Elena Harper let out a groan as she turned off the alarm clock by her bedside.
"Dude, I need to sleep."
"I'm sorry," she mumbled to her roommate as she grabbed her toothbrush.
Reluctantly, she stood up, her eyes lazily scanning all her roommates still sleeping.
Seven sleeping peaceful souls. Why did she have to attend a private school?
She let out a final groan as she crawled towards the bathroom. Her eyes ran through the huge signage on the bathroom door. AMIGO.
She smiled.
Elena had been living at Amigo for as long as she could remember. Amigo was an orphanage. It was established decades ago by catholic sisters and had been active ever since. Elena hadn't really bothered about how she got to Amigo-her parents were probably dead or didn't want her like every other person at Amigo.
She lived at the female dorm at Amigo for teens. Amigo had different dorms- the ones for the kids and the ones for teens like her.
She loved Amigo. Probably because she had lived her whole life there or because it was just Amigo.
It was really big. Elena had gotten lost around a couple of times when she was younger but always ended up finding her way thanks to the Cathedral right in the middle.
"Good Morning," she said as she got back into the room.
"Hey, Elena."
"Hey."
"You up?"
"Lilyy, did you wear my trainers yesterday?" Elena asked, pulling out her trainers from her wardrobe. She had placed them on her wardrobe and met them inside instead. She had also tied the laces carefully, but they were now carelessly tied.
"Err... Nope."
False.
"Who said that?!" Elena yelled, almost jumping.
"Said what?"
"The false. I mean I heard someone say false," She replied.
"You gotta be hearing things, dude."
No, she wasn't.
"Really? Eh, okay then. Lily you wore my trainers yesterday, right?"
"I didn't."
False.
"Hey y'all!" she yelled, jumping. "Someone keeps on saying false. I'm not kidding this time. I definitely heard a voice."
Lily laughed, getting up from her bed. "It's just in your head. Fine I wore your trainers yesterday, happy? You don't need to act all weird."
True. The voice rang again.
It was crazy. How was it possible she was the only one hearing the voice. Still confused, she picked her hair band, tying her hair up into a ponytail. She looked at the 5ft5 image of her that had refused to grow taller since she clocked sixteen staring back at her from the mirror. She had warm ivory skin with long wavy brown hair with her eyes in a matching brown color. She straightened her stripped uniform skirt as she immediately grabbed her black flats and rushed out of the room.
She hurried downstairs to the dining, her eyes scanning the boys seated. She grunted out in dissatisfaction as she headed out.
"Luke!" Elena called out immediately she spotted him. She walked towards him. He was seated on her favourite chair at AMIGO garden.
"Hey, Amigo princess," he called out on spotting her. He waved, his dark hair getting blown by the wind, moving with his hands.
She rolled her eyes at the nickname. She was nicknamed 'Amigo Princess' since she could remember. Why? Cause ever since she was little she randomly got gifts from outsiders a lot. Thus, she was treated sort of special and even attended a private school, all courtesy of her mystery sponsor.
"Get your butt off my special chair," she scoffed, sitting beside him. "You weren't at the dining, fasting?"
"Wasn't hungry. I thought you went to school without telling me bye," he replied, pulling her cheeks.
True.
"Hey!" she yelled, smacking his hands away, ignoring the voice again. "I've warned you to stop pulling my cheeks and why? Must i? Must I always tell you bye before leaving?"
"The day you go anywhere without telling me 'bye' I'll murder you," he said and from his expression she knew he wasn't kidding.
"Of course," she replied, grinning as she leaned forward to hug him. "Bye!"
"I hate you, ugh," he scoffed, pulling away. "Go away."
False.
Elena laughed at him as she stood up to leave. Luke Williams, or Lucas Williams as he was almost never called was her best friend. Actually, her second best friend though he preferred to be called her 'first best friend' knowing fully well the numbers had nothing to do with his position in her heart. Almost 6ft tall, had neutral skin, dark hair and brown eyes- he was quite handsome and never failed to acknowledge it. He grew up in Amigo too making their friendship close to ten years old.
