Selene Nocturne stood in the middle of the grand hall, trying not to yawn. The Blood Moon Ball was the biggest party of the year for vampires. Everyone who was anyone in the Crimson Court was here tonight, dressed in their best clothes. But Selene hated every minute of it.
"Another dance, Princess?" A tall vampire with slick black hair and a too-wide smile bowed before her. He was the fifth suitor to ask her to dance tonight.
Selene faked a smile. "I'm afraid I need a moment to rest, Lord Valerian."
The vampire looked disappointed but nodded and walked away. As soon as he was gone, Selene rolled her silver eyes. These fancy balls were all the same - boring music, boring people, and boring talks. All anyone wanted to talk about was how she was the vampire princess and how lucky they would be to marry her someday.
Selene touched the blood-red diamond hanging from a silver chain around her neck. The family heirloom felt especially warm tonight, almost like it was alive. She had worn it to every ball since her 100th birthday, but it had never felt like this before.
"Is something wrong with your necklace, dear?" a smooth voice asked.
Selene turned to find her friend Lila standing behind her. Lila looked beautiful in her green dress that matched her eyes exactly.
"It feels strange tonight," Selene whispered. "Warm. Almost like it's... pulsing."
Lila's eyes widened with interest. "Really? How odd." She reached out as if to touch it, then pulled her hand back. "Perhaps it's reacting to the blood moon that's coming."
Selene looked up through the crystal roof of the ballroom. The moon hung low and full in the night sky, but it wouldn't turn blood-red for another three months. Still, there was something different in the air tonight. Selene could feel it.
"Princess Selene," a deep voice called from behind her. "A word, if you please."
Selene turned to see her uncle, Lord Darius Nocturne, standing close. His silver hair was pulled back tightly, and his red eyes seemed to glow in the dim light of the hall.
"Of course, Uncle," Selene said, excusing herself from Lila.
Darius led her to a quiet area of the ballroom, away from curious ears. Even though Selene was 200 years old, she still felt like a child whenever her uncle spoke to her in that serious tone.
"You seem distracted tonight," Darius said, his voice cool and even. "Five suitors have asked you to dance, and you've turned them all away."
Selene straightened her back. "I don't connect with any of them, Uncle. They're all the same - they only see me as the vampire princess, not as a person."
Darius sighed. "Connection or not, you must choose a mate before the next blood moon - just three months from now. If you do not, I will choose for you."
Selene's mouth fell open. "But why? I have centuries ahead of me!"
"The future of our bloodline depends on it," Darius said definitely.
For a split second, something strange passed over Darius's face - was it fear? But before Selene could be sure, his face was back to its usual cold mask.
"Do you understand me, Selene?" he asked.
Selene wanted to argue, but she knew it wouldn't do any good. "Yes, Uncle," she said, looking down at her shoes.
"Good. Now return to the ball and at least try to enjoy yourself. The court is watching."
As Darius walked away, Selene felt her collar grow even warmer against her skin. She touched it again, wondering why it seemed to be responding to her uncle's words.
The rest of the night dragged on forever. Selene danced with two more suitors just to make her uncle happy, but her mind was far away. Three months to choose a guy she didn't want? It wasn't fair!
By the time the ball finished, Selene was exhausted. She walked back to her rooms, dismissed her servants, and collapsed onto her bed still wearing her ballgown.
"Three months," she whispered to the empty room. "Three months until I lose my freedom forever."
With that sad thought, Selene drifted off to sleep.
She was running through a dark bush, faster than she had ever run before. The moon hung full and bright above her, lighting her way between the trees. Her heart pounded with joy rather than fear.
A howl echoed through the night, making her stop in her tracks. She should have been afraid - werewolves were the enemies of vampires, after all. But instead, she found herself pulled toward the sound.
As she pushed through a thick patch of bushes, she entered an area bathed in moonlight. On the other side stood a huge wolf with jet-black fur. It was bigger than any wolf she had ever seen or heard of.
The wolf turned to look at her, and Selene gasped. Its eyes were golden - bright, clever, and somehow familiar. They stared at each other across the opening, neither moving.
"Who are you?" Selene whispered.
To her shock, the wolf began to change. Its body shifted and reshaped until a man stood where the wolf had been - tall and powerful, with those same golden eyes now set in a human face.
"I've been waiting for you," the guy said, his deep voice sending shivers down her spine. "For so long."
He stepped toward her, hand outstretched. On his wrist was a silver claw band that seemed to glow in the moonlight, just like her ruby pendant, which was now burning hot against her skin.
