"You can't possibly do this to us Edward, she's your daughter for crying out loud," Jane screamed, following her husband inside the bedroom, she was holding the divorce papers in her hand as she walked hastily behind him.
"That thing is not my daughter Jane, she's not my daughter, I've endured for too long, who's gonna inherit all these, uhn! Tell me Jane," Edward yelled back at her, his eyes were almost popping out from their sockets.
It showed how angry he was.
Their little drama had been going on for years now, Edward had finally giving up and brought up the divorce papers to his wife whom he no longer wanted. He had been keeping his cool just because he loved Jane, but it seemed the love he had for her had quietly elude him.
All he wanted now was the divorce and nothing more.
"How dare you call our daughter a thing Ed, she has your blood flowing in her veins, why don't you accept her for who she is; she didn't create herself Ed. Don't do this!" Tears had gathered around Jane eyes as she spout her laments with all her heart.
For once in her life, she somehow regretted that she gave birth to Emily. Everything that was happening presently was because of her daughter, Emily.
"There's absolutely nothing i can do Jane, a blind girl cannot inherit my wealth, and you're not going to give birth any longer just as the doctor says, I've made my choice. Take it Jane, take it!!" Edward yelled again, he dragged his tie lose, flinging his briefcase on the large kingsized bed that was in the room.
Edward Edmund was a politician in Atlanta, he was a very rich one at that; and he was also a businessman with many companies. Edward wasn't just a normal politician, he was a greedy one and would do anything to get remain in his position or get to a position. He was at the time preparing to contest for the governorship election which was coming up the following year.
Edward and Jane had been married for years but never got a child and when their breakthrough came, God gave them a child that would never see the light of the world. Even though her child was born blind, Jane loved her that way, but Edward was disappointed, not only because the child was blind, but because it was a female child.
Nevertheless, the latter was the primary reason for his disappointment. Edward never liked Emily since the day she was born because of her permanent blindness, being very rich; he had taken her to all sort of specialist hospital all around the United States and even outside the country but there was no cure to Emily's blindness.
This disheartened Edward and increased his hatred for the child he never liked. However, because of his love for Jane, he had to accept the child; he had no choice. When Edward popularity had fame grew in the political world, his dislike for Emily broke its boundaries, he couldn't boast of a child in front of his friends; all of his colleagues and fellow politicians had a beautiful son or daughter who accompanied them to meetings and seminars but Edward was ashamed of his daughter, he regretted ever having her as his child.
He finalized his decision of divorcing Jane when the doctor report provided that she couldn't produce children anymore. He had to find an heir to his wealth. He needed to remarry a younger woman.
"There's something you can do Ed, where do you expect us to go for God's sake Ed. Why are you doing this," Jane collapsed on the floor, bursting into tears, she couldn't hold it any longer; she wasn't expecting Edward to go such extreme because of he wanted to get rid of Emily.
It came as a surprise, even though he had been saying it, Jane thought he didn't have the guts to do such a cruel act, since Emily was his child too. But here she was begging the same man she underestimated.
"I don't care about your tears anymore Jane, sign the papers and let get done with this. You'd have some of my property and money so you've nothing to loose. You and your blind child would live happily ever after," Edward concluded, and went into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him.
His mind was made up, still; he didn't want to see Jane tears. They had been married for over twenty years, it was hard for him too but this was the only choice he had.
There were too many reasons he had to divorce her, too many. "We won't be happy Ed, we need you, I personally need you. I love you Ed, from the bottom of my heart. You don't have to do this to me." Jane screamed in the room, as she continued sobbing; her heart was shattered, just in the blink of an eye, everything would be gone; including her happiness.
No matter what she got from the divorce, she was going to live in pain all her life. There was no reply from the bathroom, Jane could hear the sound of water coming out of the shower, he didn't even care about her.
She cried tirelessly on the cold concrete, some of her tears had stained the divorce paper, there was absolutely nothing she could do now, from the look of things; Edward had made up his mind already; he wasn't going to listen to her no matter how long she begged.
"God, why did you give me such a child, why do i have to be the one to take all the pain," Jane cried, muttering the words amidst her tears.
Tears trickled down Emily's face as she laid outside the door of her parents bedroom, hearing her mum cry made her cry also. Knowing that everything was happening because of her brought so much pain to her heart, she covered her mouth as she wept quietly.
"What the hell are you doing here Em," Jane yelled with tears all over her face.... Emily gasped....
Emily was speechless, she didn't know the words to say, tears trickled down her cheeks. Even though Emily was blind, she was able to move around the house, with the help of a walking stick.
She was so familiar with the mansion that she didn't even need her walking stick sometimes. Emily was an intelligent lady, after graduating from the school of the blind, she had been spending most of her days listening to audiobooks and improving her knowledge, however; not until this incident started.
