Selene Carter lost her parents at a young age when they were killed by rogue wolves. Now she is attending the Moon Ceremony but she is the only one who hasn't shifted.
The elites were taunting her.
"You are as worthless as your parents were." An Alpha said.
She tried to hold her tears inside and successfully did so. Meanwhile, the other Omegas were shifting into their full forms.
**
The past.
Selene was in her boyfriend Caleb's bedroom. His parents were gone for the weekend. So, they had the whole house to themselves.
Selene and Caleb were on the bed snuggling against each other's necks. They kissed softly and Caleb slowly undressed Selene by removing a strap of her T-shirt.
He kissed her shoulder. Selene whimpered at his touch. That was the night she was to lose her virginity.
"I'm not sure what I'm doing." Caleb laughed. He was a virgin too.
Selene chuckled. "Let's find out together."
She removed his T-shirt revealing his chiseled chest. She ran her fingers across it. Caleb then removed her T-shirt and she was braless, so he kissed her breast.
Both of them started fully undressing each other while kissing passionately.
"Are you sure you want this?" Caleb asked her.
"Yes." She replied. "More than anything."
She let out a passionate cry as Caleb entered her. He thrusted gently and the bed rocked underneath their weight.
When they were done, they cuddled next to each other. Selene didn't want that moment to ever end.
But she didn't realize the horrendousness of what was about to happen next.
Selene came home to a brutal scene. Her parents were dismembered head to toe. At only sixteen-years-old she let out a cry that could have rivaled an Alpha's.
**
The present.
While the others are transforming, Selene notices a strange set of eyes watching her from afar in the woods.
She wanted to run away but she knew she would be taunted even more if she left the Moon Ceremony earlier than everyone else.
She waited for it to be over.
"How are you holding up, Selene?" Caleb asked her.
They were friends since childhood. Selene always thought Caleb would end up her mate. But Olivia was chosen for him instead.
Selene sighed. "I'm doing my best. I miss my parents so much, Caleb."
She couldn't hold the tears back any longer. She let them out and rested her head on Caleb's shoulder.
"Get off him!" A blonde girl yelled.
She pushed Selene off of Caleb. Selene hit the ground on her bottom.
"I'm sorry." Selene said wiping her tears with her cuff.
Olivia put her arms around Caleb's shoulders. "Serves you right, bitch."
"Now, now girls. Behave." Alpha Warren entered the scene.
Selene stood up wiping dirt off of her clothes.
"I better go." Selene said now fully composed.
With that, she left the finished Moon Ceremony. She was the only one who didn't shift that night. Maybe it was the loss of her parents which didn't trigger the factor within her?
**
Selene had her backpack strapped to her as she walked back to her empty apartment.
I'm so alone, she thought. Even Caleb has Olivia.
She still had thoughts of Caleb and her at night when she was asleep. How his body would feel against hers. How their lips would touch in a romantic fusion.
Whoosh.
She heard something and stopped in her tracks. There was definitely somebody close. Whatever it was. It was not human.
The night was dark and the moon hardly shone. And most of the streetlights weren't working. Selene saw something in the hedges nearby. She turned on the flashlight of her phone.
"Come out!" She called. "I'm not afraid of you."
Red eyes shone through the edge. It was definitely a wolf. Or a vampire?
The stranger leapt from the volume of grass they were hiding in. It was a rogue werewolf. Like one that had killed her parents. He leapt on to her.
Selene saw its claws flash in the moonlight. She was covering her face though she knew it would be to no avail. She suddenly heard a cry but surprisingly it wasn't from her own mouth. The rogue wolf fell away from her, on its back, onto the pavement.
A mysterious figure was standing just inches away from Selene and the dead rogue. It was a werewolf Selene had never seen before. It transformed back to its human form. Then she realized he was the most handsome man she had ever seen.
He had long locks of jet-black hair. When he smiled his dimples clearly showed. He was wearing a blue suit but his muscles bulged from underneath. Selene felt an instant attraction to him.
"Mine." The stranger said.
Their eyes meet and the mate bond falls into place. Selene's heart starts pounding. She manages to get up and run away.
**
The next day Selene is busy at work in her college's cafeteria. She was a literature student but due to her parents' deaths she had to work alongside her studies.
"I'm sorry about last night." It was Caleb.
She handed him his usual food and drink. "It's okay."
"No, it's not." Caleb protested. "I know Olivia is my mate but she shouldn't act that way with you."
"She's just jealous, Caleb." Selene said and gave him a warm smile. "You and I were supposed to be mates."
Caleb sighed. "Maybe that would've been for the best."
They both locked eyes with each other. But weirdly Selene did not feel the same way she did as before. It was like her heart belonged to somebody else.
"One latte please." Someone new entered the café as soon as Caleb had left.
"Sure thing." Selene said without even looking at the new customer.
She turned around to fill a cup but sensed the stranger's eyes digging into her soul.
Slowly, she turned her head around.
It was the stranger who had saved her last night. He was dressed differently with a white T-shirt and tight jeans. Selene could not help scanning him from head to toe. She felt a lump in her throat.
