Ashwin Sorenson, alpha of the Southside Pack, walked down the aisle towards the altar with everyone in attendance looking at him in admiration and reverence. It was his wedding day but this was not a wedding of Love or even that of the overwhelming werewolf mate bond. It was a wedding of convenience and greed and power.
Ashwin was a 6.4 broad shouldered mountain whose reputation was as vicious as a physique yet he was as handsome as the sun setting in the west. He wore a white suit and his best man who followed behind him was his brother in a black suit.
Ashwin and his brother got up to the altar and soon the Bride waltzed in, in her marvellous pink wedding gown. The bride, of course, was Fellrath Plunge; the alpha of the Northside pack. She was a devious powerful alpha whose strength and dominion was only surpassed by Alpha Ashwin's.
So it was safe to see that this was the wedding of the century amongst werewolves.
Alpha Fellrath was followed in by four bridesmaids who stood behind her when she got to the altar. The two alphas looked straight into each other's eyes without the sparks of marriage floating in the air. None of them were even smiling.
Alpha Ashwin did not believe in love and he saw the mate bond as weakening. He'd rather pursue power and that was exactly what he was doing. Alpha Fellrath on the other hand lost her mate years ago and has since had her eye on Ashwin.
The priest who was an elder in Alpha Ashwin's pack began blessing the Union when Ashwin saw someone walk into the church from the side of his eye. He turned in that direction and saw the most beautiful lady he had ever seen. A redhead.
Ashwin felt a strong pull towards her and could not seem to take his eyes off of her.
"Alpha Ashwin," the priest called his attention.
He turned to the priest, snapping out of his own thoughts as he asked "yes?"
"I said, do you take Alpha Fellrath Plunge to be your lawfully wedded wife?" The priest asked.
"I uh–" Alpha Ashwin spoke as though he was confused.
He was so sure of getting married up until that point. He looked at the red-headed woman again and he had fallen in love with her that instant. He had a weird feeling surging through him and knew that the redhead was his mate.
"No!" He answered the priest coldly. "I do not!"
"What?" Alpha Fellrath expressed disdain and shock.
"I don't think I can do this." Alpha Ashwin muttered he staggered back.
The crowd went nuts. There was a flood of murmurs pouring in. Alpha Fellrath took a step forward and held Alpha Ashwin by the arm, then leaned in and moved her lips to his right ear.
"What do you mean you can't do this? You asked for this. She whispered into his ears with an intense voice fuming with worry and vibrating with shame.
He didn't say anything. She pulled away a bit and looked into his eyes in which she saw the hint of calm red that had stained his greenish blue eyes. She scoffed. "The mate bond. Yours has been activated. You don't believe in love and the mate bond, Ashwin, remember? Point me to this mate of yours and I'll kill her where she stands so we can continue our wedding."
Ashwin did not respond, he was back in his thoughts and overwhelmed by emotions. He just stood still like a petrified antelope in front of headlights.
"Where is she?" Fellrath shouted in his face but he did not respond.
She turned away from him and looked into the crowd. Her glance travelled till it landed on the redhead standing in the aisle with the same bedazzled expression on her face that Ashwin had on his.
"You!" She called in rage.
Fellrath took six steps away from the altar with her werewolf claws bulging from her fingers. She went with every intent to cut down the redhead where she stood but she stopped halfway when Ashwin grabbed her by the arm and threw her back to the altar.
His strength could not be matched by that of Fellrath; she fell like a leaf and crashed into the altar's concrete. Her bridesmaids and Ashwin's brother had fled from the altar.
"Really, Ashwin?" She stated as she stood up. "You would betray me for this low life omega!"
She was bitter and angry and embarrassed. "If you want to touch her , you'll have to go through me!" Ashwin growled, mounting himself in front of the redhead in all his manly and alpha vigour.
Do you know what this means, Ashwin ! You're declaring war! Fellrath huffed.
At her utterance, her bridesmaids and some members of her pack which were present assembled behind her, visibly taking over the entire altar.
And without flinching, Alpha Ashwin said "so shall it be."
"All this for a woman who's name you don't even know!" Fellrath hissed.
Ashwin turned to the redhead behind him and asked with a gentle yet commanding tone, "what is your name, dear?"
"Um, Pettway, sir. Pettway Wintergreen." She stuttered with the most soothing voice ever.
"Now I know her name!" Ashwin spoke aloud as he turned, only to see his brother standing right in front of him.
"Iddo?" He called his brother's name in confusion.
And before he could blink, his brother, Iddo, stabbed him in the torso with a silver dagger while muttering the words "for the pack," in his ear as Ashwin gasped for breath. And Pettway who was behind him also did the same, she could feel the pain he felt.
Ashwin pushed him away with all the strength he had before Iddo could stab him again and soon saw some members of his pack side with Iddo.
"My own brother tries to kill me on my wedding day." Ashwin spoke with his hand on the stab wound.
He was bleeding profusely. His guards had come to surround him. With him and his new found mate, Pettway, in the middle of the guards they began retreating.
