The morning sun is shining brightly today. A sturdy and handsome young man enters the office area, one of the buildings belonging to him. His name is King Elwood, commonly known as King, a 27-year-old biracial American-Indonesian man.
Today marks his inauguration as the new CEO of his father's company, where his father is currently the owner. He heads to a spacious hall filled with several company executives who are witnessing his appointment as the CEO of Quality Corporation.
The welcoming speech begins with Mr. Roland Elwood, the owner and King's father. Applauses echo in the room, and congratulatory flower bouquets start appearing, sent by colleagues from Quality Corporation.
However, this feels tedious to King; he wants to escape this place quickly. He never desired this position; he wants freedom and doesn't want to be burdened with corporate affairs. But due to his father's unquestionable command, he reluctantly accepts it.
After the CEO's inauguration event, he enters his office. King is seen lounging on the sofa, playing games on his phone. Standing beside him is a young man named Juyan, his bodyguard.
"Man, let me know if Roland comes in here," he says to Juyan.
"Sure, young master," Juyan responds promptly. Unbeknownst to them, Mr. Roland suddenly enters the CEO's room.
"King, what are you doing?" King is startled and sits up on the sofa. He glares at Juyan, who instantly becomes nervous.
"Your father appointed you as CEO to enhance our company, not to make it chaotic. When will you grow up?" Mr. Roland scolds angrily. But King smirks, scratching his non-itchy head.
"Do you know how hard your late grandfather worked to build this company? Please focus enough on your games. Remember, you're almost thirty," he adds.
"Oh, come on, Dad, your son is only twenty-seven. There are still three more years until thirty; you should get your facts right," King retorts nonchalantly.
"Be quiet!" Mr. Roland snaps in frustration. Suddenly, King's phone rings; it's his mother calling. He answers the call.
"Hello, my dear mom, yes, Mom, Dad is making a fuss again. I'll handle it, okay, Mom? Love you so much." King ends the call. Despite his rebellious nature, he deeply loves his mother and obeys her every word, Mrs. Yesi.
Once Mr. Roland leaves his office, King starts inspecting the room. Then he says, "Juyan, redesign this room; it's so outdated. I want an interior that suits my style; you know, we're still young."
Juyan immediately presents several luxurious interior designs to King, but none capture his interest.
"Why does everything look so outdated? It's not my style at all!" he grumbles.
"Young master, what do you want, then?" Juan asks, confused.
"I want the interior of my office to be one of a kind in the world. Advertise it extensively online, and find an interior designer who can transform this room's atmosphere."
"Instruct them to submit their designs and offer the highest price to the winner," King elaborates.
"Understood, young master," Juyan replies and promptly carries out King's instructions.
Juyan creates an online ad and spreads it. Within five minutes, the ad had been viewed by almost a million people, and several designers started submitting their designs.
Currently, King is resting in a room resembling a mini apartment within the office premises, directly connected to the CEO's office. The room is quite spacious, containing a bedroom, a bathroom, a dining area, a living room, and a small pantry to serve meals.
His voice echoes from inside the mini apartment, "Juyan!" Upon hearing his boss's shout, Juyan quickly enters the room.
"Ready, sir!" he says.
"Is this a home or a chicken coop? It's so messy. Redesign this room too, offer an exorbitant price for the redesign," King commands.
"Sir. I'll get it done," Juyan says. King opens the curtains of transparent glass windows, revealing a bustling view of Jakarta city. The CEO's office is located on the top floor.
"I want to take a nap. If someone is looking for me, find a good excuse. I'm feeling lazy. If it's urgent, ask Wina to handle it first," King instructs.
"Understood, sir. I'll handle it!" Juyan replies confidently.
Juyan exits the mini apartment and heads to the CEO's office. He adds the modifications requested by King and then posts the details online. Afterwards, he contacts Wina to enter the CEO's office. The room is spacious, with two working desks, one for King and another for himself.
King doesn't like anyone else sharing his office except for Juyan, his best friend and personal bodyguard. It's a strict requirement set by his father before appointing him as CEO. Wina acts as Juyan's secretary; anything related to the King must go through Juyan, not directly to the King.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Juyan," Wina's voice is heard.
