One late cold winter night,
bright neon lights flashed on both sides of the street and colored the white snow. Although various vehicles rushed through, it remained a quiet night.
In a KTV, a woman with lips as red as her cheeks reclined on a leather sofa. Her hooded eyes would draw every man in. A wine glass was trapped between her slender fingers. She was the very image of a beautiful angel.
Red lips pressed against the cool glass as she raised her head to drink up the wine. After she swallowed the liquor, she set down the glass and threw a few hundred dollars she pulled out of her purse on the tea table.
Without saying a single word, she walked out of the magnificent gate.
Feeling dizzy, she could only lean sideways against the door frame, hoping to take a break.
A Porsche cut through the cold wind and rumbled in the darkness of the quiet night. It stopped near her and then the door swung open. Confusion flashed through her eyes at the sight of the car and she couldn't help but shake her head. However, before she saw who the person was in the car, her lids grew heavier and slid to a shut. Darkness welcomed her before her body hit the cold ground.
Before she completely slid to the ground, a man in black suit hurriedly got off the car and rushed straight towards her. His arms wrapped around her slim body as he carried her into his car. Once he made sure she was secure in the seat next to him, he fired up the engine once again and head straight to a luxurious house.
"Who... Who are you? Where are you... taking me?"
Tabitha Mu desperately struggled to force her eyes open to get a good look at him but she failed. A sick feeling rose from the pit of her stomach as the haze in her head became even worse.
In his perfectly trim suit, coupled with his height and the way he held himself, he cut an undeniably arrogant profile.
Through the cotton that filled her head, Tabitha Mu could hear the vague sound of the engine dying before she was scooped up in his arms again. Before darkness fully claimed her consciousness, her final thought was that his chest was as wide and as solid as his father's.
Like that, the night passed over both of them.
Since Tabitha Mu was so tired, her consciousness didn't manage through the thick haze in her mind and she didn't get a clear look at the person using her body.
Warm sunlight pierced through the clouds to shine on Tabitha Mu's face, dragging her out of her nightmare. A painful headache immediately made itself known and every inch of her body seemed to ache.
As she forced her aching body to sit up, the quilt covering her body silently slipped down. Fear flashed through her once she registered her completely nude body and the dried blood staining the sheets.
'What happened last night?'
She thought to herself as fragments of fuzzy memories surged in her mind.
Damn it! She suddenly lost her chastity that she planned to gift her husband on their wedding night.
Tears welled in her eyes as she curled up into a ball and buried her face into her knees. More and more tears fell from her eyes like a string of pearls with a broken thread.
Thud! Thud! Thud! Three sharp raps against the door snapped her out of her thoughts.
As Tabitha Mu's tight hold on the quilt nearly tore a hole in it, a reserved voice echoed, "Miss Tabitha, are you awake?"
Blood nearly welled at her lower lip with how hard she was biting it, but she let out a shuddering breath before she spoke, "Who...
Who are you?"
Although it was a man's voice, she was sure that there was no way it was the man who took her chastity last night.
"I'm Mr. Boris' subordinate and he's waiting for you downstairs. Miss Tabitha, please change your clothes as soon as possible. Don't keep him waiting for too long."
"Mr. Boris... Who's that?"
"You'll know when you go downstairs." Since she had no other choice, Tabitha Mu put on the clothes laid out for her and walked out of the room. A row of exquisite wooden railings welcomed her, lifelike patterns engraved into the wood. Every inch of yard exuded an ancient and elegant aura.
It didn't take her long to spot a man under a tree with his back to her and talking to another man.
Stomp! Stomp! Stomp!
In order to see the man's face, she deliberately stepped harder than she had to. Sure enough, he turned around at the sound. An outstanding face greeted her, but her eyes focused on the strands of his too long hair falling over his brow.
Despite his fair face, the unfathomable coldness in his eyes sent chills down her spine. His thin lips pursed for a moment at the sight of her.
"Who are you?"
