Chapter 1
First Time in The Ball Family's House
A high-speed railway station stood in the heart of the city. A woman in a white T-shirt stepped out, suitcase in hand. She was delicate and pretty, her slightly curly hair casually draped behind her. Beneath her finely arched brows were a pair of clear, bright eyes, a straight nose, and cherry-colored lips. Even without makeup, her natural beauty was striking.
"Hello, are you Miss Margaret? I'm the chauffeur for the Ethan family."
Margaret nodded, feeling a bit relieved, and followed the driver into the car. Exhaustion was evident in her every movement. As they drove away from the station, the driver glanced at her in the rearview mirror. She had her eyes closed, resting.
This was President Ethan's fiancée.
Ethan Joseph was the president of the Ethan Group, just 21 years old, yet already a powerful figure in the business world. People feared him for his sharpness and ruthless efficiency. It seemed absurd-Margaret, with no prestigious background, was now engaged to such a powerful man. She had arrived by high-speed train, not by private jet.
The driver couldn't help but scoff internally. "Marrying into a wealthy family like the Ethans... impossible for a girl like her."
Margaret opened her eyes slightly, gazing at the unfamiliar city with a calm, unreadable expression.
Soon, the car arrived at the Ethan family home. The driver grabbed her luggage, but just as they stepped inside, a middle-aged woman stood in their way. Her face was painted with disdain.
"Mrs. Sharon," the driver greeted her.
Margaret, sensing the tension, barely reacted before Sharon threw the contents of a beer bottle at her. The liquid splashed across Margaret's clothes.
"And don't forget the shoes and hair," Sharon sneered.
The pungent smell hit Margaret instantly. Without missing a beat, she covered her face and coldly asked, "Are you insane?"
Sharon's face twisted in fury. "As expected, a girl from the countryside. You're an embarrassment. We have to disinfect you-what if you bring bacteria into the Ethan household?"
Margaret would have walked out and never returned if she had the choice. But instead, she smirked. "Auntie, maybe you should spray some in your mouth. It's disgusting."
With that, she strode past Sharon and entered the house.
"You-!" Sharon sputtered, fuming as Margaret disappeared down the hall. Inside, another woman, dressed head to toe in luxury brands, eyed Margaret with disdain.
"So, you're my cousin's fiancée?" the woman-Ethan Wyatt-said, sneering at Margaret's plain appearance. "Tsk. Grandpa's taste is really slipping. I heard you came by train? You should've said something. We could've flown you here. But then again, does your little hometown even have an airport?"
Margaret shot her a cold glance, unimpressed. "Is the Ethan family always this full of itself?"
She didn't bother explaining that her high-speed train ride had been a personal choice. She could have called in a private jet if she had wanted to. Ignoring Wyatt's mockery, Margaret headed upstairs.
Wyatt, seething at being ignored, stormed after her. "Where's my room?" Margaret asked a maid quietly trailing behind her.
Before the maid could respond, Wyatt butted in. "This way." She flung open a door. "I bet you've never stayed in a room this nice before. You better get used to it. I'm Ethan's cousin, by the way-Ethan Wyatt. You'd better please me. You never know when you'll need a favor."
Before Wyatt could finish, Margaret stepped into the room and slammed the door in her face.
"How dare that bumpkin treat me like that? What's wrong with Grandpa?" Wyatt fumed outside.
The maid, uncomfortable, whispered, "Miss, this is Young Master Ethan's room."
Wyatt shrugged dismissively. "So? My cousin hates when people touch his things. When he finds out she stayed here, it'll be her fault, not mine."
With that, Wyatt's eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
Chapter 2
Climb into Jose's Bed
She didn't realize this was someone else's room until she saw the bathroom filled with men's toiletries. She thought the Ethan family had done it on purpose. What a strange place.
In just three months, the bet between her and her grandfather would come to an end. If, after three months in the Ethan family, there was still no affection between her and Ethan, the engagement would be canceled.
Margaret took a shower, ate the dinner served by the servants, and, after a tiring day, fell asleep.
It was already midnight when Ethan Joseph returned home from a social event. He knew his fiancée had arrived at the Ethan family's house today, but he had asked his driver to pick her up while he continued working. He had no interest in her and figured the engagement would be broken sooner or later.
After returning to his room, Ethan took a shower and lay down to sleep. Perhaps because he had drunk too much, it wasn't until he was in bed that he realized there was someone else in the room.
Startled, Ethan couldn't see the woman's face clearly in the darkness. She turned over and hugged him, murmuring, "Little Bear, be good. Don't make trouble. Go to sleep."
Ethan's entire body stiffened. There was a familiar scent on the woman, one that triggered distant memories. The alcohol dulled his reaction, and instead of pushing her away, he lay down comfortably and soon fell asleep.
That night, Ethan slept peacefully, something that hadn't happened in a long time. In his dreams, he saw a scene from ten years ago-a girl in a dark room held him close and said with a childlike voice, "Don't be afraid. I'm strong, and I'll protect you."
The next morning, Ethan Wyatt, who had gone to bed early, was surprised when she didn't hear any news of Margaret being kicked out of Ethan Joseph's room.
What was going on? Could it be that her cousin hadn't come home last night? But his car was in the garage! Could they really have slept together?
Wyatt knocked on the door. "Cousin, Auntie has prepared breakfast. Don't you have an early meeting today? Get up quickly!"
Both Margaret and Ethan were jolted awake. Margaret realized she was curled up in someone's arms. Her eyes widened in shock as she pulled away and asked, "Who are you?"
