Behind Her Mask

It was the 31st of December,2004. There was a very heavy snow storm that day. Kira and Kimberly stayed indoors playing with their nanny while waiting for their parents to come back from the mall.

"Nanny Sarah why are mom and dad not back from the mall yet?", Kimberly asked. "Yes, it's getting really late now and they promised to come back really early",Kira added. "I know,I know, I tried calling them but for some reason I can't seem to get in touch with them",Sarah said.

"Try calling them again", Kimberly said worriedly. "No, don't. Kim you don't know if mom and dad are planning a surprise for us. This is new year's eve, you will end up making us ruin this wonderful surprise",Kira said dumbly.

Just at that moment, Sarah got a call from Mrs Perkins and she immediately answered the call. "Hello ma'am, Kira and Kim are....",Sarah said hastily but got interrupted by an unfamiliar voice. "Please is this the Perkins home line",the lady asked. "Yes,who is this please?", Sarah asked.

"This is nurse Caroline, there was a ghastly car accident at the Sapphire bridge today and unfortunately, Mr and Mrs Perkins were victims to it", Caroline said. "How..how...what condition are they in right now", Sarah asked worriedly."I'm sorry to say this but they couldn't make it, I'm really sorry", Caroline replied sadly.

Minutes later, Sarah and the kids arrived at the hospital. Sarah cried at the sight of seeing Mr and Mrs Perkins lifeless bodies. Kimberly totally lost it and cried her heart out. Kira who was too dumb and clueless to know what had happened just sat there looking at her parents who laid on the hospital bed lifeless.

"Nurse, why are my parents sleeping here, we have really nice and comfortable beds at home. Please wake them up, I tried so many times though but they don't want to wake up", Kira complained. "I'm really sorry little kid but I can't wake them up ",the nurse said sadly.

"Why's that!! It's few minutes to new year and we are all supposed to be lighting our fire crackers together. Pretty please beautiful nurse, please wake them up", Kira pleaded. "Kiddo, your parents are no more,they will never be able to wake up again..they are dead",the nurse said. "Nooo!!", Kira shouted and then passed out.

Days after Mr and Mrs Perkins were buried, child welfare had decided to drop them at an orphanage home. Sarah had offered to take care of the twins but the court had refused, saying that she wasn't financially stable to take care of them.

Eventually, she had to part ways with the kids and move on with her life.Life at the orphanage home was a little bit hard for Kira and Kimberly but they had to endure it anyway.

Three months later, the Hilton's, a very wealthy and famous couple came to the orphanage home to adopt a child. They were looking for a female child around the age of 4 and 5.

Soon enough, they saw Kira and Kimberly playing together. "Oh my gosh, she is so adorable",Mrs Hilton said as she saw Kira playing with her dolls. "Do you like her honey?", Mr Hilton asked.

"Yes, I do. She is the one, I trust my guts"smiles" how old is she?",Mrs Hilton asked. "She is four years old", Miss Sinclair (the head warden) replied.

"Honey, let's adopt her, she is perfect",Mrs Hilton said happily. "Okay sweetie, we just have to sort out the formalities and she will be ours",Mr Hilton said.

"Sorry to interrupt but her name is Kira, and this is her younger twin sister"points at Kimberly "Kimberly. They have been pretty much inseparable since the day they got here. I was just wondering if you guys could please adopt them both",miss Sinclair suggested.

"Sorry ma'am but for some reason,do I look like who is looking to adopt two kids. I just need one." eyes Kimberly from head to toe " I could have considered adopting her but just look at the state she is in,yuck",Mrs Hilton said.

"Get the documents ready. We will come back tomorrow for just Kira, is that understood",Mr Hilton said. "Yes sir", miss Sinclair replied.

Kimberly and Kira spent the entire night together. Kira had no clue whatsoever about what was going to happen. Kimberly on the other hand felt really sad about it and found it hard to sleep that night.

As expected, the next day, the Hilton's came to the orphanage home. After all the documents were sorted out, they didn't waste anymore time and tool Kira with them.

Miss Sinclair felt really sad for Kimberly. "Are you okay Kim?", she asked. "No, I'm not! Those mean people took my twin sister from me.", Kimberly said while crying and then ran away.

Kimberly found it hard living without Kira but with the help of miss Sinclair, she was able to move on just fine.

Eight years later at the orphanage home. "Look miss Sinclair, I saved this spider from grumpy old Mrs Harris. She was about to kill it",Kim said. Coughs weakly,"oh Kim, when will you stop being naughty? You keep on getting on Mrs Harris bad side every single time",miss Sinclair said weakly.

