"Mom, I will not wear this dress!" She didn't even look at me when I mentioned it to her again, as usual.
The gown was stunning. The dress had a deep neckline and was off-the-shoulder and bodycon.
Although I'm not into these kinds of dresses, I don't dislike the dress. I typically dress in T-shirts and jeans.
Where my mother wants to take me is unknown to me. I graduated yesterday, but she wasn't there. It didn't affect me as much anymore, so I didn't complain too much.
I had no idea where we were heading.
Not only that, but she also makes the effort to dress me nicely, and this is the first time she has ever taken me anyplace.
This has never occurred before!
I felt uncomfortable in this clothing, but I said nothing because I had nowhere else to go.
Her voice was chirping, "Let's go, honey,"
Her conduct was pleasant, and I had no idea why she was so joyful today. This is strange!
I followed her after giving her a nod.
"I want you to act as well as you can there... "You will see my worst if I receive any complaints about your behavior," she warned, holding my wrist forcefully, which could result in a bruise later.
My eyes were watering and on the verge of spilling, but I forced myself to stop and gave her a nod.
We drove for a few minutes and finally reached an opulent restaurant.
I glanced at the enormous, towering skyscraper.
"Behave, Evelyn."
I looked down as soon as my mother gritted her teeth. My mother began to walk, and I went with her. We walked into the restaurant and a man came up to us.
He smiled as he looked at me and said, "Ma'am, how can I help you?"
The way he gazed at me made me uneasy, so I pulled a lock of hair behind my ear.
"We are here to meet Mr. Ashford," my mother remarked with a smile.
After saying, "Oh, follow me, ma'am," he began to move.
We went with him.
Which Mr. Ashford is he?
We came here to meet him, but why?
When I heard my mother's voice, I was still thinking about the encounter.
"Mr. Ashford, it's nice to see you."
Her voice was unusually lovely, and I noticed it. I noticed a man with his back to us when I looked forward. I could tell by his posture that he was standing as though he controlled the restaurant, even though we were facing his back.
He was standing quite erect, and his shoulders were wide. Most likely, he was taller than six feet. The sound of my mother's voice caused him to turn.
I had never seen such a beautiful dude. I couldn't take my eyes off his face as he gazed at my mom. He reached into his pocket and lifted his wide chest in our direction.
Oh God! Is he genuine?
I investigated him without shame, but as soon as our gazes locked, I looked down and swallowed. An embarrassed flush came over me. How could I, dear God?
I felt so embarrassed about myself. I had never acted like this before. He nodded, looking at my mom.
She continued, "Mr. Ashford, meet my daughter, Evelyn," while cradling my shoulders and showcasing me to him.
He regarded me as though he were examining every inch of me. I lowered my head, uneasy in his piercing stare.
After inhaling deeply, he glanced back at my mother and nodded. As though they were speaking directly into one other's eyes. I didn't comprehend anything at all.
"I hope you like her," she remarked with a broad smile.
Just like her!
What does that signify to her?
His phone rang before either he or I could ask any questions. I glanced at my mother, who appeared a little anxious after he excused himself.
"Mom, what do you mean by 'like her'?" She was asked. She smirked after glancing at me.
"You are going to marry him, honey," she added while embracing me by the wrists.
I stared at her in disbelief. My graduation was yesterday! Dreams! I wanted to satisfy them! I'm unable to get married! She couldn't have! Await! And with whom? "He"?
She exclaimed before I could inquire, "Stop letting your worthless head go wild! Yes, indeed! He's telling me, "It's him." Before I could question her further or refute this, he returned to us.
How could this man want to marry me? I asked him incredulously. Check him out! Look at me, too!
"Mr. Ashford, you like her...right?" Mom asked again.
How hopeless!
"I want to talk to her" His voice came to me for the first time. It was husky, muscular, and deep! Just listening to his voice would make anyone tremble. My mother gave a foolish smile and nodded.
My impulse was to yell at her. How could she have decided to marry me off? Moreover, it was to someone I had never met.
