AMELIA'S POV
I was excited.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I stepped into the penthouse, my happiness soaring than it had done in weeks. I spent the entire afternoon preparing a very special anniversary dinner for my husband.
One that I hoped would bring back the warmth that had been missing in our marriage. It was finally happening. The good news we needed was finally here.
Realizing that he would be home by now, I smiled to myself as I walked further in, but I suddenly stopped in my tracks as dread crawled over my skin.
There was someone else.
The air was filled with the smell of expensive whiskey and perfume, which definitely wasn't mine or my husband's. I had left the penthouse in an arranged order, making sure everything was perfect for our dinner.
But now... it was a mess.
I glanced up at the sight in front of me and I froze.
Bryan was not alone.
He sat on the leather couch as he stretched out his long legs with a lazy expression on his face. He held a crystal glass filled with whiskey in one hand and his other arm was resting on the back of the couch- no, his hand was resting on the back of a woman.
A stunning lady.
My heart stopped for a moment as I took in the lady's appearance. She was stunning, with her dark hair running all the way to her waist and a red silk dress that clung to her body like it was made for her.
She had a devious smile on her lips and her expression was smug as she gently rubbed her perfect hands on Bryan's arms.
I sucked in a sharp breath as I took a step forward, my head turning with millions of questions. Who was she? Why were they so close? Was I dreaming?
Bryan finally looked up at me as I approached them, and a small, indifferent smile formed on his lips as he stared at me. There was no sign of guilt in his expression, no shock or hesitation. He didn't care that I just caught him with another woman.
It was almost like he had been waiting for my arrival.
"You're home early," He said as he took a sip of the whiskey in his glass and I could literally hear my heart beating in my ears.
"Who is she?" I managed to ask, my voice coming out as a soft whisper and to my surprise, she let out a soft laugh before turning to me.
"Patricia Styles, you may have heard of me." She answered as she crossed her legs slowly and my blood ran cold.
Styles. As in Styles Group?
"You brought another woman into our home? On our anniversary?" I asked as I turned to Bryan, my vision blurring with tears running down my cheeks and he sighed in response before standing up.
"Oh, come on. Let's not do this, Amelia." He said with a lazy stretch and my heart clenched in pain as I took a step forward.
"Do what, Bryan? Ask why my husband is with another woman? Ask why you're acting like I don't exist?" I asked and Patricia scoffed in response.
Bryan didn't answer.
Instead, he pulled out a thick envelope lying on the table and threw it onto my feet. My hands were shaking as I picked up the documents and I could see the smug look on Patricia's face.
"Sign these," He said without any hint of remorse or affection and my heart sank as I read the words on the paper in front of me
Divorce Settlement.
"Bryan... Why?" I managed to ask, my throat tightening in pain as my grip on the documents tightened and he let out a sharp breath like he didn't want to have the conversation.
"We both know this marriage isn't working."
"That's not true. You know it's not-"
"Isn't it? You can't give me what I need, Amelia. I need an heir. I need a wife who can..." His voice trailed off as his eyes held an emotion that resembled disgust.
"A wife who can do what?" I asked as my heart stopped in shock, and he met my eyes without any hesitation written on his face.
"A wife who can bear children."
"You're divorcing me because I haven't given you a child?" I asked in despair as my hands clenched in anger and he ran a hand through his hair, with a look of frustration on his face.
"I don't have time for this conversation."
"So that's it? You're throwing me away because I had miscarriages? Because I lost-" My voice cracked and I bit down on my lip hard, not wanting them to see break.
He didn't care. He just stared at me like a pest in his way.
"I need a family, Amelia. You can't give me that." He replied coldly, and I scoffed before turning to glance at Patricia, who was enjoying the show.
"And Patricia? Is she your new-"
"She can give me what I need."
I should have known. How was I so blind? The way he got cold towards me, his distance, it was all because he had moved on. He left me behind even after promising me the world.
My hands trembled violently as I picked up the divorce papers and scanned through the details. He had thought everything through. He divided the assets and everything about me was out of his life.
He didn't just make this decision.
He had planned this for a long time.
A bitter chuckle escaped my lips as I turned to look at Patricia who stood up to stand beside Bryan. They were a perfect match. Who was I to compare?
I had loved Bryan for years. He reassured me that he didn't care about my status or class. He said he loved me and would never leave me. Were they all empty promises?
"Is this really what you want?" I asked again, my tears were gone and a cold expression graced my face.
"Yes." He said with no hesitation and a bitter laugh tumbled out of my lips. How did I fall in love with such a man anyway? Tossing me away just because I had multiple miscarriages.
