Chapter 1
The city seemed different in recent weeks. The streets no longer had that same gentle and familiar excitement, as if a heavy cloud had fallen on everyone without warning. Jaxon's arrival had turned everything upside down. In the blink of an eye, this young billionaire from nowhere had risen to the top of the city, taking control of its businesses, its institutions, and even, it seemed, its residents. Those, like my family, who were not ready to bend to his will, were quickly pushed aside.
My once respected father was now a shadow in his own office. Jaxon, with his cold and relentless strategy, had pushed him out of influential circles, reducing him to a mere spectator. Seeing my father waste away because of this man revolted me, and as the days passed, my anger grew.
Jaxon. His name was on everyone's lips, but his face remained an enigma to most. I just knew that he was a formidable businessman, and that the rumors of his cruelty did not seem exaggerated. Employees who dared to oppose his methods ended up being fired or completely wiped out. A man like that deserved neither respect nor admiration. Yet a part of me wanted to understand how a human being could inspire so much fear.
Fate gave me no choice but to find out for myself. It was during a charity gala organized by a neighboring company, in a prestigious salon in the city center. I accompanied my parents, who perhaps naively hoped to regain part of their lost reputation. I knew Jaxon would be there. It was as if his presence hovered above us, eerie and invisible. Everyone was murmuring, looking towards the entrance, impatient and nervous.
Suddenly the crowd parted, and he appeared. Tall, slender, with an almost frightening confidence. His dark suit, tailored to perfection, contrasted with the cold glow of his eyes, which roamed the room as if taking possession of each person present. My heart began to beat faster without me understanding why. Jaxon was...fascinating, despite everything I knew about him.
He advanced slowly, greeting the guests with a polite but distant nod. When he looked at me, my whole body froze. His icy blue eyes seemed to read beyond my thoughts, and I found myself looking away, like a child caught at fault. However, I had come with a clear mission in mind: approach him, seduce him, and find a way to avenge my father and my family. But in front of him, this resolution seemed to waver. How could I be attracted to this man who had destroyed so many lives, including my father's?
I felt his heavy gaze return to me. Then, against all expectations, he headed in my direction. My parents, standing aside, glanced at me worriedly. They knew what I was about to do, even if they didn't approve of my plan.
"Good evening," he said in a deep, calm voice, his intense gaze fixed on mine.
I composed myself, trying to hide my confusion behind a confident smile. "Good evening, sir... Jaxon. »
He gave a slight smile, amused. "You know who I am, then. But for me, I have the pleasure of discovering a stranger in the middle of so many... familiar faces. »
His remark made me blush, but I forced myself to respond confidently. "Indeed, I know your name. Everyone is talking about it in town, it's hard to miss you. »
He let out a short, almost sarcastic laugh. "And yet, I remain a mystery to many. Maybe even for you. »
His gaze scanned every nuance of my expression, as if trying to guess what I was thinking. I felt vulnerable, exposed, and a part of me wondered if it was wise to play this game. Yet that's what I decided: to get closer to him, to get justice for my family. It was now or never.
"Maybe I know you more than you think," I replied, almost provocatively.
He raised an eyebrow, intrigued. " Oh yes ? In this case, enlighten me. What do you know about me, miss...? »
"Emma," I said, lifting my chin. "Emma Rosenthal. »
He froze for a second, and I guessed he probably heard the name in an unflattering context. The tension between us was palpable, but he remained impassive.
"Nice to meet you, Emma. So tell me...what do you know about me? »
I could have told him everything I heard: that he was ruthless, calculating, that he ruined lives without scruple. But strangely, these words did not pass my lips. Maybe because, deep down, I wanted him to see me differently from everyone he had ever manipulated.
"Well..." I took a breath. "You have a reputation as a leader, a determined man. But I wonder...is that all that defines you? »
His smile faded slightly, as if my question had destabilized him. Then he answered, after a slight pause. "Maybe that's not all. But few people care. What interests them is power, success. »
His words resonated with me unexpectedly. Behind this icy facade, was there a man different from what people said about him? I didn't want to let myself be moved, but his look, suddenly more vulnerable, shook my certainties.
"Maybe some people prefer to see beyond appearances," I muttered, almost to myself.
He looked at me for a long time, and for the first time, I thought I detected sincere emotion in his eyes. This moment could have lasted forever, if a voice had not broken the silence.
"Jaxon, we'll be waiting for you in the private room. »
He nodded at the assistant, then gave me one last look. "I hope we can continue this conversation one day, Emma. »
And without another word, he disappeared into the crowd, leaving me alone with my thoughts and my racing heart. What had just happened? Why had I felt such attraction, when every fiber of my being was screaming at me to be wary?
