Late night calls, it was the last thing that someone wanted to receive especially if you are a Mexican and you are not leaving there but more than a hundred miles away.
The only set of people that can make late night calls are the most important people in the life of an individual; the first people that an individual associates with before moving out to the world- familia.
That was why Bella was really alarmed and worried when she was woken up by the ringing of her phone at midnight.
"Tio Philip" she called when the call was connected.
"Bell, you need to come home tomorrow, it is very urgent" was the reply of Bella's uncle.
"What is going on uncle?" She asked but he just told her to obey him and ended the call.
Bella kept the phone back on the table close to her bed and started thinking about the call.
"Why did Tio Philip call me this late?.What could have happened?" Bella thought but she couldn't come up with anything.
She got up and went to her kitchen and drank some water hoping it would calm her down.
It didn't help though so she then walked back to her room and sat on the bed, a quick glance at the calendar on her table rang something in her mind.
"Yeah that's right, tomorrow is the court hearing" she thought.
"That must be why he was coming towards me, gosh he should have said so," Bella muttered.
She then took a deep breath and took her phone from the table, she booked a flight and slept off.
The next morning she woke up by 5:00 am and started packing her clothes.
By 7:00 am she was already ready and she came out of her room with her bags.
"Going somewhere Ella?" her landlady who was coming to her room asked.
"Yeah, there is something going on at home," she replied.
"Okay, take care of yourself, I wanted to ask you something but I guess it will wait" the landlady said and hugged her.
"Thank you ma" Bella replied.
They broke up the hug and she dragged her bag downstairs and entered a cab to the airport.
Bella's flight was leaving at 8:30 and she arrived at the airport at half past seven. She had to wait for another hour and then boarded the plane.
It was then that she remembered she didn't tell her friend Riley that she was travelling.
"Shit, I will call her when we land" she thought then proceeded to switch off all her gadgets.
After a five hour flight the flight finally landed in Mexico city and the passengers boarded out of the plane.
Bella went to the baggage reclaim immediately and took her bags.
She came out of the airport and boarded a cab straight to her family house.
It was on her way home that she then called her best friend Riley, "oh my goodness, I wish that I saw you before you go" Riley said.
"It is fine, Rile, I will be back soon in no time" Bella replied.
"New York won't be the same without you, Ella. Anywhere I will just hang on till you come back, love you".
"Love you too, another call is coming I am going to hang up" she said and ended the call.
She then answered the other call, "hello Tio Philip"
"Are you in Mexico now?" He asked and she told him yes that she was on her way.
"Be fast, everybody is waiting for you" her uncle said and ended the call.
"Everybody is waiting for me?, this has never happened before," she thought.
After a thirty minute drive, the cab arrived at her family house and she got out and dragged her bags in.
Their house was strangely quiet when she walked in, there was no sign of the puppies which were owned by her mother.
She had a weird feeling but she shook it out and walked into the entrance door.
"Oh, sweet Bella !" a woman in her sixties exclaimed and hugged her when she entered the house.
"Señora Conti, I missed you so much," Bella replied and hugged her tighter.
Señora Conti was the head maid in the house and was very fond of Gemma.
They heard footsteps and then broke the hug, "Tio Philip" Ella said and walked towards her uncle.
He reached him and hugged him and he hugged her back.
"Sobrina, I hope that your flight was great" Tio Philip asked.
"It was fine," she replied.
He then released her and looked at her, "how about New York?.
"New York is fine too, what is going on, Tio?"
"Come, you will find out later" he replied and led her to the living room.
Bella was expecting to see her lovely parents in the living room but she was disappointed.
She was greeted by her cousins and her other family members when they entered the living room.
"Sit down, Bell" Tio Philip ordered and she sat down.
He sat down too and began, "we called you here because of something important, Bell".
"Before we start discussing that, where is mamá and papa?" Bella asked.
"You need to listen to me first..."
"No, anything that you want to say to me must be heard by every member of the family but mamá and papá are not here. That is a total disrespect to them and..."
"Your mamá and papá are dead!" Tio Philip snapped.
Have you ever been in a situation where you heard something but you are just wishing that you heard that wrong.
That was exactly how Bella felt when she heard her uncle say those words.
She looked around trying to read the expressions of the people sitting in the living room.
"They must be pulling a prank at me, yeah it is expensive but I want it to be a prank" she thought but her uncle then said something that shattered her heart into pieces.
"They died in a fire accident yesterday, they were at the old residence to check something and the building caught fire and killed them" Uncle Philip finished.
