Chapter 1 THE UNLIKELY MEETING

Anna Williams had always believed her life was predictable, like the steady ticking of the old clock in her father's study. Wake up. Go to work. Rush back home to check on her sick father. Repeat. Nothing extraordinary ever happened to her-at least, not until the day she collided head-on with Alexander Knight, the man whose name alone sent shivers through the business world.

The morning had started with chaos.

"Anna, the hospital bills are piling up again," her aunt sighed, voice weary as she folded another notice in her trembling hands. The papers scattered across the worn wooden table, each line of bold black print screaming one truth-her father's treatments were bleeding them dry.

Anna swallowed the lump in her throat. She worked two jobs, barely slept, and still, the money wasn't enough. Her father, once a proud architect, now lay weak and pale in a hospital bed, while she carried the weight of saving him.

"I'll find a way," Anna whispered, though her own voice trembled. She forced a smile for her aunt, grabbed her worn blazer, and stepped out into the city's biting morning air.

The subway was packed, her cheap heels pinching as she maneuvered through crowds. She clutched her portfolio-filled with résumés she'd been handing out endlessly-to her chest. Today, she had an interview at Knight Enterprises, one of the most powerful conglomerates in the country.

She hadn't expected much. Thousands wanted a job there, but she was desperate.

By the time Anna pushed through the revolving doors of the glass skyscraper, her nerves were in tatters. The building was intimidating, a gleaming fortress that screamed wealth and authority. Employees strode past in sleek suits, their polished shoes clicking against marble floors.

"Interviewees, sign here," a receptionist said, handing her a clipboard.

Anna signed, sat, and rehearsed answers in her head. She barely noticed when the elevator doors opened, or when the atmosphere shifted-voices dropping, whispers spreading like wildfire.

Then she saw him.

Alexander Knight.

He didn't walk into the lobby-he commanded it. Tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in an impeccably tailored black suit, he exuded cold authority. His expression was unreadable, jaw set like stone, and his dark eyes scanned the room with the sharpness of a blade.

People straightened in their seats, employees scrambled to greet him, but Alexander ignored them all, heading straight for the elevators. His presence was suffocating, magnetic in a way that made Anna's breath hitch.

She told herself to look away. She didn't belong in his world. But fate, cruel as always, had other plans.

As she stood to adjust her portfolio, someone bumped into her, sending her papers flying across the floor.

"No, no, no..." Anna scrambled, kneeling to gather the scattered sheets. One page skidded across the polished marble-straight to Alexander's feet.

He stopped.

For a moment, silence filled the lobby. Anna froze, mortified, as his gaze dropped to the paper. Slowly, he bent, picked it up, and glanced at the résumé in his hand.

His dark brows furrowed. Then his eyes lifted, pinning her in place.

Anna's breath caught. His stare was intense, like he could see through her, stripping her bare of every secret, every fear.

"You dropped this," his voice was low, smooth, but carried the weight of authority. He extended the paper toward her.

"Th-thank you," she stammered, taking it back with trembling fingers.

Alexander's gaze lingered a second longer, unreadable, before he turned away and entered the elevator. The doors closed, cutting off the moment, leaving Anna's heart racing.

She exhaled shakily, cheeks burning.

"Who was that?" she whispered to herself, though she already knew.

Alexander Knight-the CEO. The man rumored to be ruthless, cold-hearted, untouchable. The kind of man who destroyed rivals without flinching and never let anyone close.

The kind of man she had no business crossing paths with.

Yet somehow, she had.

---

The interview itself was a blur. Anna did her best, answering questions politely, showcasing her skills, but her mind kept drifting back to that piercing gaze. When it ended, she left the building with little hope. She wasn't the type they hired-too ordinary, too... expendable.

But fate wasn't done with her.

That evening, while rushing home through the pouring rain, Anna ducked under the awning of a luxury hotel to catch her breath. She was drenched, her clothes clinging to her skin, her portfolio soaked despite her efforts to shield it.

"Just my luck," she muttered, wringing out her sleeve.

The hotel doors slid open. A group of wealthy men exited, their laughter loud, their cigars leaving a trail of smoke. And among them-Alexander Knight.

Anna's heart stuttered. Twice in one day? Impossible.

He noticed her immediately. His eyes flicked over her, taking in her soaked clothes, the ruined papers clutched to her chest. For a heartbeat, something unreadable crossed his face-curiosity, maybe, or recognition.

Their eyes locked again, and Anna felt that same suffocating pull, like he was gravity itself.

One of the men with him smirked. "Another stray, Knight? Should I call security?"

Alexander didn't answer right away. He simply stepped forward, stopping just inches away from Anna. The rain pounded around them, but he stood untouched, perfectly composed.

Anna's pulse hammered. She wanted to step back, but couldn't move.

Finally, he spoke. "You're persistent."

She blinked. "E-excuse me?"

"You were in my building this morning," he said coolly. "And now here you are again." His gaze flicked to her ruined portfolio. "Still chasing opportunities?"

Heat rushed to her cheeks. "I-I wasn't following you. This is just coincidence."

His lips curved slightly-not quite a smile, more like a dangerous smirk. "I don't believe in coincidences."