Tabitha Mu gathered all her courage to ask, although her clenched fists at her side trembled. Deep inside her, she couldn't help but feel like she knew him.
Even though she could barely remember it, there was no doubt that the man who bedded her last night felt just as cold as he did.
Without any shame, he didn't dodge the question nor did he entertain it. He gently opened his thin lips and said, "Boris Fu."
Undeniable charm filled his cold voice.
The painful throb in her head returned without any warning. Boris Fu!
Everyone in this city knew the name that was equal to a commercial brand.
An undeniable legend in the business circle, Boris Fu was a billionaire with great strength. All the citizens also knew of his cold nature.
Boris Mu was the boss of the Grand Hotel, who earned over a million dollars per minute. No way!
Could it be they merely had the same name? Or perhaps...
At the shocked expression on the woman's face, Boris Fu sneered, "Let's go."
"Go...? Where are we going?" In the face of such a powerful man, anxiety filled Tabitha Mu's nerves.
"Of course we're going to..." Boris Fu paused for a moment, and then turned to the gate. "The Civil Affairs Bureau."
At those words, Tabitha Mu suddenly stiffened.
Shocked wasn't nearly enough to describe what she was feeling.
Civil Affairs Bureau? She just graduated from high school. Was she going to marry a strange man?
What the hell?
As Boris Fu watched the various emotions dancing on the stunned woman's face, a sneer appeared on his face.
"Seems like you don't understand what happened... That's fine. Someone will tell you soon."
Before Tabitha could even catch her breath, a familiar figure ran towards her from a distance.
"Tabitha!" An out of breath middle-aged man ran into the gate, and quickly humbly bowed to Boris Fu when he caught sight of him.
With her eyes wide open, Tabitha called out to him in disbelief, "Dad?"
There was no doubt that it really was Tabitha's father, Andrew Mu.
"Why are you here?"
"Tabitha..." As soon as he was close enough to his daughter, Andrew Mu pounced on her and let out obviously fake sobs. "It's Dad's fault!"
An idea slowly formed in Tabitha's mind. "Dad, what's going on?"
Despite the throbbing in her head, she could also hear the loud pounding of her heart in her ears.
"I'm sorry, sweetie. It's all my fault. I'm not good enough. But I really had no choice..." Andrew Mu cried in a low voice.
As she deciphered what little Boris Fu said to her, Tabitha felt her heart sink like a stone thrown over a cliff.
"You really...
sold me." The last two words were spoken through her tightly gritted teeth.
Before Andrew could answer, a cold voice interrupted him.
A hint of mockery colored the voice.
"Yes, he sold you."
At those words, Tabitha could only stare in shock with her deathly pale face. Blood nearly beaded on her palms as she tightly clenched her hands into fists.
Of course. She should have known better than to hope for a peaceful and stable life with such a snobbish father.
Even though they barely had kinship ties, she didn't expect that he would really sell her.
Tabitha was framed by her father.
Last night was the most tragic time of her life, and yesterday was shaping up to be the most difficult day.
Andrew stuttered and tried to explain, "I'm sorry, Tabitha. I really needed money. If only..."
Although his tears dripped down his cheeks, not a shred of guilt could be found in his eyes.
Slowly, even her bright eyes gradually dimmed at the sight of her father.
Tabitha straightened her spine and slowly approached the imposing man. "I understand, let's go."
Perhaps leaving that family was the best choice, not only for her, but her father and stepmother too.
Boris lowered his head and glanced at the woman with a cold smile on his face. Then he walked forward.
In front of this powerful man, she could only be as insignificant as a grain of sand.
After all, she had a father like that.
It was natural that he would look down on her.
That was why Tabitha could only silently follow his every step.
Once they were close enough, the driver opened the car's door and she slid in. From the moment she sat down, she did nothing but silently lower her head.
"Do you regret it?" Boris glanced at her with a cold smile on his thin lips.
