"Ouch..."
Carley Chambers felt a strong heat throughout her body as she turned over in bed, her hand suddenly brushing against a firm muscle.
Her eyes shot open. In the darkness, she saw a piercing gaze.
"Who..." She shrieked, "Who are you?"
The man lowered his head and slammed her lips with his.
As the chemistry between their lips diffused with each other, the air seemingly had been thickened with passion and desire.
Carley's heart was beating incredibly fast. She trembled as she tried to push away the man in front of her. However, due to the effects of the drugs, her feeble hands only managed to scratch at him lightly.
This simple gesture of hers ignited a fire within the man's body. Gently, he traced his lips down Carley's body, planting kisses on every inch of her body.
After a night of intense passion and intimacy...
Carley opened her eyes again in a daze, only to see a man whom she did not know lying beside her.
The man still seemed to be asleep, and as Carley looked at him, she noticed two intersecting knife scars on his back that looked grim and terrifying.
She froze in an instant, her mind becoming a jumbled mess of confusion and fear.
Her last memory was from the previous day, her 18th birthday. Her half-brother had insisted on celebrating with her and made a pot of precious tea for the occasion.
She only took a sip of the tea before passing out, unconscious.
After that, she found herself lying in a hotel room, completely n*ked. Moreover, there was a stranger next to her!
There were all kinds of clothes, including her underwear, strewn on the ground. Being no fool, she naturally realized what had happened the previous night.
Did she just lose her virginity?
She hadn't even had a chance to feel sad about it before the man woke up.
He quickly got dressed. His face remaining cold, he commanded her, "I'll have someone come to pick you up. Just wait here and behave."
Wait?
Was he going to get rid of her by murdering her?
Carley was so frightened that she quivered. After the man left, she endured the excruciating pain in her lower body as she trembled to put on her clothes. In a disheveled state, she hurriedly fled back home.
A month later...
Mr. Chambers suddenly threw a stack of paper onto her face.
"How could someone like you be a member of the Chambers family? You've slept around with some random man and ended up bearing his child. You're so shameless!"
Carley was completely taken aback. In a state of panic, she stood frozen in place, staring at the pregnancy test report on the floor.
How could it be? They had only done it once...
Ultimately, she was nothing more than an illegitimate daughter of the Chambers family, a shame to their family.
In his younger years, Mr. Chambers got drunk and ended up having a fling with the new nanny in the house. That led to Carley's birth.
The Chambers family never really cared for her; they made her start doing house chores at the young age of five. She was essentially an unpaid maid in the household.
Jaren Chambers, Carley's eldest brother, had intentionally set this trap that resulted in her pregnancy. Yet, he had the nerve to play the victim card and accuse Carley of being promiscuous.
She bit her lip in a pained expression, without offering any explanation.
In this household, no one would have believed her, even if what she said was the truth.
Mrs. Chambers said sarcastically, "She was exactly like her mother. In the past, her mother went out seducing men and ended up being pregnant with her. Now, her child is just another b*stard since she grew up without her mom. It's not surprising that she would do such an act. After all, it's in her blood."
"Look at Kristy, she's so poised and modest. She is at least a hundred times much better than her!"
How would the Chambers family face the public if this embarrassing secret were to be exposed?
Mr. Chambers yelled, "Go to the hospital right now and get rid of the baby. After that, leave the country and never come back again."
Upon hearing this, Carley, who was typically obedient and compliant, shook her head in response. With an extremely determined attitude, she said, "No, I want this child.
She was never truly treated as a family member by the people in this room.
On the contrary, the tiny life within her belly was her true flesh and blood.
"Carley, don't think for a moment that I'm here to negotiate with you. Let me make it clear that you have only two choices now: either do as I say, terminate the pregnancy, and go study abroad."
"Or, if you insist on keeping the child, you'll immediately cut ties with the Chambers family and leave this place. You will never have anything to do with us again!"
Mr. Chambers, in his rage, didn't consider her feelings at all when he spoke.
His only concern was to protect his own reputation.
"Okay, I'll leave!"
With her teeth clenched, she packed her belongings and left the house that had never given her any warmth.
Six years later...
In the largest hospital in Gludale City, the Peace Point Hospital.
