It was the month of July in L City.
The car moved slowly in the heavy rain and headed towards the cemetery.
The weather was damp and the atmosphere was filled with depression.
Penny Lou was looking askance at the broken raindrops on the closed window.
"How did he die?" she asked simply. Her voice was very hoarse. Perhaps it was because she hadn't spoken for a long time.
"He died of a cardiac arrest at midnight a week ago. When he was found the next morning, he was long gone." Samuel Chi who was sitting in the driver's seat looked at her from the rearview mirror above him.
This was the first time she had asked about her uncle, Cody Lou, since he passed away.
After Penny's biological parents died when she was still a child, she was taken in by the Lou Family. Aside from her grandmother, Willow, her late uncle had always treated her as his own child. However, she ran away from home a few years ago.
Cody had loved Penny and doted on her for more than ten years. However, her reaction to his death was extremely and surprisingly cold. She hadn't even shed a single tear for him until now.
A few moments later, Samuel parked the car outside the cemetery.
When the ignition was turned off, the humming sound stopped. The pattering sound of the torrential rain was the only thing that could be heard now.
Penny sighed deeply and got out of the car. Immediately her feet touched the muddy ground, she frowned as her shoes were stained.
She hated rainy days with every fiber of her being.
At this moment, a tall and thin man was standing in front of Cody's tombstone. He was wearing an expensive customized suit with a matching tie. A wine-red umbrella was over his head and its wooden handle was held in his powerful hand.
With her head raised, Penny glanced at the man and pursed her lips. Samuel stood beside her and asked in confusion, "Miss Lou, why aren't you going there?"
This question jolted her back to her senses. She opened her arms and said in a serious tone, "I can't move forward. The ground is filled with mud. I'm afraid that my feet would get dirty. You have to carry me over."
"Huh?" Samuel became stiff and looked at her with an embarrassed expression on his face. However, he couldn't refuse.
As soon as the man at the tombstone turned around, he saw Samuel giving Penny a piggyback.
She behaved like she was still a child. When she was young, she was the only one that was over-pampered by all the peers in the upper class.
Growing up, she was given a free hand to do whatever she wanted. The other children always rallied around her. Even if she pointed at the stars in the sky, someone would try all means to meet her demand.
Phillip Yu's face suddenly turned cold when he saw Samuel's blushed face as he walked painstakingly towards the tombstone.
A black umbrella was shielding them from the heavy raindrops.
Phillip strode towards them and ruthlessly pulled her down from Samuel's back.
This happened in the blink of an eye and none of them expected it.
Penny staggered and the muddy water splattered on her shoes. They became dirtier than before.
Phillip looked down at her. He had been a neat freak since childhood. Now he couldn't help but frown with disgust when he saw that her fair and slender legs were covered with small blobs of mud.
"You have come back after a very long time and you still haven't changed. Even in front of Uncle Cody's tombstone, you have no respect for the basic rules!"
Although they hadn't seen each other for three years, Phillip didn't hesitate to scold her for her misdemeanor.
Hearing his hostile words, Penny smiled, but the emotion in her eyes was so cold and frightening. She folded her hands over her chest and asked, "Did you just say rules? Don't you know that you are the last person on earth that has the right to talk to me about obeying the rules?"
With a vengeful glint in her eyes, Penny suddenly lifted her foot and stomped on the muddy ground and the mud splashed wantonly.
Several globules of mud appeared on Phillip's suit pant in a split second.
A sinister smile appeared at the corners of Penny's mouth as she stared at his stained suit pant. She was as cunning as a fox whose plan just worked.
Samuel's heart began to beat faster as he watched the scene. He was scared that they would have an altercation here.
After all, Phillip was no longer the isolated and helpless boy who was adopted and raised by the Lou Family.
He was now a powerful and successful man that no one dared to offend. Many things had changed over the years.
Nevertheless, Penny's perception of him hadn't changed. Even if everyone bowed at his feet like he was the Savior, she still saw him as the naive boy she grew up with.
At this moment, Phillip's blood boiled in his veins and his expression became gloomy. With his eyes narrowed, he stared deeply into her eyes.
Although the weather was so cold that people shivered, it seemed like heated sparks were clashing between these two people.
"I can't deal with your nonsense now. Let's honor Uncle Cody today. We have a lot of time to settle the old and new scores!"
