Aria's POV
My name is Aria. Once, I was the Silvermoon Alpha's daughter. Now, I'm nothing but an Omega treated like a slave.
Silvermoon fell seven years ago. That night I stood there helpless, watching my people cut down around me, the blood running in rivers. It broke something in me so completely that I never finished my shift, not even by eighteen.
The Moon Goddess didn't abandon me. I met Damon, the powerful, handsome Alpha of the Blackmoon Pack. He saved me and claimed me as his Luna. I should have been cherished.
But four years have passed, and every time I step into the pack's main house, the only things waiting for me are dirty water and insults, each one hitting me like a bullet. After four years I've earned myself another title: the Barren Luna.
The pack even whispers that maybe my parents' pack fell because I'm cursed. After that, the cruelty only got worse. They started using their fists on me.
The only reason I've endured any of it is my mate. Damon.
He works himself to the bone, hell-bent on making the Blackmoon Pack the strongest in the alliance, stronger even than the Bloodmoon Pack, his best friend's pack. The Alpha of Bloodmoon, Ronan Thorne, has been Damon's closest friend since they were boys. He's gorgeous, no she-wolf in the alliance would deny that. But he hates me. Ever since Damon's mark appeared on my neck, every time he comes to the manor he looks at me like I'm a mistake.
It doesn't matter. I'll have nothing to do with him. Damon is my mate. That's all.
A powerful, ambitious Alpha choosing a mate with no wolf in her, he must have caught hell for it on my account. I couldn't be a burden to him too. All I could do was keep my head down, keep him from being distracted, never let on what I went through in this pack.
And he was tender with me. Every time he came home after his Alpha duties, he'd kiss me, sometimes bringing flowers or my favorite dessert. In an instant, all the pain and resentment would melt away. But the fear that I'd never get pregnant haunted me like a ghost.
I was certain it wasn't my fault. The truth was, Damon and I had never slept together. He said I was too precious, that he wanted to wait until the pack climbed to first place before he made love to me. He said I deserved better. I believed that day was close.
I bet that the moment I bore Damon a pup, the whole pack would respect me again, even the ones who hated me most: his parents. The former Alpha and Luna.
"All right! Before that day comes, I need to focus on the floor under my feet," I told myself, trying to rally.
I dropped to my knees and rubbed my aching lower back.
I'd been scrubbing the floor for three hours. The living room of the Alpha's manor was enormous, but Damon's mother, Donna, had ordered that no one lift a finger to help me. The air in the room was hot and stifling, sweat beading on my forehead, the shirt on my back soaked through and clinging to my skin. I felt like I'd pass out from the heat at any second, but even falling sick wouldn't buy me a rest. I forced myself to keep going.
I had to finish the last three sections of floor as fast as I could, then get dinner ready for the pack. Damon had been working for the pack all day; he had to be starving.
I plunged the rag into the dirty water, wrung it out, and was about to wipe down the final section when a sharp voice rang out right above my head.
"Aria!"
A rag was flung straight into my face.
A burning sting flared across my cheek. I crumpled to the floor, and Donna was on me in an instant, her fist knotting in my hair.
"After all this time, you still can't scrub a floor properly!" Donna shrieked, her nails digging into my scalp. "You think you're a real Luna? You can't even give me an heir! I don't know why Damon bothered marking a useless Omega like you!"
My scalp burned like fire. I bit my lip to keep from crying out. If I stayed quiet, Donna's punishment would end sooner.
Damon wasn't here. And even when he was, he never once stood up for me in front of his mother.
"I wasn't slacking," I said, defending myself in a low voice.
"The fact is, you didn't finish it in the time you were given. Everyone saw it." Donna yanked my hair and shoved me down. My knees cracked against the marble, bruises blooming on contact.
"Yes, Luna Donna. She was spacing out in the kitchen this morning, didn't even touch the rag," a maid chimed in, making sure every ear in the living room caught it. "I'd say that's why she can't finish."
"That wasn't slacking!" I scrambled to my feet, unable to hold back. "I was eating breakfast. Two slices of bread. It took less than four minutes."
The maid shrugged. "I'm only telling you what I saw."