"Your blood calls to me," he said. "As mine calls to you."
Selene reached out, her fingers almost touching his...
Selene jerked awake, gasping for breath. Her heart was beating, and her skin was covered in a thin layer of sweat. The dream had felt so real - she could still smell the forest and hear the wolf's howl echoing in her ears.
Her hand flew to her throat. The ruby pendant was hot to the touch, glowing with a faint red light that it had never given off before.
"What's happening to me?" Selene whispered.
She got out of bed and went to her window, pulling back the heavy curtains. The vampire castle stood on a cliff overlooking a large forest - the werewolf territory that all vampires were forbidden to enter. In the distance, the trees seemed to call to her, offering secrets and freedom.
Without fully understanding why, Selene found herself getting ready. Not in one of her fancy dresses, but in her riding pants and boots. She threw a dark cloak over her shoulders and tucked her bright pendant beneath her shirt.
She had to know if her dream meant something. She had to know why her pendant was responding this way. Most of all, she had to know who the man with the golden eyes was.
Selene slipped out of her room and down the secret passage that she and Lila had found decades ago. It led all the way out of the castle without passing any guards. Within minutes, she was outside, taking in the night air.
The pull toward the trees was even stronger now. Her pendant seemed to tug her forward, taking her down the cliff path and toward the forbidden trees.
"This is crazy," she whispered to herself. "If Uncle Darius finds out..."
But she kept going. Something more strong than fear was driving her forward.
As she reached the edge of the forest, a twig snapped behind her. Selene whirled around, fangs extending automatically.
"Where do you think you're going?" Lila asked, stepping out from behind a tree.
"Lila! You scared me half to death," Selene said, her teeth retracting.
"You didn't answer my question," Lila said, her green eyes hardening. "Why are you heading into werewolf territory in the middle of the night?"
Selene paused. Should she tell Lila about her dream? About the golden-eyed man?
Before she could decide, a howl cut through the night - the exact same howl from her dream. Her pendant flared with heat and light, noticeable even through her shirt now.
Lila's eyes widened at the sight. "Selene, what's happening?"
Another scream, closer this time. And with it came a feeling of rightness, of being called home.
"I have to go," Selene said, turning toward the dark trees.
"Selene, no! It's dangerous!" Lila grabbed her arm.
Selene softly but firmly removed her friend's hand. "I'll be fine. Don't tell anyone where I've gone."
And before Lila could stop her, Selene stepped into the forbidden forest, following the call of the golden-eyed wolf and the burning light of her pendant... straight into enemy territory.
Sneaking Out
"Selene, wait!" Lila called, running after her friend into the darkness of the forbidden forest. "You can't just walk into werewolf territory alone!"
Selene stopped and turned around. The red glow of her pendant lit up her face in the darkness. Her silver eyes seemed to shimmer with a new light.
"I'm not alone anymore," Selene smiled. "You're here now."
Lila crossed her arms. "That's not what I meant and you know it. We need to go back to the castle before anyone sees we're gone."
But Selene wasn't listening. That strange pull was still pulling at her, like an invisible string wrapped around her heart, drawing her deeper into the woods. The howl had stopped, but she could feel something-or someone-waiting for her.
"Don't you ever get tired of all the rules, Lila?" Selene asked suddenly. "Don't do this, don't go there, marry this vampire, never talk to werewolves... I've spent 200 years following every rule. For once, I want to do something different."
Lila's expression relaxed. "I understand, but this is dangerous. These trees belong to the Silverclaw Pack. If they catch us-"
"They won't," Selene said firmly. "I'm fast, and you're even faster. We'll just look around a little, and then we'll go back. Please? Just this once?"
Lila sighed deeply. "Fine. But just for an hour. And at the first sign of trouble, we run. Promise?"
"Promise!" Selene grinned, feeling more excited than she had in decades. She reached out and squeezed Lila's hand. "You're the best friend a vampire princess could ask for."
Together, they moved deeper into the forest. The trees grew higher and closer together, their branches reaching out like gnarled fingers above their heads. Moonlight filtered through the leaves, making patterns on the forest floor.
"The pendant," Lila whispered. "It's still shining. What do you think it means?"
Selene touched the gem at her throat. "I don't know. It's never done this before. But it started right after I had that dream about the wolf with golden eyes."
"A wolf with golden eyes?" Lila repeated, her voice oddly sharp. "You didn't mention that part earlier."
"I didn't get a chance to tell you everything," Selene said. "In my dream, there was a dog that turned into a man. He had these amazing golden eyes, and he wore a silver claw band. He said he'd been waiting for me."