"Come in," he says. Wina enters the CEO's room, looking around to find King. She's secretly captivated by King's handsomeness. Juyan notices her behaviour and immediately warns her.
"Mrs. Wina, please focus on your work here and don't expect more. If you want to have a long career in this office," he says sharply, staring at Wina.
Wina is instantly captivated by Juyan. She thinks,
"I shouldn't disturb the boss, but maybe I can tease his bodyguard," then she smiles at Juyan and says, "Yes, Juyan's bodyguard."
Juyan shivers; apparently, Wina's smile is deadly.
"Oh, you shameless flirt," he mutters under his breath. He quickly orders her to leave the room.
Wina leaves the room, her heart pounding. She's not usually bold enough to flirt with men, but she feels compelled to protect herself as a widow. If she's known as flirtatious, nobody would want her; that's what Wina, the single mother, thinks after her husband leaves her.
King is still awake, but suddenly, he murmurs a woman's name. He appears to be in intense pain, his body covered in cold sweat.
"Gladis ... don't leave me ... I beg you ... Gladis ... give me a chance to change everything ... Gladis ... no ... don't go ..." Juyan, busy on his laptop, rushes into the mini apartment upon hearing King's heart-wrenching screams.
Juyan entered the room and saw King drenched in sweat all over his body. He gently woke him up. "Young master, are you okay?" King instantly woke up from his dream and sat up on the bed.
"Take me to her, now!" Juyan immediately complied with his boss's command. He called King's private driver to get ready. They were on their way to a luxurious cemetery in the Karawang area.
King stepped out of the car carrying a bouquet of roses prepared by the driver earlier. He walked, followed by Juyan, towards the grave of a girl named Gladis.
Gladis is the only woman who could make King fall in love deeply. He fell head over heels for Gladis, but fate had other plans. A disease eating away at Gladis's body forced him to let her go forever.
He had tried various ways to save Gladis, but she chose to surrender and let go peacefully. It was his biggest regret when he agreed to Gladis's request, as he still remembered and missed her until this moment. It is precisely two years today since Gladis passed away, but he still couldn't forget his lover.
The car drove back to Jakarta. He went straight to his apartment. Coincidentally, his bodyguard also lived in the same apartment building as him. He had purchased an adjacent apartment for his bodyguard, so Juyan took care of King's needs twenty-four hours a day.
King reached his apartment.
"I want to take a long shower, then I'll eat," he said, heading to his room. Juyan immediately ordered food for him through an online food delivery service. After that, he went inside the apartment. He took the opportunity to clean himself while his boss was still bathing, a process that King said would take a long time.
Juyan didn't feel uncomfortable at all taking care of his boss; in fact, he enjoyed doing it. He contacted Wina, King's secretary, to determine if urgent matters required King's signature. Wina informed him that the office situation was under control, but there were many interior design submissions in her email. Hearing this, he hurried to finish his shower, eager to see the designs people had sent him.
After finishing his shower, he immediately headed to King's apartment. On his way there, he met the online food delivery service and brought the order, arranging it on the table. Juan didn't feel uneasy at all; he gladly took care of his boss.
King had been in the bathroom for almost an hour. While waiting for his boss to finish his shower, Juyan opened his iPad and checked his emails, moving them into one folder. Many interior designs had come in, but none appealed to him, let alone King. He decided to widen the advertisement to reach more people.
Half an hour later, King finished his shower, wearing only a kimono. He headed to the dining table, and while eating, Juyan displayed several interior design samples. Unexpectedly, he was interested in one of the designs sent by someone named Hera Sagita.
He was surprised by King's choice, finding it tacky. However, unlike King, he liked the design because it had a touch of peach colour-Gladis's favourite colour.
"Contact the designer. I want her to design the entire room for me, and while she's working, I'll relocate to the emergency room," King said. Upon his boss's command, Juyan promptly sent an email confirming the deal to the account owner, Hera Sagita. He also contacted Wina to instruct several office assistants to clean the emergency room for the CEO at Quality Corporation.
Meanwhile, in a modest house, a girl named Hera Sagita, commonly called Hera, was pleasantly surprised when she opened her laptop and found an email reply from Quality Corporation, stating that her interior design had passed the review, and she was expected at Quality Corporation's secretariat office the following day.
