The alarm rang.

A new day.

Huh, I have to get up again.

I got up and got ready. Took a bath, brushed my teeth, and did my daily chorus. Made breakfast for dad and brother and then packed my things.

Another college day.

I said my goodbyes to my family and left the house. I am on my way to college by bus.

My life has been really difficult since the day mom left us.

Every day is like a burden.

Even if everything is perfect, dad is not behaving normally.

He is hiding something from me.

And I know that.

But I don't know why he is even hiding anything? I mean even if he has a new girlfriend, it's not like I am gonna scare her away!

I understand it. It's been two years after all, if he wants someone, then it's fine!

But he goes out at night and comes home late in the morning.

But I am not really bothered about it. I just have to complete my studies and then I would become a scientist. That's all I care about. Only one year more. Then I would go somewhere far and live somewhere different.

My brother, Christopher, or Chris, is already a business man for all I care. He is all full-on ready to take over our dad's business and I can choose my path.

That's one of the few good things left in this life.

I reached the college. It is just the same as yesterday, but yeah, it is becoming more and more boring every day.

Even if I was the one who chose to become a scientist, this college is kind of boring and trust me, even the toppers hate this.

Anyways, I walked inside the college and sat on my seat, when the teacher entered the room.

"So, today is a special day!" She exclaimed.

Is today Valentine's day?

"Today, the CEO of Sullivan Enterprises is going to pay us a visit!" she announced and the smile was evident on her face.

But why?

This is a science college. Why is he coming here? He should go to business colleges, I guess.

"I want all of you to behave in front of him. Do not create any scene. And specially girls, don't ruin your image" she said with a wink.

That CEO is gonna suffer coming here.

I waited patiently for the time to flow and for the most anticipated guest to come.

On the exact time that he was expected, the teacher called us in the hall and told us he had arrived. We made our way to the hall and there he stood.

I stood there in awe as I waited for him to speak something. He is so beautiful in person. I have always seen him on the TV. But he is different in person.

"Hey, college Tre!" he exclaimed. "you must be wondering why am I here. Actually, I am here to select a student with the most potential and knowledge to work for my company" he said.

Good thing that I am kind of good in studies. Maybe I get selected! If I get it, it would be so good! I would get to work with a billionaire!

"Checking all the files and the records, and keeping in consideration the personal opinions of the teachers, I have selected five students" he said. "Cassie, Erica, Henry, Sam and Kaitlyn"

"I want all of the five students I named, here"

I went there with nervousness plastered on my face. I faked a smile.

He looked at every student. Starting from Cassie, he looked at Erica, Henry, Sam and finally me. I'm not lying, but he looked at me for a longer time and then his face turned into a faint smirk.

"Your full name?" he asked me.

My heart beat raised to the top, and it was complemented by all the people who were staring at us with curious faces.

Why of all people, did he ask that to me?

"I-I am Kaitlyn Adams" I said.

He nodded like he understood something. "I'm so sorry for your mom and if I am not wrong, then your brother is in business?" he asked.

I was shocked.

Why does the CEO of such a big company know my family?

"Y-yes," I said.

"And his name is Christopher Adams," he said. I nodded and replied, "Yes"

He smiled.

"So, now you all are requested to call your families and ask them if they are ready to send you to my office for some tests today, and if they are ready to let you work in my company in case you get selected" he said. We all nodded happily.

Well, actually, they all nodded happily.

Anyways, I took my phone and called my brother. I can't tell my dad. I don't care about telling him anyways.

"Hey Kate. Is everything ok?" Chris asked as he picked up the call.

"Yeah Chris. I just... I just have to go to Sullivan Enterprises today, bec-"

"WHAT?"

"Y-yeah actually, the CEO came here himself to select some students for research in his company probably, so I am selected along with four others"

"Oh"

"So, I just wanted to inform you that I am going to his company"

"Is it safe?"

"Yeah it looks like, you know he's a famous businessman" I said.

He has a good knowledge of every businessmen and he sure knows Mr. Sullivan.