My parents quickly came to join me, worried. My father placed a hand on my shoulder, pulling me from my thoughts. "Emma, did you manage to talk to him? »
I nodded, still confused. " Yes. But he's... different from what I thought. »
My mother seemed reluctant. "Remember why we are here, Emma. This man ruined our family. »
I pull myself together. They were right. No matter what I had seen in his eyes, no matter what flaws I had perhaps guessed, Jaxon remained the man who had caused my father's undoing. What I had felt was only an illusion, a trap I should not fall into.
"Don't worry," I finally replied with a reassuring smile. "I know what I have to do. I'm going to get closer to him. I will make him fall in love with me, and I will make him pay for everything he has done. »
My father nodded, relieved. " GOOD. So take your time, but be careful. This man never let anyone escape him. »
I knew my parents were right. The road that opened before me would be strewn with pitfalls. But I no longer had a choice. My fate was tied to Jaxon's, for better and, quite possibly, for worse.
Chapter 2
In the days following the gala, my thoughts remained muddled. The memory of Jaxon, of our exchange, haunted me like a dream from which I could not free myself. I remembered his look, both cold and intrigued, and the mysterious smile that had accompanied his goodbye. However, now was not the time to let my emotions take over. I had a specific objective: to make him fall under my spell in order to better destroy him.
To do this, I had to get noticed. Let me introduce myself into his world, slowly, by showing myself to him as an irresistible and captivating woman. I had always known how to use my charm to get what I wanted, but with Jaxon, everything seemed more delicate. He seemed insensible, as if he had erected an impenetrable wall around himself. However, I knew he had his weaknesses too, and I just needed to find where to strike to crack him.
This is how I began to frequent the places he used to go: his favorite cafes, the receptions where he was invited, and even his sports club. Each time, I made sure to cross his path by "chance", taking care never to appear too insistent. My goal was to pique his curiosity without arousing his suspicion.
One day, as I was leaving a chic café, I met Jaxon's gaze, who was sipping an espresso at a table near the window. I pretended not to notice him, but I knew he was watching me. I felt his gaze following my movements, as if he were trying to decipher something hidden within me.
Finally, I passed by his table, pretending to be absorbed in my thoughts. Just as I was about to go out, he called out to me.
"Emma." »
I turned around, surprised, then made an effort to smile naturally. "Oh, Jaxon, what a coincidence! »
He raised an eyebrow, smirking. "It's funny how fate often puts us on the same path, isn't it? »
I felt my cheeks turn pink, but I quickly regained control. " Maybe. Or maybe I just frequent the right places. »
He invited me to sit down, and I took my place opposite him, feigning a detached attitude. For a few minutes we talked about small talk, but I felt that he was analyzing my every word. Then the tone changed when he asked me a question that surprised me.
"Tell me, Emma, what are you really looking for? »
His gaze darkened slightly, and I understood that he was testing me. I decided to play the sincerity card – or at least, a version of it.
"I guess I'm trying to understand why you're so intriguing to so many people," I replied, looking him straight in the eye. "You have this reputation as... as someone formidable, but I only see one man. »
He laughed softly, a laugh without warmth. "Maybe you're right," he murmured, looking down. "But be careful, Emma. Curiosity can be dangerous. »
A shiver ran through me, but I refused to show the slightest sign of weakness. "I'm willing to take the risk. »
There was silence, then he leaned forward slightly, closing the distance between us. "Okay, Emma. In that case, perhaps I could suggest a way to satisfy that curiosity. »
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. " Oh yes ? And what would that be? »
"You could work for me." »
The idea took me by surprise, but I did my best to hide my surprise. Work for him? It was an unexpected opportunity, much more direct than anything I had envisaged. This would allow me to approach him continuously, to enter his world and discover his flaws from the inside. However, one should not appear too eager.
"Why me? » I asked, giving a skeptical smile. "I'm sure you have dozens of qualified candidates vying to join your company. »
He shrugged, a calculating glint in his eyes. " It's true. But I'm looking for someone... different. And you, Emma, you have this curiosity which seems interesting to me. »
For a moment, I felt that something in his eyes had changed. Maybe he was testing me. Perhaps he saw in me a challenge, a woman who refused to bow to his simple authority. Whatever the reason, I was ready to play this role.
"In that case, I accept," I replied, holding out my hand. "As long as I don't regret venturing into your world. »
He grabbed my hand firmly, squeezing it a little tighter than necessary, as if to remind me who I was dealing with. "Trust me, Emma. You may regret a lot of things working for me. »
Barely a week after this meeting, I joined Jaxon's company as an assistant in one of his departments. It was a small, discreet division, far from the core of his operations, but it still gave me access to certain information, and, above all, allowed me to interact directly with him.