Her heart was filled with joy. She had recently graduated from university and had been sending out numerous job applications. She never expected that her casual attempt at designing an office space could lead her to Quality Corporation, one of the giant companies in Jakarta. Hera ran out, carrying her laptop, and headed to her father's room.
Hera's father, suffering from a stroke for the past two years, was able to afford her education thanks to a scholarship from her university. She was one of the brightest students at her university and graduated with honours. This allowed her to graduate earlier than her classmates.
Currently, she lives with her father and stepbrother, Ewan. Hera's biological mother had long passed away, while Ewan's biological mother left their father when she found out that Mr. Tobi had suffered a stroke and couldn't earn money anymore.
To support their lives, Hera sold clothes online while attending university. Together with Ewan, they went shopping at Tanah Abang market every weekend to select clothes to sell online. Ewan acted as a courier for the items and as an online motorcycle taxi driver.
Ewan was currently in his final semester of university. He wasn't Mr. Tobi's biological son, but he chose to live with Mr. Tobi when his mother filed for a divorce from her stepfather. However, his mother had remarried and started a new family.
Hera arrived in her father's room, and she saw her younger brother Ewan feeding their father.
"Dad, look at this," Hera showed her laptop screen to him. Mr. Tobi carefully examined the screen, his eyes widening in surprise when he saw the email from the giant company.
Instantly, he felt happy and proud of Hera, tears streaming down his face as he hugged his beloved daughter. "Congratulations, my dear. I hope this is the beginning of your success," Ewan said enthusiastically, smiling at Hera.
Mr. Tobi used to be a successful entrepreneur, but due to business competition, he was deceived by his business partner. Gradually, their lives changed. When his father remarried, his new wife loved to spend money despite the family's economic hardship. Eventually, Mr. Tobi's debts piled up, and he couldn't pay them off. Consequently, all his wealth was seized by the bank. Additionally, his new wife was caught having an affair with his business partner, which devastated Mr Tobi and led to his stroke.
Her father kept crying.
"Dad, please don't cry like that. I promise I'll always make you happy as long as you have the will to get better. When I start earning, I'll resume your treatment at the hospital," Hera said to her father, and Mr. Tobi nodded in response.
Hera left her father's room with Ewan. "Wan, I want to talk to you," she said. Ewan followed her steps.
.
"Wan, this is your tuition fee. Fortunately, I received a bonus from our customer, so use this to pay for your studies," she said.
"But, sis, this is your money. You also need to think about yourself," Ewan replied.
"We are family, Wan. Families should help each other. Enough, I want to sleep now; it's late. You go to your room too; Dad must be waiting for you," she said.
They parted ways and went into their respective rooms. In the room, Mr. Tobi was already
In the morning, Hera was seen getting off the bus in the Sudirman area of central Jakarta, Indonesia, wearing sporty clothes. She walked confidently with a backpack on her back towards one of the buildings in the central business district.
Upon arriving in the lobby, she headed to the receptionist and inquired about the location of the secretary's office. The receptionist asked for her name and purpose, and Hera answered all the questions.
While waiting for the receptionist to finish a phone call, a sleek black car parked outside caught everyone's attention, including Hera's. A handsome, tall, and charismatic man, the new CEO, stepped out of the vehicle. Everyone was mesmerised, including Hera, who secretly admired his charm. However, she refocused on her purpose in the office.
As King passed by, he didn't spare a glance at her, but everyone else in the room had their eyes on him. "Excuse me, miss?" Hera called the receptionist, who was still awestruck by King's presence. "Oh, yes, sorry, Miss Hera. You're expected to be in Wina's secretary's office. Come, let me escort you there," she said.
Hera followed the receptionist to the elevator and pressed the button. They arrived at their destination floor. The receptionist directed Hera to Wina's secretary's office on the left. Hera followed the instructions and found herself in front of Wina's office.
She knocked on the door, and a voice from inside said, "Come in." She entered the room where Juyan, the bodyguard, and Wina, the secretary, were present. They welcomed Hera and gestured for her to sit.
Juyan explained to Hera that the room she had designed was the CEO's office. Hera opened her laptop and displayed her interior design work. Unsurprisingly, she realised that the CEO's office belonged to a man. She had assumed she was designing a space for a female CEO due to the girly impression of her design.
