Elise Ye felt hot.
She felt like she was being scorched by the sun, like all the water in her body had been evaporated.
With beads of sweat running down her forehead, she got closer to the man on top of her to cool down. A few moans later, she heaved and let out a gasp.
And then, with a heavy groan, a soft and comforting pain spread out through her entire body.
She hugged the man tightly and blurted, "Victor, I love you."
The dim light didn't let her notice the man's raised eyebrows.
Nine months later
"Relax! And then just inhale and exhale! Yes! You're almost there! Push!"
Elise clutched the sheets on the cold operating table as a doctor of the First Hospital of Y City encouraged her. She was sweating profusely. A severe pain ran through her body and she involuntary grabbed the arm of the person beside her.
It was unbearable. She was about to faint. She hadn't expected the delivery to hurt this much.
"Elise, come on! Push!"
Although she was in a confused state of mind, Elise recognized the gentle and anxious voice of her husband.
"Victor..."
She must hold on. This was their child, born out of love. She had to be strong.
"Elise, I'm here!"
Victor Chi held her hand anxiously, trying to give her strength. This child was important to him and he couldn't let anything go wrong.
Noticing the concern in Victor's eyes, Elise felt much better. She was exhausted, but she tried to summon up whatever courage she had left. Then she heard a loud cry and the doctor exclaimed.
"Yes! You've done it! It's a boy! Congratulations!"
Elise was almost on the verge of passing out. Upon hearing that, she murmured softly, "That's great, Victor...."
She had done it. She could rest now.
After taking the baby from the doctor, Victor looked at Elise with mixed feelings. He seemed hesitant. After a while, he finally made up his mind.
"The child is dead."
"What did you say, Mr. Chi?" The doctor was stunned. The baby was completely fine. Why was Victor declaring him as a stillborn?
"I said that the baby is dead!"
Victor responded coldly and put an envelope along with a check in front of the doctor.
The doctor dubiously opened the envelope. His face instantly turned pale and his hands began to tremble.
By the time he looked up, Victor had already left with the baby.
"Is it a boy?"
As soon as Victor came out of the delivery room, a man with a cigarette between his lips approached him. Throwing the cigarette away, he pulled off the blanket and looked at the baby. He seemed delighted to notice it was a boy.
"Great! You'll have fifty million dollars!" He reached out to hold the baby. Victor dodged.
"Wait!"
"Are you regretting your decision?" The man frowned and then sneered. "Do you want to keep him now? Don't forget that he is not your child!"
Victor was stunned. But the man was right.
This was not his child.
Nine months ago, his company had been on the brink of bankruptcy. He was in urgent need of funds but no one would help. This man had approached him and offered him a ridiculous sum for a simple favor. Someone else needed a woman to deliver his baby.
The only condition was that the woman had to be a virgin.
Victor had no choice at the time, so he had thought of his girlfriend, Elise. After proposing to her that same day, he had taken her to a hotel room.
However, he hadn't been in the room with her.
The child wasn't his. Victor came to the present and handed the child over without hesitation.
"Good! Otherwise, you will be bankrupt!" The man was about to leave, but Victor stopped him.
"Don't tell anyone about this."
Victor couldn't risk exposure.
"Don't worry, my mouth is shut. I will disappear as soon as the money is transferred. Now hurry up! Your mother is coming."
Victor immediately loosened his grip, and the man ran towards the VIP area with the child in his arms.
In the VIP area, another woman was giving birth.
Her ward was besieged by bodyguards, and several doctors kept coming in and out. They were all grim-faced. It looked like things weren't going well.
After a while, a nurse rolled a medical cart into the ward. After a while, they heard a baby's cry.
The birth had been successful.
The people outside heaved a sigh of relief.
"What about the baby? Where is my grandson?"
The moment Elise woke up, the first thing she heard was the anxious voice of Victor's mother.
'Ah, the baby!'
When Elise thought of the child she had just risked her life to bring into this world, a smile appeared on her face.
Her child! She wanted to see her child.
"Victor, let me have a look at the baby!" Elise was feeling weak from having given birth, but she still struggled to prop herself up into a sitting position. She looked around, but the expected crib was nowhere in sight.
Was the baby in the nursery?
She turned to look at Victor, but he avoided her inquiring eyes. "You have just given birth, and the doctor said that you need a good rest."
Victor's evasive eyes and his habit of licking lips when he was lying made Elise's heart sink. She looked up at him, her eyes cloudy with confusion. "What's wrong? Victor, is there anything wrong with our baby?"
