"Jasper... So, that's what you are busy with? Huh?"
At she reached the elevator, Gabrielle Shen called her boyfriend to tell him about the interview she had, but all she got were a few mutters of how he was still busy with his internship. Seeing that it was inconvenient for him, she hung up in a hurry. Just as the elevator opened, her heart dropped to the pits of her stomach. There, she saw a couple openly flirting with each other as the man's arms tightened around the woman's waist.
Jasper Ye quickly drew out from the woman's grasp, as his eyes widened by a fraction. He didn't expect to see his girlfriend like this. "Why are you here?" he demanded, as if it was her fault for catching them in the act. "Weren't you applying for an internship?"
Gabrielle Shen's face shifted to that of uncontrollable rage. "The company I've interviewed for is the Mu Group. I remembered telling you this hundreds of times! Were you even listening to me?"
Her fists trembled as the spear of betrayal twisted deeper into her heart. As she thought of the sweet words Jasper Ye had told her, the painful feeling grew even greater.
"Go back first. I'll explain all of this to you later, okay?" He grabbed her wrist.
"We still have work-related things to talk about. You wouldn't understand."
Nancy Qi sneered at the piteous sight. She had always hated Gabrielle Shen – the cold, unfeeling bitch. Jasper Ye had always been one of the most outstanding bachelors back in their school, and she couldn't help but fall for him. What she didn't expect was for him to like Gabrielle Shen instead. Not convinced that he actually loved her, she decided to chase him.
Sure enough, no man would ever not fall in love with such a beauty. Thinking of this, a flash of haughtiness appeared in her eyes before she resorted to acting out her part. "Jasper, you shouldn't waste your time with this kind of woman," she whispered softly. "Look at her! She doesn't even understand your needs."
Gabrielle Shen's face contorted with disgust at the sight of the shameless woman snuggling up to her partner. She shook off his hand. "What do you have to explain?"
Jasper Ye darkened at her words. "You've always been so ungrateful, do you know that?" he spat out, having enough of her arrogance. "Even when I pursued you, you always act like you're better than everyone else. Well, let me assure you that you aren't!"
"I'm ungrateful?" She resisted the urge to snort in disbelief as she eyed the man who had once been so considerate and sweet to her needs.
Her delicate face flushed with color as the harsh betrayal made her tremble. The kind man had never been this shameless towards her.
She looked up, and the corners of her lips twitched. "Is that really all you can say?"
Seeing as she still didn't let it go, Jasper Ye gritted his teeth. He was about to say something else when Nancy Qi quickly interrupted him, "Gabrielle, sweetie, you're the only one who thinks your relationship is going anywhere. The only reason he doesn't want to break up with you is because he feels sorry for you. I mean, look at you, how else can you compare to me?"
Her voice was loud and clear that it had attracted multiple passers-by.
Jasper Ye was about to turn and leave with Nancy Qi when a voice called him back.
"Wait!" Gabrielle Shen quickly blocked their way as she stared at him coldly. Her fingernails dug into her palm as the next words ripped her heart into two. "Let's break up."
The man paused for a few seconds, as if he couldn't register what was happening. She actually wanted to break up with him in public? Who the hell did she think she was? However, after he gazed at the aloof woman standing in front of him, there was something about her that made his heart quiver. It was as if her indifference had made her even more attractive. He shaped his lips in a thin line, unwilling to let her go.
"Break up?" Nancy Qi snorted. "Haven't I just told you that Jasper doesn't want you anymore? You think you're the one who should break with him?"
"Am I talking to you?" Gabrielle Shen snapped, having enough of the woman's yapping.
The resentment in Nancy Qi's eyes deepened. After taking a step forward, she shoved her backwards.
Unprepared from the sudden impact, Gabrielle Shen staggered back, losing her balance almost completely.
However, as she squeezed her eyes shut, she didn't feel her back hitting the hard pavements below her. Instead, she felt a warm embrace wrapping around her back and a familiar scent of perfume.
Stunned, the young woman looked up.
The man was dressed in a clean cut suit. His face was carved like a sculpture, paired with a deep set of eyes and an angular jaw. He pursed his thin lips. There was something about him that screamed a certain elegance.
