Beyond Episode I: Chelsea's Choice / Brotherhood

1.INT. HIGHWAY. NIGHT.

Chelsea drives the family car across a lone highway somewhere in England; her eyes are swollen and red, beside her there's a tiny yellow kitten. The cat is playing with a wire; Chelsea looks at her and tries to smile. (Chelsea wears jeans and a black leather jacket).

CHELSEA OFF:

My name is Chelsea... I'm 17. (She begins to mourn) I've been driven for like a day... I have no direction... I'm just driving on a straight line... I think I go to London, but, I took the long way, I drove to the west... Because, I'm looking for people... but, it seems that someone or something just erased them.

The kitten's staring at her. A tear comes out of Chelsea's right eye.

CHELSEA:

I just drive, and drive, since... (She tickles the little yellow kitten) since... that day... when the sea took away my family... December 21, 2012...

FADE TO...

EXT. HOUSE'S COURTYARD. DAY (1 day ago)

Chelsea's family shares a barbecue in front of their house, which is located near to the beaches of the English Channel. The sun shines, no clouds in the sky, and there is a slight breeze that moves the branches of trees and rises the skirts of women.

The family station wagon has the driver's door open, the keys are in the ignition, the radio is on; the music is loud.

Chelsea's mother plays with her youngest daughter, the father cooks the meal on the grill, and Chelsea plays basketball alone near to the station wagon. She's wearing blue sport pants with the British flag on the back, and a white blouse. She uses her curly hair tied back with a ponytail and her tan skin shines with the sunlight.

Suddenly, the music stops. An electric buzz is heard.

CHELSEA OFF:

It was a regular day... We just had some fun while waiting for the Xmas's Eve... but suddenly everything changed... It was like someone had turned off the time... everything went in slow motion, and the sky turned into blue sepia... and we heard a Buzz.

All the family looks up to the sky. The basketball falls at Chelsea's feet, she does nothing to pick it up. The ground begins to move violently, it's an earthquake.

CHELSEA OFF:

The earthquake was huge... it was like being inside of a blender...

The family members are trying to hang on something. Chelsea runs to the car and holds the door that moves.

CHELSEA OFF:

...My daddy yelled something to me... but, I couldn't hear him, I think my father foresaw the worst... and that's why he told mommy: "Just run to the car"... but... I don't know why the hell... she entered to the house... (Sighs) then, I entered to the car and started it... and waited for my family... but... (Pause) my dad couldn't even walk straight because of the earthquake... He fell and rose again and again and ran clumsy...

The father tries to run to the car but he can't.

CHELSEA OFF:

Then we heard a deafening roar... It was like a thousand of buses whistling at the same time. (Pause) the sunlight began to burn the skin... I literally could see how smoke went out of my skin...

Chelsea's father is trying to protect himself of the sunlight; he hides in the trees shadows. Chelsea looks at them powerless.

CHELSEA OFF:

...In the rearview mirror of the car I saw my dad crying because of the burns' pain... the sunlight was cooking at him...

The mother leaves the house; she has a suitcase with an Ankh on it. Chelsea's father begs her to enter to the house.

CHELSEA OFF:

...My mom finally came out of the house with a small luggage in her hand... I do not know what was so important for her that she had to risk her own life to get it... (Pause) then the earthquake intensified... it wasn't normal... that was something that humanity had never seen before... (Pause) The car shuddered violently and the earthquake ends... then... the day became night... it was like God turning off the lights of the universe... after some seconds... silence... Oh God! that silence...!

The earthquake ends. Everything is dark.

The family approaches the car; Chelsea opens the door and leaves the car.

Zoom in to Chelsea's face. She is surprised by something she is seeing.

FADE TO...

2.INT. HIGHWAY. NIGHT.

Chelsea stops the car, the kitten falls to the ground. She gets out of the car. Only ruins are on either side of the road. The cat gets out too. Chelsea kneels next to the car and Begins to cry at loud.

FADE TO...

3.EXT. HOUSE'S FARMYARD. DAY (1 day ago)

CHELSEA OFF:

(Crying)

Everything went black... it was black as hell... (Pause) a huge wave covered the sky (Pause) I felt like I was in a fishbowl... then... I didn't know why but, I entered to the car and went away... I never looked back... I let my family die.

We see the action described by Chelsea.

FADE TO BLACK...

CUT TO...

4.EXT. HIGHWAY. NIGHT.