The door to the operating room swung open, and out strode Carley, radiating an air of confidence.
After six years of hard work and perseverance, she rose to become a renowned neurosurgeon. With confidence in every move, she had shed the timidity and self-doubt of her past.
Although it was her first surgery since returning to her home country, her skilled techniques captivated the assistants and physicians in the operating room.
At last, everyone understood why the dean had chosen to hire this young woman.
After changing into her scrub, Carley hurried to her office.
She had lived alone overseas for over six years, during which she gave birth to a pair of adorable twins, who became the driving force behind her life.
No matter how difficult life might be, she was determined to raise her two children into adulthood.
But when she arrived at the office, she didn't see her children anywhere. Her heart skipped a beat. Oh no, the hospital was so crowded – could her children have been abducted?
With a growing sense of terror, she hurriedly bolted out of the office, only to see a blood-stained hospital bed as she approached the elevator.
A group of towering men were pushing the hospital bed toward her, and the man lying on the bed had his upper body exposed. Two glaring intersecting scars on his back made her pupils contract with fear.
Her body jolted as if hit by a bolt of electricity, leaving her frozen in shock and disbelief.
Wasn't he the one...
Memories of her worst fear resurfaced, as she remembered that fateful night when it all began. The haunting image of those two peculiar scars had been etched in her mind, tormenting her ever since.
She had believed that her relentless pursuit of excellence would rid her of him forever. Yet, how could it be that she encountered him again right after returning to the country?
Her nerves were so frayed that breathing became a struggle, and she had to prop herself up against the wall just to stay upright. Taking a deep breath, she fought to keep her composure.
Spotting a doctor trailing behind, she hastened to ask, "Excuse me, could you tell me what happened to the person who was just wheeled in?"
The doctor eyed her suspiciously, taking note of her hospital uniform. "Which one are you referring to?" he asked, his tone courteous yet wary.
The hospital saw an endless stream of patients coming and going every day, and among them, a considerable number arrived with injuries.
Carley's gestures betrayed her unease. "I'm talking about the patient who went past me just now. He was drenched in blood, with two linear scars across his back. He's quite a fierce-looking man."
The doctor nodded as if he had just heard the most natural thing in the world. "Oh, that's one of those street thugs. A bunch of them had a brawl earlier. Once they stop bleeding, they'll be shipped off to the police."
"Thank you, I won't disturb you any longer then," Carley said with a pang in her heart and took a step back.
"A street thug..." she thought bitterly. No wonder he was capable of doing such monstrous acts.
She gritted her teeth, wondering how her two smart, adorable kids could have a father who was about to be jailed for a brawl.
Although he was their father, he showed no ambition. Carley swore that she would never allow him to affect her two precious children.
She had made up her mind – she could not meet this man, let alone let him know about the existence of their children.
If she were to meet this man, he would likely use his despicable means to take away her children. But her children were her everything, and she would never compromise.
In the VIP ward.
Standing at attention beside the sickbed were two rows of impeccably dressed bodyguards.
Despite being gravely wounded, the man lying on the hospital bed exuded an intimidating aura that seemed to fill the entire room.
With a cold and menacing gaze, he surveyed the room, causing the two rows of towering bodyguards to quiver in fear.
"Please, spare me, Mr. Hardwick!" the man pleaded. "I truly had no idea who took the files. Someone from Mr. Cooper sent people over and I was merely being used by them."
The man gave a cold sneer. "You're at death's door and yet you still talk tough?"
In a voice devoid of any warmth, he exuded a bone-chilling aura that left those present quaking in fear. With a single gesture, the bodyguards behind him seized the man and dragged him out.
"Mr. Hardwick, I've been by your side for so many years, please spare my life! I truly don't know anything," the man begged.
"If he isn't going to spit the truth, then beat him until he does," Lance Hardwick said expressionlessly.
Lance was the head of the renowned Hardwick family, one of the most prominent clans in the country. Their business empire spanned the globe, and they were famous both in the country and abroad for their vast wealth.
Known to the outside world as "Mr. Hardwick", Lance was notorious for his ruthless character and unwavering thirst for vengeance. Those who had crossed him in the past seldom fared well.