She recognized him in one glance. "Mr. Alston..."
Alston Mu, CEO of the Mu Group, and the man who had just interviewed her.
He helped her up as if it was nothing to him. "Hello," he greeted.
She didn't expect for him to respond. As his warm hands grabbed a hold of her waist, she found herself gazing up at him.
"Is this your boyfriend?"
He glanced at Jasper Ye with narrowed eyes. The coldness in his gaze made him freeze.
"Him? No, not anymore."
'Interesting.' Alston Mu glanced at her, yet even then, his gaze still revealed nothing.
"Mr. Alston, don't listen to her nonsense. In reality, we still haven't broken up. She's just throwing a tantrum," Jasper Ye stated as if it was a matter-of-fact. With an awkward laugh, he grabbed Gabrielle Shen's wrist. "Don't make a fool of yourself, Gabrielle. Come with me."
A fool?
"Let go of me!" Although Gabrielle was unwilling to leave, she found herself powerless under his tight grip. Just as she was struggling to pull away, the silent man suddenly stepped forward and grabbed her other wrist. Before any of them could react, he quickly pulled her into his arms.
"Let her go," Alston Mu commanded – his cold voice ringing across the hall. Jasper froze, and his eyes widened. After glancing up at the man's hardened gaze, he subconsciously loosened his grip on her wrist.
There was something about this man that screamed danger. He wasn't an idiot to piss him off!
Just then, Gabrielle suddenly cried out in pain, falling deeper into his arms. Alston Mu quickly turned to her side to see what the commotion was about.
Her cheeks reddened in embarrassment as she ducked her head. She didn't expect that she would fall into his arms two times in one go. "I'm sorry," she stuttered out, refusing to look him in the eye. "I–I must've twisted my ankle."
She wore high-heeled shoes in the interview. When Nancy had shoved her back, she sprained her ankle from the sudden force.
Alston Mu gazed at her fair ankle to see that it was already swollen and red under the bright bows of her heels.
With a frown, he didn't hesitate to sweep her off her feet.
The action made her freeze. "Mr. Alston," she managed. "I can walk on my own. It's fine."
"Don't move." Without giving her any room for argument, he easily carried her as he walked towards the exit.
Behind him, Jasper stared wide-eyed at the events that had just transpired. He tried his best to slander Gabrielle in front of the CEO of the Mu Group, how could she have captured Alston Mu's favor that fast?
Unwilling to give up, Jasper was about to race after her when Nancy stopped him on his tracks.
At the other side of the building, Alston Mu was already heading towards the underground parking lot with Gabrielle in his arms. Once he reached a sleek black car, he opened the door and placed her in.
The series of actions were smooth and quick that she had no chance to react to what was happening. She only came to her senses once Alston had already started the car.
Glancing at him, she stiffened. "Mr. Alston, where are we going?"
The man looked straight ahead. It took a few moments for him to answer, "Don't worry. I'll just take you to a doctor."
The man's presence sent a jolt into her veins. Although a part of her felt timid and shy under his presence, another part of her wanted to be close to him.
After hesitating for a while, she nodded and the car sped farther away.
However, instead of stopping at the hospital like she had expected, she found herself arriving at the gates of an incredibly luxurious villa.
Although she had never been there before, she could assume that this beautiful mansion was Alston's home. The magnificent villa was solemn, as its intricately carved walls loomed over them when they neared the door.
After getting out of the car, Gabrielle stood by one of the columns as Alston went ahead to park the car at the front.
Suddenly, a man in a tuxedo stepped out of the villa.
When the butler caught sight of her, he almost jumped out in excitement. He bowed down and clapped his hands together. "Miss Gabrielle, you're back!"
"What? What did you just say?" Gabrielle furrowed her eyebrows at the man's strange words. She had no idea who Alston was before her interview, and it was also the first time she had ever come to this house. Why would he say that?
Suddenly, the butler's eyes fell on his master behind Gabrielle, and his face changed almost completely. He straightened his back as beads of sweat trickled down the side of his neck. "No," he stuttered out. "My mistake, Miss."