"Have you told dad?"

"No. it's your call," I said.

"I am not going to tell him. He is not going to allow you"

"Thank you, Chris"

"I don't do anything for you. You know that, right?" he asked.

"Yeah" I replied.

"Okay bye"

"Hey... please wish me good luck. There's no one to wish me..." I said.

"You know I don't believe in these good lucks and all, so hang up!" he said.

"Okay..." I said and as I was about to cut the call, he spoke.

"Wait!" he said.

"Yea?"

"Good luck" I smiled at him.

I know my brother. He acts cold with me every day. But the main thing is that he ACTS. I know deep inside, he cares. He is like this. I also show that I don't care about him, but I do too. And I am so happy that I am gonna get a chance to at least show my talent and work at such a big company. It is a dream job. I would be so happy if I get selected. But something is suspicious.

And most of all, why did he smirk at me?

It's not like he has any intentions, because I am not at all the 'hot girl' types. I am just a simple COOL girl. But still. I felt something terribly different.

He knew me. That's why he asked my full name.

Kaitlyn's POV

I went to his company. The CEO arranged two cars for the five of us. The boys in one and the girls in other. Well, that act is decent.

I reached this building.

So dreamy!

This building definitely stands here proudly. It has many, many windows and it is extremely beautiful. All of us are taken aback by the beauty.

"Let's go," Cassy said and that's when we headed inside.

"So. I am Daniel Sullivan and you all are going to do research on this. You have to find out what this is" he said as we reached the hall.

There was this small insect in a jar.

It was very different.

Never ever studied about it.

Never ever saw it.

"It's an endangered species. You have to conduct a full-length research and I will check the file myself" he said. "Especially yours, Kaitlyn" he said.

My eyes were coming out as he took my name specially.

I don't like people's attention!

But right now everyone is looking at me.

"What is with you and Mr. Sullivan?" Cassie asked as Mr. Sullivan went to some cabin, which was his office probably.

"I don't know girls. He... I don't even know him!" I said. She sighed.

"Anyways, let's get to work. All the best!" Cassie announced and then we were sent to different rooms by a lady.

The rooms are royal.

They have all the facilities like microscope, research PC, etc.

This is awesome.

Well, Cassie is my friend here. Or I should say my only friend here. She is a really beautiful girl. And when I say beautiful, it means both personality and face.

She has always helped me in everything and she is indeed a friend. 'A friend in need is a friend indeed'. So. She is a friend indeed.

I turned on the PC. There was a notification. "Your time starts now. You have to complete this before 5 PM. Also, Kaitlyn Adams, I would love to speak to your brother. Spread my word to him"

Well, anyways, I should focus on the work at hand.

I started doing my work and started researching the creature, based on the way it reacted to different circumstances.

I headed back to the hall to submit my file and I found that all my colleagues have already submitted it and they are at the cafeteria.

I went to the office of Mr. Sullivan to submit my file.

I knocked on the door and waited for him to reply.

He replied after some time with a come in. I went inside. He looked at me, but then he really looked at me.

He saw me from top to bottom. Like he was looking through me. Like... I don't know what.

"S-sir here is the report" I said. He looked at the file in my hand and nodded. He took it himself and kept it on his desk. I didn't see any other files there. Why is everything so suspicious here?

"okay sir, then I'll go..." I said and turned around. As I was going, he stopped me.

"Ms. Kaitlyn!" he said. I froze. My name from his lips rolls out so beautifully.

I turned back around to face him. "Y-yes sir?" I asked.

"I would like you to tell your brother that I want to talk to him," he said.

What's with him and my family?

Why the hell does he want to talk to my brother??

"Oh-okay sir" I said. He nodded and I turned around.

But wait. I can ask him how he knows my family, right?

Because it's not very common to just go to someone so famous and they know about you completely, like he does.

I turned around again and asked him. "Sir, h-how do you know my family?" I asked. He sighed.