She had lost interest in everything since her father started showing his signs of hatred towards her. Now all she did was cry and wish she was never born. Being the cause of the problem was more burden than one could possibly imagine.
"Get up Em, you're the cause of our problems, get up and go to your room, I don't want to see you roaming around. I'm still trying my best to convince your father," Jane said furiously, staring down at Emily, she was a little angry and frustrated; and it was expressed fully on her face.
"There's no convincing me Jane, sign that papers and let me have it." Edward's voice came from the room, it sounded like a note of finality.
Jane went down on her knees, she was obviously tired, frustrated and confused at the moment. If she didn't sign the papers, there's no telling what Edward would do, he could as well throw them out and they wouldn't get anything like they would if a divorce took place.
She had no other choice, he had made up his mind. Pleading was just wasting of her time and energy. Jane stared at Emily, she was still laying there weeping; Jane's feelings were mixing up, seeing her daughter weep so heavily, she wasn't sure whether to be angry or sad, but a mother would always have her daughter at heart; No matter the situation, she quickly went on and grabbed Emily, embracing her as they lay in front of the bedroom door, sobbing together.
"Why am i the cause of these problems mum? Why was i even brought to this world. It's painful mum, my heart hurts as hell," Emily cried, her mum embraced her tightly; stroking her hair.
"Just stop talking darling, don't say any more words, we'll get through this, I'm sure we would. As long as we've each other, we'll get through this." Jane wept alongside her daughter, even though she was trying to console her daughter, she couldn't fight the tears that came freely from her own eyes.
Edward stood near the bedroom door watching both his about to be divorced wife and his disowned child weeping, although the tears got to his heart. It wasn't strong enough to change his will, his mind was made up; there was no going back now.
***
[About A year later]
Jason walked through the aisle, there were hundreds of people in attendance; it was the retirement of his father, and he was about to hand over all of his business to him. This was the moment he had been waiting for all his life. With the money and power he would gain from owning his father's businesses; he would be able to do anything he wanted. He would by all means, no matter the amount, find his mother without his father knowing.
"Please welcome my son Jason as he walks up to the stage," Williams stated, smiling brilliantly at the crowd. He was clapping his hands eagerly has Jason walked up the stage.
He was so proud of his son, he was now a grown and complete man. Even though Jason had never brought any woman home, not even when he was in high school, his father still referred to him as a complete man and never for once asked him why. He was afraid the answer might be what he was thinking. Jason would find himself, Williams believed so.
Jason approached his dad and embraced him emotionally; there was a loud round of applause and cheering as the embrace lingered. Many people where present; the staffs, workers, partners, Jason friends as well as his Dad's and some few important customers of his father's businesses. After almost a minute of embracing, Jason cleared his throat, it been awhile he stood before a crowd. Probably, since his graduation speech in college.
There was no need for a microphone; there was a mini one that had been attached to his shiny black blazers. He wasn't nervous, neither was he scared; he was a very bold man.
"I commend you all for coming out here today, it is my pleasure having you here. Today unlike other days is a great day for me, for my dad and for the future of this company," Jason paused, he looked over at his dad and smiled at him.
Williams returned the smile with a charming one and the crowd cheered.
"As you all know, today Williams Jackson, my father; would be retiring from his duties. That doesn't mean he still isn't the owner of the companies, he remains the owner as far as there his breath in his lungs," Jason paused again, he wanted the crowd to cheer, it motivated him to say more. He loved his father, and could go on and on ranting about him.
The fact that his father hadn't been there for him during his childhood didn't get to him at all, Jason knew how busy his father was. Being the rich man kid, he was taken care of by different nannies and guards who provided everything he needed upon request.
However, what Jason treasures, was the little time his father usually spare almost everyday to see him and play with him during his childhood days. They weren't so many and they weren't so long, but they were the best memories he had and he treasured them so much. It was more than enough, for him. When he was about starting high school, that was when Williams told him about his mum.
Ever since then, Jason had kept that hatred in his heart and it affected his love life denying him relationships with women, and he wasn't concerned about it. It had been one of his goals to find his mother and ask her why she'd do such a thing, he'd shoot her in the face if he had to. Seeing other children mothers after school made his hatred more enormous, through high school and college.
Jason had kept that hatred all his life, but he never showed it to his father.
"Today, I'm the new CEO of Williams companies and co; and you all would work directly under me and with me why my father remains the owner of this company as he enjoys his retirement in wealth and pleasure." Jason finished his speech, and the crowd clapped and cheered. It was the beginning of a new era for the Williams companies, his own era; Jason thought; he stared at the cheering crowd and nodded in appreciation.