He gazed at me as though he were blazing a hole through my body as my mother left. I made an uncomfortable shift.
He was the first, then this dress.
I stared at him, then looked down again. I didn't want to look into those intense eyes, and I didn't want him to know how I felt on the inside.
Taking my name, he said, "Miss Benson..." None of the other people who had mentioned it sounded like it.
"Please have a seat," he said, pointing to the chair in front of him. I took a seat quietly.
Coldly, he asked me, "Do you have any questions regarding this marriage?"
I was conflicted about whether or not to ask, but I wanted to. Finally, though, I decided to inquire.
"Wh-Why do you want to marry me?" I asked him uneasily. I wanted to ask the most crucial question.
After letting out a deep breath, he spoke.
His statement, "I have a daughter," was shocking. I wanted to ask him a lot more things while I stared at him, but he resumed his conversation.
"I just want a mother for my daughter, and that's why I am marrying you," replied the man.
When he said those words, all of my hopes of being loved were dashed. I stared at him incredulously.
Observe, Miss Benson... You have dreams, and I am aware that you graduated yesterday. I'll provide you with all the financial help you need to fulfill them. However, you must be my daughter's mother in exchange. Nothing will change after the marriage is over. He clarified, "You will only be her mother, not my wife." He paused for a minute and gave the specific line more emphasis.
"A mother, but not a wife."
"Okay," I answered.
"Only a mother, but not a wife."
Evelyn's POV
I was currently driving back in the car. My so-called mother was ecstatic as I was lost in contemplation.
I remained silent following Mr. Ashford's admission.
I'm not sure how to respond. I mean, how would you feel when you find out that you are getting married and will have a child that is almost three years old?
I'm anxious, yet I didn't detest the child. I have never worked with children, so you can't hold it against me.
Although I wanted to leave this marriage, I am unable to do so. My mother had already given her approval. And if I refused, she would make fun of me by saying that she helped me out in numerous ways, including giving me food and housing that I didn't deserve. And I don't want to go through the terrible experience once more.
All I want to do is go to my room and sob uncontrollably. I have to get married even though I don't want to!
Mr. Ashford assured me that he would support me and allow me to fulfill my aspirations, but I also want to be loved. I want a husband who will value me and a family that will love me.
However, I'm not sure if I'll receive it.
When we stopped, I inhaled deeply. I left immediately and headed for my room, but my mother caught me by the arms and stopped me.
She said, "Evelyn Isabella will be here to meet you in a few hours."
Mr. Ashford's daughter is named Isabella.
I gave her a nod because I didn't want to continue. I simply walked to my room and sobbed while pressing my face against the pillow.
I was unable to process the reality of my marriage, and now his daughter is visiting me.
I'm not sure how long I sobbed. But I fell asleep when I was exhausted.
A loud thud voice woke me up.
I was initially afraid of who would be. However, I then recall that it's my mother, who consistently knocks on my door in this manner.
I went to open it after sitting up. When I opened it. "Be ready, Isabella is here!" she exclaimed.
The speaker made it obvious why they wouldn't: emergency. She was the princess of Ashford.
I gave my mom a nod before heading to the restroom. I sprayed my face with water.
The child's condition is unknown to me.
Was she a brat?
Or a well-behaved girl!
She will be a brat because she was Ashford's princess!
I noticed that someone or something was hiding beneath the woman's leg as I went to see my mother with a stranger.
Miss Benson, I look after Lily Isabella.
She welcomed me and told me.
She was in her forties or so. She appears to be a lady. I give her a small smile. Pulling the little child in a red dress, she did so gently.
Is she able to appear more adorable?
My gosh!
She was adorable.
The young girl gave me a shy glance before grabbing Lily's dress once more.
Is she afraid?
"Hey... baby come here" is something I can't help saying. She was afraid of the unfamiliar environment, and I didn't want the angel to feel the same way.
I urged her, displaying my glittering pins, "Wanna this?" She glanced up once more and then grinned slightly. God! Her grin. A beat skipped in my chest.
She undoubtedly looked up at Lily to get permission when I gestured for her to approach me.