He suddenly got up and came close to me. I froze at my position. Not that I wanted to, but it just went like that. He was this close to me, that it was impossible for me to be in my senses.

"I know so much about you, you can't even imagine" he said huskily in my ears.

Without another thing, I started blushing, and I was going backwards, when he stopped me by my wrist. "So... you will tell your brother, right?" he asked.

I nodded absentmindedly and he smirked seeing my condition.

"Now you may leave" he said slowly and left my hand. I ran away and didn't stop until I reached a cab and headed to my home.

Now I have to ask Chris to 'talk' to him.

Why does he even want to talk to my brother?

How on Earth are they related?

If it is business then they would've met on their own!

Why make me come in between?

Anyways, I reached my house. Dad was there and Chris too. I ignored dad and even Chris and went to my room.

I messaged Chris after going to my room.

"Chris, please come to my room" Kate messaged me.

Oh, now this is again gonna be a mess. I got up and started going.

"Where are you going?" dad asked.

He always bosses around, even when I am simply going to her room.

"To Kaitlyn's room" I said.

"Why?" he asked.

"I don't see any reason to explain that to you," I said.

"I don't want you to ruin yourself the way she did," he spat.

"She? She is a brilliant girl with a bright future. So, leave her alone"

"Mind your language, son!" he yelled.

"Sorry. I'm just going to come back soon" I said defeatedly and went to her room.

I knocked on the door and she opened it.

"Why am I here?" I asked her. "You know that he irritates me to no end whenever we get along?"

"I know. I know brother, just hear this" she said. I nodded and we went inside and sat on the bed.

"hm" I said.

"You know Mr. Sullivan?"

"Daniel Sullivan?" I asked.

"Yeah" she replied.

What about him?

"He told me that he wants to meet you..." She said.

"For what?" I asked.

"I don't know... but there's something strange, Chris. He knows everything about me, our mom and you" she exclaimed.

He knows everything? Oh shit.

"Okay, don't worry, I am gonna ask him about it" I spoke with sincerity.

"Bye" I said and then went inside.

He even reached Kaitlyn?

I have to talk to him and sort this out at all costs. And I can't risk telling dad everything. I have to manage this by myself and prevent her from any harm.

I messaged Daniel.

"Chris here. What do you want?"

"Meet me at this location at 8 sharp" he replied.

This better not be any game. I can't risk Kate.

Chris' POV

I did my hair and was ready to meet Daniel. I am gonna set everything straight and have him leave Kate alone. As I stepped near the door, dad stopped me.

"Where are you going?"

Oh god, he is never gonna stop this nonsense.

"Stop it, will you? Why do I need to tell you that every time I step out of this gate?" I yelled.

"Okay" he said. I sighed and went to my car.

Firstly, this stupid bastard is creating scenes. Moreover, dad is going crazy nowadays. I need to tell him every single thing. I mean, I am 24! I need not tell him every single place I go and about every single girl I date.

I reached the location. It is an isolated room which is really isolated, as I see none other here. I think this is kind of dangerous, but it is not one for me.

I entered the room.

"Oh, hi Mr. Adams" I heard the voice I hate the most. I saw him standing.

"What do you want this time, Mr. Daniel?" I asked.

"ohho. I thought that you wouldn't even add mister before my name!" he clicked his tongue.

I sighed in frustration and then asked him again. "What do you want?"

"Well, not much, you know" he replied.

"Get to the point, bastard!" I yelled. He chuckled.

"Language, man. Don't freak out. I ain't in that mood. And once I get out of my mood, you know what happens" he said. I took one deep breath to calm my boiling nerves.

"So, as you must have expected, Kaitlyn is selected!" he said.

"Why are you doing this?" I sighed.

"What? She is a great scientist. She definitely deserves this" he faked.

"Oh yeah but she isn't going to come to work with you" I said.

"Like you can stop her!" he said.

"Yes, I can" I replied with confidence.

"Oh yeah? You didn't create that much trust in her Chris. She isn't going to listen to you" he said.

