Inside a spacious yet cold room, a woman laid sprawled on the huge bed with nothing on her. She was stark naked and looking rather tired as her face was filled with anxiety, even when her eyes were closed.
The door barged open and a man looked as cold as a glacier yet his beauty could not be ignored. He was the perfect description of the gods in human form. He was too beautiful to be real.
With his hazel looking eyes and the perfect curve of his brows which looked full yet curvy. His golden hair was short but bangs were dangling on both sides of his face. His lips, more beautiful and luscious than that of a woman, seem to make him the perfect description of the god of beauty, if there was any.
Xavier Arceli, the youngest and most ruthless multi-billionaire.
But behind that dangerous beauty lay a desperate man who had just one wish in his life. That was to get an heir to continue his family's bloodline.
He was here again, at the hospital, for the surrogacy. His selected wife couldn't bear a child for him and his family were eager to pounce on his wealth.
At the other end of the hospital, Xavier's icy gaze was looking around with his devilishly handsome face barely hiding the coldness. He arrived at the hospital together with Kaylan, his wife, who was dressed seductively.
Xavier glanced around the reception room and diverted towards the doctor's office. He was hoping to receive some good news today from the doctor.
Just as he was about to get to the doctor's office, a girl suddenly appeared from nowhere and bumped into him.
Xavier's cold gaze bored into the unlucky victim. But the next moment, he frowned. She's the one that bumped into him but she ended up falling on the floor. From the look of things, she must be a nurse from this hospital because she wore their dress.
"Ouch!" She cried softly.
He glanced at the petite girl, something in her eyes drawing him closer. She was beautiful and innocent. He wanted to help her up, but she scurried up, as if afraid she would be eaten by him. Was he that horrifying?
"I'm so sorry, please I'm sorry." She apologized, profusely.
Her voice made him look at her again. He couldn't help but stare at her beautiful face, she looked so gorgeous yet so innocent.
"I'm sorry." She pleaded again.
To avoid more trouble, the girl hurriedly stood up and ran away before he could say anything, not even sparing him a glance.
Xavier looked stupefied by this. No woman had ever left without sparing him a glance. Was she blind not to notice his handsomeness?
But then she looked like a scared little rabbit and his eyes followed her till she disappeared.
"Uhh, are you okay?" Kaylan asked, trying to touch him, she'd noticed everything that happened.
"Yes.. let's go" He answered, pushing off the girl's thoughts from his mind.
Xavier walked into Doctor Mark's office together with Kaylan. Doctor Mark immediately stood up from his seat and he went to greet Xavier.
"President Xavier," Doctor Mark greeted but all he got in return was a cold grunt.
Rather, Xavier just went and sat on the empty chair.
"Have you found anyone for surrogacy? I'm here for good news," He said, not minding the doctor's flattering smile.
"Yes, I did." Doctor Mark said and he went back to his seat. He brought out a file, containing pictures of different ladies.
"These are the only people who agreed to be your baby carrier," Doctor Mark said, handing the file to Xavier.
Xavier stared at the pictures. He released a frustrated sigh, not satisfied with their looks.
He pressed on his temples, trying to control his emotions that were threatening to burst out. He was becoming more frustrated as he looked at the pictures. He turned to look at the doctor with a piercing gaze.
"Are these the only ladies that volunteered to be my baby's carrier? I don't want these women," He stated, his voice a pitch higher, startling both Kaylan and the doctor.
"We shouldn't care about their looks, as long as they can give you a child," Kaylan suggested. She was glad the girls were not beautiful, at least, Xavier won't be interested in any of them.
Xavier was hers alone. She should be the one bearing his child, not those women. If only she didn't have her own secret.
" It's not only about their looks, Kaylan. I just don't feel the connection. Besides, I wouldn't be this eager if you could fulfil your end of bargain," he gritted, suppressing his anger.
Xavier stood up and he walked out angrily. Getting married to Kaylan was the wish of his grandmother. But after five years of marriage with no child, he became desperate. All indications from the test proved it was his fault.
So he opted for a surrogate.
He was getting frustrated at the prospect of an heir. He was the sole survivor of the Leon family and they needed someone to take over from him.
He needed a son.