Phillip's words brought a tone of finality to the argument. The rain continued to fall torrentially. Several raindrops slid on Penny's pale skin. Her long hair became wet and even her eyelashes were so misty that she had to blink repeatedly to have a clear vision.
The two of them stood in front of Cody's tombstone silently and bowed three times.
Penny straightened her body and stared expressionlessly at her uncle's black-and-white photo which was on the tombstone.
"You can now get what you've always wanted, right?"
Penny asked in a soft and ethereal voice. However, it seemed like her words were coming from the deepest part of her heart. She continued, "Uncle Cody is dead. He had no biological son in his lifetime and you are his adopted son. I'm not good with business and I have never been interested in it right from childhood. Now that the Lou Group is in a precarious situation and something needs to be done immediately, you are the only pillar..."
Penny paused and bit her lips slightly. She then asked, "Are you happy now? After so many years of humiliation and isolation, it's time to rewrite your story. You now have so much power at your fingertips."
Phillip first lowered his eyes and then turned his head to look at her eyes. His face was as cold as ice. He said in a husky voice, "How could it be? Even if I have gotten everything I want, there is one remaining... You!"
"Humph! You need to let go of the past. That chapter is closed. Do you want to drag it till eternity?"
"Well, it's fine. We should have gotten engaged three years ago. If you hadn't called everything off, we might have had a child now." Philip tried to underemphasize the incident with a shrug. "It doesn't matter anymore. I'll just take it as a harmless joke. I know you were just trying to have fun. I won't make a fuss about it in the future!"
"Oh, I had no idea that you could be this magnanimous even though you were cheated. You are really a bastard. You never cease to amaze me with your resilience."
Many years ago, Cody adopted a young boy named Phillip from an orphanage and brought him back home. No one knew who his biological parents were. At that time, Penny was a young and extremely thoughtless girl. They had a quarrel one day and she pointed at him and called him a "bastard".
This insult was like a spear into Phillip's heart at that time. Although he was always rational and restrained, his face suddenly turned pale and his whole body trembled.
However, it only happened once.
A few years had passed since then, Penny mentioned this word again today. She was no longer a child who could be pardoned for speaking recklessly. It was obvious that she had deliberately been so ruthless to him.
Phillip didn't get mad at her this time. The next second, he grabbed the back of her head tightly and said with a murderous look in his eyes, "You don't have to provoke me now. Anyway, I will marry you in the end!"
Penny swallowed hard when he let her go and resisted the sudden throbbing of her heart. With a mocking smile, she stared at him and said, "Don't even think about it. I can never be your wife. Even if you become the chairman of the Lou Group and have great power, I will never change my mind. I don't want to have anything to do with your prosperity!"
"Well, you seem to have forgotten one important detail. As long as your surname is Lou, you remain a member of the family. There's no way you can excuse yourself from this matter."
Phillip flicked his fingers over her lips roughly and added slowly, "The only way I can get rid of the taint of being the adopted son is by marrying you and becoming the legitimate son-in-law of the Lou Family. This is the only way Uncle Cody's overambitious subordinates can stop making trouble for the company. You shouldn't be so nervous. I don't like you at all. I just need to put you as a puppet at home to secure my position in this family."
Phillip spoke so frankly without one iota of shame. He didn't even try to conceal his true intentions.
When he saw the angry expression on Penny's face, he felt an unspeakable joy in his heart. He was glad that he successfully ruffled her feathers.
This was the first time in three years that he was able to relieve the depression he felt in his heart for a moment.
After staring at her for a while, he said with a mischievous glint in his eyes, "You have every right to be unsatisfied. However, you shouldn't forget that this was also Grandma's idea."
"Aaargh! Don't threaten me with Grandma! You disgust me!" His last words had gotten on Penny's nerves. As a result, she pushed him away.
"You can take it as a contract between us. After you marry me, I will help you secure your position as the heiress of the Lou Family. I'm sure you know that the stakeholders of the Lou Group have been eyeing you when Uncle Cody was still alive. Now that he's dead, what do you think they will do to you? I'm afraid that they would make your life a living hell if you don't dance to their tune. Now I'm the only person in the world that can protect you. This would be a win-win situation for both of us. Don't you think so?"
Clenching her fist tightly, Penny resisted the urge to scratch his face. At this moment, she could only reply through her gritted teeth, "You are so shameless, Phillip!"
"Thank you."
Phillip gazed at her intensely and then flashed an evil smile. He said complacently, "Don't forget that you begged to warm my bed some time ago. In spite of my shamelessness, you still love me, don't you?"
