Chapter 1 1

The relentless hum of the city pulsed through the tinted windows of the black limousine as it cut through Manhattan's traffic. Inside, Adrian Steele sat in the backseat, one hand gripping his phone, the other tapping impatiently against the leather armrest. His steel-gray eyes were locked on the financial reports displayed on his screen, but his mind was elsewhere.

"She starts today?" His voice was smooth, authoritative.

"Yes, sir. Tessa Maddox should be arriving at your office within the hour," his assistant, Elijah, replied from the front seat.

Adrian's jaw tightened. He hated change, especially when it came to his staff. His last assistant had been efficient-until she made the mistake of trying to seduce him, thinking she could charm her way into his life. He had no patience for workplace entanglements. He needed competence, not complications.

"Background check came back clean?"

"Yes. She has an impressive record in the nonprofit sector, but after a... well, let's just say, an unfortunate situation, she's decided to transition into the corporate world. Overqualified for the role, honestly."

Adrian smirked. "Overqualified? That's never stopped anyone from wanting a paycheck."

Elijah hesitated. "There's more to it than that, sir. She was one of the best social workers in the city. Had a reputation for fighting the system, advocating for families others wouldn't touch. Then, suddenly, she resigned."

Adrian wasn't interested in sob stories. "As long as she does her job, I don't care why she left."

Elijah nodded but said nothing else.

Minutes later, the limousine pulled up in front of Steele Enterprises-a sleek, towering skyscraper of steel and glass that loomed over Fifth Avenue. Adrian stepped out, buttoning his charcoal suit jacket as he strode inside. Employees parted like the Red Sea as he walked through the lobby, his presence commanding attention without a word. He didn't need to speak-his reputation spoke for him.

By the time he stepped into his private elevator, his mind had already moved on. Another day. Another battle. Another deal to win.

Tessa Maddox stood in front of the massive glass doors of Steele Enterprises, gripping the strap of her purse a little too tightly. This wasn't her world. The towering building, the perfectly dressed executives brushing past her, the cold efficiency of it all-it was the complete opposite of the life she'd known.

But she didn't have the luxury of hesitation. Not anymore.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped inside, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor. A receptionist glanced up from behind a sleek white desk, offering a polite but detached smile.

"Name?"

"Tessa Maddox. I'm the new executive assistant."

The woman's expression flickered for a fraction of a second-something between curiosity and pity-but it was gone so fast, Tessa almost thought she imagined it.

"Mr. Steele is expecting you. Take the elevator to the top floor."

Tessa nodded and walked toward the elevator, her heart pounding harder than she wanted to admit. This job wasn't her dream, but it was necessary. After what had happened... she needed a fresh start.

She stepped inside the private elevator, the doors sliding shut with a whisper. As the numbers climbed higher, she inhaled deeply, straightened her shoulders, and reminded herself-this was just a job.

Then why did it feel like she was walking straight into the lion's den?

When she entered the top-floor office, she barely had time to take in her surroundings before a deep, commanding voice cut through the silence.

"You're late."

Tessa's head snapped toward the source of the voice.

Adrian Steele.

He sat behind an enormous black desk, the skyline stretching behind him like a throne room view. Dark-haired, sharp-jawed, with piercing gray eyes that pinned her in place. He exuded power-not just in the way he looked, but in the way he carried himself. As if the world itself bowed at his feet.

She swallowed. "Actually, I'm five minutes early."

His brow arched, a slow, calculating expression. "Interesting. Most people in your position wouldn't dare correct me."

Tessa lifted her chin. "Most people aren't me."

A flicker of something passed through his eyes-amusement? Annoyance? She couldn't tell.

Adrian leaned back in his chair, folding his hands. "Tessa Maddox. Former social worker. No corporate experience. Yet here you are."

She clasped her hands behind her back, keeping her posture firm. "I learn fast."

"We'll see." He gestured toward the chair in front of his desk. "Sit."

Tessa hesitated a fraction of a second before obeying. The chair was ridiculously comfortable, but she refused to relax.

"Your job is simple," Adrian continued, watching her with an intensity that made her pulse skip. "You'll handle my schedule, manage my communications, and ensure everything runs smoothly. No mistakes. No excuses."

Tessa met his gaze head-on. "Understood."

His lips curled, but it wasn't quite a smile. "You're bold. That's either going to serve you well or get you fired within a week."

"Guess we'll find out."

For a moment, silence stretched between them. The air felt charged, crackling with something she couldn't name. Then, Adrian exhaled sharply, as if dismissing whatever had just passed between them.

