She was out of breath...
The cold morning air hit her straight in the face but that was hardly surprising, usually that was what the temperature is early in the morning, but all Jane Jensen could concentrate on was escaping. Her mind screamed at her to run at a rapid pace. She was being persecuted by god knows whom. All she knew was that she had to find help.Fast! The men pursuing her could be killers or psychopaths for all she knew. God knows why she had the thought to go out for a run in the first place, all alone without any protection.
The forest loomed all around her, trees surrounding in every direction making it impossible for her to identify which path to follow, not even a single trail in sight to make it easy for her. The heavy footsteps suddenly apprised behind her, the men seemed to be closing in on her. There were three men altogether, from what she could tell, the trio were dressed in black, not to mention heavily built and they reeked of alcohol, presumably drunk. Drunk! Oh hell no...
Men usually in this condition are considered to be dangerous. But in her case, definitely dangerous. Jane had fortuitously bumped into them, those so called goons, while she was on her way to a long run that she was deprived of, the reason being, her recent injury, results of a bicycle incident. Jane was accosted by the trio on the abandoned silent street with no sign of help anywhere and the only escape Jane could think of was to run in the direction of the relatively large area that led towards the forest. And a huge mistake that turned out to be.
The highway.....of course why didnt she think of that before. If only she could divert those thugs enough to escape in the direction of the highway to seek help. Maybe thats what I should do but how....think Jane think. All Jane could feel was her heart pounding like crazy with fear and dread.
She looked behind her to gauge the distance between them and increased her pace a bit more to keep them at bay until she could not see them anymore but still could hear their heavy footsteps but it was a bit faint now.
Jane suddenly changed the direction of her pace and started running towards where she could hear a faint blaring horn of a vehicle which probably meant that she was not far from the highway....But first she had to get rid of her pursuers. She ducked behind a thick branched tree that provided a perfect spot for her to stay invisible from their sight.
Controlling her breathlessness was a difficult task but now she had to control her heavy breathing to keep as quiet as possible, it was either that or give away her hiding spot....no chance of that. Jane could see, feel them coming closer to where she was hiding. She covered her mouth with a hand to keep from making a noise to alert them of her presence.
"Darn it, where the hell did she go?" a slurry voice spoke from somewhere close to her.
"Well she ain't far from us thats for sure," a different voice answered with a slurrier speech.
"I've kept an eye on her for the last two days, no way am gonna just let her get away," another low pitched voice spoke spreading chills all over Jane. Just then they all heard a loud squeak from somewhere behind them and Jane froze in fear, holding her breath.
"Did'ya hear that, I bet she went that way , looks like we got ourselves a feasty meal boys," the first thug spoke in a more clearer voice, ridding of his slur. Their accent was different, Jane absently wondered which dialect they spoke.
Did they see me...God I hope not. She could feel her heart pounding a bit more, faster than its previous pace.
She peeked from her hideout, the rustle of leaves debris from behind her made it easy for her to detect the movement of the men. All of a sudden the men moved in the opposite direction from where Jane was concealed in her hideout. She sighed in relief and then waited for a few minutes to make sure the coast was clear before making her way towards the direction of the highway as she had previously detected. Jane could now easily espy the highway, it was not that far away from where she was.
This area did not seem familiar to her. There were no cars or any other vehicles in sight. Now what. She looked behind her. Not a single soul in sight. Jane half ran, half walked, a few miles along the edge of the highway. She could not manage to move any further, deciding to take a break instead. A tremendous idea, considering the suffer she was going through from fatigue. She walked back toward one of the trees and leaned against it, all the while keeping an eye out on the road for any vehicles. She was lost. That was the first thing that emerged, rather clicked on her mind. With that thought her situation registered, she was exhausted, thirsty, not to mention hungry and on top of that she was sleepy. She needed help and her Dad.
"Dad....oh Dad I need you so much right now," Jane couldn't hold back her sobs any longer. Tears automatically coated and filled her eyes. If only her Dad were here with her, he would have just given her a big hug and everything would feel right all around her. It made her realise how helpless she felt without him. Her father was the only good thing in her life, he played the role of a mother to her ever since her Mom passed away when she was only twelve years old. Jane was twenty years old now but her father still treated her like a kid. Now she really felt lost without her Dad.
