Chapter 1
The sun slowly set behind the mountains, casting long, mysterious shadows across the wooded paths Lyra took. The air was cool, stinging her skin slightly as she took steps, each step bringing her a little closer to the pack she had left three years ago. His heart was pounding, a mixture of nervousness, anger, and apprehension fighting to dominate his thoughts. Everything here seemed unchanged, but inside her, everything was different.
She took a deep breath, remembering why she had come back. Three years of silence, solitude, personal reconstruction. She had to leave everything, abandon the security of the pack, of her family, to rebuild herself abroad, far from betrayals, far from those who had abandoned her. And now she was coming back, forced by circumstances she would have liked to avoid.
As soon as she arrived at the gates of the pack, she felt eyes turn towards her, curious, suspicious eyes, as if they were seeing a ghost. She straightened up, keeping an impassive mask on her face. She wasn't going to show them how much this hurt her, how much it hurt to be here. She would not give them this satisfaction.
She walked along the main path to the family home, a large wooden chalet, surrounded by majestic pines. The flickering light from the lamps peeked through the windows, forming familiar, reassuring shapes. Inside, the faces of his loved ones waited for him, each with a different expression. She tried to remain stoic, even as she saw her half-sister, Luna, staring at her with a smirk. Luna... the one who had broken his trust and pushed him into this exile. Lyra felt almost paralyzed, as if her half-sister's betrayal was still fresh, burning.
But that evening, she hadn't come to settle scores with Luna. A soft, but tired voice pulled her from her thoughts.
"Lyra, my darling, you are finally back. »
She turned around and saw her grandmother, frailer than she remembered. With a pale complexion and trembling hands, her grandmother no longer had that strong and indestructible appearance of the past. Lyra felt her heart tighten, a wave of emotion washing over her.
"Grandma..."
She approached, taking the old woman's hands in hers. The touch of his cold skin made her shiver. "What's happening to you? »
Her grandmother gave a tired smile. "Old age, my little one... but it's good that you're here now. I need you. »
Lyra frowned, a mixture of worry and anger taking over her. "Why did you bring me back? I was good where I was. Why call me back now? »
She knew the question would seem cruel, but she couldn't suppress her resentment. She had fled to escape the plots, the power games, and now she found herself embroiled again in this dysfunctional family.
The old woman looked down, as if ashamed. "Because there is something more important than our quarrels, Lyra. I need you to marry the Alpha. »
A heavy silence settled in, heavy, almost suffocating. Lyra felt her stomach drop. She searched for words, but they eluded her, slipping between her thoughts like grains of sand.
"Arranged marriage? » she finally whispered, her voice trembling with indignation. "I'm supposed to come back and just accept this? »
Her grandmother nodded slowly, as if the answer was obvious. "Yes, for the sake of the family. You know how vulnerable the pack is without a strong alliance. There is no one else who can take on this role. »
Lyra felt anger boiling within her, but she also knew that refusing was a decision she could not afford. Her grandmother, as ill as she was, had always been an important figure in her life, and she asked for this sacrifice because the situation must have been truly desperate.
"Very well," she said finally, with cold determination. "I will marry the Alpha, for the good of the pack. But don't think for a moment that I have forgotten what this family did to me. »
She felt Luna's gaze on her, a spark of contempt in her eyes, but she ignored it. She tried to keep her head held high, not to let the rage and injustice that was tearing her apart show through.
Later that evening, Lyra slipped away for some alone time. She sat outside, under an old oak tree that had been her refuge in her childhood, where she often went to hide to escape arguments and family pressures. She looked up at the sky, seeking some comfort in the brightness of the stars.
As she tried to calm her thoughts, a deep, deep voice spoke from behind her. "So you are the famous Lyra. »
She jumped, turning around to face an imposing man with harsh features and an intimidating aura. It wasn't Finn, the one she had loved and who had betrayed her. It was someone else, a stranger. His gaze was dark, piercing, as if searching his soul.
"And you, are you the Alpha? » she replied, hiding her surprise behind a confident tone.
He gave an amused smile. " Indeed. My name is Xavier. I am here to take back what is rightfully mine. »
She stared at him, searching his unfathomable eyes for answers. Xavier was far from the image she had created. He didn't have Finn's seductive and treacherous look. No, he was of another type, more formidable, more impenetrable. She couldn't help but feel a sort of fascination, mixed with a dull apprehension.
"So, Xavier, what do you expect from me? » she said, lifting her chin to hide her confusion.
