Billionaire's Regret: Hard to Get My Ex-wife Back

Author: : Phil Currie
Genre: Modern
Loraine was a dutiful wife to Marco since they got married three years ago. However, he treated her like trash. Nothing she did softened his heart. One day, Loraine got fed up with it all. She asked him for a divorce and left him to enjoy with his mistress. The elites looked at her like she was deranged. "Are you out of your mind? Why are you so willing to divorce him?" "It's because I need to return home to get a billion-dollar fortune. Besides, I don't love him anymore," Loraine replied with a smile. They all laughed at her. Some believed that the divorce affected her mentally. It wasn't until the next day that they realized she wasn't fibbing. A woman was suddenly declared the world's youngest female billionaire. It turned out to be Loraine! Marco was shocked to the bone. When he met his ex-wife again, she was a changed person. A group of handsome young men surrounded her. She was smiling at them all. The sight made Marco's heart ache severely. Putting his pride aside, he tried to win her back. "Hello, love. I see that you are a billionaire now. You shouldn't be with suckers who just want your money. How about you come back to me? I'm a billionaire too. Together, we can build a strong empire. What do you say?" Loraine squinted at her ex-husband with her lips curled in disgust.

Chapter 1 Sad Marriage

"Hey, Marco. Remember that today is our third wedding anniversary. I have prepared a surprise for you. Can you come back early today?"

After sending the message, Loraine Bryant stared at her phone screen with great expectation.

She didn't want to drop it so she wouldn't miss Marco's reply.

However, she didn't get any response as usual.

All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Loraine's heart leaped with joy and her eyes lit up.

"Is it Marco?"

Loraine rushed to answer the door.

To her disappointment, she saw Marco's bodyguards standing on the other side of the door.

"Mrs. Bryant, you have to come with us to the hospital now," ordered one of the bodyguards.

Loraine took a step back in shock and fear. But the bodyguards still dragged her into the car.

On the way, she bombarded them with questions. However, they remained silent.

The car soon pulled up at the hospital.

The bodyguards dragged her all the way from the parking lot into the hospital. They pressed her against the wall outside a VIP ward.

Lorraine, who had shut her eyes in fear, finally peeled them open. The first thing she saw was the face of her husband's sister, Marina Bryant.

"What took you so long?" Marina queried irritably.

A bad feeling swirled in Loraine's heart. "Why are you here? Why did those bodyguards drag me here? Did something bad happen to Marco? Is he sick?"

"Oh, shut up!" Marina cut her off. "Nothing bad happened to my brother. You were brought here because you will be giving Keely one of your kidneys."

"What?" Loraine couldn't believe her ears. "Did Marco consent to this?"

The three years of her marriage weren't rosy at all. She knew about Keely Haywood-the apple of Marco's eye. In the past, Keely was receiving treatment abroad. Marco traveled out constantly to see her. He was rarely at home. Now that Keely was back in the country, he brought her into his house and gave her all his attention.

It hurt a lot that Marco didn't treat her well. However, Loraine still held out hope that he would fall in love with her one day. She became a slave to him and his entire family. Every day, she did all the chores in the house.

The fact that they were asking for her kidney was the height of it all.

It was hard to believe that Marco agreed to this.

Marina avoided eye contact with her and replied arrogantly, "Of course! You and I know that my brother doesn't love any other woman but Keely. If Grandma hadn't urged him to get married when Keely was still receiving treatment abroad, my brother wouldn't have married you. Otherwise, an orphan from the slums like you wouldn't be able to married into the Bryant family."

Loraine watched her lips move, her ears shut off and her mind wandered.

Marina stood with her hands akimbo and continued disdainfully, "You have failed to conceive a child even after three years. You're just a servant in our house. Now that Keely needs a kidney and you are a good match, it's high time you made yourself useful. If you dare disobey, my brother won't hesitate to dump you and marry Keely."

At this moment, Loraine snapped back to reality when the phone in her pocket buzzed.