Bella' raced, "fire?, dead?" echoes in her mind and she stood up and fell on the floor.
"Bell" her uncle called and rushed to her, he carried her into the car and drove straight to the nearest hospital.
She was admitted into the hospital immediately and the doctors started attending to her.
Her uncle was sitting in the lobby when the doctor came out after attending to Bella.
"How is she doctor?" Uncle Philip stood up and went closer to the doctor.
"She is perfectly fine, she fainted due to shock" the doctor replied assuring him.
He then heaved a sigh of relief and asked if he could see her, "she is sleeping now so that won't be possible, but don't worry she will be awake in a few hours" the doctor replied.
"Muchas gracias, doctor" Uncle Phillip said.
"Just doing my job, señor," the doctor replied and walked away.
Uncle Philip then sat down back on the bed and his phone rang, he answered it and it was his wife wanting to know how Bella was.
"She is fine, she fainted because of shock," he replied.
"Okay, that's good news, please take care of her," she said and hung up.
In the night, Bella woke up and was surprised to see herself in the hospital.
"What happened and why am I here?" She thought and got out of the bed.
She removed the IV drip from her hand and walked towards the door.
Reaching there, she quietly opened the door and went out, she then followed her right and bumped into uncle Philip.
"Tio..."
"You should be resting, where are you going?" He asked.
Bella couldn't talk so he led back into the room and she laid back back on the bed.
"How are you feeling?" He asked and sat down on the chair beside the bed.
"Fine, but I just had a very terrible dream," Bella replied.
"It wasn't a dream bell, all the things that you saw were all real, your parents are dead" uncle Philip finished.
"No, no, no, no, that is not possible, mamá and papá can't be dead. They are probably waiting for me at home so let's go home" Bella was frantically shaking her head as she said it.
"Bella, you have to.."
Uncle Philip was interrupted as she started crying loudly.
He went closer to her and started consoling her and saying comforting words to her.
The next morning, Bella was discharged from the hospital and she walked spiritless out of the hospital into her uncle's car.
Her uncle then entered the driver's seat and drove the car away. After crying yesterday Bella has been so quiet and wasn't talking to anybody.
Uncle Philip had tried to cheer her up but it didn't work at all so he just left her alone.
The drive to their house was slow and gloomy, when they pulled up in their garage.
Bella got out of the car immediately and rushed into the house.
She wanted to be sure that what her uncle was saying was true, so when she was in the house she went straight to her parents' room.
The first thing she noticed when she entered the room was the bed, it was perfectly made which means that no one slept on it last night.
Bella's heart squeezed in pain as she began believing the bitter truth about her parents.
All through the days coming, the Rossi family which was Bella's family were busy planning the burial ceremony of the most elderly people in their family.
It was hard for her to believe that her lovely parents are gone, it was so hard.
"Miss Bella" someone called, jolting her out of her thoughts.
"What did you think about the entrance decorations?" The person who was one of the decorators asked.
Bella looked at the picture he was showing her, "what is the point of decorating the entrance door?, it is not like I would bring them back !" She wanted to scream.
"Yeah it is good" she said instead.
Okay ma" the decorator replied and left.
Bella just stood up from where she was sitting and went into the kitchen.
She poured a glass of milk for herself and started stirring it with a spoon.
"You should leave the poor milk alone, it doesn't deserve you stirring it like that," her uncle's wife, Patricia, said as she entered the kitchen.
Bella then realised that she had been stirring the milk too long, she then took the cup and drank the milk.
"Easy Bell or you will choke, by the way how are you feeling?" she asked.
Bella wanted to burst into tears and tell her that she wasn't fine but her inner voice told her not to.
"I am fine, Aunt Pat, thanks for asking" she replied instead.
"Okay then, you better go to the living room, you are wanted there" Patricia said.
Bella thanked her for the information and left the living room, Patricia stared at her retreating figure with a smile that turned into a smirk.
In the living room, her uncle was sitting with some men dressed in suits when Bella came out.
"Bell, these are some of the shareholders in your father's company" Uncle Philip said referring to the men.
"Good day, Sirs" Bella greeted the men.
She greeted them in English because they looked like foreigners.
They all acknowledged her greeting and told her to take heart that everything will be okay.
Bella thanked them and sat down on one of the couches there. With tears all over her face.
"We are truly sorry for your loss, Miss Rossi and Mr Rossi" one of the men who looked like an Asian began.
"Clearly the world has just lost two beautiful people that are so good, Miss Rossi, your parents were wonderful people," he continued.
