She was 6 weeks pregnant.
Ava Smith walked slowly into the living room and sank onto the sofa, wrapping her arms around her knees, her mind swirling with uncertainty. Clutched in her hand was the pregnancy test report she'd received just an hour ago.
She absentmindedly touched her stomach, a storm of anxiety building steadily inside her.
It has been two years since they got married but it hadn't thawed the ice around Logan Smith's heart. Her unwavering loyalty felt more like a cruel joke in return.
Still, she couldn't stop herself from hoping-maybe the baby would change things. Maybe he'd finally care.
Just then, the sensor at the entrance chimed.
A man stepped inside-tall, commanding, dressed in a sharp black-and-gray suit that emphasized his broad shoulders and slim waist. His eyes were cold, unreadable, and piercing.
His gaze swept across the room, his expression unreadable, his handsome face distant and cold.
Ava stood up quickly, holding the test report tightly in her hand. She took a breath, ready to speak. "Logan, I have something to-"
"We need to end this," he said, cutting her off without hesitation. "These are the divorce papers, sign it."
Ava froze, the words catching in her throat as she stared at him in disbelief and then asked. "Why?"
The man gathered his eyes and began to speak. "You aren't needed. I married you because my father made it the only way to inherit his properties. I wasn't going to allow my hard work to go to the snake. I have all I need now and I think you are useless now. My true love is back. Arabella is back!"
Logan's phone rang and he answered. "Arabella what's wrong? Are you okay?" It was the woman.
Ava's heart ached. She stared at the man in front of her in disbelief. She knew that his heart only belonged to his mistress.
Her marriage to him for 2 years was filled with hatred. Every word he uttered made Ava's heart ache the most. She had been jealous of Arabella. Every time he called her he showed her care that she never deserved. It wasn't her fault that she was forced into this marriage. Her mother caused all this and now she was filled with tears.
"I will be right there," that was his word which brought her back from her sad thoughts.
"Are you heading out?" Ava asked, her voice tinged with sadness.
"Well as you can see, I have something so important to handle, every discussion can wait."
"Really, is it because of that bitch?" Ava asked angrily.
"Shut the fuck up! It shouldn't be your headache if I am going to see anyone. All you need to do is to get back in bed and wait for me because that's all you do as a useless wife that you are." he said and stormed out angrily.
Ava clenched her teeth, trying so hard to suppress the tears. If Logan knew that she was pregnant, would he still ask for a divorce? Deep down, she knew that he wasn't the woman he loved. The real woman he loved was back. How was she going to live without him and the baby? In Logan's heart, she was just an insignificant trifle he could easily dump.
Ava sat on the sofa crying for so long. She remembered the first time she met him five years ago, how he handled her with love and care. Her reverie was broken by Logan's voice outside. She quickly got up, wiping her tears. Then the doorknob opened and then there was Logan standing and staring at Ava like she was a ghost.
"Logan? What are you doing back? Aren't you supposed to be with Arabella?" she blurted out.
"That shouldn't be your problem. Back to what I said about the divorce. Sign the divorce paper and get out of my life."
"What if I don't agree?" she asked, her voice trembled as she stared at him.
Logan seemed to have known that she wouldn't agree and his tone was mocking. "I am not asking for your opinion. Do you think I love you? You irritate me."
Her heart hurts the most and this time she couldn't hold back her tears. "Logan Smith, you agreed to marry me first. I never forced you to marry me. How can you even think of a divorce?"
He stared at her angrily. "You know who I love, if my father hadn't forced me into getting married to you, do you think I would have given you more than a passing glance? I have made a big mistake."
Ava let out a short laugh. "Really, you said you loved me and cared about me. Now everything has changed just because that bitch is back! Where was she when you had a heart attack? She disappeared into thin air and now Arabella Carter came back claiming she loved you. Are you that foolish Logan?"
As soon as the word left her mouth, the man threw a hard slap in her face. "Who are you to tell me what to do? You have no right to call her name?