She whipped it out and looked at the screen.

It was a notification from her bank. Marco transferred ten million dollars to her.

Was this payment for her kidney?

Should she feel honored that her kidney was so valuable?

Loraine's heart ached severely. Tears made her eyes sting and they turned red. However, her pride made her blink back the tears that were threatening to fall.

Marina, who had been blabbing, suddenly commanded the bodyguards impatiently, "Keep an eye on her. I'll go see the doctor. The surgery must be done immediately. She mustn't run away."

Marina intentionally dropped that threat to show Loraine that she meant business. Then she left arrogantly.

Loraine wasn't going to allow them to use her just like that. When the bodyguards tried to stop her, she kicked them in the groin.

She barged into the ward, intending to ask Marco about this.

The scene she saw made her freeze on the spot. Marco was sitting on the edge of the bed.

Keely was leaning against his chest.

Marco rubbed her back and said comfortingly, "Don't worry, Keely. I'll pull out all the stops for you to get well. Just trust me, okay? I have already found the perfect match for you. You'll get better in no time."

Loraine's heart sank to her stomach at this moment.

Chapter 2 Pretentious Liar

It was as if Marco flipped a switch on his mood when he noticed Loraine's presence. He shot her an icy glare that could freeze even fire.

Although he still looked handsome, Loraine's heart no longer beat faster for him.

"Who is the perfect match you just spoke about? Is it me? You want me to donate my kidney to Keely?"

Marco's face darkened when he heard the questions. He tucked Keely in and then walked over to Loraine.

At this moment, Keely's pale face turned red. She said in surprise, "I found it hard to believe when Marco told me that he had gotten a perfect match for the transplant. So, you are the one! Are you willing to donate a kidney to me, Miss Torres?"

"No!" Loraine denied. "And you should call me Mrs. Bryant."

Keely's face froze. The next second, she began to cough and gasp for breath as if she was about to faint any moment.

Marco's eyes were blazing now. He snapped, "Stop it, Loraine. Can't you see that she's in a critical state? Do you want to kill her?"

Those words made Loraine's heart break for the thousandth time since she got married to Marco. Again, he showed that Keely was all that mattered to him.

It appeared that he would move mountains for Keely.

Loraine stared at him with red eyes. "What about me? Don't I matter to you at all?"

Marco was taken aback by her words and expression. Just as he was about to say something, Keely groaned and cried, "Ouch, it hurts..."

A second later, she fainted in the bed.

Marco's eyes bulged out of the sockets. He rushed to the bedside.

Loraine sighed helplessly, turning to leave. Noticing what she was about to do, Marco hesitated for a moment and then commanded his bodyguards through gritted teeth, "Stop her from leaving. Ask the doctor to get ready for the kidney transplant operation right away!"

He turned around and looked at the unconscious Keely with worried eyes. He held her face and muttered, "Please hold on, Keely. You will be fine soon."

Loraine was rooted to the spot. Her cheeks burned hot with disbelief and hurt.

Were her ears deceiving her? Marco wanted to take her kidney away without her permission? How wicked could he be!

For three long years, she had put her all into this marriage because she wanted to make it work.

All her efforts and perseverance amounted to nothing now. Marco's heart didn't soften. Rather, it seemed that he hated her more than ever before.

The bodyguards were about to grab her, but Loraine fought them off and walked to the bedside.

"You know what? I won't leave."

The entire ward went silent for a second. In the blink of an eye, Loraine raised her hand and slapped Keely's cheek.

The slap echoed in the ward.

Everyone present froze for a few seconds.

"Loraine, why did you do that?" Marco roared and grabbed Loraine's wrist.

Keely, who had been unconscious, opened her eyes and held her red cheek. She stared daggers at Loraine. "How dare you slap me?"

The white quilt on her body slipped to the floor, taking the IV needle along.

Blood was supposed to splutter out of her hand since the needle was taken out forcefully. However, it turned out that the needle was never inserted in her hand.