Mistake? Given the expression on his face earlier, he meant what he said.
However, before she could inquire about it more, Alston's voice boomed from behind her. "Could you walk inside? Or do you want me to hold you?"
His words made her freeze.
Like a deer caught in headlights, she slowly turned around. "No, no," she said hastily, waving her hands up in the air. "I can go in by myself."
Without another word, she limped into the entrance.
Behind Gabrielle, Alston shot the butler a warning look. Almost immediately, the old man lowered his head in fear.
Only then did he catch up with the woman. Placing his hands on her arms, he guided her into the villa, steadying her staggering figure.
After the two left, the butler breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that it was safe for now. These days, it was best not to be on his master's bad side.
On a second thought, however, a smile wove its way into his lips. 'Miss Gabrielle has finally returned!'
After entering the living room inside the villa, Alston quickly placed her on the sofa. The soft cushions enveloped her small body as she looked up at him, not knowing what else to say.
He turned around and left the living room. A moment later, he returned, holding a small cup in his hands.
"Here." His voice was like a searing melody, one that she could listen to for ages.
"What?" She furrowed her eyebrows. It was only when she looked closer did she realize that he was holding a cup of Oolong osmanthus tea.
The familiar fragrance entered her nostrils, as she sighed. Somehow, there was something about this very act that made her feel strange, as if this wasn't the first time this had happened.
However, she quickly shook her head as she took the cup from his hands. 'I'm probably just imagining things.' Placing it on the tea table, she smiled, "Thank you, Mr. Alston."
Even then, she still made no move to drink from the cup.
Seeing her hesitation, Alston frowned. A faint shadow encompassed his handsome face, but he said nothing.
Instead, he turned his gaze to the butler who was standing a few feet away from them.
At first, the butler could only furrow his eyebrows as the man's frown deepened even further. It took him a few moments before he finally realized what his master meant.
"Mr. Alston, the kitchen is fixing up your dinner. Why don't I see if they're finished?" he suggested meekly.
Finally, his gaze softened as he replied indifferently, "Go ahead."
It was as if the stormy clouds had finally been lifted.
The butler simply smiled and left the two alone. After all, he was already used to his master's indifferent nature.
Seeing his figure retreat at the back door of the living room, Alston turned to look at the woman with a faint smile.
However, Gabrielle felt even more uneasy as she shifted closely against the cushions. A part of her grew increasingly conscious of the placement of her limbs. Seeing her like this, he said, "Why are you so nervous? Don't you like the tea?"
She froze. "Yes, I do."
Only then did she realize that Alston knew of her favorites and personally made one for her. But how would he know that?
Pursing her lips, she raised her head in confusion as she tried to search the answer within his cold face, but he revealed nothing.
Just then, a knock reverberated across the living room. Within a few minutes, a doctor dressed in a white coat rushed over to them with a medicine box in his hand.
When the doctor caught sight of Gabrielle, there was an unreadable glint in his eyes. He was about to rush over towards her, but when his gaze fell on Alston, he took a deep breath and suppressed his agitation.
Immediately, the doctor squatted in front of her. "Miss Gabrielle," he said softly. "Please show me your ankle."
Gabrielle wore a pair of loose pants that day for the interview. Hearing the doctor's words, she bent down and was about to roll up her trousers.
However, before she could, Alston placed a hand on her arm. "Don't move."
"What?" Gabrielle glanced up, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion.
Before she could react, the cold man squatted by her side and reached for her injured ankle. His soft fingers grazed across her skin from time to time, leaving a trace of burning feeling over her skin.
He gently maneuvered around her foot, acting as if he was holding some previous gem when his fingers expertly folded her pants.
She felt as if her whole ankle was on fire. Before he could even roll up her trousers, she was already as red as a tomato.
When she glanced up at the doctor, the man could only flash her an understanding smile.
Her blush brightened.
Although she had been with Jasper for around a year, she never felt this way with him. A part of her thought that it was because she had lost her memories previously that made her completely indifferent to her surroundings, but after this, it seemed that, that wasn't the case.