Before Anna could respond, Alexander reached into his pocket, pulled out a sleek black card, and held it out.

"Come to my office tomorrow. Ten a.m. Sharp."

Anna stared at the card, stunned. "Why?"

His eyes darkened. "Because I don't waste my time. And you... are either a distraction I should remove, or something else entirely."

Then, without waiting for her reply, Alexander turned and walked away, disappearing into the night with his entourage.

Anna clutched the card to her chest, heart pounding, mind spinning.

What had just happened?

And why, out of all people, had Alexander Knight-the untouchable CEO-noticed her?

One thing was certain. Her life would never be predictable again.

Chapter 2 EYES OF STEEL

Anna barely slept that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him-the towering figure in that rain-slicked street, the dark eyes that had stripped her bare, the business card burning like a brand in her palm. She lay awake in her small apartment, staring at the ceiling, questions spinning endlessly.

Why had Alexander Knight singled her out? Was this an opportunity... or a trap?

By morning, her doubts still clawed at her, but the card sat on her nightstand, gleaming like a dare. Ten a.m. sharp, he had said. The problem was, people like him didn't waste words. If she didn't show up, she might regret it for the rest of her life.

And if she did?

Anna shoved the thought aside as she pulled on her best outfit-an old navy skirt, a white blouse that was one wash away from thinning, and the same heels that had given her blisters yesterday. She smoothed her hair, dabbed on a hint of lip gloss, and told herself she could do this.

"You've faced worse," she whispered in the mirror, trying to ignore the way her stomach twisted.

---

The skyscraper loomed even larger today, its mirrored surface catching the sun like a blade. Anna stepped into the lobby, where the receptionist gave her a curious look before directing her to the top floor.

"The CEO's office?" the woman asked, arching a brow. "He doesn't... usually see people without an appointment."

Anna clutched the black card in her hand. "He asked me to come."

That earned her a double take, but the receptionist said nothing more, only pressed the button for the private elevator.

The ride was suffocating. Each floor that ticked by tightened the knot in her chest. By the time the doors slid open with a soft chime, Anna's palms were slick with sweat.

The top floor was another world. Polished marble floors stretched beneath golden light. Tall windows framed the skyline, a breathtaking view of the city sprawling endlessly below. Assistants moved briskly between glass-walled offices, all sharp suits and sharper expressions.

And at the far end, double doors stood like the gates of a fortress.

"Mr. Knight is expecting you," a tall assistant said, his expression unreadable as he ushered her forward.

Anna's legs felt like lead as she pushed open the doors.

---

The office was vast, sleek, and utterly intimidating. Floor-to-ceiling windows let sunlight pour across a desk of black glass, where Alexander Knight sat like a king on his throne. He was on the phone, his deep voice low and commanding, eyes fixed on documents spread across his desk.

For a moment, he didn't acknowledge her. Anna stood frozen in the doorway, clutching her bag like a shield, painfully aware of how small she looked in this space.

Then his eyes lifted.

Steel. Cold, piercing steel.

The same eyes from last night, locking onto hers with lethal precision.

He ended his call with a curt word, set the phone down, and leaned back in his chair. "You came."

His tone was matter-of-fact, as though he hadn't doubted it for a second.

Anna forced herself to nod. "You told me to."

His lips twitched-not a smile, but something close. "So you follow orders well. That's useful."

"I'm not here to follow orders," she blurted before she could stop herself.

A dangerous silence followed. Alexander arched one dark brow, and Anna's heart plummeted. What was she doing, snapping at a man like him?

Instead of anger, though, amusement flickered in his gaze. "Interesting."

He stood, and the motion was fluid, predatory. Tall, broad, every inch of him radiated authority as he circled the desk and came to stand just a foot away. Anna had to tilt her head back to meet his eyes.

"You want a job," he said. It wasn't a question.

"Yes," she admitted.

"Why?"

"My father is sick. I need the money." The words slipped out before she could dress them in pride or excuses.

For a fleeting moment, something unreadable passed through his expression. Then it was gone, replaced by cool detachment.

"There are easier ways to make money than working under me," Alexander said, his tone sharp as a blade. "Do you understand what kind of man I am, Miss Williams?"

Her mouth went dry. She'd heard the stories-ruthless, merciless, a man who built empires by crushing anything in his path. But standing here, under his gaze, she realized the rumors were only half the truth. The danger wasn't just in his power. It was in his presence, the way he pulled her in even as he warned her away.

"I... I think so," she managed.

He stepped closer, invading her space until she could feel the heat radiating off him. His cologne was subtle, clean, but intoxicating.

"Then tell me," Alexander murmured, eyes boring into hers. "Why should I waste my time on you?"

Anna's pulse hammered. Her mind screamed to look away, but she forced herself to hold his gaze. "Because I won't break as easily as you think."

The silence that followed was suffocating. Then, slowly, a smirk curved his lips. Dangerous. Intrigued.

"Bold," he said softly. "Very bold."

Before Anna could catch her breath, he turned, striding back behind his desk. He picked up a file, flipped it open, and scanned it with practiced ease.

"Fine. You'll work here. Starting today."