The sight of this made everyone gasp. Their eyes narrowed in suspicion.

Marco slowly let go of his wife's hand. He turned to Keely and demanded with brewing annoyance, "What's going on?"

Keely's face turned deathly pale when she saw the IV needle on the floor. She looked at Marco and stuttered, "I... I don't know. Maybe the doctor didn't insert it well."

Loraine threw her head back and laughed. "Well, I know what's going on. You are not sick at all, Keely. How despicable of you to want to harvest my kidney!"

"Bah! Shut up, you liar!" Sweat dripped from Keely's forehead. She looked at Marco and said, "This is pure slander. Trust me, Marco. You know that I haven't been well recently."

Marco shot Keely a searing glare, causing her to shake like a leaf. He then turned to Loraine.

"Don't make a scene here. I'll look into this and give you feedback afterward. If it turns out that you were wronged, I can compensate you."

Loraine stared calmly at Marco, the man she once loved.

This husband of hers had never sided with her. Even when she wasn't in the wrong, he favored others over her. She was done with feeling so disappointed. She didn't want his money.

"I don't want any compensation. Just give me a divorce!" Loraine blurted out, clenching her fists.

Marco stared at her in surprise.

This was the first time he was looking into her eyes since they got married.

Loraine didn't give a damn about how he took that request. She just spun on her heels and stormed out.

The moment she walked out of the hospital, her body shook uncontrollably. Her legs turned to jelly.

Just now, she used up all her strength to stand up against those wicked people in there.

Leaning on a car nearby, she took out her phone and dialed a number.

Loraine stood there for a few minutes before a black Lincoln pulled up in front of her. A handsome man in a suit got out.

Loraine lost her balance the moment she sighted him.

The man hurriedly held and carried her up.

"Uncle Rowan," Loraine called out, resting her head on his chest. She passed out a second later.

Chapter 3 Family's Heiress

Back in the ward, the temperature was cold as if the hospital was transported to Antarctica.

The hair on Keely's skin stood on end as she shook like a leaf. Her face turned pale and she bit her lower lip, staring at Marco.

Suddenly, the sound of hasty footsteps was heard. The door of the ward was pushed open. Marina walked in with the doctor on her heels.

"The doctor is here!" Noticing that Loraine wasn't in here, Marina shouted, "Where the hell is Loraine? Did she run away? Marco, should I send the bodyguards to drag her here again?"

Marco's eyes turned colder. He looked at his sister. "So, you were the one that brought Loraine here?"

A chill ran down Marina's spine. She glanced at Keely and argued, "I had to. After all, this is an emergency. If Keely doesn't get the kidney early enough, we might lose her."

"Shut up!" Marco then ordered the bodyguards, "Take Marina back home. Make sure she doesn't leave the house!"

"You can't do that, Marco. I was only trying-" Marina began to plead her case. However, the bodyguards held her on each side and dragged her out of the ward.

The ward became silent again.

A bad feeling surged in the doctor's heart.

Marco glared at him for a handful of seconds. Afterward, he pointed at Keely, who was no longer pretending, and interrogated, "You said that she needed a kidney transplant immediately. Why does it seem like she's hale and hearty?"

Beads of sweat appeared on the doctor's forehead. "Ermm... It seems I misdiagnosed her."

"What kind of doctor are you? How could you have misdiagnosed someone with kidney failure? Since you made such a huge mistake, you shouldn't be a doctor!"

The doctor trembled with fear. He knew that Marco could end his career with just a snap of his fingers.

He immediately sank to his knees. "Mr. Bryant, it's not my fault. Miss Haywood put me up to this. She forced me..."

"Get lost!" Marco ordered, pointing at the door in anger.

The doctor didn't care that Keely was murdering him with her eyes. He bowed and muttered an apology before he ran away.

The ward became so silent that one could hear a pin drop. Marco stared at Keely expressionlessly. His weird calmness scared her out of her wits.