Xavier was fuming in anger but as he made to leave, his eyes caught the lady who bumped into him earlier.
He stared at her, her body features matched the type of woman he wants to be his baby carrier.
"Sir please, I'll look for other ladies to your taste." Doctor Mark pleaded the minute he got to Xavier.
"I want that lady," Xavier said, pointing at the lady who bumped into him.
"Sir?." Doctor Mark asked, he didn't quite understand what Xavier meant.
"I want her to be my child's carrier." He said and Doctor Mark widened his eyes.
"Huh? she isn't up for surrogacy, she's just a nurse working here." Doctor Mark tried to explain.
" Do you think she would say no to be my baby carrier? I want her. Do all you can," Xavier said.
He gave the lady another glance, wondering why he was so drawn to her. Earlier, she looked worried about something.
Kaylan just stood close to them listening to their conversation. She was burning in fury and jealousy deep down. But, she didn't want to say anything that would make Xavier angry.
"Sir. It would be difficult to convince her to accept such a deal," Doctor Mark sighed.
" Then bring her to me. Let's hear her opinion. I don't think there is anyone who can resist money," he said, still staring at the lady.
. Memorial Hospital...
The beautiful but worried Shantel in her early twenties sat close to her sickly mother. Her hazel eyes had the touch of sparkle in it. Her long and thick blonde hair was
She sat in the ward with her mum who was suffering from severe heart disease. Her striking hazel eyes kept looking at her mother who was looking extremely pale and sickly.
She has only had her mother ever since she lost her father. Not long after, her mother became extremely ill and needed surgery. But to keep her alive till the surgery, she was admitted to the hospital. She had been struggling to pay her mother's medical bill by working extra hours.
"Mum, I'll make sure you will be alright okay?" She said to her mother, forcing out a smile.
Her frail looking mother was lying closed eyes. Her skin was looking pale and her lips were pink and cracked. She had to pay for the surgery as soon as possible before her mother's condition worsened.
"Shantel! Shantel!"
Shantel heard her name being called. She had forgotten she had patients to tend to. Fortunately it was the voice of the senior nurse and not the director. She can't afford to lose her job right now.
Turning around, she saw Mrs. Courtney, her senior nurse. They both work together and she has been of tremendous help to her since her mother was brought in.
"Shantel, I know your mum is sick, but please do not neglect your duties as a nurse or you'll end up being fired," Mrs. Courtney said, staring at her.
Then she added, "You have a patient at ward 104, and you're here as usual. Shouldn't you be working so you will be able to provide the money for your mum's surgery?"
Shantel sighed, knowing Mrs. Courtney was right. After the death of her father, things had been bad for her. She was left alone to take care of her sick mother.
"I'm so sorry," She apologized, standing up quickly.
"It won't happen again," She added, her eyes lowered.
Mrs. Courtney stared at her and she smiled before leaving.
"I'll be back mum," Shantel said.
She pecked her mother's cheek as she hurriedly left. She needed to work to get her mother saved.
She was in a hurry to meet the patient that needed her attention and didn't notice someone in front of her. Before she could notice, her head hit a firm chest and his scent wafted into her nose.
At first she was mesmerized but the pain from being hit by a brick like chest got to her senses and she yelled in pain. What the fuck was this person eating?
"Ouch!"
She fell to the ground due to the impact. She looked up to see a cold but handsome face. She quickly lowered her gaze again as she tried to stand up.
"Are you okay?" The man asked, stretching his hands.
Shantel wanted to curse him but she remembered who she was. It wouldn't end well if she gets into trouble with someone powerful. And this man looked very powerful. Instead, she quickly stood up.
"I am sorry," Shantel apologized.
After apologizing the second time, she hurriedly left to avoid more trouble.
It was a narrow escape for Shantel as she left the scary looking man she just bumped into. What in the world was she thinking?
"How could someone look so cold? I swear I would have been iced into cubes if I had stayed longer!" She said to herself, panting.
" Who are you referring to, Shantel?" A voice resonated from behind her.
Shantel turned around to see her best friend, Helena, staring at her with furrowed brow. They were both working in the same hospital and she had been constant help to her.
"I don't even know the person but one look from him can set you ablaze. Luckily, I escaped at the right time," Shantel said, moving towards the counter.