"You're lying!" I clenched my fists. "And this was supposed to be a three-hour job. You only gave me one hour."
"Enough!" Donna cut me off. "I'll deal with you later. Right now, take a shirt to Damon. He's negotiating with Alphas from the other packs at Lane Hotel. You will bring him a clean shirt."
The maid tossed an ironed white shirt into my arms.
I could finally breathe. Clutching the shirt, I dragged myself out through the manor gates. Maybe I could steal a moment in the bathtub of the hotel suite. The scrubbing had wrung me out.
Maybe tonight he'd finally want to touch me. We were staying at a hotel tonight, and we'd never spent a night at one before. Maybe that was a sign.
And it was Lane Hotel.
That building used to belong to my father. On my tenth birthday I'd spun in circles beneath the chandelier in the lobby while he promised to hand it over to me the day I came of age. Four years ago, the moment I said "I do," it became Damon's property, just like the mark on my neck.
The instant I stepped into the lobby of Lane Hotel, my steps grew lighter.
Across that marble floor I could see the ghost of the little girl I used to be, running everywhere. By the revolving doors my father had once hoisted me onto his shoulders so I could watch the snow falling outside. Behind the front desk was the mirror where I'd tried on my mother's lipstick for the first time.
At some point, my knees stopped hurting.
I took a deep breath and walked to the door of Damon's suite. It was half open, and a woman's laugh slipped out through the crack.
"No way..." My pulse spiked.
I stepped up to the doorway and looked in through the gap.
Damon was on the sofa, his hard chest heaving with every ragged breath. A she-wolf knelt between his legs, her hair spilling over her shoulders, her mouth working up and down his thick cock.
That she-wolf's voice dripped a sickening sweetness, each word a slap across my face. "Damon, that poor Omega hasn't let you touch her in four years. How would she know you're actually in my bed every single night?"
"She wouldn't dare suspect a thing." Damon's voice went cold. "Where could she even go? Her father's pack is a pile of bones by now. No one but me would take in a cursed Omega."
My stomach turned.
"You're right," the woman giggled. "So why not just reject her? An Omega like her is no use to you anyway."
"Shut up. You're crossing the line." Damon was losing patience. "You've got my cock in your mouth. Focus."
"Sorry..." she apologized, then let out a shameless moan. "Alpha, let me serve you now."
My nails bit into my palms, and blood welled up from beneath them.
I couldn't take another second of it. I shoved the door open hard, and then I recognized that face. Anissa.
My personal maid back in the Silvermoon Pack. When the rogues nearly killed her, I'd begged my father to save her life. After the pack fell, I'd gone out of my way to ask Damon to look after her. I thought she was different from the rest of them. None of that mattered now.
I just couldn't believe it was Damon.
I blinked back the tears threatening to spill and stared straight at him.
"Aria?!" Damon lurched up, hauling up his pants in a panic. "What are you doing here?"
"You've got the nerve to ask me that?" I roared. "Alpha Damon, why don't you tell me how your dick ended up in my maid's mouth?"
"Did the waiter mop the floor so slick you slipped and fell on it?" I stared at him.
Anissa stepped forward at once. "Ma'am, please don't be upset. Alpha's under a lot of pressure, he needs to let off steam. Besides, when you were rescued that day... you'd already been taken by others. Alpha simply can't feel any desire for you."
It slammed into me like a punch to the chest. I couldn't believe it.
So that was it. Damon wouldn't make love to me because of how I'd looked when he found me seven years ago, half-dressed. But that wasn't the truth at all. I closed my eyes. If he'd truly loved me, he would have asked me what really happened.
I ignored Anissa and kept my eyes only on Damon, the man I'd loved for seven years, the man whose mark I carried on my neck. My father had told me no Alpha would ever betray his bond. That was why I'd never once doubted him.
The pain of the betrayal seared into my skin like a branding iron. No. I wouldn't fall apart here. My mother had told me, too, that when someone betrays you, the only thing to do is turn around and walk away.
And I owed him nothing anymore. I'd scrubbed every floor in this pack. Every inch of my body had been beaten. I had paid him back for saving my life.
"I reject you, Damon!" I roared. "I want to break the mate bond!"