"I would urge you all to leave Southside now because you wouldn't want to be here when I hunt." Ashwin threatened as they left the church.
"Keep your pet hidden, Ashwin, cause I'm coming for her and you!" Fellrath spoke with revenge in her eyes.
Ashwin was taken by motorcade to his mansion and he dragged along the so far silent Pettway. His doctor was already waiting once he got to the house. His guards carried him in and unto his room, where the doctor attended to him.
"Thankfully no vital organ was hit." The doctor said when he was done stitching him up.
"Thank you, doctor."
"Other than the sliver's corrosiveness slowing down your healing you should be fine in a day or two."
The doctor left and Ashwin got up from bed. He walked out of the room and asked the guard standing there for Pettway and he was directed to the library.
Pettway was seated in the library with a guard watching over her; she had not said a word since she got there.
The doors opened slowly and Ashwin walked in in a furry dark blue robe.
"You may go." He said to the guard who then left immediately.
He looked at Pettway who could not even raise her eyes to meet his own.
"Why are you quiet?" He asked and approached her.
She still didn't say a word. He then raised her face with his finger and met her jaw dropping beauty.
"I'm sorry I ruined your wedding. Alpha, I promise, I'll make it up to you!" She finally blurted out words.
"How?" He asked.
"Huh?"
"How will you make it up to me?"
He lowered himself and leaned forward to her. His nose was an inch away from hers and their eyes were locked in a staring contest; but she looked away so shyly.
"I don't know." She muttered.
He chuckled and stood straight. He turned to walk away but she then asked, "can I please go?"
He stopped In his tracks and without turning to face her asked, "go where?"
"Home." She answered. "To my family?"
"I'm your family now. I am your mate."
Pettway didn't say anything after that, she just lowered her head sadly.
Ashwin could feel her sadness; he could feel everything she felt because of the mate bond, and vice versa. He knew she was sad.
"Okay. You can go home for three days. Not an hour more. You can use that time to say your goodbyes and pack. After which you will return here to stay by my side where I can protect you. That is a command."
Pettway didn't know how to feel about that, she just got up immediately and accepted. Besides, she had no other choice, her Alpha had commanded.
"In the meantime, I'll appoint you a guard who will take you home, watch over you for those three days and bring you back. Follow me."
He led the way out and picked one of the guards he saw along the way to take her home and watch over her all the while she was going to be home.
Pettway sat in the backseat of the car with the guard driving. She could not help but steal glances at Ashwin who was standing in front of the mansion watching her being ridden away.
Pettway's house was the polar opposite of Ashwin's mansion; it was a tiny lowly house in which she stayed with her father, aunt and two sisters. Her escort parked just across the street from her house and watched as she walked to the door.
She paused for some seconds and took in deep breaths before she opened the door and walked in. Her two sisters were in the sitting room fiddling with their phones, they paused immediately they saw her.
"Dad! Pettway is back!" Her younger sister called aloud.
Her elder sister on the other hand gave her the most distasteful look ever and sighed before looking back at her phone. Her father rushed out of his room buckling his belt and soon her aunt followed, arranging her hair as she came.
"Pettway, where have you been?" Her father asked bitterly.
She could not muster up any words. She just stood in front of them, playing with her fingers.
"Your father is talking to you for goodness sake." Her aunt shouted at her and pulled her long hair.
This made Pettway scream in pain and fall to the ground.
"You! You went to that wedding, didn't you? Despite me telling you not to go!" Her father scolded her.
"So disobedient and disloyal like your whore mother!" Her aunt slapped her face softly.
"I-I am sorry." Pettway muttered in tears.
"You better be. I wonder who let in trash like you to such an event. Speaking of trash, go clean the kitchen and take out the trash." Her father shouted at her.
Pettway slithered her way into the kitchen, still in the clothes she wore to the wedding and began cleaning the hot mess her family had made in the kitchen.
While she worked, images of Ashwin kept creeping into her head and she'd shake her head occasionally to shake off the images.
Her aunt walked in when she shook her head again and the woman laughed at her mockingly.
"Pettway is going crazy!" She said aloud and walked out.
She finished up in the kitchen and took the trash out front where her eyes met with the guard who brought her. He sat motionless in the car, staring at her. She looked away and dumped the trash in the large bin before going inside.
"Hey, pitway." Her elder sister mocked. "Come get this list. I need you to hurry to the market."
"Okay. I just need to take my bath."
"What! Are you talking back to me?"
"Umm. No, I'm not. I just need to."
"Shut up!" She shouted and threw the TV remote at her.
The remote jammed her forehead but she did not move or make any sound, despite the pain. "You pompous little maggot! When did you get so vile?" Her elder sister cursed in anger as she got up and slapped her hard on the cheek.
Pettway held her cheeks which had now turned as red as her hair; and began sobbing.
"Oh shut up! Lousy fool."
There was a sudden knock on the main door but no one flinched. Pettway's elder sister kept looking at her with disgust. The knock came again and this time a lot more vigorous.