He held her gaze, an enigmatic smile stretching his lips. "That you play your part, Lyra. This marriage is much more than just a union. It is a pact, an alliance which will strengthen my position and which will give you a place that no one can contest. »
She felt her heart beat faster, a glint of defiance lighting up in her eyes. "What if I refuse? »
His smile widened, but his gaze grew colder. "You have a choice, of course. But your family is in a critical situation, and you know as well as I that this marriage is their only chance of survival. »
The silence fell again, heavy. She then understood that this marriage was not a simple formality. It was a game of power, a chessboard on which everyone had to place their pieces carefully. She also understood that she could use this situation to her advantage, not only to help her family, but also to obtain justice, to avenge the wounds inflicted by those who had betrayed her.
"Very well," she whispered, a glint of determination in her eyes. "I'll play along. But know one thing, Xavier: I'm not a docile pawn. If you want me to be on your side, you'll have to earn my respect too. »
He tilted his head, his intense gaze never leaving hers. "I expected nothing less from you, Lyra. »
As he walked away, she stood there, alone under the starry sky, thoughts swirling in her mind. She knew that the path ahead would be strewn with pitfalls, sacrifices and difficult choices. But for the first time in a long time, she felt a glimmer of hope, a possibility of renewal.
In his heart, anger and resentment still simmered, but now they were tinged with a strange impatience, a thirst for revenge. She promised herself that she would take advantage of this marriage, not to submit, but to claim what she deserved, to become much more than just the Alpha's bride.
And so, Lyra began her return to the pack, determined to prove that she would not be broken or manipulated again.
Chapter 2
The first meeting with Alpha Xavier had not taken place under ideal circumstances, and even less so in a setting where Lyra could have maintained some semblance of control. She had only been back a few hours, and already the weight of the looks, the whispers and the insinuations followed her like a shadow. She had expected to find Finn, the Alpha who had betrayed her. But the man she had seen under the oak the day before was not the man she had known.
That morning, the sun had barely risen, and she had only slept fitfully. She couldn't get the image of this man out of her head. His intense gaze, so different from those she had encountered until then, haunted her. She knew it was no longer about Finn. Another Alpha now occupied the throne of the pack, a man as mysterious as he was imposing. This Xavier.
She got up, drew the curtain of her small window and stared at the expanse of the forest, as if to give herself courage. A servant had come to tell her earlier that she was expected in the great council room to formalize the engagement. Lyra grimaced. She wished she had more time, a chance to prepare, but it wasn't happening. Here, everything moved quickly, as if his absence had never been noticed.
So she took a deep breath, put on a dark, elegant dress, and walked out of her room, her eyes proud and her heart heavy. The pack's home echoed with the sound of his heels on the floor. She had no right to appear weak. Not now.
When she entered the council room, she immediately felt the energy change. A palpable tension hung in the air, and all eyes turned towards her. She met Luna's gaze, an almost mocking smile on her lips, but she didn't give him another moment. No, his eyes instinctively landed on the figure who dominated the assembly: Xavier.
He stood there, back straight, arms crossed, with this aura that seemed to defy any attempt at approach. He wore simple, almost austere clothes, but it was his posture and his gaze that made him imposing. Lyra felt her heart speed up despite herself. She had never seen a man like him. His presence filled the room almost suffocatingly, and yet he hadn't even said a word.
She moved forward slowly, each step bringing her closer to him. She tried to read his gaze, but he seemed impassive, as if nothing around him mattered in the slightest. It was a cold, calculating look, but also deeply captivating. He looked at her in detail, and she knew he was evaluating her, measuring every detail of her posture, every emotion she let show.
Lyra decided not to flinch. She lifted her chin and stared straight into his eyes, refusing to look away despite the intimidating weight of his. "So you are the Alpha," she whispered, breaking the silence.
A thin, almost imperceptible smile appeared on Xavier's lips. "And you, you are the one chosen for me as my bride. »
His voice was deep, calm, each word spoken with disconcerting precision. She felt a shiver run through her skin. "I'm Lyra," she replied, refusing to be impressed. "And I'm not here to be just another piece in a power game. »
He raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. " Interesting. And what do you want then? »
She clenched her fists, feeling anger rising. This man seemed to be the epitome of the authoritarian and distant Alpha, one who viewed others as mere pawns. "I want a life that has meaning," she replied, defying the glare in his eyes.