Victor's silence freaked her out even more, and countless scenarios flashed in her mind.
'Is the baby sick? Or is there something wrong with him because of obstructed labor?'
"Victor, say something!"
"Yes! Victor, where is my grandson?" Marion, Victor's mother, was very eager to see her grandson. She didn't understand why he was hesitating, so she urged him to speak up.
Flustered and distracted by the barrage of questions, Victor furrowed his eyebrows. He looked up at Elise, whose face was pale. After a long moment, he swallowed back his guilt and slowly said, "He's dead."
'Dead?
What did he mean?
I heard the baby crying just now. How is he dead?
How could it be possible?'
"Victor, you are lying to me, aren't you?" A wave of dizziness came over Elise. "Victor, please don't crack such a joke. Can you bring him to me?"
"That's right. Victor, don't kid like that!" Marion was starting to feel agitated at his words. How could the baby die? "Didn't the pregnancy tests say that there was nothing wrong with my pregnancy?"
Elise tugged at the hem of Victor's shirt, fervently hoping that it was just a joke. However, his next words sent her straight to hell.
"Elise, calm down. The baby had stayed inside your belly for a really long time. He didn't make it. He died soon after he came out.
The doctor can prove that I didn't lie to you."
Victor's words were like a sharp knife stabbing into her heart. Not a single coherent thought formed in her head.
Elise burst into tears instantly, and her mind went completely blank.
Marion's curses and Victor's attempts to pacify her reached her ears.
They were being loud, but Elise could hardly hear a thing. Suddenly, a slap fell on her face, and the burning pain brought her back to the senses.
"You are a jinx!
It's all your fault, you bitch! You kept pestering Victor. You can't even give birth to a child!
You are good for nothing. Give me my grandson!"
Marion's words pierced Elise's heart.
She had always known that Victor's mother looked down upon her. More than once, Marion had emphasized how undesirable she was as her future daughter-in-law, coming from a poor family and being saddled with similarly poor, useless relatives.
If Elise hadn't been pregnant, Marion would have forced her to break up with her son.
But now, the baby was gone! 'My baby is gone!
How could it be?
It's impossible.'
"No, I don't believe it! My child was here just now. He is still alive. I will find him!"
With those words, Elise threw back the covers and ran outside, disregarding the fact that her body was drained from having just given birth.
She had been to this hospital before-she remembered the way to the nursery, where all newborn babies were housed. 'Victor must be lying! I will bring my baby back myself!'
She stumbled all the way to the nursery, her tears making her eyes blurry and unable to see her surroundings clearly. She hadn't gotten far when she bumped into a man. With how weak she was, she fell to the floor.
She was about to apologize when she heard a baby cry. She raised her head and saw the man holding a baby in his arms.
The baby's cry was exactly the same as what she had heard before she fainted.
'My baby!
That's my child!'
As if she had a telepathy, she knew with bone-deep certainty that the baby in the man's arms was her child.
"My child! That's my son!"
Elise clutched at the man's shirt, tears streaming unceasingly from her red-rimmed eyes.
Frowning, Shepherd Li glanced in disgust at the filthy madwoman at his feet and snapped coldly, "Let go of me."
However, the woman didn't let go and instead grasped his shirt even more tightly. She even tried to grab his arm.
Shepherd's icy gaze became even colder. His body seemed to emit a chill aura, which made the onlookers around them shudder.
Just as Elise was about to reach for the child, Harrow Gong, who came later because he had been handling the formalities, saw a woman in a blood-stained hospital gown pestering his boss. Taking a deep breath, he motioned for bodyguards to take away the crazy woman clinging to his boss.
"Let go of me! That's my child! Give me back my baby!"
As Elise watched her child getting farther and farther away, despair began to erode her sanity but also gave her great strength. She broke free manacle-like grip of her captors and ran quickly to Shepherd, stretching out her hands to take the child back.
However, Victor's arms slid around her from behind before she could touch the baby.
"Elise, calm down! That baby is not your child! Your child is dead!"
Hugging Elise tightly, Victor stroked her back and tried to calm her down. Then, he turned toward Shepherd and apologized, "I'm sorry. My wife has just lost our child and is not in her right mind at the moment. I'll take her away."
'This man is dangerous.'
Although Victor didn't know him, he knew that the hospital didn't usually allow bodyguards to come and go at leisure.
He couldn't afford to offend this man.
Besides, the child in his arms might really be Elise's.