Ethan, equally startled, frowned. "Margaret?"
Margaret quickly pieced it together-this was her rumored fiancé, Ethan Joseph. But why was he in her bed? Who could explain this?
Before she could speak, Ethan continued coldly, "So, on your first night at the Ethan family's house, you climbed into my bed. Impressive."
Shocked, Margaret looked at him. "What? I climbed into your bed?"
"This entire family must be out of their minds," she muttered. Thinking back to the men's toiletries she had seen yesterday, she realized that this was Ethan's room, and Wyatt had deliberately misled her.
Margaret got out of bed, glaring at Ethan. "First of all, I didn't climb into your bed. Wyatt told me this was my room. Secondly, I'm not interested in you at all."
"And another thing," she continued, "I was already asleep when you came in last night. You should've noticed someone else was in the bed. You held me the whole night, so if anything, you're the one who should explain yourself."
Ethan's face darkened. He remembered parts of the previous night, but he had no retort. His mind flashed back to the past, the familiar scent on her, the memories of a long-lost girl.
Margaret smirked. "What's the matter, Mr. Ethan? Are you enchanted by me?"
Snapping out of his thoughts, Ethan scowled. "Get out. And don't come into this room again."
Margaret didn't hesitate. She gathered her things and left, the two of them already resenting each other.
Wyatt was still standing outside the door, looking stunned as Margaret walked out.
Smiling, Margaret greeted her with, "Good morning! Just as you wished, your cousin held me all night. We got along wonderfully."
Wyatt's face turned red with anger. "That's impossible!" She couldn't believe her cousin would do such a thing, but the proof was right in front of her.
Chapter 3
Loser From The countryside
She left with a smile.
Ethan Wyatt was furious. "You country bumpkin! I'm telling you, it's impossible for me to let you marry my cousin."
As soon as he finished speaking, Ethan Joseph also walked out of the room.
When Ethan Wyatt saw him, he immediately gave in. "Cousin."
Ethan Joseph's face was gloomy. It was obvious that he was angry, and Ethan Wyatt didn't dare to provoke him further.
...
She asked the servants to take her to her room. After packing, she went downstairs for breakfast.
Ethan's mother, Ethan Wyatt, and Ethan Joseph were seated at the dining table.
Ethan's mother said sarcastically, "You got up so late and didn't even bother to make breakfast. Do you really think you're the Young Madam of the Ethan family?"
Margaret glanced at her and replied indifferently, "But I'm not a servant of the Ethan family either."
"You want me to make breakfast? Dream on!"
Ethan Joseph remained silent, but it was clear from his expression that he was not pleased.
The entire meal felt tense. Afterward, Ethan's mother handed Margaret a card, trying to appease her.
"There are 5,000 dollars in the card. You should buy some decent clothes before going to the company. And remember, don't cause any trouble for Cloud City."
To help strengthen the bond between Ethan Joseph and Margaret, Ethan's family had arranged for her to work as his secretary. Her grandfather had insisted, and despite her reluctance, she agreed to try it out for three months.
But this 5,000 dollars? Margaret could tell Ethan's mother was looking down on her. She replied sarcastically, "Thank you, Auntie, but there's no need."
Margaret's clothes were custom-made, and the Ethan family clearly couldn't recognize their value. Deciding not to argue further, she went upstairs to change.
As soon as she reached her room, her phone buzzed. A 50-million-dollar transfer notification appeared, showing a balance filled with zeros.
Then, she received a text from her grandfather:
"Baby granddaughter, take care of yourself. Buy whatever you want. Let me know if anyone dares to bully you."
Smirking, she texted back:
"Grandpa, the Ethan family is bullying me. This isn't fun at all."
Her grandfather quickly replied:
"It's rare for you to get bullied. Well, well, grandpa is going fishing."
She shook her head, feeling both amused and relieved. "..."
After changing into a professional suit, she left the Ethan family estate. The driver opened the car door for her, and to her surprise, Ethan Joseph was already inside.
"Didn't you say you weren't interested in me? Why are you going to the Ethan Group to be my secretary?" His voice was calm but filled with sarcasm.
Margaret glanced at him. "I promised Grandpa I'd stay with you for three months. After that, we'll call off the engagement."
Ethan Joseph sneered. "Aren't you afraid you'll fall in love with me during these three months? Don't regret staying in the Ethan family by then."
Margaret chuckled at his arrogance.
"So, the legendary confident Mr. Ethan is this full of himself? Let me tell you, I won't fall in love with you in three years, let alone for the rest of my life."
To her, Ethan Joseph was nothing more than a handsome face.
His expression darkened at her words. How could she think she'd never fall for him?
"Rest assured, you better remember what you just said."
Ethan Joseph couldn't shake the feeling that she was playing hard to get. If she didn't like him, why had she come to the Ethan family in the first place?
Margaret gave him a fake, professional smile. "Don't worry, Young Master Ethan. In three months, we'll part ways. And when we get to the company, let's pretend we don't know each other to avoid any unnecessary misunderstandings."
Ethan Joseph didn't respond, but his mind was spinning. Word had already spread outside that Ethan Joseph had a fiancée, and rumors about her being a country bumpkin were circulating.
At the Ethan Group, everyone was gossiping.
"Have you heard? President Ethan's fiancée is going to work here as his secretary!"
"Isn't she some ugly girl from the countryside? What kind of backwater school did she graduate from? Can she even read documents?"
"Haha, I bet she doesn't even know how to use a computer!"
...
When Margaret and Ethan Joseph entered the company together, the office fell silent in shock.