Xavier appraised her for a moment, a glint of amusement crossing his dark eyes. "A meaningful life, you say? And how do you plan to find that here, in this pack you left? »
She felt a pang of pain at this remark. He was right, of course. She was gone, leaving behind broken promises and broken bonds. But she wasn't going to show him. "That," she said sharply, "is only my business. »
He tilted his head slightly, as if to examine this challenge she was throwing at him. " Alright. I don't intend to hinder you, Lyra. But know one thing: in this pack, the interests of the group come before those of the individual. And if you hope to keep your place, you will have to accept it. »
Lyra's gaze didn't blink. She understood his words, but she also felt that he was not telling her everything. He was testing her, observing her reactions, trying to find out how far she would go. She decided not to play his game, to stay on the defensive, at least for now.
"That suits me," she said matter-of-factly. "As long as you respect me, I have no reason to challenge you. »
Xavier's gaze barely softened, but she noticed this slight change. "We'll see." »
He then held out his hand to her, a sign that the engagement ceremony was about to begin. Lyra hesitated for a moment, feeling the warmth of his palm, then she placed her hand in his. The contact of his skin against hers gave her a strange shiver, but she kept her face impassive. The other members of the pack were watching closely, and she knew that the slightest weakness would be seen as an admission of submission.
The silence grew heavier as the Pack Elder stepped forward to seal their union. Lyra and Xavier stood side by side, their symbolic bond spoken in ritual words. Throughout the ceremony, she felt Xavier's presence like a powerful, implacable shadow. She did not yet know how to interpret this strange connection between them, but she already felt that this man was going to shake up her existence far beyond what she could have imagined.
At the end, when they were officially engaged, the crowd applauded soberly, and Lyra was able to release the pressure. She gently removed her hand from Xavier's, but not before feeling the slight tightening of his fingers around hers, as if he wanted to send her a message, a silent warning.
"Lyra," he whispered as they stood alone, away from the crowd. "I know you are here with your own goals. But remember, you are on my territory here. »
She stared at him, feeling the fire of anger and defiance in his eyes. "And I advise you not to underestimate me, Alpha. »
Xavier burst into a short, almost imperceptible laugh. "I see that our partnership will not be easy. »
She gave a cold smile. "Don't expect me to be a docile bride." »
They looked at each other for a moment, each gauging the intentions and strengths of the other. Then, without another word, Xavier turned on his heel and walked away, leaving her alone in the middle of the room.
Lyra felt her heart beating furiously in her chest. This first exchange had been much more intense than she had imagined. She had felt the magnetic attraction that emanated from him, but she also knew that Xavier represented a much greater danger than she could have anticipated. He was the Alpha, the absolute leader of this pack, and he was not the man to let anyone destabilize him.
However, Lyra felt a fierce determination within her. She would not allow herself to be crushed by his authority. She knew that this arranged marriage was not a simple pact. It was the beginning of a power game, a dance between strength and defiance, where each would seek to gain the advantage without losing themselves in the dangerous attraction that already linked them.
Chapter 3
Lyra wandered through the corridors of the house, trying to calm the storm that was brewing inside her. The engagement ceremony left a bitter taste, and she still felt the pressure of Xavier's hand on her skin. This was all a power play, and she intended to master it. But before embarking on any strategy, there was a confrontation she had to face.
At the corner of a corridor, she saw a familiar silhouette, a silhouette that awakened bitter and painful memories in her. Her half-sister, Luna, stood there leaning against the wall with a smirk. She had obviously been waiting for Lyra, like a predator watching for its prey. Lyra felt anger rising, but she forced herself to remain calm. Luna knew exactly how to press on her weaknesses, and this meeting wouldn't be a simple chat between sisters.
"So, you're back." Finally. » Luna's voice was icy, honeyed. "I admit that I bet you would never come back. »
Lyra advanced without a word, her gaze hard and implacable. She wouldn't allow Luna to see the impact his words still had on her, even after all these years. "I'm not here to put on a show for you, Luna. If you think you can reach me with your remarks, you are wrong. »
Luna shrugged her shoulders, looking falsely innocent. "Oh, I know you're tougher than that, Lyra. Otherwise, you wouldn't have survived our last encounter, would you? » She gave him a venomous smile. "But it must be said that you have changed a lot... or maybe it's just a facade. »
Lyra felt anger boiling, but she controlled it. This confrontation was inevitable, and it was not going to allow Luna to gain the upper hand. "Three years of exile have taught me a lot of things," she replied sharply. "I am no longer the naive young girl you thought I was manipulating. »
"That's it," Luna replied, rolling her eyes, with a mocking smile. "I can't wait to see how long this new attitude lasts. You know, the pack needs strength, pure blood... and I doubt you're up to the task. »
Lyra's heart sank at these words. She was well aware of the ideals of purity that her family fiercely defended. She had always been made to feel inferior, like an outsider within her own pack. But she wouldn't let Luna make her doubt herself, not this time.
