Mike and Mika ran away from the supermarket employees. They slipped between the mall patrons without showing their frightened faces. In each hand, the five-year-olds held a large chocolate bar.
A group of people moved opposite the twins. In front led a tall, well-built man with a charming face and a cold expression. Following him, a group of men with uneasy faces.
At one point they met. The two children bumped into the man leading the group and hid behind him while holding the hem of his coat.
"Daddy, they're chasing us!" Mike exclaimed while pointing at two supermarket employees whose faces immediately turned pale.
The man was not a random person. Everyone in the neighborhood knew him. He was Cade Goldwin, the richest businessman in the town of Axton.
The man didn't like foreign touches. So his face was suddenly grim when he felt small hands grasping the hem of his suit. He stopped walking and looked down.
Cade was about to say something cold and sharp to repel the two boys, but seeing the smile on the cute face, he suddenly decided against it. Everything about that boy was like he had seen it before.
"Daddy." Mika pulled and shook the big arm. "Don't you recognize us?"
Cade was a man of few words. He had never lost his ability to speak like he did when he saw these two children. After a moment he knew he saw himself in both of them. Especially the boy, Cade saw an image of himself as a child.
"Sir, that child, they-" One of the employees stammered. Mr. Goldwin was known to be the most dreamed bachelor of Axton city women. There was never any news that he had a child out of wedlock. But perhaps he had recently adopted some children. Who knows?
"What's the matter?" Cade said coldly, making the two employees chasing Mike and Mika feel their knees tremble.
"They just stole-"
The truth must be told, right? The lanky employee decided to tell the truth even though he had to speak in disjointed sentences.
"You heard what they called me. This place belongs to me. They're free to take anything." Although he didn't hear any comments around him because everyone was so afraid of making a mistake, Cade knew that everyone was wondering.
Cade himself was surprised by his decision to protect these two children. He never tolerated cheating even if it was done by a child.
Behind him, the boy looked up at Cade with a satisfied smile. They had succeeded in the first step of winning over this great man.
Langdon, Cade's assistant looked at his master with curiosity. He knew his master was speculating about something.
But these two boys did look a lot like Cade Goldwin. No one would deny it.
"Daddy, we won't bother you anymore. We're leaving." Mike released his grip on the hem of Cade's suit.
Almost simultaneously, Mika reluctantly let go of Cade's hand.
Mike had turned to leave when he stopped his movement. "O, I have something for Daddy."
Everyone watched as the boy took out a folded paper from his jacket pocket and held it out to Cade. The man hesitated before moving his hand to accept.
Before the paper was opened, both children had turned around and ran away without looking back.
Cade unfolded the paper which turned out to be a photo. There was a view of him sleeping on the bed.
Cade's heart seemed to stop, but his expression was very calm.
This had something to do with that night six years ago.
All eyes looked curiously at Cade. Even though they knew their curiosity would never be resolved.
Cade turned over the photo sheet and found simple handwriting.
'If this photo arrives in your hands, it only means that these children have lost their mother.'
"Langdon, get someone to investigate those kids," Cade said quickly as he put the photo into his coat pocket. He didn't believe in coincidences like this.
"Yes, sir." Langdon nodded respectfully and called out to the person standing at the back of the group. Speaking in a low voice the person could not be heard clearly by the people around them.
Cade raised his face to stare straight ahead. Right now, he didn't have time to recall the incident. So, he moved on and continued his visit to the mall.
Fortunately, no reporters were watching. Axton City would have been in an uproar when that part of Cade's past was revealed and exposed in the media.
In another part of the mall.
Fay looked anxiously around. For a few minutes, her heart felt out of place.
The three of them were looking around the playground. Just looking around. Because they didn't have the money to buy an entrance ticket. Then suddenly the two children disappeared.
At first Fay thought, she would find them on one of the playground equipment. But Mike and Mika were nowhere to be found in the playground.
Panic gripped Fay's heart. She started cursing the two children for not staying still for a moment and cursed herself for letting her guard down. She knew from the start that Mike and Mika were not easy children to handle.
Fortunately, when the panic reached its highest point, Fay saw the shadows of the two children running into the playground. It felt like every bone in Fay's body was being dissolved. She was suddenly like soft jelly and almost fell from weakness. Relief can make a person lose strength.
"Mommy!" Mike and Mika exclaimed simultaneously.
"We met Daddy." Mike panted in between his words.
"Mommy, we met daddy. He gave us chocolate." Mika held up a large chocolate bar in her hand.
That wasn't quite right. But it couldn't be said to be wrong either. They had picked it up at a supermarket to cause a commotion in the direction of a passing party.
They searched the internet for information about Cade Goldwin once they got the secret. Before she died their mother gave it to them and told them to keep it from Fay Wilmer, the girl they now called Mommy.
"Mommy will throw a tantrum." That was Mike's constant reminder whenever Mika thought Fay should be told.