Ava covered her face, she was completely dazed, her delicate body couldn't stop trembling. It was the first time Logan had hit her just because of Arabella Carter.
Her heart stinger, as she snapped through suppressed sobs. "Why should I step aside for her? I am married to you and not willing to get a divorce.
A trace of impatience flashed in Logan's eyes as he pushed Ava down to the sofa and tore her clothes. "Ava you're such a bitch and I think you only need my dick to get better."
She pressed against the man's chest and stopped his fright. "Logan, are you crazy!"
Still Logan wasn't ready to stop, she pushed him away and quickly stood up. "Logan, what if I tell you I am pregnant. We are expecting a baby. Do you still want to get a divorce?"
A flicker of surprise crossed Logan's eyes. "You're pregnant?"
Ava searched Logan's eyes for a sign of reconsideration.
"Wasn't the last time an accident? Didn't I tell you to take care of it? You can't be pregnant.
"Really?"
Logan scrutinized Ava with a skeptical look before his tone returned to the initial harshness. "Well I don't care. The best thing is for you to get rid of the child and get the hell out of my life."
His words cut through Ava's heart like a thousand sharp knives leaving her breathless.
"You shouldn't take this so seriously. I will get the driver to take you home as soon as you sign the papers."
Hearing the sound of the door closed made tears she had held back for a long time flow down her cheeks.
Ava sat on the sofa all night waiting for Logan to come back so that they could settle it. Maybe he might forgive her if only she could beg him.
It was morning. She must have slept off, she immediately stood searching around for Logan but didn't find him. She picked up her phone and dialed his number. "Where are you, Logan?"
The man paused for a few seconds and then suddenly sneered. "I have only been away for hours and you are already missing me."
Ava's breath stopped for a second. In his mind, was she that shabby?
Ava took a deep breath, pretending not to hear the mockery in his voice. "I never said I missed you. We need to talk."
"What nonsense are you going to say again? We can't get a divorce, I am pregnant. I am tired of you."
Ava pursed her lips and tried to explain when a woman's voice came first across the phone. "Logan, how about this dress? Do you like it?"
The man shifted his attention immediately and his voice was gentler than Ava had ever heard. "You look so stunning. You can have all the dresses here. They look so good on you."
"Ava, we will be back soon." he said and was about to hang up when he realized that she had hung up already.
Ava stood at the balcony for a long time unable to return to her senses. Her hands and feets were cold and with a weary smile the woman turned and went back to her room.
Ava got up and decided to go get water from the kitchen when she saw the housekeeper, Susanna leading a woman to her bedroom.
"What are you doing here?" Ava snapped, anger flaring. In her two years of marriage, she had never been so insulted. Logan had finally decided to bring Arabella home.
Arabella Carter stood at the doorway casting a disdainful glance around the room. "This room is a mess. The room on the other side is the best place for Logan and me as our bridal suite."
Ava's face turned pale. "Bridal suite?" she couldn't believe that Logan had been planning their wedding already.
"Yes," Ava's voice dripped with arrogance. "I am here to set up our wedding room of course. Aunt Arabella said I could choose any room. I don't like your room but you can clear it. It will make a good space."
Ava could sense the hostility and provocation from Arabella. Arabella came back to Logan only to ruin everything Ava had built with him. Ava realized that she had been a placeholder for Arabella. Now she had been pushed out because of her.
Arabella lifted her chin arrogantly pointing to the divorce paper she had noticed. "Ava, I am really sorry you had to go through this. But it is the best thing to do. I know he had told you about the divorce and I suggest you sign it soon. If you push Logan too far, you might end up losing everything you have gained. You wouldn't want to, right?"
Ava's heart burned with rage. "Did Logan send you here to threaten me?
Arabella sneered. "Whatever you think. Logan and I are meant to be. If it wasn't for the unforeseen contingencies you wouldn't have been here today. What can a powerless woman like you do to us?"