"Since I agreed to marry you, I won't go back on my word." Her unwavering answer made the man's brow rise in surprise.
"Good!"
Not another word left them until the car stopped and Tabitha immediately stepped out. Bright sunlight washed over her from above but the chilling wind felt like a thousand knives stabbing her.
Although she tried to hide within her clothes, the simple dress on her body offered little protection.
Fortunately, it was made of wool, so it wasn't too cold.
A man and a woman stood together in front of the Civil Affairs Bureau. While the man was cold as a statue chiseled from ice, the woman was as humble as dust. One look was all it would take to see how mismatched they were.
Naturally, many people turned to look at them.
At the feeling of stares piercing her, Tabitha lowered her head to look at the floor with a burning face.
Soon after, delicate handwriting was put on the booklet.
Two marriage certificates were handed to them, one for her and the other for Boris. They were now legally married.
When they settled back in the car, Boris said coldly, "Don't take it for granted that you're my legal wife. You aren't qualified."
'You aren't qualified.' Those three words felt like icicles stabbing directly into Tabitha's heart.
"Your role is to please my family and make them stop urging me to get married. That's all."
After saying that, he reached across her to open the door to chase her out, but she plucked up all her courage to grab his arm. "I want to... I want to go to school."
"Go to school?"
Boris repeated in confusion.
A beat passed, then an evil smile appeared on his face.
He leaned closer and whispered against her ear in a cold voice. "If you serve me well, maybe I'll consider it."
Once he pulled away, he threw a phone on her lap and said, "I already saved the numbers."
Afterwards, he grabbed her phone and threw it out the window.
"You can't..." Tabitha bit on her lip as she forced down her anger. "You can't act like that."
She married him. She was his wife, not his prisoner.
Since they should be equals, he had no right to interfere with her freedom.
"I'll show you what I can and cannot do tonight. Since it's our wedding night, remember to take a shower and wait for me to come back."
Soon after, the car finally stopped in front of a building. Boris got off the car and ordered the driver to send Tabitha home, his long legs carrying him into the building's huge golden gate without another word to her.
Inside the car, Tabitha remained frozen as the man's threat echoed in her ears. Fear filled her heart through the entire night.
However, he didn't come back and she remained alone the whole night.
Once morning arrived, she made herself breakfast and nibbled on her toast. It was impossible that he'd come in morning so it would be better for her to return to her own home.
As she tossed the idea around in her mind, it made more and more sense to her.
Much to her surprise, the driver did send her back when she asked.
For a moment, the sight of her own house made Tabitha feel strange.
Although her gut urged her to never step foot in her home again, she still had things she needed to figure out.
Despite her hesitation, she opened the door with her key and took her shoes off at the entrance, silently entering her home.
Pure white curtains blocked the bright sun while similarly white wallpaper with patterns decorated the walls. A comfortable light blue cot next to a wooden bedside table with a white vase on top completed the very image of a homely room.
However, all the white only made her headache worse.
In her opinion, no one in the world would like pure white, since it was the color of death, except those with mental problems.
A long sigh escaped her lips as she settled down on the bed, her hand absentmindedly reaching out to the vase and tracing it with the tips of her fingers.
Suddenly, a sharp voice broke the silence in the air. "Oh, why are you back?"
A tall figure greeted her sight when Tabitha slowly turned to look. With her hair coiled around her head and an apron wrapped around her waist, that woman looked like the very image of a typical housewife. Only the wrinkles in the corners of her eyes showed that she was in her forties.
This was Sherry Liu, the one who took her mother's place.
At the sight of the still healing hickey blooming on her neck, Sherry immediately walked up to Tabitha with a sneer. "You're so shameless. Look at you. What have you done this time? You're an embarrassment."
Every word came out shrill and frightening.
Instead of answering, Tabitha kept her gaze trained down on the floor.
However, her silence seemed to just fan the flames of Sherry's anger. Rough fingers grabbed her hair as Sherry spat at her, "You bitch, you're as cheap as your mother. Going out just to commit adultery. You and your mother are the disgrace of our family."