Oh my...
Lili gave me a nod before approaching me and removing them from my grasp. She began to engage them in play.
When I see her, I grin, but then I hear my mother's voice.
She warned me with her gaze as she stated, "Evelyn spent some time with her."
"Come, Lily, let's have a cup of tea." After grinning at my mom, Lily pivoted and left. I looked back at the princess as she played with my pins and other accessories.
Oh, my goodness, she is an angel and not a brat or anything. How mistaken I was about her!
My smile came naturally as I walked toward her.
She nodded as I smiled and said, "Hey, you like it."
Why Doesn't She Speak?
I tried to make her feel at ease with me by playing with her, and I believe she finally did. I asked her again since I wanted her to take it, but I started talking to her while playing with her so as not to frighten her.
After laughing at my performance, she resumed playing.
I knew she was comfortable when she laughed, so I asked her a question. I asked her the most basic inquiries.
"Baby, what's your name?"
I settle her on my lap and ask her. I want her to introduce herself, even if I know her name.
"Isabella," she remarked in her infant voice as she raised her gaze inquisitively.
"What happened?"
She abruptly stopped playing and glanced down as I inquired. When I asked her again, she remained silent.
"You want to ask something?"
She raised her face to me as I asked. Yes, she nodded her head.
"Go ahead" I assured her, grinning. Urging her to continue. After a brief period of silence, she asked a question that I'm not sure about either.
"Are you, my mommy?"
I heard it, but it was only a whisper. I'm not sure how to respond to her.
Am I?
Her question made me swallow. Her expectant green eyes were staring at me, and I couldn't keep quiet.
What should I do?
She was staring at me nonstop, and I was at a loss for what to do. I then decided to find out what she desired!
My mother didn't seem to be going to back down, and neither did Mr. Ashford, so my marriage was set in stone!
"Can I ask you something?"
She nodded after appearing disappointed.
"Do you want me to be your mommy?"
I questioned her. And I had hope this time.
I already adore her.
She seemed to be pondering deeply, which depressed me, but she then said something that cheered me up.
She offered me her toothy smile and chirped, "Yes." She embraced me and put her hand around my neck. In her infant voice, she began to sing a tune. My heart skipped a beat when she uttered anything.
"You are my mommy"
Evelyn's POV
My mother is you.
My eyes brimmed with affection for her as she whispered those words. The fact that I would love his child or that she would love me was unexpected, but sometimes things don't work out the way you expect them to. Even though I don't want to be married, I'm not so mean to treat this angel badly.
Perhaps this isn't that horrible!
I have no idea!
I was thinking when I sensed her shifting slightly while she slept. I glanced down at the angel that was sleeping. Recalling her order to her father makes me grin.
-Rewind
A pouty "Mommy, I'm tired," she said. I smiled at her before embracing her.
I turned to face the door and said, "Let me call Lily, then you can go and sleep," but she grabbed my hand. I was ready to inquire when I turned to face her, but she spoke first.
She said, "Mommy, I want to sleep with you," in a sweet voice and with a cute dog look.
How could I turn her down?
My darling little...
She nodded and her eyes sparkled as I lifted her and kissed her cheek before saying, "Okay... but first we have to get permission from your father." My mom and Lily were chatting as we came downstairs.
"Isa will be staying with me tonight, Lily. I ask her if Mr. Ashford is okay with it. She hesitated before turning to face Isa, who was nodding her head.
She took out her phone and called Mr. Ashford, saying, "Let me ask him first."
I gave her a nod.
She spoke with Mr. Ashford after calling him. I was observing her to find out what they were discussing. She handed the phone to Isa when he asked for anything. I bit my lip when she took the phone and said, "Papa, I'll stay with Mommy tonight, okay?" She responded by nodding as though he were there in front of her when he said anything else.
She smiled and whispered, "Yes, my mommy," before blowing me a kiss. I smiled at her and kissed her back.
"No...no, I love you too," she responded quickly as if trying to persuade him. After that, kiss him as well. As if he were standing before her.
She's adorable.