"Report to Elijah for onboarding. We'll see if you're worth keeping."

Dismissed already.

Tessa stood, smoothing her skirt. She had barely taken two steps when his voice stopped her.

"One more thing, Ms. Maddox."

She turned.

His gaze was darker now, unreadable. "I don't mix business with pleasure. Keep that in mind."

Her stomach tightened, but she forced a smirk. "Good. Neither do I."

A slow, deliberate smile spread across his face, and for the first time, she realized something-

She may have just started working for Adrian Steele, but she had already stepped into a game she wasn't sure she knew how to play.

Chapter 2 2

The moment Tessa stepped out of Adrian Steele's office, she released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Her pulse still pounded in her ears, and her palms were damp despite the controlled confidence she'd maintained in front of him.

What the hell had just happened in there?

Adrian Steele was intimidating, that much she had expected. But what she hadn't anticipated was the way his presence filled every inch of the room, how his gaze alone could strip a person down to their most vulnerable parts. He had looked at her like a puzzle he was already halfway to solving, and she wasn't sure she liked that.

"Ms. Maddox?"

Tessa turned sharply to find a tall, sharply dressed man standing a few feet away. Mid-forties, glasses, an air of efficiency about him-this had to be Elijah.

"Mr. Steele said you'd be assisting me with onboarding," she said, smoothing the front of her blouse to mask the slight tremor in her fingers.

Elijah nodded, his expression unreadable. "Follow me."

Tessa trailed after him, taking in her surroundings as they walked through the expansive top floor. Everything about Steele Enterprises screamed wealth and precision. The glass walls, the state-of-the-art technology, the carefully chosen art pieces that probably cost more than her yearly salary at her old job-it was a world so different from the cramped social work offices she had been used to.

She had spent her career trying to fix broken things, fighting against a system that rarely cared. Here, nothing seemed broken. Everything was controlled. Calculated.

And at the center of it all was Adrian Steele.

"Here's your workspace," Elijah said, stopping at a sleek, minimalist desk just outside Adrian's office. "As his executive assistant, you'll be handling everything from his meetings to his travel arrangements. He doesn't like incompetence, nor does he tolerate disobedience."

Tessa lifted a brow. "He made that abundantly clear."

Elijah smirked, though it was brief. "Good. Then you're already ahead of most."

He handed her a company tablet and a thick binder. "These contain Steele Enterprises' protocols, including how Mr. Steele prefers his schedule managed. Read them. Memorize them."

Tessa took the materials, flipping open the binder. "Anything else I should know?"

Elijah studied her for a moment. "Yes. Don't make the mistake of thinking Mr. Steele is like other men you've worked for."

A strange warning.

"Meaning?"

A glint of something unreadable flickered in Elijah's eyes. "You'll figure it out soon enough."

Before she could ask him to clarify, he checked his watch. "You'll be shadowing me for the rest of the day. We have back-to-back meetings, and Mr. Steele doesn't like delays."

"Noted."

Elijah gave a small nod before leading her toward the conference room.

Tessa squared her shoulders and followed.

She didn't care how powerful Adrian Steele was. She had survived far worse than a demanding boss.

She could handle this job.

What she wasn't sure she could handle was the way his presence made her pulse race in a way it never should.

Adrian sat at the head of the conference table, watching as Tessa entered the room with Elijah. He didn't like surprises, and she had already proven to be one.

She was different from the assistants who had come before her. Most people in her position were eager to please, afraid to challenge him. But Tessa Maddox? She had walked into his office, looked him straight in the eye, and held her ground.

Interesting.

"Mr. Steele, the presentation is ready," one of the executives announced, pulling his attention back to the meeting.

Adrian nodded, leaning back in his chair as the discussion began. But even as the numbers and projections were laid out in front of him, a part of his mind remained on the woman sitting quietly beside Elijah.

He didn't mix business with pleasure.

And Tessa Maddox was already starting to feel like a very dangerous distraction.

Chapter 3 3

The meeting droned on, but Adrian found it harder to focus on the figures and projections as they passed around the table. His thoughts kept drifting back to Tessa. She sat quietly beside Elijah, scribbling notes in that pristine, professional way that made her seem calm and composed-almost too composed, considering the nature of this world. She had already proven to be sharp, quick-witted, and unafraid to speak her mind.

But that had been in his office. Here, in the boardroom, she seemed small and out of place, like a delicate bird among vultures. She didn't belong in this room, at least not yet.