Damon went pale with shock, like watching a Barbie doll open its mouth and speak.
Anissa couldn't believe it. She shrieked, "Aria! You're overreacting! You should understand! You gave your virginity to those rogues, and Alpha Damon still marked you. You should learn to accept whatever your Alpha does to you."
I glared at her, furious. "Anissa, remember this. Traitors never come to a good end."
"Never!" Damon came back to himself with a roar, his Alpha presence erupting in a blast that crushed down on me until I could barely draw breath. "Aria! Come to your senses!"
I forced myself to endure the suffocating weight. A tearing pain ripped from the mark on the side of my neck, as if my wolf spirit were clawing to break free of its chains. "Let me go!"
"You need to face reality." Damon's voice was ice. "Walk away from me and you're a rogue. Every pack on the West Coast answers to me, except Bloodmoon. I'll order them all to turn you away."
I shoved his hand off. "We'll see about that."
I turned and ran. Now I understood why he'd never rejected me. He never needed to. An Omega Luna was no obstacle to him sleeping with whatever she-wolf he wanted.
But he'd underestimated the will of a she-wolf who'd already survived the annihilation of her pack. I would never bow to whatever fate threw at me.
Clutching the white shirt I'd never delivered, I stood in the lobby of Lane Hotel. The chandelier overhead looked exactly the way it had when I was ten.
Damon, you fucked another woman under my father's roof.
I swear I'll take this building back from you. Brick by brick, along with everything you stole from me.
Then I remembered one more thing he'd forgotten: his best friend, the Alpha of the strongest pack in the alliance, the Bloodmoon Pack. Ronan Thorne.
He'd always wanted me to leave Damon. From the very first time he laid eyes on me, that was the one thing he believed.
Aria's POV
I was walking toward the pack border when my phone rang. It was Eva. My best friend.
"Aria!" Her voice was thick with anxiety. "I just heard Donna tormented you again today? God, are you okay?"
My voice caught in my throat. "Eva... I found something out."
"What?"
"I need to see you. Right now."
I needed a moment to compose myself, so I decided to go to Eva's place first, then find Ronan.
Eva's villa was only three kilometers from the Blackmoon Pack. By the time I arrived, the sky had gone completely dark. I had run three kilometers; my lungs burned, my legs wouldn't stop trembling, and the wind kept drying the tears on my face.
I barely had the strength to knock.
When Eva saw my face, her pupils shrank. "Fuck, you look like you've been run over by a train. What the hell happened?"
The dam broke. Tears poured down my face in waves.
"I caught Damon in bed with Anissa."
Eva's mouth fell wide open, her jaw nearly hitting the floor. "Anissa? Your maid?"
Her voice shot up several pitches, sharp enough to cut. "That bitch who pretends she's a saint!"
"And Damon." She drew a sharp breath, her chest heaving. "That shameless bastard! You're his mate! He took your property from you and then turned into a bastard!"
Eva suddenly stopped cursing. Her eyes darkened, and her voice trembled.
"Aria... is it because of me? Because four years ago, I was kidnapped by rogue wolves and you rushed out to save me, right?" Her voice faded. "You were taken by those rogue wolves... so Damon hasn't touched you all these years? Was I the one who dragged you into this?"
"Eva!" I cut her off, my voice firm. "Listen to me. Nothing happened to me. Those rogue wolves did catch me, but they didn't do anything. When Damon got to me, I was still untouched."
"Then why would he-"
"Because he chose to believe the obvious." I gave a cold laugh. "Or maybe he just needed an excuse not to touch me. Now I know the truth. He's been sleeping with other she-wolves this whole time."
Anger blazed in Eva's eyes. "That bastard! Aria, you can't keep taking this. You've let people misunderstand you for years, just to protect my reputation. You have to tell Damon the truth, and then divorce him!"
"I tried. He refused to accept it." My voice turned cold. "He said I was nothing, and that if I left him, I'd be a stray dog."
"That arrogant bastard!" Eva cursed again. "In fact, for the past seven years, Damon has kept you from working. We all know how smart you were in school."
I took a deep breath.
"I want to take back my hotel."