The school bus' horn greeted her as she got in. Indistinct chattering welcoming her from every corner of the bus. Only less than half of school went with the school bus and she happened to be part of the half though Dawson High school was just a 20mins walking distance from Amigo.
False.
False.
True.
True.
False.
False.
False.
True.
True.
False.
Elena pulled her hair as she groaned the hundredth time. She was definitely going crazy. The voices were in her head and it wasn't helping that she seemed like the only one hearing them. She could already feel eyes on her as she jumped every single time she heard the voice.
False.
She groaned again as she walked to one of the empty seats at the back. She buried her head in her lap, covering her ears with her backpack. She needed to stop hearing those voices.
"Hey, Elena," a voice said to her. She raised her head to meet Ivy standing in front of her. She sat beside her, Elena quickly putting on a smile.
"Oh ,Hi."
She smiled. "You good? You seemed disturbed."
"Nah, I'm good," she replied not too sure of herself.
"Okay then" she said bringing out a textbook. "I'll always be here if you want to talk."
True.
"Uh, Yeah, Sure, Thanks." Elena replied, uncomfortably as the voice rang in her head again.
Ivy Shane was gay and proud. Literally the whole school knew about it. She easily found her way around, plus her elder brother was popular and in his final year.
Elena smiled at her once before shutting her eyes.
The school bus came to an halt as student poured out. Elena hurried down too with Ivy awkwardly beside her.
"Elenaaaaa," her best friend, June Rivers, yelled on spotting her. She ran towards her, dragging her.
"What were you doing with that weird nerd?" she asked, stealing a glance from Ivy.
"First she's not a weird nerd," Elena replied her, almost laughing. "And second, she's my friend and she's cool at that.
"Whatever. Guess who I saw this morning?"
"Kim SeokJin?"
"Of course not," she said, hitting her head.
True.
Elena bit her lip. Of course, she didn't see SeokJin and that voice just had to ring in her head. True.
"Ah seriously!" Elena yelled out in frustration.
"What?"
"Actually June I... never mind. It's nothing."
Of course, she wouldn't believe it. It sounded too crazy to be true. She wasn't even sure what she was hearing was real.
"Who did you see?" she asked.
"Daniel Normann," She said in a singsong voice watching a blush creep up Elena's cheeks.
True.
Daniel Norman. Elena's crush since 8th grade. Popular, good looks, smart and best friends with the ace of the swimming team, Jordan Richardson.
"This is crazy!"
"What? Seeing Daniel is crazy?"
"No. Of course not," Elena replied, biting her already bruised lips. "Look I want to tell you something. I know it might sound really crazy but-"
"Later, okay?" She cut her off, looking at her wristwatch. "My class starts in less than 30 seconds."
True.
"Oh, yeah, okay."
Elena groaned again.
Bells rung signifying classes were over as she ran out of class. She panted heavily, her brain threatening to explode.
Class was hell. She couldn't concentrate thanks to the 'True' and 'False' that kept on ringing in her head. The teacher must have noticed the glare Elena gave her as everything that seemed to come out of her mouth attracted a 'True' from her head.
"June, I'm going crazyy," Elena whined as she spotted her. She walked over to her, hugging her.
"Aw love, Aren't you crazy?" she said, patting her head.
Elena just groaned again.
"Omg, wait a minute," she said, pulling away from Elena's grip."I see a particular someone."
She winked at Elena as she began walking towards Daniel.
Elena rolled her eyes, wondering what she had in mind. June was crazy and probably the most unpredictable person she knew. One minute she could be quietly reading a book in the library and the next she could be twerking in the hallways.
"Oh, i'm so sorry," June gushed as she purposely bumped into him. She bent over to pick his books as she winked at Elena, signalling to come over.
Elena looked around nervously as June signalled to her to come over. Her feet felt frozen aware of Daniel's gaze on her no thanks to June.
"Me?" she stuttered.
"Of course, you," Jesus, June was yelling. "I'm talking to you! Elena Harper! The prettiest Elena Harper this world has to offer!"
What were we saying on how unpredictable June was?