The most popular private hospital in the country, the Peace Point Hospital, was one of the many businesses in the vast empire of the Hardwick family. The hospital boasted a multitude of world-class medical professionals and had many branches both in the country and abroad.
The atmosphere inside the ward was oppressively tense, with the guards barely daring to breathe.
Suddenly, the door burst open and a little girl in a pink princess dress scampered in. Her bright, watery eyes blinked as she gazed upon the group of people dressed in black inside. Her jaw dropped in amazement.
Her sweet voice quivering with fear, she asked, "H-have you seen my mommy?"
Sheree Chambers had not seen Carley for over two hours. She took the opportunity while her brother was getting himself a glass of water to sneak out.
Lance shot a sharp glance in her direction.
The others had expected a terrifying ordeal, but when Boss Hardwick and the little girl locked eyes, his steely gaze immediately softened.
It felt as if something had struck his heart.
Despite himself, he felt a pang of empathy when he saw the girl's distressed expression.
One of the bodyguards, who appeared to be astute, stepped forward and said, "Mr. Hardwick, I'm sorry. I'll take the child out right away."
Just as the bodyguard was about to grab the child, Lance immediately waved his hand to stop him and said, "Hold on, don't scare the child."
The bodyguards were taken aback, doubting whether they had heard him correctly.
In their minds, Mr. Hardwick was a ruthless and merciless demon. When did he become so gentle?
The little girl was very pretty, like a doll came to life from a painting, and for some reason, she bore a resemblance to Mr. Hardwick.
Lance gestured to the girl with a crooked finger and said, "Come here."
Strangely enough, after meeting his gaze, Sheree was not as frightened as before. She took slow, cautious steps towards him, who was lying on the bed.
As she drew closer, she realized that he was bleeding from his chest.
"Sir, you're injured. My mother is a doctor. As soon as I find her, I will ask her to treat your injury!"
"Is your mother a doctor in this hospital?"
"Yes, my mother is really skilled. She not only knows how to perform surgery but also knows non-medical therapies. When my brother and I were sick, she treated us herself!" Sheree said.
Speaking of Carley, Sheree was extremely proud. "My mother is amazing."
Lance had always been aloof and did not appreciate it when people chattered in his ear as such.
As the young girl stood before them, the bodyguards couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. They knew all too well that if Boss Hardwick became angry, she might be ejected from the ward right away.
However, Boss Hardwick looked on with interest as he stared at Sheree. Following her lead, he inquired, "What's your mother's name? I'll send someone to fetch her."
With his ability, locating someone in a hospital would be a breeze.
Before the young girl could utter a word, a boy's cold voice pierced through the door. "Sheree Chambers, come out now."
Sheree quickly waved her hand and said, "Goodbye, sir. My brother is here for me. When I find my mom, I'll make sure she treats you."
Lance couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of the little girl's earnest expression. He found himself drawn to her vivacious and innocent nature.
"Alright, it's a deal," he replied.
As soon as Sheree left the room, she was met with a reprimand from her brother.
"I have only turned away for one second and you're nowhere to be found. That's not how you should behave."
Sheree puckered her lips and clung to Shayne Chambers' arm. Her voice was sugary as she tried to appease him. "Don't be mad. I know I messed up, but I promise I won't do it again."
Shayne looked at Sheree with a mix of frustration and fondness. "Alright, but this can't happen again. Consider this a warning."
With that, he led Sheree back to the office.
As the two walked down the corridor, they soon ran into their mother, Carley Chambers, who was visibly upset.
"Where did you go? I was so worried. I was about to call the police," she said, her eyes red from crying.
"Don't cry, Mommy," Sheree consoled, wiping the tears from Carley's face.
"I haven't seen you in a long time, so I went looking for you. And on my way, I met a really cool and handsome man. He was bleeding a lot, so can you please help him?"
"Every patient who comes to the hospital has a doctor in charge, so you don't need to worry about him." Carley breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that her two children were okay.
Shayne blamed himself, saying, "Mom, it was my fault that I didn't take good care of Sheree. I shouldn't have made you worry."
Shayne was just a five-year-old child. And, Carley didn't have the heart to truly blame them.
She picked up both of them, gave each a kiss on the cheek, and apologized, "It's all because I'm too busy with work and don't have time to take care of you. Let's go, we'll go back to our new home together."