Determination brought her upright in a standing position, Jane wiped her eyes with her palm. No more tears. She would seek help and then go straight home into her fathers loving arms. Jane walked for another ten minutes along the road when she astonishingly came across a service station.....oh thank god....she let loose a laugh in relief while jogging across to the station.
Two vehicles were parked there, but her attention was only centered on one car which piqued her interest. It was a lamborghini, it seemed odd or rather strange, sighting an expensive flashy car, particularly in this area. She needed to call her Dad immediately. Jane was almost there when without warning, three familiar figures emerged from the restroom. She froze in fear and quickly hid behind one of the vehicles nearest to her, fortunately it was the flashy car. She ducked behind it and then peeped from there, they were coming in the cars direction, so that meant one of the vehicle were theirs. She quietly opened the cars door, which was surprisingly unlocked without the presence of a driver and eased her way in and crept inside at the backseat.
Jane waited for a few minutes for them to get inside the other vehicle but they sure were taking their precious time.....discussing something earnestly, looking from their serious expressions she could tell. Overcome with sudden tiredness and exhaustion, Jane felt her eyes close off on their own accord, she couldn't possibly doze off right now.
The fear of getting caught terrified her but the need for sleep was what controlled her entire body together with the luxurious comfy, warm feeling the car provided.
Jane was uncertain of when she dozed off , the only thing registered on her mind was the awareness of the car door being opened before her mind surrendered to the darkness that engulfed her.
The incessant cries of the babies that echoed around, left Nick irritated with the situation in which he found himself in. He wished himself somewhere else than here. Thoughts of all the deals he would have cracked satisfactorily by now caved into his mind, but involving himself in his friends happiness was much more crucial.
His best friend, John Russell was happily married and now his happiness seemed to have multiplied with the arrival of his twin baby boys. Nick felt ridiculously envious of his buddy's blissfulness, shocking himself with his feelings, he once believed himself incapable of.
Lately Nick felt restlessness in everything he did which had nothing to do with his business empire. Nicholas Fortune was considered one of the world's most richest self made billionaire, feared by most people because of his ruthlessness when conducting business, some portrayed him as the most bewield or rather the most domineering man.
"Hello....hello...earth to Nick," Emily Russell waved her hands in front of Nick to gain his attention. Startling Nick from his wayward thoughts. He immediately looked her way, expecting that knowing look of hers.
" A penny for your thoughts," she grinned at him mischievously, naturally a smile graced his face, revealing his dimples which Emily was pretty sure what made several ladies swoon to his good looks but not her, she was oblivious to it as her heart belonged to her college sweetheart and best friend, John. They all had spent college together but somehow she ended up falling for John, who was built like a hulk, at least that's how some people would describe him at first sight.
" Just thinking about how sexy you look with babies, darling," Nick winked flirtatiously at her for which she laughed and playfully swatted his arm.
" Flattery will not get you out of this, so spill," she said studying his face quite expectantly, all the while admiring his baby blue eyes. Nick sighed knowing she wouldn't leave him until he told her but he was not really in the mood for advice or lecture which she was pretty good at.
" Nothing important but I do need to leave though. It's a long drive back and I'm having a meeting early tomorrow so gotta prepare some stuff for it," he replied evasively just as John joined them from putting the babies to sleep. Finally!
" So there's no chance of you joining us for dinner then ?" said John joining in on the conversation.
" Afraid not , maybe next weekend if nothing important comes up," he regretfully replied. As much as he loved to catch up with his friends and adore theirs twins, Nick really felt like spending time alone for his own state of mind, the previous weeks were quite hectic not to mention filled with consequential incidents.
" Yeah sure, whenever suits you and maybe we could have a barbecue, it's been a while since my wife here had some long overdue and her most needful rest," admitted John while putting his arms around Emily's shoulder, gathering her close to his side . In response, Emily instinctively slid her right hand around his waist while she looked up at him and smiled affectionately. John looked down at her, their gazes met whilst they shared a few kisses.
"Ewww gross, go get a room before you start making out in front of me and probably conceive in my presence. I don't want to be scarred for life," Nick shrieked dramatically. They both pulled away from each other,Emily blushing furiously, John grinned at Nick arrogantly. He added teasingly." and I really do have to get going now so spare me the exhibition," without waiting for a reply, moving forward and hugging the couple and saying his goodbyes, and walked outside towards his car.