Lila stopped walking. "Selene, that sounds like-"
A twig snapped close, making both vampires freeze. They waited, not even breathing, as vampires didn't need to breathe all the time.
"Probably just a rabbit," Selene whispered after a minute of quiet.
But Lila didn't look convinced. "We should go back."
"Not yet," Selene begged. "We've barely explored at all."
Just then, a voice seemed to float on the wind: Selene...
Selene's head snapped up. "Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Lila asked, looking around uncomfortably.
Selene... find me...
"That!" Selene said. "Someone's calling my name!"
Lila's eyes widened. "I don't hear anything. Selene, this is getting weird. Let's go back."
But Selene couldn't go back now. The voice was calling to her, and her pendant was pulling her forward, getting warmer with each step she took toward the heart of the forest.
"Just a little farther," she said, moving ahead.
They came to a small stream that cut through the trees. The water shone in the moonlight, looking like liquid silver. Selene knelt beside it, suddenly thirsty. She cupped her hands and took a sip. The water tasted sweeter than anything she'd ever had before.
"Try this, Lila," she said. "It's amazing."
But when she turned around, Lila wasn't there.
"Lila?" Selene called, keeping her voice low. "Where are you?"
No answer.
Selene stood up, suddenly nervous. Had Lila gone back to the castle? Or had something happened to her?
She's safe, the voice whispered. Come to me, Selene...
The pendant tugged harder, almost burning hot now. Selene found herself following the stream, deeper into werewolf territory. The trees here were ancient, their trunks bigger than Selene could wrap her arms around.
After walking for what felt like hours but was probably only minutes, she came to a small opening. In the middle stood a giant oak tree, its branches reaching toward the stars. At the base of the tree was a pool of water, exactly round and still as glass.
Look into the pool, Selene...
She knelt at the edge of the pool and peered into its depths. At first, she saw only her own reflection-pale skin, silver eyes, black hair with red streaks. But then the water rippled, though there was no wind, and her image changed.
Now she saw a new face looking back at her-a woman with white-blonde hair and violet eyes. The woman's lips moved, but Selene couldn't hear what she was saying.
"Who are you?" Selene whispered.
The water rippled again, and now she saw a wolf with jet-black fur and golden eyes-the wolf from her dream. As she watched, the wolf threw back its head and howled.
And this time, Selene heard an answering howl in the real forest around her.
She jumped to her feet, heart racing. That howl had been close-too close.
"Lila?" Selene called out, louder now. "Lila, where are you? We need to go!"
Silence.
Then came the sound of twigs breaking and leaves stirring. Something big was moving through the trees, coming straight toward the clearing.
Selene's fangs extended automatically, and she backed up against the giant oak tree. Vampires were fast and strong, but they were no match for werewolves on a full moon. And while tonight wasn't a full moon, it was close enough to make any monster dangerous.
The sounds grew louder. Whatever was coming wasn't trying to be quiet anymore.
Selene looked around desperately for somewhere to hide or run, but the clearing offered no cover. The pool of water was too small to jump into, and climbing the oak tree would only trap her.
Then, from the darkness on the far side of the clearing, a pair of golden eyes appeared.
Selene's breath caught in her throat. The eyes from her dream!
Slowly, a huge wolf stepped into the moonlight. Its fur was jet-black, exactly like in her image in the pool. And its eyes-those impossible golden eyes-were fixed directly on her.
The wolf was huge, at least twice the size of a normal wolf. This had to be a werewolf, and not just any werewolf. Based on its size, this was an Alpha.
Selene pressed herself harder against the tree trunk. She should run. She should use her vampire speed and flee back to the house as fast as possible.
But she couldn't move. Those golden eyes held her in place, and her pendant was now burning so hot that it should have been painful-yet somehow, it wasn't.
The wolf took another step toward her, then another. Selene's heart pounded so hard she was sure the wolf could hear it.
When it was just a few feet away, the wolf stopped. It tilted its head to one side, studying her with a knowledge that no normal animal should possess.
And then, to Selene's surprise, the wolf began to change.
Its body changed and reformed, bones cracking and fur receding, until a man stood before her-tall and muscular, with jet-black hair and those same golden eyes that now seemed even more striking in his human face.
He wore simple clothes-dark pants and an open vest that showed his chest, covered in scars from countless fights. Around his wrist was the silver claw band she had seen in her dream.
For a long moment, they just stared at each other. Then the man spoke, his deep voice sending shivers down Selene's spine.
"Princess Selene Nocturne," he said. "Heir to the Crimson Court. What are you doing in my territory?"
