Introduction

I had everything planned for the Starlight Foundation Gala.

A new suit for me, a tiny dress for our daughter, Lily, and a stunning gown for my wife, Scarlett Hayes.

Lily was buzzing, clutching her dress. "Daddy, is Mommy coming with us?" she asked, her eyes wide with hope.

Then the call. Scarlett' s voice, cold and distant: "Promises can be broken when a career is on the line."

She hung up, leaving Lily's hopeful gaze to dim into familiar sadness.

My heart sank, but I vowed she wouldn' t ruin another night for our daughter.

Later, at the glittering gala, the host introduced a woman who represented "family, success, and pure talent."

My blood froze.

Scarlett

She emerged, radiant, on stage. But not alone.

Jake Peterson, her ex, held her hand. And a boy, Lily' s age, held his.

The host gushed, "Scarlett, you and your partner Jake are an inspiration! How do you balance such a successful career with being such a devoted mother and partner?"

Scarlett laughed, looking at Jake. "It's all about priorities. They are my world."

My world. The words echoed, a punch to my gut.

Lily whispered, "Daddy, why is Mommy with them? Who is that little boy?"

Rage, cold and sharp, cut through my shock.

This wasn' t a last-minute shoot. This was a calculated, public betrayal.

I stood up, ready to confront her, my daughter clutching my jacket.

"Scarlett." I demanded, "Who are these people? What is this?"

Her brief panic vanished. "I have no idea who you are," she said, dripping with false sympathy.

"Security, please escort this man and the child out. He's scaring my son."

The crowd erupted, jeering at me. My wife had erased us.

As guards moved in, her lips formed two silent words: "The clause."

Then my phone buzzed. A text from Scarlett: "This is for the show. Play along."

A bitter laugh escaped me. Play along? No.

She had chosen fame over family, a lie over love.

She had crossed a line. And I was no longer heartbroken. I was resolved.

She wanted a scene? I would give her a war. I would burn her fake world to the ground.

Chapter 1

I had everything planned for the Starlight Foundation Gala tonight. I picked out a new suit, a small one for my daughter, Lily, and even a dress for my wife, Scarlett Hayes.

"Daddy, is Mommy coming with us?" Lily asked, her eyes wide with hope. She was clutching the sparkling dress I' d bought for her.

I smiled and dialed Scarlett' s number. "Let's ask her."

The phone rang for a long time before she picked up. Her voice was distant, impatient.

"Ethan, what is it? I'm busy."

"Hey, honey. Just wanted to remind you about the Gala tonight. Lily is really excited to go with you."

There was a short, sharp sigh on the other end. "I can't. I have a last-minute shoot for the new reality show. It's crucial for my image."

"Another one?" I tried to keep the disappointment out of my voice. "Scarlett, you promised Lily."

"Promises can be broken when a career is on the line," she said coldly. "You wouldn't understand. Just take her yourself. I have to go."

She hung up before I could say another word.

I looked down at Lily, whose face had fallen. The bright excitement in her eyes had dimmed, replaced by a familiar sadness. Her small shoulders slumped.

"Mommy's not coming, is she?" she whispered.

My heart ached for her. This wasn't the first time. It was a pattern. Scarlett, a famous actress, always prioritized her public image and career over her family. Her ambition was a fire that burned everything else around it.

"No, sweetie," I said, kneeling down to her level. "She has to work. But that's okay. It just means I get to have the prettiest girl at the party all to myself."

I forced a cheerful tone, and Lily managed a small, weak smile. It didn't quite reach her eyes.

I decided then and there that we would still go. I wouldn't let Scarlett's absence ruin another night for our daughter. We would go, we would have fun, and I would show Lily that she was the most important person in my world, no matter what.

"Come on," I said, taking her hand. "Let's go show everyone how amazing you look in that dress."

The Gala was held at a grand hotel, glittering with lights and filled with the most influential people in the city. Cameras flashed everywhere. We walked in, and I held Lily' s hand tightly. She was a little intimidated by the crowd, but she held her head high.

We found our table, and I got her a glass of juice. For a while, things were fine. We watched the presentations, and I pointed out some of the famous people she recognized from movies.

Then the main event of the evening began. The host walked on stage with a wide, practiced smile.

"And now, let's give a huge welcome to a woman who represents family, success, and pure talent! The star of the upcoming reality series, 'A Star's Home'-the incredible Scarlett Hayes and her wonderful family!"

My blood ran cold. I froze, my eyes locked on the stage.

Scarlett walked out from behind the curtain, beaming under the spotlights. She was wearing a stunning gown, a vision of elegance.

But she wasn't alone.

Holding her hand was a man I recognized with a jolt of nausea: Jake Peterson, her ex-boyfriend. And holding Jake's hand was a young boy about Lily's age. The three of them stood together, waving to the cheering crowd. They looked like the perfect, happy family.