Eva opened her mouth, but in the end she only said, "You signed the transfer agreement."
"I know." I stared at the floor. "Four years ago, on our wedding day, Damon put the documents in front of me and said they were routine procedures for merging pack assets. I signed them without looking twice."
I lifted my head. "But there is a clause in the agreement. If the original holder can prove they have the ability to manage the hotel independently, the board has the right to reconsider ownership."
"...But you're an Omega." Eva's voice was very soft.
"I know," I said. "The board won't trust an Omega. I have to prove myself somewhere else first."
"Weston Hotel." Eva jerked her head up, her eyes brightening. "The best hotel group on the West Coast. They opened an executive trainee position just last month. I know their HR director-"
"Weston Hotel." I repeated the name.
Fate liked to play jokes sometimes. The owner of Weston Hotel had been my father's greatest competitor while he was alive.
"Set it up for me," I said.
Eva was thrilled. She spun around on the spot and waved both hands in the air, as if she had just won an Oscar.
"You've always wanted to go back. I knew it from the first day I met you. Every time you walked past the hotel entrance, your eyes lit up."
"That's right," I said. "I can feel my father's presence in a hotel. Damon wouldn't let me work. He said a Luna didn't need to work. Donna said going out to work would disgrace the Blackmoon Pack. Now I don't care anymore. I'm not a Luna anymore. Whether he accepts it or not."
Eva's excitement slowly cooled. She sat back down on the sofa and looked at me. "Aria, I can help you get the job. But the divorce..."
She hesitated.
"Ronan is the best lawyer in the alliance, that's true. But your situation is too difficult. You're a Luna marked by Damon. You have no job, no assets, no children, and you signed a property transfer agreement. Unless Damon agrees himself, no lawyer can touch this marriage. And Ronan and Damon are good friends."
"He's always wanted me to divorce Damon," I said confidently, "because he thinks my Omega status isn't a match for Damon. That means he'll definitely help me."
"I hope so," Eva said. "If Damon keeps making things difficult for you, I swear I'll tell the truth."
I hugged her. I knew how hard it had been for Eva to get to where she was today.
"Don't worry. I will protect you."
"I'll protect you too," Eva said, crying.
She picked up her phone and was just about to dial.
The phone rang.
"Damon." Eva froze as if she had been turned to ice.
My heart sank, all the way to the pit of my stomach.
Damon's voice came through the speaker. "Eva. Aria is with you."
"She isn't." Eva's voice was as cold as ice, cold enough to freeze someone to death.
"Don't lie to me. I know she went to you. Her phone goes straight to voicemail, and she doesn't have another friend in the Blackmoon Pack." Damon's voice began to rise. "You think you can hide her?"
Eva glanced at me. Her eyes were asking what she should do.
"You hurt her! I will never allow you to take her away." Eva's voice was wild, reckless.
Damon stopped pretending to be a gentleman. His words became naked threats, stabbing through the phone like a knife. "Eva, you're a public figure. Your agency has a partnership with the Blackmoon Pack. Your next film, the investors are my people. Your Oscar nomination, your red carpets, your endorsements-all of them are my people. You won't even be able to get a bathroom commercial, Eva."
His voice grew colder and colder. "If you don't hand Aria over, I guarantee you won't be able to stay in Hollywood. When I say something, I mean it."
"Then do it. If you want to torment Aria, I'd rather destroy my own career!" Eva said furiously.
"Torment her? No. I love her," Damon said suddenly. "Let her come home. I'll explain this to her. Listen, I don't have much patience left!"
Love me?
I hung up the phone.
An hour ago, his hand had still been buried in another she-wolf's hair.
Eva looked at me, the anger in her eyes slowly replaced by despair. She knew that in this pack-centered world, no matter how rich or famous a human was, they were still vulnerable before an Alpha.
"I hate the rules of this world," she said through gritted teeth. "I hate that I can't protect you."
"You've done enough, Eva." I gently hugged her. "You reminded me who I am."
"You can't go back. We both know what you'll face if you do," Eva insisted.
"Eva, I have to go back. Damon can do it. He will destroy your career. You fought for ten years to get where you are today. I can't let all your effort go to waste. I can't."