Maybe she would come after Cade for making Audrey, the twins' mother, suffer and then kill him. But it wouldn't be Cade Goldwin who would be killed. He's a man who can't be touched. It was the ruler of the city of Axton who would probably kill Fay.
So they had to refrain from telling Fay for their mommy's safety.
"Never mind. Stop playing around. I almost went to the security post and asked them to announce your disappearance." Fay hugged the two boys with a heart that still couldn't calm down.
But only for a moment. As soon as she noticed the chocolates clutched in the two boys' hands, Fay felt her heart almost fall to the floor.
"Where did you get these chocolates?" Fay shook the two boys' shoulders. She widened her eyes angrily. "You're stealing?"
"Mommy, I told you that Daddy gave them to us." Mika was terrified. She had never seen Fay that angry.
Fay shook her head. "No, I didn't. No way. You're lying!"
How could Fay believe her?
"Mika is right, Mommy. We're not lying. We met Daddy earlier." Mike tried to explain. He was calmer than his sister
"Stop playing around, I said!" Fay got up from her crouch and tugged on both boys' arms.
They didn't have the money to pay for the chocolates. There was no way they could meet their father. How could they know each other if they never knew each other existed? It was all in the imaginations of children who longed for a father.
Mike and Mika were pulled towards a supermarket. Mika winced as her hand was gripped too tightly. Upon entering the supermarket, Fay asked a cashier if the two children had paid for the chocolates.
The cashier was a little confused. But she had just heard a horrendous rumor a few minutes ago about a pair of twins. She called the colleague who had been on the chase.
"Miss, these children don't pay, but their father does. So there's no problem. Mr. Goldwin even said that he can take anything." The employee slightly changed Cade Goldwin's words but the meaning remained the same.
Mr. Goldwin? The famous Cade Goldwin?
Fay was astonished. And confused. Don't tell her that these twins were related to that man. She couldn't imagine it. Something must have gone wrong here!
"You said their father? Mr. Goldwin?" Fay tilted her head, thinking she had heard wrong.
"Yeah, I think so. We weren't very clear either. But they both call Mr. Goldwin 'daddy'." The employee didn't quite understand the situation either. But he didn't want to take any chances. He heard Mr. Goldwin's words for himself.
Fay looked down at Mike and Mika. The two children were looking up at her. Mike nodded in confirmation of the employee's words.
Fay's head suddenly became dizzy. She massaged her head with one hand.
"All right. I think that's enough for today. I want to hear your explanation at home."
Fay turned around. Ignoring the two children, she walked out of the supermarket. Mike and Mika hurriedly followed behind. The two looked at each other occasionally.
Danger! That was the signal Mike threw at his sister.
I know, Mommy must be very angry. Mika returned the gesture with trepidation.
Not a single word came out of either of their mouths. They just continued to follow Fay who also kept her mouth shut all the way home.
Once at the apartment, Fay flopped down on the sofa. Mike and Mika sat down too. The two of them elbowed each other for a while before, as usual, Mike finally opened up.
"Mommy gave us a picture of Daddy."
What, a picture of the man who had made Audrey's life miserable? Audrey said she didn't have any proof.
"Our mommy didn't tell you because she didn't want you to meet Daddy and act stupid." Mike continued and spoke as if he would do smarter than Fay.
"So, where's the picture now? Give it to me?" Fay held out one hand to both kids.
Mike shook his head. "It's not with us."
"Gone?" Fay was curious about the picture. Maybe these two kids had recognized the wrong person! She was also curious about Audrey's decision to leave these two little hooligans but keep an important piece of evidence from her. Did she look that stupid?
"We heard that Daddy will be visiting Royal Town today. We already gave him the photo." Mike told the truth and flashed a slight smile at the obvious curiosity on Fay's face.
"Aah!" Fay clenched her hands into fists. Not knowing who to direct her annoyance at.
"So, what did that damn man say?" Fay cursed at Cade Goldwin in front of his two flesh and blood whose brows immediately furrowed upon hearing the harsh words.
"Mommy, you can't say rude things about daddy." Mika now couldn't resist reprimanding. Their mommy had never taught them to hate daddy. It was just a mistake. Their mommy had forgiven Daddy.
"Your daddy made your mommy suffer." Fay reminded the two children, knowing they were too young to understand.
"But if it wasn't for that mistake, neither of us would exist."
Mike's words instantly shut Fay up. What did they understand from that 'mistake'?
But still, Fay couldn't argue. These adorable twins would never have been born if not for that accident.
"So, how did your daddy respond?" Fay repeated her question more politely.
Mike shrugged his small shoulders. "Nothing. He's someone who can hide his feelings even when he's very surprised. We gave him time to investigate. When daddy is sure that we are his children, he will pick us up."
Fay chuckled in annoyance at the boy's arrogant tone. "Don't be so sure. You must know about him from the posts on the internet. Who knows, he's not interested in a child. Especially one with twins and troublemakers like you."
"No one has ever refused us. Not even mommy could." Mike smiled mischievously. The boy knew that Fay didn't like them but was forced to bring them with her.