And yet, the pull of her was undeniable. Adrian hated that.

His gaze flicked over to her once again, her eyes focused on the screen in front of her, but there was an edge of something in her posture. Not fear, exactly, but wariness. A protective wall she'd built up around herself, and no doubt it had been necessary in her line of work. She didn't want to be here, in this cold, corporate machine. She was used to a different kind of fight.

Adrian smirked to himself, wondering how long that wall would hold.

He leaned forward, interrupting the flow of the meeting. "Let's wrap this up. We have a deadline to meet, and I don't like wasting time."

The executives quickly nodded, shuffling their papers and wrapping up the discussion. When the room finally emptied out, Adrian stayed in his seat, the sound of his fingers drumming lightly on the polished surface of the table filling the silence.

Tessa stood up, preparing to leave, but Adrian's voice stopped her.

"Tessa, a word."

Her gaze flicked to him, then to Elijah, before she slowly moved back toward the table. There was something in the way she walked-graceful, but guarded.

He leaned back in his chair, eyes assessing her. "You've been quiet during the meeting. I trust that's not because you're overwhelmed?"

Tessa didn't flinch at the question. "No. I'm just... taking it all in."

"Good." His tone was sharp. "But you'll need to be more than an observer. I expect results, not just note-taking."

Her eyes met his, her expression unreadable. "I'm not just here to take notes, Mr. Steele."

A slight smile tugged at the corners of Adrian's mouth. "Prove it."

Tessa tilted her head, as if considering his challenge. "I don't take kindly to being pushed too hard, Mr. Steele."

Adrian's smile deepened. "I'm sure you don't. But I'm not here to coddle you."

Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly, the tension thick between them. He couldn't remember the last time anyone had dared to stand up to him in such a manner-let alone so quickly. He liked that.

"Let's see if you can keep up."

With that, he turned back to the papers on the table, dismissing her. But as Tessa turned to leave, he caught the slightest shift in her posture. There was a flicker of something in her eyes, a challenge returned.

As she walked out of the room, Adrian's gaze followed her, the intrigue growing with each passing second.

Tessa Maddox was different.

But he couldn't decide if that was a good thing or a very dangerous one.

Later that evening, as Adrian stood on the balcony of his penthouse, overlooking the glittering lights of the city, he found himself lost in thought. The world below seemed so far removed from his own. Detached.

His phone buzzed in his pocket, and when he glanced at the screen, his mood darkened.

Bianca Castello.

The ruthless investor who had been trying to take him down for months now.

He swiped the screen, accepting the call.

"Adrian," her voice purred through the phone, smooth like velvet but with a venomous undertone. "I trust you're still paying attention to the bigger picture. Your little empire won't last long if you keep ignoring me."

Adrian's jaw tightened, but his voice remained calm. "I'm not ignoring you, Bianca. I'm just not afraid of you."

A soft laugh echoed in his ear. "Oh, I know. But you should be. And so should your new assistant, Tessa Maddox. She doesn't know it yet, but she's already a pawn in my game."

Adrian's fingers curled into a fist around the railing, but he kept his tone even. "You're wasting your time. Tessa Maddox is not part of your plans."

Bianca's voice dropped lower, almost a whisper. "We'll see about that. She's already in over her head, Adrian. It's just a matter of time before she realizes it."

Before he could respond, she hung up.

Adrian stared at the phone in his hand, his mind racing. Bianca Castello was dangerous, and her words never carried any hint of falsehood. But Tessa? She was a complication he hadn't asked for-and yet, he was inexplicably drawn to her.

She wasn't a pawn. She wasn't anything Bianca could control.

But the longer she stayed in his world, the more he wondered just how much damage she could cause.

The next day, Adrian arrived at the office early, his mind still heavy with the previous night's call. He needed to focus. He needed to keep his empire safe, to block out the distractions. And yet, his mind kept returning to Tessa.

As he stepped off the elevator, he was met by her.

She was standing by his office door, her head bent as she scanned through some documents. She looked focused, almost determined, but there was an underlying tension in her posture.

"Ms. Maddox," Adrian said, his voice smooth but with a touch of amusement.

Tessa looked up, her eyes meeting his with an almost defiant spark. "Mr. Steele," she replied, her voice steady.

"Ready for another day?" he asked, stepping closer.

Her gaze flickered for a split second, a slight shift of unease crossing her features before she caught herself. "Always."

Adrian studied her, his expression unreadable. There was something there, a battle she was fighting within herself. A hesitation.

But he couldn't figure out what it was.

Not yet.