I wasn't infertile. I could carry my own babies. But...
AMELIA'S POV
"I hope you regret this, Bryan," I mumbled but he simply stared at me with a blank expression. I took in a deep breath as I straightened my shoulders, gathering whatever dignity that I had left in me.
Whatever had always caused my miscarriages was probably from this house anyway.
"I'll sign them," I said and walked into the bedroom but I didn't miss the amused smile on Patricia's face as she watched me.
Before I could shut the door, I heard a sharp voice from behind me and I froze in my tracks.
"You should leave tonight," Victoria's voice cut through the silence and I instinctively let out a soft chuckle as I realized that it was her long wish after all.
I turned to see her mother-in-law standing by the hallway with her arms crossed and a satisfied look on her face. She had always wanted me out of the way.
She claimed that I had no right to stand by Bryan. Who did she think she was?
"Of course, you're here," I muttered with an amused expression even though I was bubbling with anger from inside.
Victoria stepped forward as she approached me, her expensive heels clicking against the floor with a smug smile on her lips.
"I told you from the beginning, Amelia darling. You weren't fit to be a part of the Montgomery family. You've been thrown out like the wretch you are." She said with a happy expression on her face and my jaw clenched in anger.
"And now you're getting exactly what you wanted. You have every reason to celebrate." I replied with an indifferent expression and she smirked in amusement as she stepped closer to me.
"You should be very grateful. Bryan is being generous. He's allowing you to walk away as quietly as possible." She muttered and I could have sworn I heard something snap within me.
Quietly? He had thrown me out like trash and he was being generous?
"I won't cause a scene if that's what you're worried about," I replied with a cold expression as my grip on the doorknob tightened and she scoffed before nodding in satisfaction.
"Good."
I turned away as I walked into the bedroom with my heart in my throat. My hands were shaking as I grabbed a suitcase and started throwing my clothes in.
This wasn't how it was supposed to end. This wasn't what he had promised me the day he proposed. He swore to stay by my side forever. He swore that he loved me no matter what. Those vows, were they nothing but mere words?
I loved him dearly. Truly, deeply, and foolishly. I dreamt of a life together with him every day. Whenever I got pregnant, I prayed that it lasted because I wanted a family with him.
A future together with him and our child.
But he had stolen that from me.
My hand instinctively moved to rest on my stomach as I bit my lips in despair. He doesn't even know that I'm pregnant again for him.
I was dejected and when I sighted a vase standing by the bed stand, I flung it across the wall. I didn't care anymore. I didn't matter anymore anyway. I grabbed the next one and threw it again, the shattering sound making me feel at ease.
Tears burned my eyes, but I forced myself to swallow them down as I looked at the room that was once ours. Knowing that he would sleep on it with Patricia made my chest tighten.
"You will not cry for him. Not anymore." I mumbled to myself but froze when I heard someone's voice.
"Aww, cute," Patricia said as she stood by the door and watched me with a smile on her face.
I didn't acknowledge her presence as I zipped up her suitcase and placed the divorce documents on the table. My heart was cold the moment I signed the documents and placed the pen on top of the paper.
Finally.
"You know, Bryan and I have been-"
"I don't care, Patricia." I cut her off as I grabbed my suitcase but she immediately stepped in front of me with a smile.
"Oh, but I do. And I wanna tell you. So you will listen. Bryan and I have been... you know, going at it for a while now, and guess what? I'm pregnant!" She said with a giggle and all I wanted to do was slam the suitcase on her head.
She was intentionally rubbing salts on my wound but I won't let her get to me.
"Congratulations. A cheat and a slut? What a perfect combination." I muttered and the moment her face twisted, I smiled in victory. She was a fool to think I would cry because of that.
Before she could speak, I took out the wedding ring from my finger, set it on the table with the papers, and then shoved her aside as I walked out of the room.
I walked out of the house without glancing back. I didn't want to see his face every day again. Not after this betrayal. And I would make sure he regretted this decision of his.
I didn't care how, I didn't know how. But I would make him pay for throwing me out like trash. Walking out of the house, I felt more free than ever. I would raise this child on my own and give it a good life.
Without him.
I headed down the road as I decided to start a new chapter of my life. I saw a car driving towards me at speed, so I moved to the other end, but to my surprise, it followed after me.
Whoever was in that car was after me. There was no place to run to or hide. I abandoned my suitcase and started to run but who was I against a speeding car?
One moment, I was running. The next moment, I was hit by the car as I slammed to the ground, my hand moving to protect my stomach in desperation.
Then something was placed over my head and everything went black.