Chelsea is kneeling outside of the car. The cat is looking at her. "Meow"

CHELSEA OFF:

I wasn't thinking... I just went away and left my family behind... I think I heard how the water destroyed everything on its path (Sighs) since then; I've been driving without looking back... I've not eaten nor slept... I just drive and drive... I have not seen another human being; I've only seen destruction... (Sighs) I think I'm the last one...

Chelsea gets up and enters the car.

CHELSEA:

...the weather gets colder and colder... I want to run away from my own conscience... But, it is impossible to escape from your own thoughts... I did not cry until I saw her... (Takes the kitten in her hands and kisses it on the head)

Chelsea starts the car.

FADE TO...

5.EXT. VILLAGE. NIGHT.

Chelsea parked the car in front of a cafe. She is still wearing the short and the White blouse.

CHELSEA OFF:

The nights are darker now... in fact, the sun has hidden since that day; I think it is scared of the fury of the nature too... (Sighs) there is no electricity... or maybe there's no one to turn the lights on.

She gets off of the car and rubs her hands on her legs. She's cold.

Chelsea runs to the cafe and enters. She's looking for something to wear and finally she finds a baggage on a table. She opens the baggage and finds a jacket and a pair of jeans. She puts them on.

CUT TO...

6.INT. KITCHEN. NIGHT.

The kitchen is a mess. She's looking for something to eat. There's still food on the dishes and liquid on the cups, but all the food is rotten and the drinks are frozen.

Finally, Chelsea finds something to eat; a bag of chips. She sits and eats them.

Suddenly, she hears a noise behind her.

CHELSEA:

(Smiling)

Hi... Hi...!! (Gets up) Is someone there? My name is Chelsea... I'm from Dover... hello?

She looks at each corner of the room, there's no one, but, she can still hears a metallic sound.

In the darker corner of the kitchen there's an open cabinet, she walks to it. Something inside is throwing the dishes out.

CHELSEA:

Hi... who's in there...?

The kitten gets out of the cabinet. Chelsea smiles.

CHELSEA:

Hi... beauty... (Takes the kitten on her hands) What's your name...?

FADE TO WHITE...

FLASHBACK: Chelsea's leaving her family behind.

We see the parents of the girl floating on the water.

FADE TO WHITE...

Back in the kitchen: Chelsea dropped the cat and felt on the floor crying.

CHELSEA OFF:

That night, I cried a river... I think it was the first time I realized what I had done... I had killed my parents...

FADE TO WHITE...

After a few minutes, we see the kitten drinking water of a basin of tears. Chelsea is lying in fetal position on the floor.

CHELSEA:

(To the cat)

Your name is Hope... but there's no hope anymore...

FADE TO...

7.INT. HIGHWAY. NIGHT.

Chelsea drives her family car across the lone highway.

CHELSEA OFF:

Maybe, I'm in hell because what I've done, maybe, my family is alive and I'm dead... 'Cause I feel observed and judged by someone... I don't know who that could be... (Sighs) Maybe is God... Satan or some kind of alien... (Nervous laughs) Aliens...! I'm so desperate for contact with another intelligent living being... that... I want to see one of them.

CUT TO...

8.EXT. GAS STATION. NIGHT.

Chelsea is tanking the car. A city in the distance is calling her attention; she takes two steps forward to have a better view of that city. It's London. Chelsea smile.

CUT TO...

9.INT. WAGON. NIGHT.

Through the car windows; Chelsea sees the ruins of London. She is disappointed.

CHELSEA:

(Swats the helm of the car)

Fuck...!! FUCK!! What the hell is going on?! What the hell am I supposed to do now?!

The kitten meows.

CHELSEA:

(To the cat)

Yeah...! It's easy for you... you are just a cat...!

CUT TO...

10.EXT. WESTMISTER BRIDGE. NIGHT.

Chelsea is standing out of the car looking at the Elizabeth Tower; the earthquake did not damage the Big Ben. In the middle of the street someone wrote: "Ajuda'ma, mama". She looks at the legend, but ignores it.

Chelsea smiles roguishly and enters to the car again. From an overhead shot, we see the wagon crossing the bridge at full speed twice.

Chelsea parked the car in the middle of the bridge. She gets out of it, she looks excited and happy.

CHELSEA:

Well, if I am the last one, I'm going to enjoy it! Fuck yeah!! I'm alone!!

CUT TO...

11.INT. SHOPPING MALL. NIGHT.

Chelsea enters to a Shopping Mall with a smile on her face, and visits a motorcycle shop.

Chelsea rides a Harley Davidson through the shopping mall with Hope on her lap. She runs at low speed while is watching the windows of the clothing stores. After a while Chelsea stopped the motorcycle and smiles.