The host gushed, "Scarlett, you and your partner Jake are an inspiration! And your son is just adorable. Tell us, how do you balance such a successful career with being such a devoted mother and partner?"

Scarlett laughed, a sound that was suddenly ugly to my ears. She leaned into the microphone. "It's all about priorities," she said, looking lovingly at Jake. "When you have a supportive partner like Jake, and a wonderful son, everything else just falls into place. They are my world."

My world. The words echoed in the massive ballroom, but they felt like a direct blow to my chest. I looked down at Lily. Her small face was pale, her eyes wide with confusion and hurt. She was looking at the woman on stage, her mother, who was holding another child's hand and calling another man her partner.

"Daddy," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Why is Mommy with them? Who is that little boy?"

Rage, cold and sharp, cut through my shock. The humiliation was a physical thing, crawling over my skin in front of hundreds of people, in front of our daughter. This wasn't a last-minute shoot. This was a calculated, public betrayal.

I stood up. I didn't care about the cameras, the crowd, or the consequences. I had to know. I had to make her answer for this.

I started walking toward the stage, with Lily holding onto my jacket. The crowd parted, some people looking at me with curiosity, others with annoyance. I reached the front row, just below the stage, and looked up at my wife.

"Scarlett."

My voice was quiet, but it cut through the applause. She heard me. Her smile faltered for a fraction of a second. She saw me, and she saw Lily standing beside me.

I asked the question that was tearing me apart.

"Who are these people, Scarlett? What is this?"

Chapter 2

The crowd around me started to murmur. My question hung in the air, a stark contrast to the celebratory mood. People turned to look at me, their expressions shifting from admiration for Scarlett to annoyance and disdain for me.

"Who is that guy?" someone whispered loudly.

"Probably some crazy fan. Get some security."

On stage, Scarlett' s brief flash of panic was gone as quickly as it came. She composed herself, her face becoming a mask of confusion and pity. Jake Peterson stepped forward, putting a protective arm around her. He looked down at me with a condescending smirk.

"Sir, I think you're mistaken," Jake said smoothly into the microphone. "You're disrupting a private event. Please leave before we have to call security."

He was playing the part of the noble protector, the innocent man defending his family from a madman. The crowd ate it up, nodding in agreement.

But I wasn't looking at him. My eyes were locked on Scarlett.

"Scarlett, answer me," I insisted, my voice getting louder. "What are you doing? Who is this man? Lily is standing right here."

I gestured to our daughter, who was hiding behind my legs, her small hands clutching my pants. The cameras zoomed in, capturing her frightened face.

Scarlett finally looked at me directly. There was no recognition in her eyes, only a cold dismissal.

"I have no idea who you are," she said, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "You're clearly confused. Security, please escort this man and the child out. He's scaring my son."

She pulled Jake and his son closer, a perfect picture of a threatened family. The crowd gasped, their murmurs turning into open hostility toward me.

"Get him out of here!"

"He's a pyscho! Bringing a kid into it, how sick!"

"Poor Scarlett, having to deal with creeps like this."

The host was frantically signaling for guards. The humiliation was suffocating. She had not just disowned me; she had erased me. In front of the world, she had declared that I, her husband, and Lily, her daughter, did not exist.

As the guards started moving toward me, Scarlett' s eyes met mine again. For a split second, the mask slipped. I saw the cold, calculating woman I was just beginning to understand. Her lips barely moved, but I saw the two words she formed, meant only for me.

"The clause."

My mind raced. The pre-nuptial agreement. There was a "reconciliation clause" she had insisted on. It stated that in the event of a public dispute or scandal caused by either party, the other would be entitled to a massive financial settlement. She was trying to manipulate me, to silence me with the threat of financial ruin. She thought our marriage was a business contract she could leverage.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out. A text from an unsaved number, but I knew who it was.

Ethan, don't be stupid. This is for the show. It' s for my career. Play along. You know what the agreement says. Don't make a scene and we can talk about this later. This is our chance to be set for life.

Her words were a confession and a threat wrapped in one. She wasn't just faking a family for a reality show; she was using my company' s resources, my money, to fund this charade, all while holding a legal knife to my throat. The pain in my chest, the hot sting of betrayal, suddenly cooled into something hard and unyielding.

I looked from the text message back to her on the stage. She was smiling at the crowd, accepting their sympathy, while Jake stood beside her, looking triumphant. They were partners in this deceit.

A bitter laugh escaped my lips. It was quiet, but it was real.

Talk about it later? Play along?

No.

There would be no later. There would be no playing along. She had made her choice. She had chosen fame over family, a lie over love. She had publicly disowned her own child for a TV show.

She had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.

I put my phone away. The guards were getting closer. The crowd was jeering. But I was no longer humiliated. I was no longer heartbroken.

I was resolved.

She wanted a scene? I would give her a war. I would burn her fake world to the ground.