Ava was furious but struggled to find the right words. She had always thought that a day like this would certainly come. She had to protect her unborn child.
As Arabella turned to leave, she noticed another thing, a dress on the table. "Wow! Who owns this?"
As Arabella reached out to take it, Ava turned and hurriedly carried it. "What do you want, can you just leave?"
"I need that dress. Give it to me!" Arabella lunged forward, trying to drag the dress from her.
"What is wrong with you? Haven't you taken enough? After luring my husband you still want to steal my dress."
Arabella raised her hands to slap her but Ava instinctively dodged causing Arabella to lose her balance and fall awkwardly to the floor, crying out in pain. "My legs hurt so much!"
Ava reached out to help her but a stern voice interrupted, "Ava, what are you doing?"
Logan had arrived, his face darkened as he saw Arabella on the floor. He pushed Ava away.
The force of Logan's push sent Ava crashing on the floor but she stared at them in surprise as her heart ached the more.
Logan bent down to pick up Arabella ready to leave when he noticed the divorce papers on the floor. Ava's signature was glaringly obvious on the last page. Logan's eyes flickered in surprise. "You signed it so soon?" For some reason, he felt so angry.
"Logan?" Arabella's voice was soft and pitiful.
Logan snapped back to reality, asking Arabella gently, "Are you okay?"
Tears welled up in Arabella's eyes as she whimpered. "Logan, my leg hurts so much. Will I be able to walk?
Logan massaged her calf trying to ease the bruising. "I will take you to the doctor. You'll be fine. I told you to stay away from this bitch but you insisted on coming."
Suddenly, Logan turned to Ava and said, "Apologize to Arabella now!"
Her heart grew numb as she spoke, "I didn't hit her. Are you such an asshole to take sides with this fool? She tried to hit me and fell by herself."
"That's not true!" Susanna interjected from the doorway. "Mr. Smith, I saw Mrs Smith push Miss Carter with my own eyes."
"Shut that mouth of yours!" Ava yelled.
Logan's face was filled with anger. "You shut up! You are equal to the maid now because you aren't needed anymore. Remember what happened to your uncle."
As she remembered, tears which she had been fighting back began flowing. Her uncle, Michael Carter was arrested for assault and when tried fleeing, he got into a car accident and was now in a coma in the hospital. "Logan, I never thought you would turn out to be like this."
She turned to look at Arabella who was already on her matrimonial bed. Logan turned to leave without saying any other word and Arabella stood up and followed him
Suddenly a sharp pain pulled up in her lower abdomen.
It hurts! It hurt so much that cold sweat broke out from her forehead and she shrunk herself into a ball.
She gritted her teeth, grabbed her phone with trembling hands and dialed the first phone number.
"Lo..gan, Logan please come back, my stomach hurts so much please help me."
The man interrupted her impatiently, "I just left the room and now you called me back to play games. I don't have time for this drama. Just get your things and leave the house."
Ava held back the pain. "I am not.."
Before she could complete her, the phone was hung up.
Ava dialed again but there was no response. She screamed out in pain. Maybe Logan will hear her and probably come back but it was for no use with tears in her eyes she could only dial another number.
This time, there was a quick response, a man's voice from the other side came through, "Ava what is wrong?"
"Alex..." Ava clenched her teeth, almost with a crying voice. "Please help me. I am in pain.."
Just after the words were said, her tears fell like rain.
"Ava what is wrong? Tell me where you are? I will be right over.."
"Home.."
After just saying one word, she had no energy to support herself.
As her hand shook a bit, the phone fell to the ground.
Alex's anxious voice came but it was getting farther and farther away from her.
*********************************
Ava woke up late to find herself lying in a hospital bed.
The smell of the hospital's sterile water was extraordinarily pungent, making her cringe in discomfort.
She unconsciously stroked her lower abdomen and nervously tried to sit up.
"The baby... My baby..."