"Who the hell is it!" Camille, Pettway's elder sister, shouted and hurried to the door.
She opened the door very quickly and angrily, ready to pour her rage on whoever was knocking only to be met by the stale face of Alpha Ashwin.
"It is me!" His deep yet smooth voice echoed like a roar. He didn't need to say his name to be known. His presence announces itself.
Camile staggered back in fright and shock while stammering" A-A-Alpha!"
Alpha Ashwin lowered his head and entered the house even without an invitation with the words "where is Pettway?"
His voice carried rage and authority and his presence practically made everyone's persona humble and submissive. Pettway stood in the middle of the sitting room, her hand was still on her cheek.
Ashwin took one look at her and with a voice that clapped like thunder asked "how dare you!" Everyone was terrified. Why was the billionaire alpha of southside in their house and more importantly why was he asking for Pettway.
"Oh Alpha." Pettway's father spoke respectfully." What brings you to my lowly ho-."
"Silence!" Ashwin commanded. "How dare you? How dare all of you?"
"Forgive me, Alpha. But I do not understand what you-."
"You will when I sentence you to excommunication!"
Ashwin's father and the entire family fell on their knees, even Pettway, begging him. For an alpha to excommunicate a werewolf meant that werwolf would be a lone one in the pack; disallowed from communicating and doing business with any member of the pack.
"You beg for them, even after they abuse you?" He asked Pettway.
"They are my family."
"And you are my mate!"
Everyone gasped in shock. This revelation made them beg even more, Mates feel whatever their mates feel, so Alpha Ashwin must have felt the slaps they landed on Pettway.
"Pack your things, we're leaving right now."
"I'm sorry, Alpha but I– cannot. Umm– I uh. I cannot leave my family."
Everyone looked at her with shock, then they looked at each other with eyes that could speak.
"Are you that dense or you're just delusional. They do not care about you. They might be your family but you are not theirs." Ashwin was fuming.
"I'm sorry, Alpha."
Ashwin was so infuriated by her words that he turned to leave. But then he paused, he felt the need to protect her and keep her close, so he couldn't just leave her. He knew what cruelty was and how it could evolve. So if she stayed, they'd find a way to torment her even with touching her.
"I'm giving you fifteen minutes to pack your things and meet me outside or else I will excommunicate your entire family and make sure no other pack anywhere accepts them."
Everyone in the room gasped in terror but Ashwin did not linger to see them tremble. With a cold face and a horrifying demeanor, he stormed out of the house. Everyone let out a sigh of relief once he got out of the door. It was a miracle he did not inflict any harm on anyone. They were well aware of his gruesome reputation.
Pettway's aunt hurried to Pettway and grabbed her strongly by both arms, shaking her.
"Have you lost your mind girl?" Her voice quaked as she spoke, " Do you spite us so much that you will ruin us with your secret!"
"It's not a secret I only-"
"Shut up!" Her father raised his hand to hit her but then held himself back, he remembered that just laying her could mean his death or the excommunication of his entire family.
"She definitely hates us. And would give anything to see her own family suffer!" Camile spoke bitterly.
"No, I don't."
"Why? Why are you do disloyal even to family?" Her father asked with a disappointed look on his face.
"Just like her mother." Pettway's younger sister hissed.
"Go pack your things this instant and disappear from my house, you are a curse I've let scar me for too long; I will let you go before you destroy me!" He cursed her.
"But father-" she tried to beg.
"Silence!" The man Shouted at her, shunning her words." Get your belongings and get out!"
Pettway could not control the tears that gushed out her eyes and rolled down her cheeks. She stood still drenched in sorrow and confusion.
"Did you not hear him!" Camile shouted also.
"Move!" Her aunt added.
Pettway sobbed softly as she began walking to her room which she shared with her younger sister. She could not hold back her tears while walking up the stairs, even till she got to the room and began packing her clothes into her box.
All Pettway had known was this house and the cruelty her family showed her which she had come to see as normal and even made excuses for their actions. She had never been anywhere else. She had never had any other choice.
She didn't have much so she was done in a short time. She pulled the box out the room and down the stairs until she got to the sitting room where she was met by the eyes of her entire family.
"I hope you didn't steal any of my clothes!" Her younger sister questioned harshly.
"No." She answered, shaking her head.
"Well go on, then." Her aunt said to her and she turned towards the door.
She kept looking back at them and stealing glances until she was out the door where she saw Ashwin waiting by the car he drove to her house which was across the road just behind the car that brought her home.
She felt his rage. It was like an abyss that could never be satisfied, not even with the consumption of everyone and everything that upset him. And this made her anxious; but the emotion that was dominant in her heart was pain for the way her family cast her out. For some reason, she expected them to fight for her to stay.
She was about to cross the road when a moving van drove by at minimal speed. Ashwin couldn't see her for some seconds because the van stood between them. And when it drove past completely, Pettway was gone and the van sped up.
Ashwin's eyes popped open so widely, they almost fell out. He immediately turned to the van and ran after it but his injury struck a sharp pain in his torso making him fall to the ground.