"Diana!" Selene called her co-worker. "Give this man a latte. I'll be right back."
She went into the kitchen taking off her apron and hanging it on a stand. Her heart seemed to be pounding out of her chest. This new werewolf, was surely an Alpha, given his charisma and age. Usually, werewolves mated with similarly aged werewolves. But this Alpha had mated with her.
She started crying. I can't accept this bond.
She fell to her knees and let out a howl. Luckily, there was no one in the kitchen at that time to have heard her scream.
She rejected the Alpha's bond. She wasn't strong enough. She had not even transformed at the Moon Ceremony. She knew she was too weak to accept his love.
Outside the kitchen, the Alpha felt a ping at his heart. He put a hand to his chest. He knew he had been rejected.
But why? He thought. No, she will be mine.
Selene was done for the day. She strapped on her backpack and was leaving the college grounds when the Alpha appeared out of nowhere.
"Selene!" He called.
She tried to ignore him but knew it would be to no avail.
"Yes?" She asked.
"Why did you reject me?"
"I don't even know your name."
The Alpha smiled. "It's Ronan Blackthorne."
He extended a hand. Selene hesitated. But finally shook it.
There was a sexual tension between them. His hand was rough and gentle at the same time. Selene wondered what it would like to be-
"And you are Selene Carter, yes?" He asked and shifted her back to reality.
"Y-yes." She stammered.
There was something magnetic about him. Even though Selene had rejected the bond, she still felt a high attraction for him.
"Listen. We will talk about the rejection later. You will be mine eventually." He explained. "I need to tell you something."
"What is it?"
"Not here. Meet me at Apollo Park at six in the evening."
**
She tried her best not to dress too nicely. She didn't want to give away any hints about her attraction to Ronan. She was wearing a black skirt and had black make-up on as well. She passed the time by twirling a strand of her hair.
Ronan appeared out of nowhere again. "Selene, I am so glad you are here."
"What is it, Ronan?" Selene felt impatient. "What is it you want to tell me?"
Ronan sighed. "It's about your parents."
"What about them?"
"They weren't murdered by rogues." He told her. "But by someone in your pack."
**
It's nine-o-clock and Selena is at the pack meeting. Everyone is celebrating as the Moon Ceremony was successfully.
Selene felt that she was in the background of everything happening around her. She couldn't shake Ronan's words: But by someone in your pack.
Who could it be? She wondered.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Alpha Warren asked.
He had a friendly smile on his face.
"It's nothing, Sir." She couldn't even look at him. What if he murdered my parents?
The wolves started howling even in their human state. Caleb was in the center of it. Everyone was yelling him to chug the canister of beer. He successfully did so and got French-kissed by Olivia as a reward.
Selene.
She heard Ronan's voice but it wasn't a recollection. He was actually talking to her by a psychic link.
Ronan, is that you?
Yes, Selene. I told you we are meant to be together. That's why we are psychically linked.
She kept her attention to what was happening in front of her. Caleb and Joseph started a friendly brawl. They were wrestling and who would land on the ground first would be the one to lose.
Selene was about to message Ronan back with her mind when someone interrupted her thoughts.
"You better stay away from him." It was Olivia, mean-spirited as usual.
You rejected me because you think you are worthless. And can't transform. But that isn't true. On the next full moon. You will awaken. Ronan told her.
"And if I don't?" Selene didn't realize she had just spoken such harsh words.
She was usually non-violent, but she was aching for a fight then.
Olivia's eyes turned red. She shoved Selene and Selene flew into the barn nearby. Even without fully transforming, Olivia was very strong.
Everybody stopped what they were doing to watch the girl fight.
Selene got up, there was a crack in the wall of the barn where her body had entered. She felt her eyes turn red but still couldn't transform into her werewolf form. She had to be careful. Olivia could transform at will.
Selena and Olivia were about to clash again when Caleb stepped in between them.
"Please stop." Caleb pleaded raising hands at them. "We are supposed to be a pack."
"Caleb is right" Alpha Warren said with his hands behind his back. "Today's meeting is adjourned."
**
Selene was tossing and turning in bed that night. She couldn't forget what Ronan had told her at the park.
She started having visions. She entered the house two years ago. There was blood smeared all over the place: the furniture, the walls.
"Mom, Dad!?" Selene called out but no one replied.
Then she stepped into something and heard a splash. It was one of the limbs of her parents. She stepped back and got knocked out from behind. Before fully passing out, she saw a familiar figure but she could only make out half of a face.
**
The next day.
Selene's phone rang. It was Caleb.
"Selene!" He practically screamed into the mic.
"Yes, Caleb. What is it?" She asked with concern.
"Come to House 103, Nancy Street, quickly."
It was a Saturday so college was off. Selene had to Uber a ride as Nancy Street was far away from her apartment and she didn't own any vehicle.
She paid the driver then proceeded to House 103. She saw Caleb and Alpha Warren outside the front door, waiting for her.
"Yes?" She asked them.
Both of them had solemn looks on their faces.
"It's Olivia." Alpha Warren said. "She's been murdered."
Caleb started crying and Warren patted him on the back. They led her inside and the scene was similar to that of her parents' murder.