"I'll show you!" I said and took out my phone and called her.

"Hey, Kate?" I said.

"Yeah?" she replied.

"Well, listen you can't go to work in Mr. Sullivan's company"

"What? Chris I just received the notification that I am selected. Then why?" she asked with a little sadness evident in her voice.

"It's complicated sis. You-you just can't" I tried to explain, but I can't.

"No. NO Chris. You're also behaving like dad! WHY?"

"Kate- I- really try to understand..."

"Then give me a reason," she said.

She is plausible. But what can I tell her...?

"Just listen, Kate, you just-"

"I'm sorry brother but I can't let this opportunity go" she said.

"I have worked for this all my life, Chris. I just can't! At least not without a reason!" she said.

I heard her sobs from the side. "f-f-fine C-Chris bu-but remember this t-that I-I hate you" she cut the call.

I closed my eyes as I lowered my hand and the call cut. What can I do?

"Got in a little fight, huh?" he chuckled.

"I can't risk her," I said to myself and called Patrick.

"Pat, seal my house this moment. Make sure Kaitlyn doesn't leave the house. No matter what you have to do!" I said.

"Noted, sir" I cut the call.

"Now, you can't do anything!" I said to Daniel.

"You're ruining her future, Chris" he said.

"Me?" I scoffed. "You're unbelievable"

"Thank you, but know this she won't get a single job in her future!" he yelled.

Oh shit. The perks of being an influential man.

"Daniel..."

"What? Now will you plead to me?" he asked laughing.

"I will tell everything to her..." I said and turned around.

"If you do, she will die with the truth!" he yelled. I stopped.

No-no... h-he can't!

"D-Daniel, n-no..." I said.

"Then she should be on work from tomorrow. If no, then she would get no jobs from over morrow. And if she doesn't get to work from over tomorrow, then I'll make sure that she dies!"

My heart beat stopped.

"D-Daniel, don't hurt her..." I begged.

"Just look at you. The Future CEO of the Adams Foundation is begging to me?" he mocked. "I won't if you sent her to work tomorrow"

"F-fine I-I will" I said and then went to my car.

I am sorry, but I don't seem to have any choice, Kate.

You will go tomorrow.

And you have to do this.

I went home and straight to her room. Dad was not at home, maybe out at his night 'work'.

I knocked on the door. She opened it. She was crying. Her eyes red swollen and her face filled with dried tears.

"W-why are you h-here? I p-promise I won't go" she said.

My heart constricted seeing her like this. I don't want this. Even after all the odds, I love her and she is my only sister. The only one who I know loves me, and not my power and money. Even after saying I hate you; I am sure she still loves me. But should I really let her go?

Do I have a choice?

"You can go," I said. She looked at me and then smiled weakly.

"R-really!?"

"Yes... don't cry... I-I am so sorry" I said.

I am sorry that I can't do anything.

I am sorry that I can't protect you, although I will try, but I can't do much.

"I-It's okay," she said and hugged me. I hugged her back.

We might have hugged ages ago. At least 2-3 years ago.

"Brother, I only have you... you know that, right?" she said.

"I also have only you, Kate" I said.

We both smiled and then I went down. This is after such a long time that we actually talked. We don't usually talk. Dad tried his best to keep us apart. He kind of things that we would build a plan against him if we get along. He never let us create a good understanding. He never lets us TRUST each other. He tries his best to create different misunderstandings between us. But I know that if I can ever trust anyone in this world, after mom has left, it is only Kate and no one else. She is the only one I have and I am not letting her go this easily.

I called my detectives to keep full track of Kate's whereabouts and to report me if anything suspicious happens.

Please god. I never ever asked for anything. Did I?

But today I am. Please, not Kate. She is innocent. She never did anything wrong. The one who deserves punishment is roaming free. So please don't make this wrong judgement.

Please god. I hope everything goes okay tomorrow, and he really doesn't hurt her. If he hurts her, I will have no fucking choice than not to ever forgive myself.