Elena walked sheepishly, aware of literally everyone in the hallway's gaze on her. She should have gotten used to her best friend's spontaneous behavior but it still surprised her sometimes.
"Hey."
"I'm so sorry," she said, again, handing over his books to him. "Are you new? I don't think I've seen you around."
False.
Elena laughed inside. June had known Daniel for close to 5 years now.
"Oh," he said, the tight corners of his lips curving into a smile. "I'm Daniel Norman."
June pulled Elena close to her. "Oh, Daniel! Nice name. Hello, Daniel. This is my pretty best friend, Elena Harper and i am June Rivers."
False.
Elena sat on her favourite chair at Amigo Garden right beside the waterfall. She picked the tiny pebbles around her throwing them into the waterfall, watching them drown. It had always been something that managed to take her mind off things temporarily. It was like watching her troubles drown with the stone.
Her backpack was still hugging her tightly as she was still in her uniform. The day's events kept on replaying in her mind.
"Elena," Luke called out walking over. He was still in the outfit from earlier- dark blue jeans and a grey t-shirt except that he now had a black hoodie on too.
She glanced at him as she sighed.
"I..."
"Shhh," she shushed him as she placed her finger on his lips. "Don't. Please just don't say anything."
He nodded as he slowly sat beside her. She mentally thanked him as she rested her head on his shoulder.
"I'm going crazy, Luke."
"I..."
"Not yet," she cut him off. "Don't say anything, yet."
He nodded again.
"I can trust you right?" she asked him looking at him straight in the eyes.
"No," he replied with a blank expression.
False.
"I hate you," she muttered as she punched him. She smiled at him as he returned the smile.
"So this might sound super weird..."
"Aren't you weird?"
"Shut it Luke," Elena scowled. Luke was resuming his bad habit of making serious things seem less serious. "I'm serious."
"Okay."
"Okay this is weird but since I woke up, like, I mean I don't even know how to explain it. Like I've been able to detect when people are saying the truth or not."
"Oh?"
"Yeah. Like there's the voice that rings into my head saying 'true' or 'false'. I mean its so crazy. This morning, i knew lily wore my trainers, and then at school, the teachers and then you, right now!"
Was she even making any sense? She doubted that.
"Were you served wine at that private school of yours?" he asked, chuckling.
"Really, Lucas!" Elena yelled. She almost never called him 'Lucas'. "I'm been really serious right now."
"Oh" he said, his face changing. "Serious? Serious??"
"Hell yeah!" she yelled. "And I'm on the verge of going crazy."
"No, no," he adjusted his sitting position. "Don't go crazy. I barely deal with the not crazy you."
"Oh, Luke."
"Um. So let's see," he continued, sitting up. "So you're saying you can tell if I'm telling the truth or not?"
"Yup."
"Let's see," he eyed her suspiciously. "I skipped school today."
False.
"FALSE."
"I got detention today."
True.
"TRUE."
"A girl kissed me today cause of my sexy lips."
False.
"Damn false," she laughed.
"I think you're beautiful."
True.
"True," Elena cooed. "You think I'm beautiful. How sweet."
"It's because you are, duh."
Luke stared at her suspiciously for a while. "No, those questions are too easy. Um, my middle name is Caleb."
False.
"False."
"No. That's still a easy question," he still wasn't convinced. "Um...my mum had long hair."
False.
"False."
"Oh My God, Elena this is insane" Luke squealed, shaking her. "This is soo coool."
"This is not cool."
"It is. Damn, you can tell when people are saying the truth or not," he said, Elena arching an eyebrow.
"It's not cool to know when people are lying. I mean we are humans, let's all lie when we want to. I don't want to be some stupid human truth detector."
Luke just laughed as she muttered 'idiot'.
"So yeah, you got the power," he finally said as she shrugged. "You're not planning on telling anyone right?"
"Should i?"
"If you want to be chained down while hundreds of scientists try to figure out what happened to your brain."
True.
"Or taken to the psychiatrist," she said laughing.
"Better," he said taking her phone from her backpack. He inputted her password as she rested her head on his shoulder again. "So how was school today?"