The walls were blood-soaked and the furniture was all a mess. There was a sign of a struggle. Olivia didn't give up easily.
They entered the first bedroom and saw it in tatters as well. On the bed was Olivia. Dead.
"Looks like a rogue werewolf did this." Alpha Warren announced.
Don't trust them, Ronan said with his psychic link. This was no rogue werewolf.
Selene didn't leave her apartment at all later that day. She could not help comparing Olivia's murder to that of her parents.
She still remembered both the crime scenes. Blood on the walls. The furniture all torn apart. It was aching her heart that Ronan wasn't here with her. But that was her choice. She rejected him because she thought of herself as weak. Ronan said that she wasn't and would transform at the next full moon.
The bell rang. She answered the door hoping it would be Ronan.
It was Caleb.
They exchanged greetings and he entered the apartment. It seemed like it hadn't been cleaned for days. Which wasn't alarming with everything that was going on around Selene.
"I miss her." Caleb said.
Selene hugged him. "As bad as she was, she didn't deserve to be killed."
Caleb hugged her back. He suddenly but gently took ahold of her face.
He kissed her. Selene felt the warmth coursing through her body. But she didn't return the kiss.
She got away from his embrace.
"I'm sorry. This is too soon. You just lost Olivia." Selene told Caleb without even looking at him.
"But we can be together now." Caleb said.
She glanced at him. "It's complicated."
Caleb frowned. "Is there someone else?"
She looked at the ground, afraid to meet his gaze.
Caleb was angry now. He gnashed his teeth together. He took ahold of Selene's shoulders and pushed her up against a wall.
"Tell me his name!" He growled with his fangs out and red eyes glowing.
"I-it's R-Ronan." She started crying.
Caleb transformed back. He let go of her and without saying another word, exited the apartment.
Selene had her face in her hands. She was crying and yearning for Ronan's touch. Ronan was right. She wasn't weak. She just needed support.
Evening turned into night. Selene was back in bed.
Ronan?
Yes, my dear?
I feel so alone. Can you come here?
Not now. I'm investigating. But I can be with you in spirit.
She suddenly fell into a vision. She was seated at a fancy restaurant's dinner table. She looked at herself. She was dressed in an elegant gown, fit for a princess. She looked in front of her. Ronan was wearing the same blue suit the night he saved her.
He reached out and took her hand in his. It was hard and gentle at the same time.
He kissed her on the hand, his lips making her tremble. Selene knew she was actually in bed but she felt like she was at that table.
The scene shifted.
She and Ronan were at a forest. The sun was shining through the vast trees. The smell of flowers made the scene the more majestic.
Ronan cupped her chin. They looked into each other's eyes. They kissed. Both of their eyes turned red. Sexual tension was in the air. Ronan touched the small of her back. She whimpered. She wanted him inside of her. Just when things were about to get even spicier her mobile phone rang.
She woke up. It was an urgent message. There was a midnight meeting for the members of her pack.
**
She had dressed hurriedly and her hair was all in tangles. But she had made it. The meeting had begun. All of her pack members from the Betas and Omegas to the Alphas were there.
"We need to begin the search for this rogue werewolf." Alpha Brandon declared.
Everyone started agreeing in unison.
"I am sure it is the same rogue that killed Selene Carter's parents." Alpha Warren announced.
Most of them agreed. Selene nodded her head but did not forget Ronan's warning.
After the meeting was adjourned, Selene retreated to the barn to meet the Beta healer Anna. She was an old werewolf who had never transitioned to Omega.
"What can I help you with, dear?" Anna asked Selene.
"it's my back." Selene told her. "Olivia pushed me into the barn the other night and it's still soar."
Anna chuckled. "So that's why there's a crack in the barn. Take off your shirt. Let's take a look at it."
They were all alone so Selene could undress herself. She did as she was told. Beta Anna took a look at her back and it was red all over. She opened up one of her healing creams and gently massaged it over Selene's back.
"I have something to tell you, dear." Beta Anna said as she was massaging Selene.
"What is it?"
"Your mother was not just any werewolf. She descended from a line of ancient werewolves." Anna explained.
Selene turned around to face her. "Is this true?"
"Yes. Only a few werewolves know of this. As I was close to your mother, she told me about her bloodline. You are a continuation of it, my dear."
"Is this why she and Father were killed?" Selene asked putting her shirt back on.
"That's all I know. I'm afraid."
**
Selene was back at the crime scene. Most of the damage had been cleared. The place looked restored and her pack had taken Olivia's body away.
What is that? Selene thought as she saw a trinket on Olivia's bedside table.
She touched it and her eyes rolled up inside her head. She started having visions. She was taken to the stone age. Someone was making a mark on a cave wall. Selene recognized it. It was the symbol of her mother's pack before she was accepted into her father's clan which was her own current pack.
The symbol was being made by blood but one female werewolf. After the symbol was completed, the woman turned around, raised a finger to her lips and went, Shhhh.
Selene came out of the vision and dropped the trinket to the floor. It broke apart easily. She bent down to retrieve the parts but did not have another vision when she touched them.