Fay pouted. "That's a different thing. Mr. Goldwin can't just be forced to accept you guys."
"He can't refuse his good luck charm." Mika's eyes flickered playfully.
"He's been lucky since birth. No need for a lucky charm. Besides, I heard that he's now in a relationship with a young lady from the Haines family. I'm not sure any young lady would want to be your stepmother." Fay tried to remember the girl's name, but failed. Cade Goldwin was always making headlines. Even if he spat, the reporters would be happy to make it a headline.
Yaik! Fay was disgusted by the simile. Okay, she was exaggerating. But Cade always made a scene when he changed girlfriends. How many have there been? Ten? Eleven? Fay tapped herself on the head for letting her mind wander. It was none of her business.
The two children across from her furrowed their fine eyebrows. They were not happy to hear the words about stepmother.
"Is daddy getting married soon?" Mike asked cautiously.
"I don't know." Fay shrugged her shoulders. She was glad to see that cute look of annoyance. "But of course one day Mr. Goldwin will marry a spoiled rich young girl who won't like any child but her own."
Then Fay leaned forward, making a mocking face. "At that time, you will be eliminated." Afterward, Fay smiled with satisfaction at the two children's worried looks.
"Will Mommy get rid of us if Mommy has a child of her own?" Mika looked on the verge of tears as she asked.
"That depends on your attitude. If you become obedient children, maybe I'll be kind enough to put you on the family card. If not-"
"We will obey." Mike interrupted quickly.
"That's good. Then let's start from now." Fay was very thirsty and grabbed a water bottle from the bag she had brought to the mall.
"Does that mean you agree to be daddy's wife?"
Fay choked and sprayed the water she was drinking right at the two kids.
***
Cade Goldwin was standing in his spacious office overlooking the view of the city of Axton below. It wasn't the view he had seen every day that made him linger there. An old photograph was in his hand. It was a picture of her sleeping on a hotel bed. Even the date the picture was taken was written on the top corner of the photo. A morning six years ago.
He even forgot the girl's face. All he remembered was that he needed someone as an outlet for the desire rolling around in his body that the drug had brought with it.
Someone had put a stimulant in his drink.
The perpetrator thought that way he could control Cade. Never dreamed. Unfortunately to avoid the trap, a strange girl became a victim. Cade had also lost track of her.
He had been looking for her. And this handwriting told him that she was gone. But she left behind the fruits of that night's love. Two at once!
Cade wondered why she didn't ask him to take responsibility.
There was a knock on the door from outside. Without turning around Cade told the knocker to come in. He knew Langdon was coming. So without turning around he knew who was pushing open the door and stepping into his office.
"What do you think?" Cade asked the assistant.
"The child is indeed your biological son. All the results of the investigation are in this document." Langdon moved to the desk and placed a large envelope on it.
Cade closed his eyes for a moment. He was disappointed by the fact that the girl was gone. But he was quite satisfied with the two children. He had a chance to make amends.
"You can go." He said then.
Langdon excused himself and left the room.
After the assistant left, Cade turned around and went to his desk. He took the envelope Langdon had brought and opened it.
There were pictures of the girl named Audrey. More pictures of her twins. Their children. Copies of birth documents. DNA test results. Several sheets of paperwork with everything about them. Then another photo. Another girl. A girl who was now with Mike and Mika. Fay Willmer.
Cade ignored it. He wasn't interested.
The pair of twins excited him more. He stared at the photo for a long time. He stroked its smooth surface and imagined touching the childrens' skin.
What would his mother say? She would be delighted. She had been pushing for a marriage to the thirty-something Cade just to get some grandchildren. Now Cade didn't have to take the pressure from his mother anymore. Mike and Mika were more than enough to silence Mrs. Goldwin's fussy mouth.
The office door suddenly opened without a knock. A young woman stepped in gracefully.
Cade lifted his face from the surface of the desk. He didn't like the way Pricilla had entered his office. He quietly returned the photos and documents to the envelope and put them in the drawer.
It's not because he's afraid of his secret being discovered. Sooner or later he had to make it public too. No one can refuse their child. Not even Pricilla. It's just that for now he wants to keep it first. Pricilla's mouth could be hotter than chili if her heart wasn't happy.
"Cade, I meant to go to Bella's House to pick up the dress I ordered and passed by your office. I thought it wouldn't hurt to stop by for a while. I also bought lunch for you." Pricilla looked confident as she spoke. She placed a paper bag containing several lunch boxes on the table near the sofa. She glanced at the digital clock on Cade's desk. "Do you want to eat now?"
"I still have work to do. Just leave it there." Cade watched the girl as he linked his arms. He wasn't in the mood to be visited. "You go get the dress. I don't want to be disturbed."
Clear and decisive. Cade didn't like small talk.
Pricilla stopped her movement of arranging the lunchbox. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. As Cade Goldwin's official girlfriend, she was being kicked out of his office.