Anna blinked. "What? Just like that?"

His gaze lifted again, sharp and unyielding. "Do you want the job or not?"

"Yes, but-"

"Then don't waste my time with questions. My assistant will handle the paperwork."

It wasn't kindness. It wasn't generosity. It was a command, as though he were testing her resolve.

Anna swallowed hard. "All right."

"Good." Alexander's voice dropped lower, dangerous. "But remember this, Miss Williams."

He leaned forward, eyes narrowing.

"In my world, loyalty is everything. Betray me, cross me, or even hesitate at the wrong moment... and you'll regret ever stepping into this office."

Anna's chest tightened, fear and determination warring inside her. She had just stepped into the lion's den, and Alexander Knight was the lion himself.

And whether she liked it or not, she had just become his prey.

Chapter 3 THE JOB OFFER

Anna's first official day at Knight Enterprises felt like walking into enemy territory.

She had spent most of the night staring at the ceiling, turning over every word Alexander Knight had said to her. His warning-loyalty is everything-still echoed in her head, chilling and commanding all at once.

But she had no choice. Her father's hospital bills didn't care if her boss was the devil himself.

The elevator dinged, releasing her onto the executive floor. This time, she carried no résumé or portfolio-only her nerves and a determination she prayed wouldn't falter.

"Miss Williams?"

Anna turned to find a tall woman with sharp cheekbones and an even sharper suit waiting by the reception desk. She looked every inch the power executive-glasses perched on her nose, tablet in hand, heels clicking with precision.

"I'm Claire Matthews, Mr. Knight's executive assistant," she said briskly. "He asked me to orient you."

"Thank you," Anna replied, trying not to sound as nervous as she felt.

Claire gave her a once-over, eyes narrowing slightly, as though measuring and already finding her lacking. "You'll be working under me directly. But understand-anything you do reflects on Mr. Knight. That means one mistake could cost you more than your job."

The words weren't a warning. They were a knife, delivered with practiced indifference.

Anna straightened her shoulders. "I'll do my best."

Claire's lips curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "We'll see."

---

Her desk was placed just outside Alexander's office, separated by a glass wall. It was modern, sleek, and painfully exposed. Every time she looked up, she could see his silhouette inside-head bent over files, speaking into the phone, or simply staring out the window with a presence that seemed to command the very skyline.

The work itself was demanding. Scheduling meetings, sorting through endless contracts, answering calls that never stopped ringing. Claire's instructions came rapid-fire, and Anna had to fight to keep up.

But every so often, she felt it-his gaze.

Through the glass, Alexander's eyes would lift, pinning her in place. Not for long. Just a flicker, a heartbeat too long. Enough to leave her unsettled.

She told herself it was her imagination. But it wasn't. He was watching her. Measuring her. Testing her.

And she had no idea why.

---

At noon, Claire appeared at her desk. "Mr. Knight wants to see you."

Anna's heart skipped. She smoothed her blouse, forced her legs to move, and stepped into his office.

Alexander was at his desk, sleeves rolled up, tie loosened. Even in a moment of disarray, he looked every inch the untouchable CEO-controlled, powerful, devastatingly composed.

"Sit," he said without looking up.

Anna obeyed, perching on the edge of the leather chair across from him.

He finally looked at her, eyes sharp as ever. "How was your first morning?"

"Busy," she admitted. "But manageable."

His lips curved faintly. "Most people don't survive their first week here. You lasted four hours without quitting. Impressive."

"I'm not most people," she said before she could stop herself.

His gaze darkened, amused. "I've noticed."

The silence stretched, thick and charged. Anna shifted under his stare, trying to find her voice. "Mr. Knight... why me? You don't even know me, and yet you-"

"Wrong." His interruption was swift, cutting. "I make it a point to know everything about the people I allow into my company."

Anna blinked. "You... investigated me?"

"Background checks are standard. But you..." He leaned back, folding his arms. "You're different. You're desperate, but not broken. Bold, but not reckless. You intrigue me."

Her cheeks warmed. "I didn't ask to intrigue you."

"No," he said softly, eyes never leaving hers. "But you do."

Her pulse spiked. She shifted in her seat, clinging to composure. "If this is some sort of test, I'd rather know what's expected of me."

His gaze sharpened. "Loyalty. Competence. And discretion." He tapped his desk lightly, each word weighted. "Do those three things, and you'll be rewarded beyond anything you've dreamed. Fail... and you'll regret ever stepping into my office."

The words should have terrified her. And they did. But beneath the fear was something else-an undeniable pull, like standing too close to a flame.

Anna cleared her throat. "Understood."

"Good." His voice softened, dangerously smooth. "Now, I have a proposition for you."

Her breath caught. "What kind of proposition?"

The corner of his mouth lifted, just slightly. "One that goes beyond a simple job. But for now..." He stood, towering over her, his shadow falling across her. "Prove to me I didn't make a mistake. Show me you belong here."

Anna stood too, forcing herself not to step back even as her pulse raced. "I will."

Their eyes locked, steel against fire, neither willing to yield.

For the first time in her life, Anna realized this wasn't just about survival anymore.

It was about a game.

And Alexander Knight was daring her to play.