Sharp pain bloomed in her scalp along with her pounding headache, but Tabitha only took a deep breath and gritted her teeth.
"You can't even defend yourself, can you? How is a bitch like you even in our family?"
As much as Tabitha wanted to fight back, a dark shadow lingering by the door immediately shot down that idea.
"Sherry, what are you doing?"
At the sound of the voice, Sherry's face immediately changed. She released Tabitha's hair and approached the man with a smile.
"Andrew, we have to take responsibility for your daughter's bad behavior."
Even though a strange expression crossed his face at the sight of his daughter, Andrew still turned and left without saying a word, Sherry at his heels.
A cold light flashed through Tabitha's eyes as she watched the two figures leave.
Bang! Tabitha quickly slammed the door shut and feebly leaned against it, feeling like all her strength had been sucked out.
Today, she came back to see a shameless couple putting on an act.
Although it was vague, she could hear Andrew's voice from the outside saying, "Only she can help me!"
Cries and sobs from the woman followed his words.
Desperate for more information, Tabitha pressed her ear against the cool wood of the door.
Unintelligible angry grumbles came from the outside, but soon Andrew deliberately lowered his voice. "Keep your voice down!"
"Why should I?! Am I not telling the truth? Don't forget that bitch..." More noises came from the woman but none of that Tabitha could understand. Right as she held her breath to continue listening, the door was pushed open.
Since she was leaning against the door, Tabitha was forced to stagger forward. When she steadied herself and raised her head, her eyes honed in on the shocked expression on Andrew's face.
"Dad... Dad." A flush of embarrassment was crawling up her face but she reacted quickly.
"You... How much did you hear?" A false of calm filled Andrew's voice.
"Not much."
Tabitha nibbled at her lip.
How could this father believe his daughter's answer? For a long moment, he did nothing but hold her gaze, and then he slowly turned around. "You can leave now."
After a moment of silence, he continued, "Your stepmother doesn't want to see you. Now that you're married to Boris, you'll have a happy future."
Married? Happiness?
Did she even want to marry him? Those two words felt like a big joke to Tabitha.
He sold her to that man. Even if she appeared to be Boris' wife, did she even have a place in his heart?
Everything was decided before she realized it. Instead of everything she wanted to say, what came out of her mouth was, "Dad, I hope you won't regret it."
"Boris is a fickle man. Be careful when you're with him."
It sounded like a father's advice to his daughter.
"If you offend him and affect your stepmother and me, you'll never be allowed to step foot in this house ever again."
Was that a threat?
All he was telling her was to please Boris, that arrogant man.
Otherwise, Andrew would break off their relationship with each other.
A light and quiet smile pulled at Tabitha's lips.
For his mistress, her father lost all of his humanity.
Without another word, she packed up her luggage. When she passed through the living room, the sight of Andrew sleeping on the sofa, while Sherry watched TV with melon seeds in her hands greeted her eyes.
It was a warm and gentle scene that should have belonged to her mother, but was stolen by this woman.
Aside from a quick glance, Sherry completely ignored her existence and focused on the TV.
Unable to muster a smile through all the anger she was suppressing, Tabitha could only speak softly, "I hope this kind of life will always be with you."
Of course, Sherry knew what she meant.
A thick haze settled in Tabitha's mind as she walked out of the house that she lived in for more than ten years. For a moment, she merely stood at a crossroad with her suitcase in her hand.
Suddenly, the phone she received from Boris rang in her pocket.
"Hello. Is this Mrs. Tabitha?" From the name on the ID, she knew it was Daniel Li, the driver of the Fu family.
"Mrs. Tabitha, I went to pick you up just now, but you weren't there. Where can I find you?"
"I'm in..." Despite her hesitation, she still told him where she was. If she didn't go back to the Fu family, where could she possibly go?
After all, she was now Boris' wife.
