Chapter 1

The ballroom buzzed, a sea of expensive gowns and tuxedos. Houston's elite gathered for the annual Space Exploration Gala, a night dedicated to funding dreams of the stars. My dream.

I stood near a display of model rockets, my heart tight. This was supposed to be a night to network, to feel closer to my father's world. He'd been a NASA astronaut, a hero. He died on a mission when I was a kid, leaving me his Distinguished Service Medal and a burning desire to follow his path.

Then, the auctioneer's voice boomed, "And now for a special, unlisted item, folks! A bit of fun, submitted anonymously!"

A large screen flickered to life. My stomach dropped.

It was me.

A series of photos, intimate, taken out of context. Me laughing, me looking tired after a late study session, me in my pajamas in what was clearly my old room at Liam's family estate. They weren't scandalous, but presented this way, as a "gag," they were deeply humiliating.

Laughter rippled through the crowd.

"Let's start the bidding at five hundred for these... candid shots!" the auctioneer smirked.

Hands shot up. Wealthy young men, Liam's friends, egged each other on.

"One thousand!"

"Fifteen hundred!"

I saw Liam across the room. He was laughing, a drink in his hand, nudged by Bianca. Bianca, daughter of another astronaut from Dad's fatal mission. Her family had spun a tale of her father's heroism, a story that overshadowed my own father's true sacrifice. Liam and Owen, my childhood friends, sons of other astronauts on that mission, felt some twisted obligation to her.

The bidding climbed. Two thousand. Three.

My face burned. I wanted to disappear.

I fumbled for my phone, my hands shaking. I needed Owen. He was always the more level-headed one. He'd stop this.

"Owen, please pick up," I whispered, ducking into a small alcove near the restrooms.

His voicemail. Of course.

I leaned against the cool marble, trying to breathe. The laughter from the ballroom was a dull roar.

Then I heard voices from the other side of a decorative screen. Liam's voice, sharp and annoyed.

"Did you have to make it so damn public, Owen? The photos were enough."

My blood ran cold.

Owen's voice, lower, conspiratorial. "She needed to learn, Liam. She was getting too arrogant, refusing to give Bianca that internship. Someone had to find those photos. The PI did a good job, didn't he?"

Internship? I had won that internship at AstroCorp fair and square. It was a dream placement. Bianca had wanted it, badly.

"She disrespected Bianca's family," Owen continued, his voice hard. "Their sacrifice. This is just a little lesson."

A lesson? This public flaying?

My call to Owen, my desperate hope for help, had led me straight to the source of my torment. It wasn't just a cruel prank, it was a calculated attack, orchestrated by the boys I grew up with, the boys whose fathers my father had served alongside.

The betrayal was a chasm opening beneath my feet.

Chapter 2

The auctioneer's voice cut through my shock, "Going once, going twice... to Mr. Harrison for five thousand dollars! Unless our lovely subject wants to reclaim her... privacy?"

All eyes turned to me.

Liam was watching, a smug look on his face. Bianca clung to his arm, a picture of false sympathy.

I walked back into the ballroom, my steps heavy.

The auctioneer grinned. "Ms. Hayes? A counter-offer to save face?"

I looked directly at Liam. My voice was quiet, but it carried.

"No."

I paused.

"I'm done."

Liam's smile faltered. He looked surprised, maybe expecting tears, a fight.

He recovered quickly, his voice loud, dripping with contempt. "See? No shame at all."

Bianca rushed to my side, her hand on my arm. "Oh, Ava, you poor thing. This is terrible. Don't listen to them."

Her eyes, however, gleamed with triumph. I pulled my arm away.

Later, my phone rang. Owen.

"Ava? I just heard what happened at the auction. That's awful. Are you okay?"

His voice was smooth, concerned. The same voice I'd heard plotting my humiliation.

"I can't believe someone would do that," he continued. "Listen, about that AstroCorp internship... I know this is bad timing, but Bianca is really counting on it. You know, with everything her family went through, her father's heroism... we all kind of owe them."

The old, familiar pressure. The narrative of Bianca's father, the supposed hero, while mine was subtly painted as reckless. My father's integrity, his wish for me to be strong, echoed in my mind.

"Fine," I said, my voice flat. "Bianca can have the internship."

"Great, Ava. You're doing the right thing. It means a lot to us, to her."

I hung up before he could say more.

My hands were steady now. I scrolled through my contacts and found Dr. Ramirez's number. My university professor, a former NASA mission controller, someone who knew my father, respected him.

"Dr. Ramirez? It's Ava Hayes. About that research position at the McDonald Observatory... is it still open?"

"Ava! Yes, it is. A bit remote, not as glamorous as AstroCorp, but challenging work. Are you sure?"

"I'm sure," I said. "I'll take it."

A quiet observatory in West Texas. Far away from Houston, from them. It felt like the only sane choice.