While we're listening to rock music, we see Chelsea in several clothing stores trying on everything she likes. She dances and makes the catwalk like a model in front of the mirrors. Hope plays with the clothes that Chelsea drops to the ground.

Later we see Chelsea on a Jewelry Store while she's dancing and wearing all the expensive jewels. The kitten urinates on the floor.

Now, Chelsea is on a candy store eating up all the candies that she finds in her way, the cat does the same with the crumbs falling to the ground.

FADE TO BLACK...

Chelsea lies on a sofa with Hope on her lap, surrounded by food and clothing.

The music stops.

FADE TO BLACK...

Chelsea has a nightmare. It's about leaving her family behind. In the dream; she sees her mother dying by hit her head, she also sees her father drowning in the sea.

The most disturbing part of her dream is to see her little sister dying surrounded by water.

CUT TO...

Back on the sofa, Chelsea wakes up, screaming and sweating. Hope is staring at her.

CHELSEA:

NO! NO! I'm sorry...

Chelsea kneels in front the sofa.

CHELSEA:

(Crying)

I'm sorry... I didn't mean to do it... I'm so sorry... God! Please forgive me...! I love them so much!! I didn't want to kill them...!! Sorry...!! Oh... please God...!!

The kitten sucks her leg.

CUT TO...

12.EXT. SHOPPING MALL. NIGHT.

Chelsea's still wearing jeans and the black jacket. She is taking some things out of the car and putting them on the Harley.

CHELSEA:

(To Hope)

I'm sorry... but, I've got to leave the car behind... it brings me a lot of memories... too many memories... bad memories...

The kitten is staring at her; it is almost as it knew what's happening.

CHELSEA:

I just can't think about it anymore, its killing me...

Hope tenderly covers her face with one of her paws.

CHELSEA:

I didn't mean to do it...

Hope Meows.

Chelsea takes the little cat and puts her on a small suitcase. She turns on the Harley and drives on a straight line and leaves the car behind.

CUT TO...

13.EXT. KNIEGGE'S STORE. NIGHT.

Chelsea parked the Harley outside of a mini supermarket, called "Kniegge's store". The buildings around it are almost destroyed, except for a small library, which is right next to the Store. There's a dead bonfire in the middle of the street. The girl looks inside the store through a window covered by dust.

CHELSEA:

(To hope)

There's a lot of food inside... maybe I should stay near this market for couple of days... (Puts the cat on the floor) But, I had better enter now... I am hungry and thirsty...

The cat meows.

CHELSEA:

Yeah, I know, again...

Chelsea walks to the back of the store and finds the employees' door. She tries to open it but it's latched.

CHELSEA:

Damn it!!...

Suddenly, a noise sounds behind her. She turns her head to the noise. It's Hope who is playing with a can.

CHELSEA:

(To hope)

Shhh!!

There's another noise that calls her attention. It's an electric shock.

CHELSEA:

Shhh!! Did you hear that...? It sounds like an electric shock...

Chelsea walks into a dark alley behind the store. At the end of the alley, she sees a bunch of shadows moving, it seems like people running.

CHELSEA:

Hello...? Is someone there...?

She walks slowly into the shadows.

CHELSEA:

Hello...? My name is Chelsea... I'm from Dover... I escaped from the Tsunami.

The noise is now behind her. Chelsea turns around.

CHELSEA:

Hello...?

She Returns to the employees' door. It's open. Hope is looking at her.

CHELSEA:

(To hope)

Did you see anyone? (Pause) Of course you did... well let's go inside...

CUT TO...

14.INT. CELLAR OF KNIEGGE'S STORE. NIGHT.

The hallways of the cellar are very dark. Chelsea stumbles with the shelves.

CHELSEA:

Damn!

Hope meows.

CHELSEA:

(Whispering)

Shhh...!! Someone is trying to play with us... (Screaming) But, I won't let you...! I'm not scared!!!

There's a Shadow at the end of the hallway staring at her.

CHELSEA:

Hello...?

The shadow runs away. Chelsea follows it. The person leaves the cellar through the exit door. Chelsea follows the person.

CUT TO...

15.EXT. KNIGGE'S STORE PARKING. NIGHT.

The person being followed by Chelsea disappears behind a red car.

CHELSEA:

Hey...! Wait...!

There's an electric discharge behind the car.

CHELSEA:

What the hell...?

The tail of some kind of animal appears behind the car. It looks like a pink large worm. The tail disappears after a few seconds, with another electric discharge. Chelsea runs fast.