" Who is that mother fucker? Let me deal with him so he would turn cold immediately," Helena said, putting on a pretentious angry face.
Shantel burst into laughter at her friend's words. If only she had seen the man.
"Shantel, I think Doctor Mark is trying to get your attention. Look over there, he seemed to be looking towards your direction and even waving," Helena told her, tugging at her gown.
Shantel glanced forward and saw Doctor Mark waving at her. Her heart skipped a beat! Did that icy man already report her? She thought she escaped before he could see her!
"Oh no! I hope I didn't do anything wrong. I just bumped into him by mistake and I even apologized!" She murmured to herself again, her heart beating very fast.
As she was moving closer to the doctor, another possibility propped up in her mind. Could it be...?
"I hope this isn't because of the money for my mother's surgery. I don't have such an amount of money now," She thought, fearfully.
Where will she get such a huge amount of money from? As she was thinking and contemplating on what to do, Helena nudged her again.
"Go on, don't keep him waiting. You know how ill-tempered he is,"Helena urged her to go.
Does she have a choice? Of course not!
"Okay," She left the counter and went to meet Doctor Mark.
As much as she summoned her courage to meet up with the doctor, she was still shaking in fright.
**
Doctor Mark watched as Shantel reluctantly and fearfully walked up to him. He wondered what kind of bad luck he had this morning. How was he going to please Xavier while pleasing his wife too?
It isn't that he couldn't get attractive women for him but Mrs. Xavier had given him enough money to only bring the candidates she approved of.
But now, Xavier was adamant!
"Come to the Manager's office," Doctor Mark said to her as soon as she got closer.
He didn't want her to go to his office because Xavier was still there. He needs to get Shantel's approval before going there.
As soon as Shantel got to the Manager's office, she quickly knelt down to plead with the director.
"Sir, please don't kick my mother out. I will try my best to bring the money for her surgery. Please give me some little time," She pleaded, her hands clasped together.
Doctor Mark sighed, he has been hearing the same excuse from her for years now but that wasn't the reason he called her.
After a while, he raised his head and stared at the beautiful innocent girl. He wondered if he was doing the right thing. But then his livelihood was at stake.
He cleared his throat, not knowing how to start the discussion with her. He knew what he was doing wasn't right but selfishness blinded his eyes.
"I know you are struggling to pay for your mother's medical bill but this is a hospital not a charity organization. I will offer you a deal, if you are interested," He said, forcing a fake smile.
Shantel who was expecting to hear him bark out loud at her was surprised at his words. She furrowed her brows wondering what deal he has for her. What type of deal will she possibly make with her boss, someone to whom she was indebted?
With a smirk, Doctor Mark replied,"I will further the expenses for your mum's surgery."
Her eyes filled with surprise, she quickly thanked him profusely, "Thank you so much, sir, I appreciate it."
But she stopped when his first word started ringing in her ears. "I will offer you a deal."
"What do you want in return?" She found herself asking. She was willing to do anything for her mother.
"Be a surrogate mother and you won't regret it." He said, resting his back on the chair.
"What!!!." She yelled, not believing her ears.
Although Shantel knew deals are mostly selfish and ridiculous, she never expected this deal! What he said was absurd. She was just a nurse here, not some baby carrier.
"This is for our good, Shantel. You will help me and I will do the same," He said, looking at Shantel's reluctant expression.
"How could you even suggest such a thing, sir? I am a nurse working in this hospital," Shantel said, insisting.
" I am doing this to help you. Besides, the..."
"With due respect sir, I don't need your help. I will look for ways myself. You can look for someone else," She said, sounding pissed.
Even if he was her boss, what right does he have to tell her to do such a thing? She was holding back because he was her boss.
"If I have a choice I wouldn't be here asking you to do it. He specifically wants you," Doctor Mark said, getting frustrated too .
"He?" She asked but Doctor Mark ignored her question.
Seeing he wasn't going to answer her, she spat out her mind,"I'm not interested."
Shantel turned around to leave, but his next words halted her.
"The minute you cross that door, be ready to leave with your mother's unconscious body. I am sure she won't survive a day without the hospital life-saving machine," He said, a little angrily.