Suddenly, Hera felt a knot in her stomach and excused herself to the restroom at the back of the large room. After coming out, she intended to return to the office. However, someone called her. "Hey you," Hera glanced in the direction of the voice and was shocked to see the handsome man she had seen in the lobby.
Hera looked around to confirm if someone else was being addressed. "Yes, you, I'm talking to you!" he said firmly. "Me?" Hera was surprised. "Yes, you. Is there anyone else here? No, right?" King snapped angrily.
"You're the office girl, right? Make me coffee, hurry up! And make sure it's perfect, or I'll fire you!" he said, growing angrier.
"But I ..." Hera tried to respond, but King's intimidating words made her nervous. She quickly went to the pantry she had passed on her way to the restroom and made coffee for King. When she finished, the regular office girl, who usually worked in the CEO's office, returned to the pantry. Wina had asked her to buy chicken porridge for her.
Hera handed the coffee to the office girl and explained that the most handsome man in the building had requested it. "She thinks I'm an office girl here," Hera said. "Maybe because you're dressed sporty," the office girl replied. "Could be," Hera thought to herself.
They parted ways in front of King's office. Hera walked away and returned to Wina's office. Meanwhile, in the CEO's office, the office girl placed Hera's coffee on the table per King's order. King didn't glance at her and focused on the reports before him.
He sipped the coffee slowly. "Why does this coffee taste familiar?" He tried to leave his office and find the person who made the coffee, but he couldn't find her.
King recalled his memories; the taste of the coffee he was drinking was just like the one Gladis used to make for him. He was curious about the woman who made the coffee, but he couldn't see Hera's face as she had her back to the CCTV.
Hera returned to discussing the interior design details with Juyan, informing him of the requirements to start designing King's office. Juyan also mentioned that the materials would be ready the next day, and the work was scheduled to begin the following morning.
The next day, Hera returned to the Quality TBK company by city bus. She went straight to the top floor. Following Juyan's previous instructions, several people assisted her in designing King's office.
She stayed up all night to complete the mini apartment design within King's office. Finally, at 4 a.m., she finished her work and immediately sent the design to Juyan's email.
Lunchtime came, and Wina invited Hera to have lunch together. They enjoyed the chicken noodle soup Wina had ordered through an online food delivery service. Suddenly, Juyan appeared at the door, about to enter Wina's office.
"Good afternoon; sorry to disturb your lunch, but I need a moment with you, Miss Hera." Hera immediately stopped eating and followed Juyan out of Wina's office. She followed him into a room.
Juyan asked her to sit, and Hera complied. He displayed Hera's design on a large LED screen in the room and looked at Hera with scrutiny. "Miss Hera, where did you know that Mr King likes the colours peach and brown?" he said. Hera was instantly confused by Juyan's words. She explained that King was the new CEO of Quality TBK, and she had designed the room thinking it was for a female CEO. She insisted that her design was her creation without any external influence. "If Mr. King is not satisfied with my design, you can find someone else to design his office," Hera said, frustrated by the accusation of plagiarism. She opened her laptop and sent a soft copy of her design to Juyan's email. "Please check your email later. Excuse me," she said before leaving.
In another room, King was infuriated by Hera's words. "Such arrogance!" he thought. Secretly, he watched the argument between Juyan and Hera through CCTV, but he couldn't see Hera clearly because she had her back on the camera.
Hera hurriedly left the Quality TBK company and headed to a nearby park, where she started to cry. She realised how difficult it was to gain the trust of others.
Unbeknownst to her, there was someone else in the park: Fred, a young manager working in one of the companies in the business district. "Hello, miss, why are you crying?" he asked, offering his handkerchief to Hera. Hera was surprised and wiped her tears with her fingers. "Use this," Fred pulled Hera's hand and placed his cloth in her palm. Hera wiped her tears again with Fred's handkerchief.
"I won't ask why you're crying, but sometimes shedding tears can make us feel better," he said. "Thank you, sir," Hera replied politely and tried to return the handkerchief to Fred. "Keep it. You might still need it," Hera simply nodded.
"Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Fred," he said, extending his hand to Hera. They introduced themselves,