Selene straightened her back, trying to look brave despite her fear. "How do you know who I am?"
The man's lips curled into something between a smile and a snarl. "I've known who you are for a very long time. The question is-do you know who I am?"
Before Selene could answer, the man took a step closer. Her pendant flared with red light at the same moment a golden glow seemed to emerge from his silver claw bracelet.
"My name is Kael Silverclaw," he said. "Alpha of the Lycans. And you, Princess, are my fated mate."
Selene's world twisted. Fated mate? That was impossible! Vampires and werewolves were enemies, not mates!
"You're lying," she whispered.
Kael shook his head slowly. "Your blood calls to mine. You felt it too-that's why you came looking for me tonight."
"I didn't come looking for you," Selene argued, but even as she said it, she knew it wasn't entirely true. Something had called her here.
"Then why are you in my forest, Princess?" Kael asked, taking another step toward her. He was close enough now that she could feel the heat coming from his body.
Selene opened her mouth to answer, but before she could speak, a scream tore through the night-a scream she recognized.
"Lila!" Selene gasped, pushing past Kael and running toward the sound. "Lila's in trouble!"
Kael grabbed her arm, stopping her. "Wait! There are guards out tonight. If they find you-"
"Let go of me!" Selene demanded. "That's my friend!"
Another scream, closer this time, followed by growls and the Kael cursed under his breath. "Stay behind me," he ordered, then shifted back into his wolf form in one fluid move.
Before Selene could argue, the massive black wolf bounded into the forest toward the sounds of fight, leaving her with an impossible choice-follow a werewolf Alpha who claimed she was his mate, or run back to the safety of the vampire castle.
The ring at her throat pulsed once, twice, then grew painfully hot against her skin.
And Selene made her choice.
Selene raced through the trees after the black wolf, her vampire speed making her almost as fast as him. Trees whipped past her face. Branches caught at her clothes and hair, but she didn't slow down. Lila was in trouble, and nothing else mattered.
"Lila!" she shouted. "Lila, where are you?"
The screams had stopped, which worried Selene even more. Was she too late? Had the werewolf guards hurt her friend?
Suddenly, the black wolf-Kael-stopped so quickly that Selene almost ran into him. He growled low in his throat, ears flat against his head. Something was wrong.
The forest had gone completely silent. No birds, no animals, not even the rustle of leaves in the wind. It was as if everything was holding its breath, waiting.
Kael changed back into his human form, his golden eyes glowing in the darkness.
"Something's not right," he said, his voice deep and serious. "That wasn't a normal scream."
"What do you mean?" Selene asked, her heart racing. "It was Lila. I know it was!"
"Maybe," Kael said, "but werewolf patrols don't attack without notice, and they'd never harm a lone vampire without bringing her to me first. Those are my rules."
Selene frowned. This didn't make sense. If the werewolves hadn't attacked Lila, then who-or what-had made her scream?
"We need to be careful," Kael said. "Stay close to me."
Any other time, Selene would have argued. She was a vampire princess, not some weak human who needed protection. But she was deep in werewolf country, and despite his claim that she was his "fated mate" (whatever that meant), she didn't fully trust Kael.
They moved forward more slowly now, Kael in human form, his every step quiet and careful. Selene followed, trying to copy his moves.
The trees got thicker here, blocking out most of the moonlight. Even with her vampire night vision, Selene could barely see a few feet ahead.
"Wait," Kael whispered suddenly, putting up a hand to stop her. "Do you smell that?"
Selene sniffed the air. Vampires didn't have as strong a sense of smell as werewolves, but she could identify something strange-a scent like rotting leaves and stagnant water.
"What is it?" she asked.
Before Kael could answer, a twig snapped loudly to their right. They both turned toward the sound.
"Lila?" Selene called hopefully.
But it wasn't Lila who stepped out from behind a huge oak tree. It was a figure cloaked in shade, its face hidden beneath a dark hood.
"Well, well," the person said in a voice that was neither male nor female. "The vampire princess and the werewolf king. How... convenient."
Kael pushed Selene behind him, his body tensing as if ready to shift back into wolf form at any moment.
"Who are you?" he asked. "What have you done with the vampire girl?"
The figure laughed, a sound like dry leaves moving. "You mean the bait? She served her role well, wouldn't you say?"
Anger flared in Selene's chest. "Where is Lila?" she yelled, stepping out from behind Kael. "If you've hurt her-"
"Your friend is fine, Princess," the figure said. "For now. But I'm afraid you have bigger problems."