"You can imagine," Elena groaned. "You know the weirdest thing that happened?"
"No"
True.
"Duh," she said. "I almost spoke to Daniel today."
"Daniel Norman? You haven't given up on that crush on yours?" he said, laughing as she scowled. "So what happened?"
"Well, June walked up to him and long story cut short, she told him my name and hers."
"And..."
"My head rang false."
"That's impossible," he said, obviously surprised.
"I know right. And I seemed to have confirmed this stuff. it's seems really accurate."
"And your head rang false when she said you guys names?" he asked, his eyes glued to her phone's screen.
"Yes," she replied. "You know what? You say it."
He temporarily shifted his gaze from her phone's screen. "Fine. Your name is Elena Harper."
False.
"False."
He shifted. "My name is Lucas Williams."
True.
"True."
"The name of your best friend is June Rivers."
False.
"False. Again."
"Maybe it's because she's not actually your best friend," he had a mischievous grin. "Allow me rephrase. You attend the same school with June Rivers."
False.
"False."
"You know Lucas Williams."
True.
"True."
"You know June Rivers."
False.
"False, Luke. It's the same. It's still false."
The bell for dinner rung as an army of hungry girls rushed downstairs. Elena groaned the hundredth time as she reluctantly stood up from her bed.
She wasn't hungry. Food wasn't on her mind but she still had to go to the dining to avoid the nuns getting all stressed up.
Luke had finally totally believed her about my newly found gift. Of course, he just had to. Probably just like everyone else would have felt, he still considered it cool.
She still found her new 'gift' hard to believe but damn, it was real. So she was going to prepare to live her life now with the fact that she could tell if people were being truthful or not.
She sat at the dining, her mind constantly wavering. She was going to meet Luke again after dining to nag him. The familiar smell of roasted Turkey brought her back to the dining.
Roasted Turkey was made at Amigo not just for Christmas. It was a tradition for them to have roasted Turkey at dinner whenever it was someone's birthday.
"Happy Birthday," she said, hoping whoever was celebrating her birthday would reply.
"Thank you" a little girl replied, slightly blushing. She was cute, she had to admit.
Elena smiled in return as she made her way out of the dining. She wasn't going to force herself to eat, at least not yet.
"Elena, you aren't eating?" She heard a voice stop her as she turned to meet one of the nuns. Sister Juan.
"I'm not hungry," she said trying to sound as convincing.
"Tonight's food is very nice. I've had a taste,"she tried to persuade her.
False.
"I'm good," she replied, trying to keep the laughter in. Maybe this gift was going to be cool. She smirked as she made her way to Amigo garden.
"Lukeeee," Elena yelled, almost jumping at him. He looked surprised as he laughed, hugging her back.
It was getting dark at Amigo and the only thing that illuminated the environment were the light bulbs coupled with the moon. The wind was chilly, the trees shedding leaves as they shivered.
"You're weird."
"Guess what?" She asked pulling away from the hug.
"You finally passed maths?" He asked grinning.
Elena kicked him. "No, idiot. I finally think my gift might be cool."
"Great" he said with no enthusiasm. "Told ya."
"Yea, whatever," she said, turning to leave. "Well, good night."
"That's all?" He asked, his hands on his hips.
She shrugged. "Good Night."
"Get out."
She flipped her hair as she began walking in the direction of the girls' dorm.
"Hey!" he yelled.
"What?" Elena laughed as she turned to face him, hands on her waist. "What is it?"
"Come back here," he gestured with his hands. "Let's have a little chat."
She shook her head as she returned back to his side.
"So let's get this straight," he began as she sat down. "I get that you now have this power and all but there are going to be limitations."
"What nonsense are you spewing this time?"
"I want to lie and have you not figure out," he said, Elena laughing. "So with that being said, whenever you're around me you'll have to block your ears."
"And why should i do that?"
"Because i love lying to you."
False.
"False," she grinned. "Oh, oops."
"Elena-"
"Go to bed, Luke," she got up, laughing. "See you tomorrow."