Alex Smith just pushed the door to come in. Seeing this, she quickly pressed her back.
"Don't move, Ava! You're very weak now!"
Ava eagerly grasped her hand.
"Alex, how's my baby?"
Thinking about the sight of Ava lying unconscious on the sofa last night, Alex said "You almost had a miscarriage! It's a good thing you've been sent to the hospital in time, thus the baby was saved just in time."
Ava then sighed in relief and smiled apologetically at Alex. "Thank you."
Seeing her glad look on his face from a brush with death, Alex shook his head and asked, "Nothing, but Ava, when did you have a baby? Why didn't you tell me?"
Alex Smith is Logan's step brother who always loved Ava and tried all he could but she ended up following Logan and promised to be friends with Alex.
"It was just checked out yesterday."
"What about Logan Smith? Does he know?"
"Yeah but he wants me to get rid of the child because he wants to get a divorce."
Alex widened his eyes and instantly became angry. "What? So he wants you to get rid of the baby and even a divorce. What kind of man is he? He left you alone yesterday and you almost had a miscarriage. I will definitely talk to him, he can't just divorce you."
"There is no need for that," Ava suddenly interrupted. "I have signed the divorce paper and will go back and get my things and leave. I will take care of my unborn child alone."
As she spoke, tears streamed down her eyes. Alex moved closer to her and patted her. "Ava, I am so sorry you had to go through this just because of my brother. I knew that this was what was going to happen when I heard that Arabella Carter was back. That bitch has come to destroy everything."
"I will be fine," Ava said.
"Ava can you just give me a-" Alex was cut short when he heard a knock on the door.
A doctor in white coat came in alongside the nurse.
"Please can you excuse me? Time for a ward round today." The man nodded slightly and his voice was deep and gentle.
Alex walked out.
"Ava, how are you doing now?" the doctor asked.
"I am fine now."
"Mrs Smith please be careful this time you almost lost the child," he held her arm and then noticed something. "Please what scar is this?"
Ava was a bit surprised but still responded truthfully. "I got this by accident when I was a kid. What's wrong?"
The man wrinkled his brow as he found out that he was getting too personal. Then the nurse suddenly reminded him that it was time for the operation.
He turned to Ava and said, "Have a good rest now, I need to leave."
Soon they were gone as Alex stepped in. He smiled.
Her best friend, Emma came as soon as she heard what happened. She stayed with Ava in the hospital as Alex left because he had something important to do. But for the two days, Logan never tried calling to find out what happened even after Alex told him what had happened to her.
The third day, Ava was discharged from the hospital and decided to go back to Logan's house to get her stuff. Emma tried to stop her but she insisted and she finally left her alone.
Ava got home, the place was so quiet, the door wasn't locked she opened it and found no one. When she got to the bedroom, she pushed open it and didn't see Logan anywhere. Maybe he wasn't here. Where had he gone that he didn't even lock the door?
She suddenly heard a voice which startled Ava. There was Arabella leaning on a headboard, a sly smile on her lips. "Oh I thought it was the maid coming in, but it was you. How did it go? I thought you would never show your face here. Or are you here to witness some intimate moments between me and Logan. Besides it has been long since I had done such with you and it will be so nice to have you witness it.
Arabella's words were loaded with meaning.
Only then did Ava hear the sound of running water from the bathroom. Logan was in the shower. Blood drained from her face instantly. They were actually preparing to get intimate.
"You're so shameless!" Ava said.
"See who is calling names," she said and let out a peal of laughter. "You should be ashamed of yourself that Logan left you and came back to me."
"What?"
Arabella pushed her aside and walked into the bathroom where Logan was and then she heard some soft moans.
Feeling nauseated, Ava fought the urge to vomit and ran out. At this point she never felt so embarrassed and just wanted to leave for good. She immediately got up and began packing with tears in her eyes. She took all she had and prepared to leave when Susanna stood at the door to stop her.