The first days were strange. Jaxon appeared distant, focused, his face closed, almost expressionless. I observed his behavior carefully, studying his every move. Quickly, I discovered darker aspects of his personality. The employees seemed to walk on eggshells in his presence, and he did not hesitate to reprimand them for the slightest mistake. He demanded absolute perfection, total control, and those who dared to contradict him were dismissed without hesitation.
One evening, as I finished arranging files in his office, he stormed in, his features drawn with fatigue, but also with visible anger. He looked at me, and the intensity of his gaze froze me.
"Emma, come here," he ordered, his voice low and strained.
I stepped forward cautiously, wondering what he could possibly want.
"Have you read these documents?" » he asked, placing a thick file on the table with an abrupt gesture.
I shook my head, slightly nervous. "No, I just put them away. »
He sighed, exasperated, then seemed to change his mind. " Alright. You'll quickly learn that in this business, no one has the luxury of just doing the minimum. You are here to support me, Emma, not to be a simple administrative assistant. »
I took a breath, trying not to flinch under his piercing gaze. "I understand, Jaxon. And I'm ready to do anything to rise to the occasion. »
His lips curved into a smile, but there was nothing warm in that expression. " Perfect. In this case, you will provide me with a detailed report of these documents by tomorrow morning. And make sure that no errors slip in. »
I nodded, aware that it would be a sleepless night, but determined not to fail. I hadn't chosen this path for ease, and I knew that if I wanted to gain his trust, I would have to prove my determination.
That night, alone in my small office, I delved into the files he had entrusted to me. What I discovered left me perplexed. The documents revealed questionable transactions, market manipulation strategies, and even compromising information about some of Jaxon's partners. It gave me a direct insight into his world, his methods. He would stop at nothing to achieve his goals, and I began to understand why so many people feared him.
In the early morning, with tired eyes but a determined heart, I gave him my report. He looked through it without a word, then looked up at me, his features impassive.
"Not bad," he finally declared, placing the file on the table. "You did a good job, Emma. Maybe even better than I expected. »
I felt a mixture of pride and uneasiness. Working for him was like walking on a wire above the void. But I still had this little inner voice, the one that reminded me that all of this was just a means to achieve my true goal. I had to hold on to this thought, even though I already felt that something inside me was wavering.
Ait.
As I was about to leave his office, he stopped me with a soft but firm voice.
"One last thing, Emma. Never forget that in this business, loyalty is essential. You're loyal, aren't you? »
I turned around, looking him straight in the eye, and said confidently, "As loyal as it comes, Jaxon. »
A glint flashed in his eyes, as if he had just guessed something invisible to me. For a moment, I thought he had understood everything. But he just stared at me for a moment, then nodded.
"Perfect," he replied in a whisper. "So I made the right choice in hiring you. »
With each day that passed, I felt the threads of my plan weave more and more around him, but also around me.
Chapter 3
As she was about to leave the office after a meeting about her new position, she felt a familiar presence in the hallway, an insistent gaze. She froze, trying to hide the slight shiver that had just run down her spine. Looking up, she met Jaxon's gaze, standing there, observing her with an interest hidden by his eternal mask of calm. It was both disturbing and fascinating, and despite herself, she felt caught in an inexplicable tension.
"I see you've quickly got your bearings," he said, his deep voice echoing in the silence of the hallway. She tried to maintain her confidence, but the proximity of this man always had the gift of disturbing her. His imposing presence, his sharp gaze that seemed to pierce into her most secret thoughts... She took a breath, holding back a hint of challenge in her eyes.
"I learn quickly," she replied, giving a discreet smile. She knew, every interaction with Jaxon had to be weighed. The slightest gesture, the slightest word.
"That's something I'm beginning to understand," he replied, his gaze sliding over her with an intensity that made her blush despite herself. "But tell me, why this sudden interest in my business? he asked, his voice soft and controlled, but she could sense a slight hint of distrust.
She hesitated for a split second, then replied, with apparent sincerity, "I want to find out what it means to work for someone like you. I guess that must be...interesting. »
He took a step closer, further closing the space between them. She could almost feel the heat emanating from him, that intoxicating mix of danger and attraction. His hand brushed her arm, forcing her to hold his gaze without flinching. "There are many things to discover, indeed," he murmured, as if it were a warning.
Her heartbeat accelerated, but she didn't allow herself to step back. She didn't want to show him any flaws. His hand moved down slightly, brushing her wrist, as if toying with the boundary of what was acceptable. She knew it was a kind of test, a game where she had to prove that she was capable of resisting his grip.
"I hope you are ready to face the reality of this universe," he added.