She had just met this man today, but she was already a blushing mess! Her heart raced in her chest, as she struggled to steady her breathing.
Alston paused for a few seconds before standing up. An unreadable emotion flashed in his eyes, and he turned away. "Your legs are injured, so it would be inconvenient for you to bend like that,"
he said as if he was doing her a small favor. The gentleness she just felt from him seemed to be her illusion.
"Thank you," she whispered, blushing.
His lips twitched into a smile.
The family doctor of the Mu Family couldn't help but stare at them, smiling. When Alston rose to his feet, he dutifully bent down and applied the ointment over her ankle.
He was quick on his fingers that she almost didn't feel the pain. Before she knew it, he was already wrapping her ankle with bandages. He stood up. "It's just an ordinary sprain – nothing serious. Just don't touch it, and you'll be fine by tomorrow."
"Thank you."
"You're so welcome. It's my job, Miss."
Without another word, he left.
Her whole experience here was incredibly strange. Alston, the cold and indifferent man she met in the interview, was somehow soft and caring. The butler and doctor acted as if they recognized her when she had only met them. As she continued to think about it, she found herself growing more and more puzzle.
Seeing that the swelling on her ankle had lessened, she glanced up at the man. "Mr. Alston, thank you for helping me," she said gratefully. "It's getting dark. I have to go home now."
"And how will you do that?"
His words made her stop. Right. She couldn't move.
Seeing her silence, he continued, "The butler has prepared dinner for you. Why don't you leave after that?"
A part of her hesitated, but after hearing that they had already prepared the dinner for her, she found herself agreeing. "Uh, sure. Thank you!"
As they were talking, the butler came over with a wheelchair. Gabrielle was about to pull herself up when Alston suddenly bent over and carried her from the sofa.
"Ah!" The sudden feeling of weightlessness overwhelmed her. Gabrielle subconsciously clutched onto the man's shoulder, blushing as she felt his muscles rippling under his shirt.
Hearing her yelp, Alston bent his head to look at her. His eyes were filled with complex emotions that she found herself growing more and more confused.
One more thing she couldn't figure out was why she blushed once she looked into his eyes.
Too timid to say a word, she allowed him to carry her onto the wheelchair. Seeing the scene, the butler immediately retreated, leaving the two of them for themselves.
After placing Gabrielle on the wheelchair, he naturally walked to the back and pushed her forward.
It was as if this was all part of her dream. Behind her was the CEO of the Mu Group, the famous Alston. They had only met during the interview, yet from these actions, it was as if they had known each other for years. Why was he doing this?
When they reached the dining room, he dragged the original chair out of the way and pushed her near the side of the table. He gave her a bowl and a pair of chopsticks.
Her fingers tapped against the glass table, feeling anxious under his gaze.
Fortunately, Alston returned to his seat. Once he sat down, the familiar scent of perfume no longer lingered around her, and she found herself immediately coming to her senses.
Taking a deep breath, she smiled at him. "Mr. Alston, I will have to..."
He frowned slightly, as he gazed at the food that were placed in front of him. It seemed that he didn't want to talk to anyone during the meal.
Noticing his subtle movement, she immediately closed her mouth and turned her attention back to the bowl in front of her.
However, what went unnoticed was the look of sadness that flashed in his expression. The grip on his chopsticks tightened even more. Why did she always want to leave him?
Soon enough, they were already finished eating their dinner. Just as Gabrielle had thought she could leave, the butler rushed towards them regretfully. "Mr. Alston, Miss Gabrielle," he murmured, bowing his head. "The car has already been driven away, and it's late... I don't think we could hail a taxi now...
I'm sorry, Miss Gabrielle. I'm afraid you're not able to leave tonight."
The Mu family's villa was located in the suburbs of G City. She couldn't go back without a car, and given the scarcity of cabs around the area, she might not be able to hail one even if she tried.
Her eyes widened. "Is there really no other way?"
The butler rubbed the back of his neck.
Of course, the villa had thousands of cars. However, he knew for a fact that his master didn't want her to leave just yet. That was why he lied.
He simply bowed his head in reply.