As I listened to their conversation, she abruptly approached me. I swallowed hard when she handed me the phone and said, "Mommy Papa wants to talk to you." Speaking with him!
No, no. I reluctantly answered the phone. His labored breathing was the first sound I heard. Before I spoke, he said, "Miss Benson His masculine voice sent shivers down my spine as he remarked, "Bella wants to stay there tonight... hope she isn't disturbing you."
"N-no she-she isn't" I replied, my eyes going down.
I can't help but find his speech intolerable. I swore at myself for squinting.
"All well, I'll see you tomorrow. "Good night," he said as if I were one of his customers.
I said "Good night" to him before the phone died.
-----------------The end of the flashback--------------------
I felt her again stirring and this time I knew she was about to wake up. I started tingling her and she started to laugh loudly.
"Mumma no" she exclaimed between her laughing session. Once we had finished our tingling session. I bathed her. Knowing that my mother would be staying, I went to her room to pick up a new set of clothes that she had brought last night. She was forced to wear the red jumpsuit by me.
I was dressed in pants, a green cardigan, and a black T-shirt. My true self.
I dressed casually. We walked downstairs for breakfast after getting dressed.
Isa joyfully climbed into my lap when I brought her onto it after I had taken a seat.
I forced her to eat.
My phone buzzed abruptly, and I realized it was a call from an unidentified number.
I reluctantly answered the phone.
The only instruction I heard was, "Miss Benson, there is a car outside your house. When Bella wants to come, use it."
My home? I haven't got one.
"Ok," I mumble, biting my lip. With curious interest, Isa's emerald eyes were fixed on me. After laughing at her, I hung up the phone.
Since we had already eaten breakfast, we left. At my mother's front gate, I noticed a black automobile. I'm not sure what the car's model is, but it was enough to make me swoon.
Max, the driver, greeted me as I approached the vehicle. He got behind the wheel and we sat down. The automobile comes to a stop at a house's gate after thirty to thirty-five minutes.
It was an opulent home. I had my mouth hanging open. How wealthy was he?
While we were away, Max, the driver, went to park the car. I took Isa in my embrace. After a few seconds, a woman in her late forties answered the door when I rang the ring.
She gave me a little smile, and I returned the smile.
She said, "Hello, please come. I'm Maria, the caretaker of this house," and then it was my turn to say hello.
"Hello... it's Evelyn I am....."
I stopped being unsure of how to introduce myself or what else to say.
This house knows who I am. She was observing me and urging me to continue.
I felt ashamed as I was at a loss for words, but suddenly the tiny angel said.
"She is my mommy," she said, beaming broadly. Because of this, my heart missed a beat. I was saved by this angel. It was an odd smile on the woman's face.
I believe she was unaware of the marriage.
Isa yelled "Papa" as soon as we entered.
With all her might, Isa yelled. I turned as I heard a hefty footstep behind me. He was coming downstairs looking brand new when I noticed him. He still had some damp hair.
He recently showered.
When I see him, I bite my lip.
God! He was a deity from Greece.
Everything about him was divine. He was dressed in formal attire.
He whirled Isa around while holding her in his arms. He was grinning widely.
He loves her so much...
He wasn't the somber man I had met yesterday at this point. This time, he was just Isa's father and not Mr. Ashford.
Unaware of it, a tiny smile appeared on my lips but quickly disappeared when I looked directly at Mr. Ashford. He paid more attention to his daughter than to me, so I didn't mind that he disregarded me.
I don't want to feel like the unwelcome third-wheeler who is still taking in the scenery.
I heard Isa say, "Papa see momma is also here." I didn't raise my head till I heard his heavy footsteps. To keep myself from speaking, I bite my lip.
He uttered the words "Welcome Miss Benson" in a detached, dry manner. I gave him a nod in return.
"Maria meet Evelyn... my fiancee"
A few seconds later, he said When I looked up, I saw that Maria was standing there and he was staring boredly at my back.
I turned to see her face in disbelief. Her eyes widened and her mouth opened slightly before she murmured something more akin to a query.
"Your fiancée??"