Chelsea finally reaches the red car. Behind it; there is an open sewer, through which there's a blonde blue-eyed girl trying to run away.

CHELSEA:

(To the girl)

Hey...! Who are you??

The girl looks at Chelsea; she smiles at her and enters into the sewer.

CHELSEA:

Hey...!! Wait!!

Chelsea kneels and tries to open the sewer, but she cannot open it. It's locked from the inside.

Disappointed, Chelsea returned to the cellar where the Hope is waiting for her.

CHELSEA:

(To hope)

I don't know what the hell happened here...!!! I mean... Why did she run away from me...?

Chelsea sits on the sidewalk.

CUT TO...

16.EXT. KNIGGE'S STORE PARKING. NIGHT.

Chelsea is sleeping on the sidewalk with Hope on her lap. Two men are looking at her. They're dressed like monks with robes that cover their faces. They are whispering.

-"Who is she?"

-"I just don't know, Luigi!" The other guy answered.

- Mario, Maybe she caused the explosion...

-Maybe... who knows!

Chelsea wakes up. She screams when she sees the two men.

CHELSEA:

Who the hell are you two?? And why are you staring at me while I'm sleeping?

One of the men takes off his robe. It's just a freckled red hair teenager (15).

LUIGUI:

I'm Luigi... (Offers his hand to her)

"Don't shake her hand; we don't know who she is" Said the other guy.

LUIGUI:

But... she seems nice.

CHELSEA:

I am... I am so nice...! My name is Chelsea... I'm from Dover...

MARIO:

(Takes off his robe; Mario is just a 15 year old boy full of acne. He's got his face all bruised.)

You're lying...! No one could have survived that tsunami...

CHELSEA:

But, I did...

MARIO:

(To Luigui)

She's one of my brother's friends, Just look at her; she looks like a Goth girl.

CHELSEA:

Gosh...! I'm not Goth...!

LUIGUI:

She doesn't seem to be one of them... She's new!

MARIO:

She's new, you're right, but, Trust me... She is one of them...!

CHELSEA:

What are you talking about?? I'm not one of your brother's friends...! I just don't know him... I'm friendly... I told you, I'm from Dover...

MARIO:

The wave destroyed the entire coast... you can't be a survivor... The tsunami kills them all...

LUIGUI:

We don't know that for sure.

MARIO:

We do! Google told me...

LUIGUI:

But, he could be wrong.

MARIO:

Maybe... but, I don't trust her.

CHELSEA:

LUIGUI:

She's right, bro, you're being hasty!

MARIO:

Shut up! You moron! She's not a survivor because the meteor destroyed all the coastal cities.

LUIGUI:

It was not a meteor... it was an electromagnetic pulse...

MARIO:

What? No! It was a Meteor.

LUIGUI:

MARIO:

LUIGUI:

(Looking at the sky)

MARIO:

Aliens don't exist...

CHELSEA:

Ok... Ok... Shut up you two!! I'm not one of the sewer's people...! I am from Dover! I did survive from the Tsunami!

LUIGUI:

Wow... wow... Which sewer's people...?!

CHELSEA:

You know, the girl...

MARIO:

I knew it... my brother and his weird friends are trying to enter to our store... (To Luigui) Told you! They will try to steal all the food.

CHELSEA:

What's going on here?

MARIO:

We are at war!

CHELSEA:

War...?

A 14 year old redhead girl came out of the cellar.

GALE:

They stole the Doritos!

MARIO:

Those weirdoes... (To Chelsea) When you fell asleep, was the door open?

CHELSEA:

Yeah! I was inside the store! I saw a girl inside!

LUIGUI:

Maybe, it was Michelle... They found another key!

MARIO:

We have to check out the money!

LUIGUI:

You're right! Let's go!

Everyone runs inside the store.

CHELSEA:

(To Hope)

I think we were better off alone...

Hope Meows.

17.INT. OFFICE. NIGHT.

Chelsea, Gale and Luigui are waiting, while Mario opens the office's door.

Luigi looks at her from top to bottom.

LUIGUI:

So, what are you? Are you "Emo"?

CHELSEA:

(Laughs)

Ouch!! I'm not Emo! (Sigh) but you... you are some kind of a priest, or a freemason?

LUIGUI:

Well, actually, my dad is... well, was a Freemason

Mario opens the door. Inside the office there's a bunch of kids between 12 to 15 years old. In the middle of the office there's a safe jealously guarded by the kids.

Chelsea enters to the office after Gale and Luigui.

CHELSEA:

(To Mario)

Where are all the adults?