Bella was wondering where the conversation was going because she knew they didn't come for just a condolence visit.
"How are you planning on taking over your father's company?" The man asked
"I have no interest in the company, Tio Phillip can manage it" Bella replied.
All of the men in the room exchanged glances with one another, they didn't believe that she didn't want to manage the company.
"Ehm, Bell you have to sign some documents so that I can start managing the company" Uncle Philip said.
"That will after the burial Toi" Bella replied and stood up from the couch.
"I have to be somewhere now" she added and left the living room.
She went to her room and flopped onto her bed and slept. She woke up later in the evening and ate an early dinner.
"The salad doesn't taste great," Bella said to the head maid.
"I didn't add the signature sauce" Mrs Conti, the head maid replied.
"Why?" Bella asked.
"I am really sorry miss Bella, I forgot to add it" she apologised.
"It is fine but please don't forget again" Bella said.
"I won't," the head maid replied.
Bella finished her food and went back to her room and slept off again, since she came back sleeping was now her hobby.
On the day of the burial, all their family members and some close friends went to their family cemetery.
"May their soul rest in peace" the priest finished the prayer.
The coffins were lowered down and sand was poured on it, Bella's parents were buried beside each other.
It was a tradition in Mexico to bury couples that died together beside each other.
After the grave was closed, the Rossi family members went and placed a flower each on the graves.
Bella was the last person that went, she stood there for a minute after dropping her flower.
The tears were flowing uncontrollably and she didn't make an effort to stop it.
Her uncle came and led her away from the grave and walked out of the cemetery.
"Take heart, Bell it is going to be okay" he consoled her.
"Tio Phillip, but why did they have to die at the same time?" She asked.
"You shouldn't question God, he knows the better way for us. Just take heart" her uncle replied.
When the burial was over they went back to the house to attend to the people that came to console them.
The people that came to sympathise with them were given a gift each and they then went back to their house.
It was after everybody had left and some of her family members were retiring for the night that Bella went to her room.
She took out her phone which she had kept inside the cupboard since she came back from the hospital.
She turned it on and a load of messages entered and they were all from her best friend, Riley.
"She must be worried about me," Bella thought.
"Let me call her now", she called her number and Riley answered on the second ring.
"Oh my goodness, Bella what happened to you?. Your phone was switched off and you were not online" she could sense the worry from her voice and she felt guilty.
"I am so sorry, Riley but something happened," Bella replied.
"What happened?"
"My parents are dead, they died in a fire accident" she replied and Riley screamed.
"Gosh, Bella I am so sorry" Riley said while crying.
"It is fine, I know that it will be very hard for me but I will overcome it" she said trying not to cry.
Hearing Riley crying was making her cry too, "I am sorry Riley but I have to hang up now".
"It is okay, take care of yourself, Bella," Riley replied.
"Thanks, I will," Bella said and hung up the call.
She dropped the phone on the bed and laid down and placed her head on the pillow and cried.
She slept around three in the evening and woke up the be,t morning with a pounding headache.
An aspirin was shoved into her mouth and she went out of the room, her family members were at the dining table and so she went there.
"Good morning, everyone" she greeted and sat on her seat.
She saw that her uncle and his wife were now sitting on her parents' seat.
"How are you feeling, Bell?" Uncle Philip asked.
"I am fine," she replied.
"Kids, ever since Bella came back, I haven't seen you guys asking her how she was," he said to his four children who were also in the dining room.
"She is fine, that's why we didn't ask her" Steve, her eldest son replied.
"Shut up you fool !" His father yelled at him.
"He is right Tio so don't yell at him" Bella said.
Uncle Philip took a deep breath and continued eating his food.
After they were done eating, Bella was asked to come to the garden by her uncle.
She went there and her uncle gave her a document to sign, "what is this, Tio?" She asked.
"The document that says that I will be one to manage the company" he replied, smiling at her.
Bella then remembered the promise she made so she took the document and signed it.
"You made the right decision, Bella, your parents will be very proud of you" her uncle said.
She just smiled and walked out of the garden, she went to the living room where she saw someone that she wasn't expecting.
"Riley?"
Riley turned from one of the maids that she was talking to and ran to her.
Reaching her, she hugged her tightly and Bella felt that she would squeeze life out of her.
"What are you doing here?" Bella asked when she finally broke the hug.
"I am here to comfort my best friend," Riley replied, looking so proud.
Bella held her hand and led her towards the room to discuss better there.