Shepherd took a look at Elise, who was taken away by force. Disgusted, he closed his eyes to block the sight of the blood stains on the floor. Just then, a strange smell mixed with blood lingered in his nose, making him extremely uncomfortable.
His response was visceral, but it was not just physical. That scent teased his mind.
The scent of that woman was very familiar-it was like he had smelled it that night. It was so strange!
However, it didn't matter. He didn't want to stay in such a place for a moment longer.
"Harrow, transfer her to another hospital immediately. Ask her to never come to such a place again.
This place is disgusting!"
Shepherd frowned in disgust.
Five years later
An exhausted Elise took out her key. But the door in front of her opened itself and a figure in red jumped out, grabbing her handbag.
"Elise, you are back! Did you get your salary today?" Paying no attention to her, Elaina Ye rummaged around Elise's handbag and finally found the envelope she was looking for. "Ah, why is there so little money in it?"
Elise was used to Elaina's complaints. She replied indifferently, "That's all I have left after paying the medical bills."
"The medical fees?" A sharp voice came from behind Elaina. "Who asked you to pay those? I told you to hand over all your salary to me!"
It had come from Harley Yu, Elise's stepmother. She came forward and put her hands on her hips with a frown of discontent. "I've been working so hard to take care of the family. And you just give your money away!"
"Auntie, we owe those bills to the hospital. I had to pay them." Elise was tired and didn't want to argue with her stepmother. She went to her room.
Harley snorted behind her. "What do we owe the hospital for? Did they ask for the money?"
"Mom's right. And besides, my brother-in-law will pay those bills. Why did you pay? We are left with so little money that I can't even buy my study materials," Elaina pouted. Just as she was about to stuff the money into her pocket, Harley grabbed it.
"Mom! What are you doing?" Elaina shouted discontentedly. Harley responded with a snort. "Go ask your brother-in-law for the money."
"Stop it, both of you!" Elise rubbed her temples, feeling a terrible headache rising. "I broke up with Victor a long time ago. I have nothing to do with him anymore. So, we can't take money from him."
Five years ago, she had lost her baby and then created a scene at the hospital. Afterwards, she'd suffered a massive hemorrhage, making it difficult for her to get pregnant again. Marion had used that as an excuse to force her break up with Victor and cancel their engagement.
Further, she had told her that the Chi family was on the verge of bankruptcy. The only way to save them was for Victor to marry a woman from a powerful family. Marion had begged her not to hold him back like some deadweight.
However, that wasn't why she had broken up with Victor. Although she did not want him to go bankrupt because of her, she also didn't want to give up her love.
Recalling the events that had taken place five years ago, Elise felt a dull pain in her heart. Without even realizing it, she dug her nails into her palms, almost drawing blood. She didn't come back to her senses until Harley's sharp voice rang out.
"The Chi family owe us! If you hadn't broken up with Victor, could they have turned the tables? In my opinion, all the credit goes to you." The more Harley thought about it, the angrier she became. Back then, Elise was pregnant with Victor's child. Harley had thought that she would live a good life in the future after Elise married into the Chi family. What hadn't crossed her mind was that Elise could be utterly useless. Not only had she lost her child, but she'd also been dumped. To top it all off, they were getting nothing from the Chi family.
In fact, if Harley hadn't made a scene, even the betrothal gifts would have been returned.
"Hey! You! You're really useless!"
Elise knew her stepmother's feelings towards her. If she had a choice, she would have never returned home.
But when she thought of her father lying sick and alone in bed, and in desperate need of someone to take care of him, she had to endure it for her father.
"Auntie, stop it. I'll make money!"
Elaina heard the declaration and her eyes lit up immediately. She leaned over and tried to flatter some money out of her. "Elise, do you still have some money of your own? I want to attend a celebrity training class. I only need five thousand. Will you help me? Please?"
"Celebrity training class?" Elise frowned at the thought of Elaina's bad friends. "It's not that easy to become a celebrity. You should study hard now. And are you telling me that the entire class costs just five thousand? No, something is up!"
"Your sister thinks she is the best in the world and that only she can be a star. Elaina, just forget it! She's not going to give you any money." Harley counted the money and snorted. "This is not enough for this whole month. If you don't make it up by tomorrow, I'll go find Victor and ask him for the money myself!"
"Humph! A miser! And a useless sister!" Elaina rolled her eyes in disgust, first at Harley and then at Elise. Then, picking up her bag, she rushed out of the house.
Her mother was right. If she didn't have money, she could ask her brother-in-law for it.