He owned several collections of cars but his most prized possession was the Lamborghini Huracán which he preferred to drive for his own convenience. Nick liked to buy old cars and remodelled them after which he sold them out. That was almost like a hobby to him, somewhat like a side job. Even though he owned several Hotels and Resorts establishments spread or rather scattered all over the world.
The tabloids titled him as ' The Fortune Hotelier'. Along with several headlines associating him with several socialites, rumors of supposedly affairs that he sometimes never knew he had.
Nick was reveried out of his thoughts when his phone beeped with a message , he glanced towards it, ignored it, and focused back to the road in front of him. Not preferring to communicate with anyone at the moment.
A few minutes later he drove across a service station , he turned on the indicator and turned right to enter and parked the vehicle , took off his seatbelt to get out. He only spared a glance at the battered vehicle parked across from him as he went inside the service station. As he entered the bell on top chimed , he walked forward and picked some stuff from the shelves, pulled out his cell phone and sighed.
There was no signal in here. Putting it back in his pockets as he approached the cashier counter and paid for his stuff , making small talk with the cashier who was more interested in flirting and checking him out. Unbelievable.
Nick picked up his package from the counter, bid his goodbye to the girl and exited but as he approached his car, he looked across and saw four men arguing beside the old blue vehicle.
They were so engrossed in their argument that they failed to notice Nick. Not giving them any more thought, he opened his door and slid inside, putting the package on the seat next to him, absently noting that he left his car unlocked. Nick strapped on his seatbelt and started the car, the powerful engine roared to life, startling the men as all their attention shifted to the car that was across them and everyone looked in awe, admiring it.
"Could've stolen that beauty," one man commented as they watched the car drive away.
"She got away. We lost her, what are we gonna tell the boss now ?".
Refulgence of the bright morning light shone on Janes' face. Snuggling with indulgence into the softness and savouring the warmth beside her. She slowly came awake, reluctantly opening her eyes, blinking away sleep, stared at the dull white wallpaper above her, momentarily dazed. This is not what my rooms ceiling looks like, wait! This is not even my room, she thought.
Alarmed, Jane became aware of her unfamiliar surrounding, she bolted upright in bed, looking around at the room in panic.
"What the hell," she voiced her thoughts loudly. Only then feeling, registering the presence of a person beside her, before a husky voice spoke in her ear, closer than she was comfortable with.
" Not quite the greeting I expected. " She turned her head towards his voice and spoke the first thing that came to her mind.
" It's you. " Jane gasped, vaguely recognizing him. Her brain in a turmoil, scrambling, attempting to connect the dots of the last events on her memory. However, the last thing she remembered, recalled more like was crawling inside a strangers vehicle.
"And we meet again, under unusual circumstances, of course," he said casually leaning back against the headboard, crossing his arms, watching her studiously, with interest.
"How in frigging hell did I end up, in a bed, with an arrogant ass like you," Jane bit back through gritted teeth. Staring boldly into his blue magnetic eyes that made her heart race, for the first time noticing just how surprisingly beautiful his eyes were, curiously studying his posture, obtusely noting his sleep mussed brownish black hair in a disarray arrangement falling on his face, it seemed a bit longer now compared to when she last saw him. He had the face of a movie star with high cheekbones and a chiseled jaw that looked stubborn as he did. Her eyes drifting lower, towards his mouth.
Gosh! He has kissable lips. Very mobile. That too. Focus Jane Focus !
Shaking her head, Jane couldn't help but shift her attention towards his broad shoulders, his very muscular physique and how he filled out that shirt.
Am I gawking ? Oh no . I am totally drooling over this guy.
She directed her gaze back to his face and was startled to find that he also was studying her form with an intensity.
She started to feel uncomfortable under his gaze. Peering down at her body, Jane noticed her own wrinkled top, mortified when she saw how much cleavage was revealed to his inspecting gaze.
She quickly grabbed the duvet, covering her chest from his direct hypnotic eyes. Amused, he grinned suddenly, trailing her action whilst her heart started slamming, beating like crazy. He seemed even closer now, much to her nervousness even though he hadn't moved at all , his close proximity creating havoc within her, craving distance from him.
In a hurried manner, Jane tried to maneuver, whilst unknowingly dragging the sheets with her, attempted to get out of bed with the duvet still clutched to her chest.
When suddenly her legs tripped on the sheets and Jane went tumbling down on the floor beside the bed with a loud oomph.