Eva's shoulders shook violently.
"Besides, Pearl is still there, remember? That adorable little cat. I have to get her out." My voice was so gentle, as if afraid of scaring her. "But I won't stay long. I'll find a way to leave him. Truly leave. Ronan Thorne isn't my only hope. There is also the interview opportunity at Weston Hotel. I will prove to everyone that I, Aria, can live well without depending on anyone."
Eva said, almost in despair, "Promise me."
"I promise."
"Swear it."
"I swear."
Her hands slowly loosened.
"You're ten thousand times stronger than Damon." Eva's voice was filled with anger and heartache. "Remember that. You're ten thousand times stronger than him. A million times. You deserve the best."
I walked out of Eva's villa. The night wind was colder than when I had arrived.
I knew why Damon refused to divorce me. It was not politics, it was not money, and it was not love. The moment he slept with Anissa, love had already died completely. He simply wanted to assert his possessiveness as a male. A Luna he had marked, even if she was barren, even if he despised her, had to remain in his territory and be at his disposal. This was an Alpha's instinct, and it was also his pride.
I would obey.
But only for now.
Once I got through to Ronan, I would leave that place.
Aria's POV
The gates of the Blackmoon Pack manor stood open, as if they'd been left that way just for me.
When I stepped into the Alpha's bedroom, Damon was on the sofa, nursing a glass of whiskey. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like an enraged beast about to lash out.
The moment he saw me, the glass shattered in his grip. Shards bit into his palm, and blood dripped through his fingers onto the floor.
"You're back." His voice was low, dangerously calm, like the last second before a storm.
He came toward me, every step heavy with menace.
"Do you have any idea what you've done? How dare you reject me! You ripped my fucking heart out."
"You betrayed me." My voice was steady.
"That meant nothing!" Damon's hand clamped around my jaw, forcing my head up to meet his eyes, his fingers grinding into my jawbone. "Anissa was never the woman I wanted. She was nothing but a convenient release. And I promise you, no one will ever threaten your place as Luna."
God, how had I been so blind to his shamelessness? I'd truly believed he loved me.
"Damon, you know I never cared about being Luna. I only cared about you. And you destroyed all of it." I glared at him.
"I've already fixed my mistake." Damon's voice dropped. "I had Anissa removed from the pack."
"I don't care that she's gone. I want to end this! Why won't you sever our bond? Your parents despise me. You resent me for not being a virgin. No one in the pack accepts me." My voice was ice.
"Because I remember what we had. I remember pulling all-nighters together in the lab back in college. That's why I marked you even after I found out you weren't a virgin!" Damon roared. "Do you have any idea what a concession that is for an Alpha?"
A concession. I laughed bitterly inside. He treated it like charity, like a gift handed down from on high. And I had spent four years grateful for it.
He'd shut me out over a misunderstanding, and now he expected me to swallow his insane rules.
Never.
"It doesn't matter. The moment I saw you cheating, every memory we shared meant nothing to me." I turned to leave the bedroom.
But Damon seized me and shoved me down onto the bed.
His body crashed down on me instantly, his weight crushing the air from my lungs. His knee forced my legs apart. One hand pinned my shoulder while the other started working at my buttons.
"Get off me!" I shoved against his chest with everything I had, but he didn't budge.
Damon tore my shirt open, buttons scattering across the floor. His hand reached behind me and unclasped my bra. It fell away, and he caught my nipple between his teeth, his tongue dragging hard across it.
"Aria, I'm not letting you go. I'll get you pregnant. Once you bear my child, the entire pack will accept you. Even my mother will have to shut her mouth. It's the only way."
"Let go of me!" I braced both hands against his chest. "I'm an Omega. Aren't you afraid I'll give you a weak pup? Aren't you afraid my dirty blood will taint your precious Alpha bloodline?"
Damon's eyes went red. His voice dropped to barely a whisper. "I don't care. You're not going anywhere, Aria. You're my marked Luna. That's not changing."
"Do you remember the first time we met?" he said suddenly, his voice going soft, unrecognizable from the man seconds ago.
I closed my eyes. I didn't want to hear this. It would only remind me what a fool I'd been.