With a flick of its hand, the figure threw something to the ground between them. There was a bright flash and a cloud of green smoke. Selene coughed, her eyes burning, and when she could see again, the figure was gone.
And so was Kael.
"Kael?" Selene spun around, searching the darkness. "Kael, where are you?"
No answer. The forest was silent again.
Panic rose in Selene's throat. She was alone in werewolf territory, with no idea which way went back to vampire lands. Worse, both Lila and Kael were missing, possibly in danger.
"Don't panic," she told herself. "Think."
Her ring, which had been burning hot before, was now ice cold against her skin. She pulled it out and looked at it. The ruby was dark, no longer sparkling.
"Great," she grumbled. "No help from you either."
A howl broke the quiet, but it wasn't Kael's. This one sounded different-higher-pitched and more faraway. It was answered by several other howls. The werewolf patrol Kael had stated was coming.
Selene had to move. Standing still wasn't an option anymore.
She picked a direction at random and started running, using her vampire speed to put as much space as possible between herself and the approaching werewolves.
The forest seemed to get darker and more twisted with every step. Twisted roots rose from the ground, trying to trip her. Branches hung low, causing her to duck and weave.
After what felt like hours but was probably only minutes, Selene stopped to catch her breath. She didn't need to breathe often, but the stress and fear were making her pant like a person.
"Where am I?" she whispered, looking around.
Nothing looked familiar. The trees here were even older and weirder than the ones she had seen before. Their stems were gnarled and twisted, and their branches reached toward the sky like skinny arms.
The howls got louder and closer, prompting Selene to run. She tripped on a root and fell, hurting her ankle. Although sprained, it would slow her down. Trapped against a tree, Selene feared she would die in werewolf territory without her uncle Darius knowing what happened.
As the howls neared, the clouds parted, revealing the moonlight. Selene saw a werewolf with reddish-brown fur and blue eyes snarling at her. With no tool and an injured ankle, she braced herself to fight off the creature.
Before the werewolf could attack, a big black wolf rushed in, and the two wolves fought each other. The black wolf, Kael, stood protectively between Selene and the red wolf. Kael let out a powerful howl, ordering the red wolf to retreat, which it did.
Kael then returned to his human form and knelt beside Selene, asking if she was hurt. After she mentioned her ankle, he examined it and noticed that it was only a sprain. Without asking, he pulled her into his arms, despite her protests. He argued they needed to leave quickly because the red wolf was one of Eryx's, and more would come.
Kael, his voice grim, stated that Eryx was his Beta and something was wrong for him to have attacked Selene. As they moved through the forest, Selene expressed worry for Lila, but Kael reassured her they would not leave her behind. He told her they were going to a safe place where they would be hidden from both vampires and werewolves.
Arriving at an ancient-looking cabin, Kael placed Selene in a chair and explained it was a safe house from the first peace talks between their kinds, which had finally failed. He attended to her ankle and noticed it was healing quickly. As he treated her, Selene noticed his scars and felt an unexpected feeling of safety around him.
Curious, she asked why he helped her despite being enemies. Kael replied that she was his fated mate, meaning they were linked beyond the animosity between their kinds. He pointed out the strange pull they felt when they first met. Selene found it hard to argue as she had felt that connection, but she protested the idea of being mates, saying vampires and werewolves were enemies.
"Maybe that's the problem," Kael said softly. "Maybe we've been enemies for so long that we've forgotten why."
He turned away from her, looking out the small window at the moonlit forest. "Rest for a bit. As soon as you can walk, we'll go find your friend."
Selene was about to thank him when her pendant suddenly flared with heat and light again. At the same moment, Kael's silver claw bracelet started to glow with a golden light.
They both looked down at their sparkling jewelry, then at each other.
"What-" Selene began, but she was cut off by a loud crash outside the house.
Kael was at the window in an instant. His body tensed, and a low growl left his throat.
"What is it?" Selene asked, limping to his side despite the pain in her ankle.
"Trouble," Kael said sadly. "Big trouble."
Outside, circling the cabin, were at least twenty werewolves in wolf form. At their head stood a tall, lean wolf with light blonde fur.
"Eryx," Kael growled.
And beside the sandy wolf stood a small figure that made Selene's blood run cold.
It was Lila. But something was wrong. Her usually bright green eyes were dull and empty, and there was a strange symbol drawn on her forehead in what looked like blood.
"Lila?" Selene whispered, pushing her hand against the window glass.
At the sound of her name, Lila's head turned toward the cabin. Her lips moved, making words that Selene couldn't hear but could read:
"Run, Selene. It's a trap."