Shantel felt her feet rooted to the floor, and her body failed her completely. She couldn't move an inch from her spot.
"Why me?," She finds herself asking as a drop of tear slides down her eyes.
"I am sorry, Shantel. You are the one that he wants," Doctor Mark apologized.
Then he added,"You're free to reject my offer."
He knows fully well that she wouldn't refuse because of her mother. Everyone is selfish these days.
"I will do it. I will be the surrogate mother," She said, biting her lips.
"Come with me to my office, you need to meet him." Doctor Mark said, breathing a sigh of relief.
"Isn't this supposed to be private? I shouldn't be allowed to see him." She said, surprised.
"You can't afford to go against him, even if you try. So there is no need for me to hide his identity from you." He explained.
As he left, Shantel trailed behind him. Who was this devil?
***
Xavier was waiting impatiently for them to arrive. There was something about that girl that was attracted to him. He just can't seem to let go. As he was in deep thought, the door suddenly opened and Doctor Mark came in with the lady.
Seeing the cute innocent face that was bowed, Xavier let out a smile, surprising Kaylan who was staring at him.
She looked at the girl that just came in. Suddenly she felt threatened by the innocence of the girl. What she wouldn't tolerate was to be challenged by whosoever that wants to act as a surrogate.
Glaring at the girl who seemed reluctant and was trailing behind Doctor Mark, Kaylan felt like dragging her out of the office.
"She's here." Doctor Mark said, loudly.
"I can see her," Xavier retorted, glaring at the doctor. Was he blind? Of course he can see her perfectly.
All these while, Shantel's eyes were looking down. She dare not look at the people in the room, afraid of offending them.
"Look up," Xavier commanded, his voice sounding friendly. Kaylan's eyes almost popped out of its socket. Was this the same cold Xavier?
Shantel looked up to see a devilishly handsome but cold face. He was staring at her as his eyes roamed all over her body. Then she recognized the face!
He was that same icy man she bumped into not long ago! Was he punishing her for what happened?
"You?" She asked, biting her lips.
"Yeah, it's me," Xavier smirked, getting aroused just by the way she bites her lips.
Shantel wished she didn't meet him earlier. She felt like she just bumped into bad luck today!
Kaylan, who was observing the interaction between Xavier and the girl, quickly cleared her throat.
"I am Kaylan, his wife," She said, giving Shantel a warning glare.
Shantel wanted to roll her eyes at the woman's attitude but she forced out a smile instead. Her mother's treatment lies on them.
"I am Shantel," She simply replied, wishing she could finish everything quickly.
Xavier just glanced at Kaylan who introduced herself as his wife, as if it makes a difference. But he kept quiet and faced the girl instead.
" Are you in for the deal?" Xavier asked, hoping for a positive answer.
As she was contemplating on her answer, Doctor Mark gave her a warning look and she nodded and was about to go when she heard Kaylan's voice.
"I hope you won't end up fighting for the baby which isn't yours in the future," Kaylan said, staring at her.
Shantel wanted to lash out at her but kept her cool. If it was easy why can't she bear the child? She has no one to blame but herself for being useless because if she could afford her mother's treatment, she wouldn't have agreed to such a humiliating deal.
"I won't. Besides, I don't have the guts to do so." She said, smiling bitterly.
How could she afford to do that when Xavier's piercing gaze was locked on her? She would be doomed the moment she does that!
"Umm, you can go downstairs for the test and everything. I want the results before noon and tell them I sent you. Meet with Sheila personally and she will handle everything," Doctor Mark said.
Shantel nodded, not daring to utter too many words. Then she heard the devil speaking to her again.
"I want to see you tomorrow evening. Use my card to locate the place," He said, giving her a smile.
Shantel was feeling uncomfortable whenever he looked at her.
Another person who was feeling unsatisfied and enraged deep down was Kaylan. She wasn't happy about this but she didn't retaliate.
It was Shantel who asked. "Why? What for?."
"Quit asking questions, just do as he says." Doctor Mark said.
Not wanting to offend anyone, she shrugged before agreeing," I have heard you."
Then Shantel turned around to leave the office as quickly as she came. She just can't stay a minute with either of them!