AMELIA'S POV
I stood in front of the large window in my office as I stared out at the breathtaking view of Los Angeles. The pretty cloudy sky stretched out before me and I smiled when I realized how far I had come.
Seven years.
It's been seven years since Bryan Montgomery tossed me aside like I was nothing. Seven years since I walked out of that penthouse with my heart shattered in pieces. Seven years since I got kidnapped and almost got killed.
Seven years since I vowed never to let a man have that kind of power over me again.
And now?
Now, I am one of the most powerful women in the business world.
I chuckled softly when I remembered what had happened that day. The Montgomery family must have seen me as a pest who needed to be gotten rid of so they sent men to get rid of me. However, someone had saved me instead.
He offered to help me rebuild my life if I could act as his pretend girlfriend for three years. Things had gone as planned and he took me with him abroad.
Using the opportunity, I started a small, simple consulting firm, but my business strategies and sharp skills had turned it into a multi-million-dollar empire.
My company, which was one of the biggest companies in the United States, Carter Enterprises, had risen from nothing. It was built with my willpower, intelligence, sleepless nights, and dedication to be better than I was seven years ago.
And I had done it all without Bryan Montgomery. It gave me the best thrill of my life. I didn't expect to see him again but I hoped that he could see me now. To see that I was no longer the weak Amelia he tossed away.
My phone suddenly buzzed and it pulled me out of my thoughts. I turned away from the window as I grabbed it to see that it was a text from Sophia.
The text message read: "Limo's downstairs. The gala starts in an hour. And don't even THINK about ditching it or running away. I would kick your ass."
I rolled my eyes in feigned annoyance as a small smile formed on my lips. I had met Sophie when I moved abroad and she had been my rock through all the madness I went through. She was my best friend, business partner, and my occasional therapist.
"I'll be down in ten minutes," I replied quickly before sending a winky emoji with the text as I turned to check my reflection in the mirror.
The black evening gown hugged my curves perfectly and the high slit exposed just enough skin to call for attention to me.
I brushed my long dark hair with my hands as they moved with the wind in waves, and the diamond earrings on my ears which were my own designs, sparkled under the light.
I took a look at the woman staring in front of me and the only thing that exuded from me was:
Power. Success. Independence.
I had successfully rebuilt myself into a woman that no one could try to destroy. And tonight, I would walk into that gala and remind the world who exactly I was.
********
The moment I stepped into the grand ballroom, I could see heads turning in my presence. The venue was packed with the rich, classy, and wealthy. There were business gurus, celebrities, and politicians.
It felt so good to be stared at in admiration, not in contempt. I felt like a force that no one could take down.
"You look like a billion dollars," Sophie said with a smirk as she walked in with me and I grinned at her, the compliment making my head spin.
"Good. Because that's what I'm worth." I replied with a wink and she laughed in response as she punched my shoulder gently.
"That's the spirit, baby girl." She chuckled in response as we made our way through the crowd and exchanged pleasantries with rich investors.
The best thing about today was that I had just secured and signed a major deal with a European technology firm, and tonight was all about celebrating my success.
I smiled sweetly at everyone who approached me, but I was getting bored of the constant work talks, so I excused myself and headed for the bar.
"A glass of champagne, please," I said to the bartender and he nodded before placing a glass on the table. However, the moment I reached for the glass, I froze.
I could feel someone watching me. I could feel his eyes boring holes into my back and it felt familiar. It was too damn familiar.
I took a sip of my champagne as I turned slowly and just as I thought, it was him. He stood there with his eyes fixed on me like a predator after his prey.
Bryan Montgomery.
He stood tall as always, looking all-powerful and devastatingly handsome in his tailored black suit. My breath hitched for a second but I forced that feeling back into the box.
I raised a brow at him with an unreadable expression and his piercing blue eyes locked onto mine like he couldn't tear his eyes off me.
I could have sworn that I saw something like regret flicker through his eyes as he stared at me but it was too late for any of that. I don't care what he feels, I don't even care about him.
"Hey, baby girl." I heard someone call me from behind and I turned to look at the man standing behind me with a smile on his face.
Ethan Blake.
He was the one who saved me that night. He gave me a chance to prove myself. He was the man who had been there when Bryan had destroyed me. The man who had stood by my side even when she was pregnant and alone.
His hand slipped through my waist, and a small smirk danced on my lips, and I could see Bryan's jaw clenching in anger. He suddenly started to walk towards us and I froze in place.
Ethan noticed my nervousness so before Bryan could make it to my side, he suddenly pulled me closer and kissed me softly.