Tears welled up in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Marco. I shouldn't have lied to you. Honestly, I did it so you could care more about me."

A fiery spark leaped into Marco's eyes.

"I have always been good to you. I never for once ignored you, so you have no excuse for pulling such a stunt. You know what? I shouldn't have spoiled you too much!"

Keely couldn't help admitting, "Yes, there is no excuse for what I did. I was just so stupid. I have always felt so alone since Jorge died. You know that I'm naturally sickly. I was afraid that you wouldn't care about me anymore. Can you forgive me? I promise that this won't repeat itself."

The mention of Jorge's name transported Marco to the past.

Jorge Riley was a friend of his who died while trying to save him. Before he breathed his last, he entrusted his beloved fiancee to Marco and instructed him to take care of her for the rest of her life.

Inexplicable sadness filled Marco's heart when he remembered how his friend died. His coldness melted like ice cream on a hot summer day.

"I intend to keep the promise I made to Jorge. Don't think for a second that I'll abandon you. That will never happen."

This statement made Keely's heart sing.

Before she could jubilate, Marco warned sternly, "Nonetheless, Loraine is my wife. Don't play tricks on her again. Let this be the last, okay?"

Keely slouched and pouted like a child. A trace of resentment flashed through her eyes. "Marco, you deserve better than Loraine. She hasn't brought anything good to you since you married her. She's a disgrace. Do you intend to grow old with such a woman? After everything you did for her, she's still ungrateful. She asked for a divorce today..."

"My marriage is none of your business, Keely. Don't overstep the boundaries, remember?"

The ice in Marco's eyes shut Keely up. She sulked like a child.

"Take a rest here and reflect on what you did today!"

Irritable, Marco walked out of the ward. The look on Loraine's face when she asked for a divorce couldn't leave his head.

It was a rude shock that she wanted to divorce him.

Divorcing her had never crossed his mind.

Although he was way out of her league because she wasn't from an elite family, he tolerated her since she was a dutiful and obedient wife.

It was never his intention to harvest her kidney for Keely. He had actually gotten another donor.

The money he sent to her was technically an apology gift because he wasn't going to spend their third wedding anniversary with her. He felt it was only fair that he compensated her since he was spending all his time with Keely, who he thought needed his attention now.

Unbeknown to him, Marina went behind his back and dragged Loraine to the hospital. He was made the villain for something he had no hand in.

Marco rubbed between his eyebrows and sighed.

He thought it wise to explain things to Loraine. After all, she only asked for a divorce because she misunderstood the whole thing.

He didn't think that Loraine would really divorce him. He had investigated Loraine. She was an orphan who grew up in the countryside. She had no money or power. She depended on him as far as he knew. He felt that she couldn't do without him.

**

A few hours later, Loraine opened her eyes. She found herself in a warm and luxurious bedroom.

"The heiress to the Torres family is finally back! What knocked some senses in your head? I still don't understand why you gave up everything for that man. Anyway, are you back for good now?"

Loraine turned her head to the owner of the familiar voice.

A tall and strong man sat on a chair by the bed. He had an angular and handsome face. His aura was intimidating.

Loraine burst into tears at the sight of him.

"Uncle Rowan, it was silly of me to have left. I shouldn't have abandoned you guys for that scumbag. I'm so sorry."

Rowan Torres, a fierce top officer in the military, couldn't help melting when his beloved niece apologized. He held her hand.

"Don't cry, Lorrie. It breaks my heart to see you cry. I'm so happy that you are back." Rowan kissed the back of her hand. "You know that everyone in this family loves you very much, don't you? We won't sit back and watch anyone treat you badly."

Suddenly, the door opened wide. Aldo Torres, the owner of Universe Group and one of the most powerful men in the city, walked in while exuding an imposing aura.

"Why are you crying? Big girls don't cry, Lorrie. You are the heiress of a billion-dollar empire. Instead of crying, you can deal with whosoever offended you with just a snap of your fingers!"