The rain continued to pour heavily like it wasn't going to stop. The heavy downpour made the road cold and empty.
A few years ago, Willow had moved to the B Villa District in the L City just to recuperate and live a quiet life. The villa was located in a remote area and it was surrounded by rough mountain roads. Even if it wasn't rainy season, this area was foggy all year round.
The journey from the city took at least four hours.
Currently, the atmosphere in the car was extremely depressing and everyone was silent. As Samuel sat in the driver's seat, he glanced at the two people sitting in the back seat from the rearview mirror.
Phillip and Penny were seated on each side and there was a wide gap between them. Phillip's jawline was tight and he had well-groomed eyebrows on his handsome face. Penny was popular since childhood because of her impeccable beauty. She had always been dazzling and enviable amongst her peers.
Only a few people were aware when they fell in love some years ago. Samuel was one of those few people.
However, no one expected that these two people who had been infatuated with each other would later fall apart and fight so violently that they almost killed each other. At that time, the fight was a major one that no one in the Lou Family could settle it.
"Penny, you haven't come to visit Grandma Willow for three whole years. She always asked about you."
"Ugh! Why didn't I come back? You are the best person to answer that question!"
Penny rolled her eyes with annoyance. Betrayal and deception were the two things that were unacceptable for her. During their relationship, she believed in her heart that Phillip was the last person in the world that would ever cheat on her. When she found out about his betrayal, she was so heartbroken and furious at the same time.
Penny was a very tough woman. No one ever dared to step on her toes. Since she couldn't forgive his actions, she taught him an unforgettable lesson three years ago.
As the journey continued, the two of them didn't say anything more.
It wasn't until the car halted in front of the villa's gate that Phillip suddenly took her hand. For a moment, Penny felt an electrifying sensation traveled from her fingers to her whole body. When she tried to yank her hand off, he clasped it tightly with his more domineering hand.
"Grandma still thinks that we are intimate. If you don't want her to worry about us, you had better be good. You need to play along with me."
Hearing he said those words calmly, Penny sneered, "Are you sure Grandma doesn't know anything about our messy break-up? Besides, how dare you use the word 'intimate' while speaking to me? Don't you feel disgusted and ashamed?"
There was currently bad blood between the ex-lovers. The trust they once had was completely shattered. What was left behind now was a mere fragment of the past, which was like a sharp ray of sunlight shining on them, as if it was mocking the innocence they had when they were young.
Penny wasn't in the mood to argue with him. So, she shook off his hand and maintained a straight face.
The villa's surrounding was extremely desolate and quiet. It seemed like the foggy and windy weather made it look more like a haunted house.
They all stood at the door and Phillip pressed the passcode on the security lock. After a while, someone opened the door from inside. It was Erica, the woman who had served Willow for most of her life.
"Miss Lou, Mr. Yu, you both have finally come back. Please come in."
Erica wore a kind smile on her face. She was indeed happy to see them. She had watched them grow up from two young children into adults. It had been a long time since she saw them standing together. As her mind flashed back to the good old times, she sighed silently.
Penny was a little surprised to hear Erica address Phillip like that. As far as she could remember, she used to call him 'Phil'.
Perhaps this change was due to Cody's death. Since Phillip's status was higher because he was the chairman of the Lou Group, Erica had changed the way she addressed him.
She now accorded him more respect and distanced herself from him at the same time. After all, he was no longer the little boy she used to know.
The villa was quiet all year round because Willow was recovering and she didn't need any disturbance. Immediately they entered inside, the pungent smell of Chinese medicine hit their nostrils. They looked around and noticed that even the corners were spotless and the furniture was orderly arranged.
Erica motioned them to sit down on a sofa in the living room and made hot tea for them. As she poured it into the teacups, the steam could be seen.
Phillip picked a cup from the tray and stretched it towards Penny. "Here, you should have some."
Erica was standing next to them and she watched his romantic gesture. Penny scratched her nose and she had no choice but to take the cup. With a fake smile, she whispered to him, "Thank you."
"Are Penny and Phil back?"
A familiar voice that was filled with vicissitudes suddenly came from behind. Penny felt a lump in her throat and felt uneasy at this moment.
When she turned around, she saw Willow walking out of the room with sheer excitement and vigor. Seeing that she was moving too fast, Erica hurried to her side and slowed her down. "Mrs. Lou, please be careful."