"You were in the woods at the edge of Blackmoon territory, beaten half to death, lying in a pool of your own blood. When I picked you up, the first words out of your mouth were, 'Leave me. You'll get hurt.' You were practically dead, and you were still worrying about me. Aria, from that day on, I knew what kind of woman you were. You don't deserve to be treated like this. You deserve the best."
"Fascinating. So shoving your dick inside another she-wolf is your idea of what's best for me." My voice dripped with venom.
"Aria! I was only venting my pain!" Damon roared. "Do you have any idea how much I suffered, not getting there in time? Letting those rogue wolves-"
The words died in his throat, his eyes raw with agony. I knew what he'd been about to say. They all believed the rogue wolves had assaulted me that day.
I wanted to tell him the truth about that night. But looking at Damon-maybe, if he knew about Eva's pain, he'd only use it to control me even more.
I took a slow breath. Looking at his face, a bone-deep weariness settled over me. But I needed to stay calm. I had to find a way to make Damon sign those divorce papers on my own terms.
If I kept fighting him, kept pushing, he really would lock me in the basement.
"I'm too tired tonight. I need to rest." My voice was steady again.
Damon looked up, his eyes boring into mine, trying to read whether I meant it.
"Aria-"
"I mean it." I pushed him off and straightened my clothes. "If you keep forcing yourself on me, I'll bite my own tongue off."
Just then, the door swung open.
Donna stood in the doorway, wrapped in an expensive silk robe. Her gaze swept between me and Damon, her lips curling into a cruel smirk.
"Well, well. Look who's back." Donna drew out every word, each one dripping with venom. "The sheer nerve. Running around till midnight, then marching back into this house like you own the place. Do you have any idea the whole pack is laughing at you?"
"Mother." Damon's voice went cold.
"Am I wrong?" Donna crossed her arms and stepped right up to me, looking me up and down like I was something she'd scraped off her shoe. "A packless Omega, marked by an Alpha, and still not satisfied. Running off and coming back past midnight. You think you're some kind of princess? You're worth less than a stray dog."
"Enough!" Damon growled, unleashing his Alpha presence.
Donna froze. She stared at Damon, and the shock in her eyes was impossible to hide.
"Aria is mine." Damon stepped in front of me, cutting off Donna's stare. "She will never scrub another floor. No one lays a hand on her. Whoever does answers to me."
"Damon, have you lost your mind?" Donna's voice went shrill, her face flushing red. "Do you know what she-"
"I said enough." Damon's words landed like a slap across Donna's face. "Go to your room. Now."
Donna's lips trembled with rage. She shot me one last venomous glare, then turned and stormed out, slamming the door hard enough to rattle the walls.
I stood there, stunned. This was the first time Damon had ever defended me in front of Donna. But it was too late. I wouldn't give him credit for it.
Damon turned back to me and reached for my face. I turned my face away. "I need to rest," I said flatly.
Damon's hand hung in the air. His shoulders sagged, a wounded look flickering in his eyes.
"Fine. Go to sleep. Tomorrow, you'd better get it straight who your mate is."
I went upstairs to the cold, dilapidated bedroom I'd lived in for four years and opened the old laptop on the desk. Just thinking about the words I was about to type made my fingers tremble. I had made up my mind. I was divorcing Damon.
Step one of my plan: I searched "divorce agreement template" and downloaded one.
I wasn't sure Ronan Thorne would come through for me in the end. I needed to try every other possibility.
I called the top twenty divorce lawyers on the West Coast, one after another. But the moment they heard Alpha Damon's name, every single one turned me down flat.
"Look, Aria, the entire West Coast knows who the Alpha of the Blackmoon Pack is. Taking your case means making an enemy of the whole pack. No lawyer will take that risk."
Over a dozen calls. Over a dozen rejections. Each one reminded me that in this world, I was nothing. An Omega with no pack, no family, no money, begging for the right to divorce.
I closed the call screen and stared at the last name on my list. Ronan Thorne.
The Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack. And the most renowned divorce lawyer on the West Coast.
I'd met him before.
He was Damon's closest friend. And he had never once spoken a kind word to me.
But I was out of options.
