apartment but Natalie.
And so she rushed out that night in search of Natalie. She knew where she would find him and that was at the Best bar where he spends his money on his strange women.
True to her words, Natalie was having a great time with a young blonde who was almost her age. This enraged Meg and without warning she landed her tiny hands on his cheeks.
Here she was working her ass out to save for her father's Illness and all he could do was to spend her hard-earned money on women.
Natalie was stunned. Since when did she grow wings? He forcefully grabbed her wrists the moment he came out of the shock and dragged her out of the bar. She was lucky he did not beat her to a stupor inside the bar like he always does, instead, he chose to beat her up outside the bar.
He drove her to a lonely street where no one could save her and then this strange man came just in time before she could get her bones broken. Unfortunately, that did not stop her ordeal. Natalie still had his way when she got home.
Meg sighed and got out of the tub and dried herself up. She managed to conceal her bruises with makeup and dressed up for work. Hoping to see her father later in the day.
She got to the Imperial Hotel where she worked as a receptionist during the daytime. She usually takes a break in the afternoon so she can rest for her Night duty at the local bar. Meg works this hard just to pay for her father's hospital bills.
Meg rushed into the staff room to change into her uniform immediately after she came in. She has less than ten minutes to start her duty for the day. She came into the room and saw her best friend Lisa wearing her uniform.
"Hah, Lisa you are here already," Meg said and grabbed her clothes from her locker.
"Natalie beat you up again," Lisa asked, looking deeply into her best friend's eyes. Without responding to her greetings. Like always Meg nodded her head. Even if she lied to everyone, she can't lie to Lisa because she always finds out the truth.
However, The first thing Lisa noticed the moment Meg stepped in was her swollen face. Despite Meg's efforts to cover it up with her makeup, yet, the bruise was still obvious in Lisa's eyes.
Maybe because Lisa always has this expectation now and then that Natalie will beat her friend up or maybe it was a constant phenomenon in Meg's life that Lisa constantly witnessed. Whatever the case is, Lisa always sees the bruises even when others don't.
"Why can't you walk out of that abusive marriage? For crying out loud that man is a beast." Lisa yelled.
"Do you want him to kill you before you could walk away?" Lisa asked