He sighed as he watched her figure disappear, this time not calling her back until he was sure she wouldn't be able to hear even if he did.

Elena stepped out of the school bus as she sighed. She looked out for Ivy but didn't see her in the bus. She was probably there but just didn't see her.
"Ivy!" Elena yelled spotting her getting into class.
"Oh hey," she stopped as she walked over.
"I didn't see you in the bus, what's up?"
"Oh," she said, chucking lightly. "My dad offered to drop me off."
True.
"Oh okay," I said. "See ya."
She smiled as she turned heading to class. She trusted the voice now, she really did. Her smile weirdly almost disappeared immediately she saw June walking towards her.
She wasn't angry at her. She was confused. She didn't know what to feel. She shouldn't trust a stupid voice over her best friend, right? It was crazy but something just didn't feel right. It was crazier that June's name was wrong.
"Hey, Elena," she said, smiling as she walked towards her."What was that about yesterday?"
Oh, yesterday. She freaked out almost yelling when the voice in her head rung. She had left stumbling on words leaving both June and Daniel confused.
"My bad," she said almost whispering. "What did Daniel say?"
"Nothing actually. I guess he was just surprised."
"Oh okay," she said as an awkward silence fell between them. It was weird. They hardly ran out of what to say.
"Um, June," Elena started, trying to laugh. "Your name's June, right?"
June's expression was unreadable. "Eh? Of course, my name is June."
False.
"Oh."
"Of course," she laughed, nervously. "What sorta question is that?"
"Don't mind me," Elena joined in the nervous laughter. "Err, how old are you?"
"How dare you forget your best friend's age," she said, her hands on her chest dramatically. "Hey, what's with the weird questions."
"I know right," Elena ran her hands through her hair. "What am i even thinking, forget it."
She scoffed. "I'm seventeen, nut head."
False.
Shoot. Not again.
"Of course, I know," she said, faking a laugher as much as she could, her hands slapping her back.
"I'm off now. Got classes. See ya."
"Okay love," she said blowing her kisses as she hopped off to class.
Why was the voice messing with her head? First, June's name was wrong and then her age.
She couldn't be more confused.
~•~•~•
The library seemed like the only place she could go and still be sane. Less people, less voices ringing in her head.
She bit her pen as she stared at the maths in front of her. She should at least use the time to improve on her maths. Getting a 'B' wouldn't be so bad.
"You need a hand?" a voice asked behind her as she turned to see Daniel.
Holy shit.
"No," she stammered. "I'm good."
"Your book says otherwise" he said, picking up her notebook exposing her poor maths.
Elena ran her hands through her neck as a blush crept towards her cheeks.
He took a seat opposite her, sharing the same table. "We met yesterday."
"Yeah." A good first impression, wasn't it?
He chuckled. "You're cute."
Holy heavens. She was just called cute by her crush. Could she scream?
"I'm not usually this dumb," she said, awkwardly. "It's just maths."
"I'd love help you with that," he said as she managed to smile in return.
True.
She was sure she wouldn't survive this. His perfectly tanned skin matching perfectly with his dark brown eyes meeting hers occasionally. Focus!
Elena spent her afternoon in the library, Daniel teaching her maths. She tried her best to concentrate and not ask to many questions.
It felt nice. When they were done, he smiled at her and patted her head although that felt weird.
She stood up to leave, her phone immediately beeping.
She checked it to see a message from June.
Bestiee❤: Where the hell are you? Meet me at the cafeteria.
Elena smiled.
Elena: At the library, omw.
She slung her backpack over her shoulder as she headed out of the library. She needed to get to the bathroom first. Her face needed washing after blushing so much.
The bathroom door made no sound as she got in. She walked over to the mirror to look at herself. Her hands went to the knob only for her to stop. She heard a voice coming from one of the toilets. Someone was on the phone.
"Everything's going on smoothly. I am monitoring her."
True.
That was definitely June. She thought of giving her a scare but stopped, suddenly struck by what she heard.
"Elena, I mean Courtney, is fine. My eyes are on her. It's my job anyways and yes, she has no idea."
True.