"You might think I'm going to be controlled by your schemes, Luna," she replied, standing up straight, her eyes locked on her half-sister's, "but you're wrong. I accepted this marriage for my grandmother, not for you, nor for your little games. »
Luna looked at her with a glint of sick satisfaction in her eyes. "Oh, I know why you came back, Lyra. Do you think I don't know about your past relationship with Finn? About how you felt about him before everything fell apart? » She approached Lyra, a cruel smile on her lips. "This marriage is perfect, actually. You will be forced to stay, to serve the interests of the pack, whether you like it or not. »
Lyra felt her throat tighten at the mention of Finn. The memory of her former humiliation, of Finn's betrayal, overwhelmed her for a moment, but she crushed it mercilessly. She wouldn't show any signs of weakness in front of Luna.
"You can try to manipulate me all you want," she replied coldly. "But I have changed. And you don't know anything about how I feel today. »
Luna scrutinized her for a moment, her gaze as piercing as a dagger. " Really ? Do you think I don't see what you've become? A puppet, ready to marry an Alpha she doesn't even know for the good of the pack. It's only a matter of time before you break under the pressure. »
Lyra clenched her fists, but she didn't give in. "Maybe," she whispered defiantly. "But I'm not the same as before. And know that I have no intention of playing your game."
Luna smiled, amused. "You think you have free choice, Lyra, but I orchestrated this marriage. It's no coincidence that Xavier was chosen as Alpha to betroth you. I knew you would come back to protect the family's interests... and you fell right into my trap. »
The shock of this revelation made Lyra waver for a moment. She knew her half-sister was cunning, but she never imagined she could go this far. "So you're the one who manipulated the situation? »
"Oh, I didn't handle anything," Luna replied, shrugging nonchalantly. "I simply made the right decisions to ensure the safety of our bloodline. But now that you're here, you better get ready. Xavier is a powerful Alpha, much more formidable than Finn. Do you think you can handle being tied to him, day after day? »
Lyra forced herself to remain calm. She had underestimated Luna's influence, but she didn't intend to let her triumph. She realized that there was still much to discover about her family's schemes and her half-sister's true intentions.
"This wedding isn't going to go the way you hope," she whispered coldly. "Xavier and I... we are not your pawns. »
Luna burst out laughing, a cruel and contemptuous laugh. "Do you believe you have the power to change anything, Lyra? It's too late. You were brought back here for one reason: to do as you were told. You have no choice, no power. »
Lyra felt the adrenaline rush, and a determined smile stretched across her lips. She had just understood that she had to fight back. This marriage, which was to bind her to the wishes of her family, would become her own tool of revenge.
"Don't be so sure, Luna," she whispered, her voice filled with suppressed rage. "I am no longer the girl you once broke. I'm going to use this marriage, and you'll find out how wrong you were about me. »
Luna's eyes narrowed, and her smile faded slightly. She hadn't expected this reaction from Lyra, and this glint of defiance made her visibly uncomfortable.
"Believe what you want," she said as she sat up, hiding her annoyance behind an impassive facade. "But don't forget that Xavier is much more dangerous than you think. If you're going to get revenge, make sure you don't get burned. »
Lyra did not look down, defying her sister to the end. She knew that this confrontation was only a foretaste of the battles to come. Her family had brought her back for use, but she was going to turn this situation into her own weapon. She was no longer going to let herself be manipulated, neither by Luna nor by Xavier.
"Thank you for the advice," she replied wryly. "But this time, it's me who decides the rules of the game."
Without waiting for a response, she turned on her heel, leaving Luna behind, and walked quickly out of the hallway. Her heart was beating furiously, and she felt anger and determination filling her with new energy.
She knew now that she was alone in this fight, but she was not afraid. Her family, her pack, even this imposing Alpha... They were going to discover the real Lyra, the one who had nothing left to lose. She had been humiliated, broken in the past, but today, she was reborn from her ashes, ready to fight for her freedom and her honor.