Gabrielle, however, didn't doubt him for a second. She gazed at Alston as her eyelashes fluttered. She was at a loss of what to do.
Alston glanced at her indifferently. "Do you have anything you have to deal with today?"
After thinking about it for a while, she shook her head. Her long black hair swayed, making her look even more beautiful under the dim light.
"Then stay," he insisted. "I could drive you back tomorrow."
The moment the words left his lips, a strange idea rose in her heart. It was as if the whole line of events had sounded all too coincidental. Was it?
She hesitated.
However, he didn't seem fazed. "Are you afraid that I would do something to you?"
"No, of course not..."
He was the CEO of the Mu Group. How could he be interested in an ordinary college student like her?
Seeing that he seemed unconvinced with her answer, she quickly added, "I'll stay. Thank you for taking me in for the night."
As the words slipped her lips, she thought that she saw him smile, but she quickly shook her head. It was probably just a trick of the light.
However, even then, an unfamiliar feeling surged through her chest. Was this really all a coincidence?
Seeing her nod, the butler breathed a sigh of relief. He clasped his hands together. "I'll prepare a room for Miss Gabrielle right away!" He didn't wait for their approval as he scurried out of the dining area.
In a few moments, she slowly stood up, wincing as she did so. "I'm also already full, Mr. Alston. I think I'll go upstairs and get some rest now," she excused herself.
"Hmm..." Placing his chopsticks on top of the table, he grabbed the napkin and wiped the corners of his mouth.
Hearing his vague answer, she pursed her lips. Was he agreeing with her?
Before she could ask a follow-up question, he immediately stood up, walked to her, and picked her up in one swift movement.
Her eyes widened in astonishment as her arms swung against his chest. "I can walk by myself," she protested, wiggling under his grasp.
He raised an eyebrow playfully. Under the light, he looked far from the indifferent boss she thought he was. "Walk by yourself? You sure about that?"
As if triggered by his words, her ankle sent her a shot of pain, making her wince. Honestly, she wasn't the slightest bit sure at all, but she didn't want to bother the man by asking him to carry her around.
Alston decided to ignore her protests as he carried her across the living room and went up the spiral staircase. It seemed like forever as she was carried up, feeling the warmth of his fingertips grazing down her back. Finally, they stopped in front of the door to a room on the second floor.
"Open the door," he said. Seeing as he was holding her in his arms, he couldn't touch the doorknob.
She followed. Even then, she still felt strange by their movements. Although they were just acquaintances, he seemed to act so casual around her – as if they had known each other for years.
When she twisted the doorknob, the door creaked open.
Alston walked into the room with Gabrielle in his arms. Seeing as there wasn't any light in the room, they could only be assisted by a dim light from the other end of the corridor. Striding forward, he placed her onto the large bed in the center of the room.
"Good night," he said lightly.
"Um..." She shifted around the bed as she squinted up at the tall shadow looming over her. It was hard to see in the dark.
As if he was reading her mind, he reached out to turn on the bedside lamp. Immediately, a warm yellow light filled the large room. "I've prepared pajamas for you on the bed. The doctor told me that your injury would heal as long as you don't drench your bandages, so don't take a shower, okay?"
She didn't expect that such an aloof man would give her so many warnings as if he was her mother. Unable to speak, she nodded.
Seeing this, Alston retreated to the doorway. Before he closed the door behind him, he said softly, "Good night."
Then, his figure disappeared into the corridor.
Finally coming to her senses, she whispered to the closed door. "Good night, Mr. Alston."
Her words echoed across the room that she couldn't help but blush.
Without another word, she propped up on her bed and gazed at the surroundings, wanting to get a look around the room that she was staying in for the night.
It was obvious that this wasn't an ordinary guest room. The walls were covered with bright blue paintings, with small stars that shimmered under the warm light. The calming view could send any person back to sleep.
At the south of the room was a balcony. The windows were open, and the cool wind blew in, swinging the curtains from time to time. From here, she could see the bright nightlife of G City from afar.
What a great view!
And after observing how personalized the furniture was, she couldn't help but assume that the room was meant for a very important person in his life. A part of her thought of why he would let her in, in such a personal area.