"Welcome to my world baby boy," Lydia whispered, from somewhere in the crowd, as she applauded Jason for his speech....
The seminar was almost over, all that was left was the eating and drinking session; the hall was filled with magnificent people. High class men and women, if you'd want to get connections to your business; being in this seminar would help greatly.
Williams was busy introducing is son to most of his business partners, today was his special retirement day. If he wasn't being congratulated, he was introducing Jason to a business partner or friend.
Jason was starting to get tired of the introductions and greetings, being in the midst of all these elderly people was so much boring, he needed to breath.
He was about to escape his Dad, when Williams grabbed him by the shoulder.
"Son, out of the people I've been introducing to you today; this person is a little special, I'm sure two of you have met one way or the other. Nevertheless, I've to introduce her either way," Williams spoke loudly, he was holding a glass of bourbon on his other hand.
Jason knew he was starting to get a little drunk, this was the first time he was seeing his father so carefree and happy, like true genuine happiness. Apart from the old days they spent together that is.
"This is Lydia Blunt, my secretary; as from this moment she's going to serve as your secretary." Williams announced with a brilliant smile. He took a sip at the contents in his cup and awaited his son's reaction.
Jason looked at the woman his father was referring to, she wasn't bad for a lady; her breasts was the first thing any man would see, at first look.
She was wearing a red silk gown, as usual; the gown revealed most of her cleavage. There was a flower embroidery design on the right breast, making her cleavage look more outstanding; her dark long hair were reaching her shoulders bringing out the glow of the red gown.
She had red lipstick on which matched her red gown and heels. Although Jason knew he won't be seeing her dressed like this often, the most he'd see was a skirt and blouse.
But there was no doubt, she was beautiful, but he didn't care about beautiful; women are trash to him. He just needed to act cool in front of his Dad, same way he had been doing all day long.
"Hi Jason, I've heard a lot about you from your Dad. It'd be my uttermost pleasure to serve both father and son," Lydia chuckled when she finished speaking, she didn't meet Jason's gaze instead she kept it on Williams who returned her chuckle with a soft laugh.
she also had a cup of wine with her. The side of Jason's lips, twitched; he grinned. It was the best he could give. "Nice meeting you miss Lydia," Jason's voice was low but the huskiness wasn't, he was the only one not holding a glass of wine or whiskey.
"If you don't want her, you can easily write a sack letter you know," Williams joked and burst out laughing, his laughter was loud and kind of embarrassing to Jason.
"That was a joke," he quickly added, taking a sip at his cup again. For a moment there, Lydia heart went up, she never took Mr. Williams words as a joke, and the new Ceo wasn't looking like someone she would easily manipulate, however; she was going to show him all the skills she had gathered during the years.
She let out a fake laugh just to pretend she was in sync with Williams joke.
"No, she'll do; I don't plan on cutting anyone off their payrolls. Nice meeting you once again miss Lydia, enjoy the rest of the party." Jason replied calmly with a the most brilliant smile he could give, and stretched out his hands for a shake.
Lydia brought up her hand, he collected it and shook it, she was a bit surprised; actually she was expecting him to brush his soft lips on her skin so she could feel the warmth. But he didn't.
She had so much work to do, if she wanted to get this man.
"Don't drink too much dad, I'm going to take some fresh air outside," Jason quickly chipped in before his father could say anything and started walking away, but still.
"I still have one person I've not introduced you to Jason, she's way more special and i guess this is the best time for me to tell you." Williams followed Jason as he was walking away, leaving Lydia standing there by herself.
She gave a villain type of smile, and walked away.
Jason stopped walking and heaved a sigh of frustration, he was really tired of the introductions but disobeying his father was one thing he would never do. He wondered who the special person was this time.
"Who is it this time dad, i need to take a breather real quick," Jason shrugged, his face was slowly turning into a frown when he saw a woman approached and stood beside his father.
She was a woman in her late forties, someone who was old enough to be his mother; yet she was beautiful and she looked rather young in appearance in her wonderful gown.
The frown slowly left Jason's face, he was a little surprised as different thoughts danced inside his head. It couldn't be what he was thinking.
Williams interlocked his arm with hers and was smiling so charmingly, Jason had never seen his dad smile this way; it was way different from all the kind of smile he had always put up. This time it was free from stress, pain and guilt. Seeing them standing together quickly reminded him of his mother, a woman he had never seen in his life.
Yet, seeing his dad with this woman was the most beautiful thing he had seen in such a long time.
"Jason, this is Jane Mitchell; we've been seeing each other for close to a year now. And finally, she's going to be my wife and make my retirement joyful and glorious; and if you don't mind, she'd be your first step mother." The words escaped Williams lips without hesitation....