Carley had quite a few things to do next, but her first priority would always be her two children.
The trio arrived at their new home.
When Carley was recruited by the Peace Point Hospital, the salary offered was a real lure.
Living abroad, she had encountered her fair share of challenges and disputes. They gradually built up and compelled her to return home.
Prior to her arrival, she had secured a bright and spacious two-bedroom apartment through an agent.
Since she had mentioned that she would bring along her two little ones, the thoughtful landlord had even gone the extra mile and prepared a cozy bunk bed for them, bringing big smiles to the two's faces.
"Go ahead and pack up, and I'll get started on making dinner. It won't be long," Carley instructed.
Sheree pouted and said, "Mom, you have to hurry up! I'm starving!"
"Grab a snack to hold you over until dinner's ready," Shayne admonished with a stern expression. "Cooking takes time. You can't expect it to magically appear out of thin air."
Carley couldn't help but feel a bit nervous when she saw the serious look on Shayne's face. He had always been unapproachable since he was a child, scaring off other kids who were too afraid to play with him.
She didn't know where he had picked up that tone, but it certainly gave her a headache.
What if he couldn't find a wife in the future?
"Shayne, I've told you so many times, boys need to be gentle and considerate. Smile more, only then would the other kids like you."
Shayne was busy packing his bags. Frowning and annoyed, he said, "Go make dinner, don't just stand there foolishly."
Who did he take after at such a young age?
He was particularly domineering and always spoke like a little adult.
Carley couldn't help but complain inwardly before she went to prepare food in the kitchen to eat with the kids.
Aside from the challenge of balancing her demanding job, Carley now faced the daunting prospect of finding a suitable kindergarten for her two young children so they could learn and make some new friends. Besides, should her work become too busy, she would have to hire a babysitter.
All these fees alone would quickly drain her bank account.
It was clear that she needed to come up with new ways to earn money on top of working hard.
Early the next morning...
With a deep breath, she brought the two to the nearest prestigious kindergarten.
Being in such a strategic location, the tuition fee was much higher than in other kindergartens. After much consideration, Carley ultimately decided to pay the tuition of her two children for the next six months.
The teachers arranged for the siblings to be in the same class, providing some peace of mind for Carley.
As she dropped off her kids, Carley reminded Shayne, "Do look out for Sheree. I will come and pick you guys up later.
Shayne put on a confident expression and that made her laugh.
As Carley hurried to the hospital, she was alarmed to see several police cars outside. Upon inquiring, she discovered that they were searching for the suspects in a recent brawl.
Carley panicked at once. Wasn't that man involved in the brawl too?
Although that scoundrel had done unforgivable things to her, she still didn't want the father of her children to end up in jail.
She hurried to the inpatient ward, assuming that he must still be under observation after losing so much blood the previous day.
Yet, after she searched high and low, he was nowhere to be found.
Except for the VIP ward in the hospital which she did not have access to, she couldn't find him at all.
Oh, perhaps he had indeed left the hospital.
Just as she was about to breathe a sigh of relief, two policemen suddenly appeared in the hallway, looking like they were searching for someone.
"Isn't there another seriously injured person? He was the one who started the fight," one of the police officers said.
"Maybe he found out we were coming and ran away early?" another officer speculated.
"Keep looking!" the first officer ordered.
As she listened to their conversation, Carley couldn't help but imagine the man having a fight on the streets.
Her heart was pounding, her breathing quickened, and she felt like someone was choking her.
The sound of police sirens outside snapped her back to reality. If she didn't act now, it would be too late. For the sake of her children, she had to save that man!
As luck would have it, the man appeared at the stairway, on the verge of being caught by the police. He was none other than Lance.
She quickly took off her white coat and rushed towards him before covering his head with it.
In the whole Gludale City, perhaps only Carley dared to make such a move against Lance from behind.
Just as Lance was about to fight back, she suddenly spoke up, "Don't move! I'm saving you. If you make a sound now, you will definitely go to jail."
"You're a thug, no? Now, the police have come for you. You're the main offender in that brawl, aren't you? If you're locked up, it will be in for years! When the police leave later, you should flee as quickly as you can and never look back. Got it?"