"That is because she is always so rude and mean. I don't like her at all",Kim said stubbornly. "You will have to learn how to get used to her, because when I am gone,she will be in charge. You don't want her to treat you badly, do you?",miss Sinclair advised her.

"Not really. What do you mean by when you are gone...you are not planning to die,are you?!! You promised me that you will get healthy, you promised",Kim said franticaIlly. "Relax Kim, I am neither going to die now nor am I planning on it",she assured her.

"Then what do you mean?",Kim asked confused. "You know how bad my health state is at the moment",Kim nods her head affirmatively,"well in a week time, I will be traveling to India to continue my treatment there. It will be much better for me there, I can guarantee that I will recover much faster when I am there", miss Sinclair said.

"What!! No,no, no...why can't you just stay here and continue with your present treatment. You will get better here, you don't need to go to the other side of the world just to get better",Kim hurriedly said.

"That is what the agency wants, they paid for all this. And to be completely honest, I am really okay with it. If I stay here any further with the condition I am in currently, then I may end up dying",she stated. "This is just so unfair",Kim said and ran out of the room.

"Why can't she just stay".."no Kim, don't be selfish,miss Sinclair really needs this. You love her don't you?".."yes I do, that is why I do not want her to leave me. She is all I've got".."then what if she stays and her condition ends up getting worse, and she dies. What are you doing to do,huh?".."no,no,no!!!", Kim shouted out loud and started slapping her cheeks, to enable her snap out of the conversation she was having with her conscience.

"Are you all right, you seemed to have lost it?",a boy who had been watching her act insanely since asked. "Why do you care!" looks at him carefully," and who are you? I have never seen your face around here before", she asked.

"My name is Drew Miller, miss Sinclair's nephew",he replied. "Nephew???",she muttered. "Um,yeah, you don't know what a nephew means? Well,it simply means....",he said mockingly.

Quickly interrupts him, "shut up! I know what a nephew means dum dum. I was just surprised that is all". "Why are you surprised",he asked.

"Well because I've known miss for a long time now, and she has never mentioned having any nephew at all",she replied.

"Well, you don't need to know everything about her,do you? You are not related to her in any way",he said and walked away. "How rude. He better hopes he doesn't run into me again or he will regret it",grits.

A week later, miss Sinclair was finally set to leave for India. Everyone at the orphanage home gathered to bid her farewell.

"I am sorry Kim, I really am ",miss Sinclair apologized to Kimberly. "Why? You should not be, I admit that it will be hard for me to cope without you here. But I'll strive through because that's what you taught me, to be strong and brave",Kim said firmly.

"I will definitely miss you my little one", miss Sinclair said and gave a faint smile. "I will await the day that we both would meet again",Kim said and they both hugged each other. "Time to go sis, you don't want to miss your flight, right?"?",Mrs Miller said. "Goodbye Kim ",miss Sinclair said has she left.

After miss Sinclair left, life in the orphanage home became torture for Kimberly. She got bullied by the younger kids there. They made fun of her, saying things like,"she was too old for the orphanage home ","no one was ever going to adopt her","she was going to end up marrying the orphanage home " and other hurtful words.

Mrs Harris was no exception, she made life very hard for Kimberly. She gave her punishment a lot, for no better reason, sometimes she didn't give her any food.

"I can't keep living my life like this anymore. I have been stuck in this dump for too long now", looks around the compound,"I have no clue whatsoever how the outside world is. If no one is going to adopt me, I may as well just run away but I have to think of way too not get caught".

Just then, she noticed a car drive into the compound. Inside the car was Mrs Miller and Drew. Suddenly a plan popped into her head.

"Good day Mrs Miller, how is miss Sinclair doing?", Mrs Harris asked. " The doctors said her condition is improving ",Mrs Miller replied. "That is really nice to hear. So what brings you here today?", Mrs Harris asked again.

" I just came by to get my sister's remaining stuffs. If you don't mind, I will be going to her room now", Mrs Miller replied and walked away with Drew. "Just because you are young and rich doesn't mean you will talk to me in that manner ",Mrs Harris said in a low tone. Kimberly who had been eavesdropping for a while now laughed.

Drew decided to take a stroll around the building while his mom gathered all if miss Sinclair's stuffs. On his stroll around the building, he spotted a girl with a big bag, trying to open his mom's car boot with a pin.

"Hey! Stop that you thief. I will report you to the head warden and you will be in big trouble",he said. "Oh no, please don't",the girl said.

Shocked,"you!! The crazy girl from last time",he said. Rolls her eyes,"I have a name you know. Kim_ber_ly... just three syllables. So it's going to be easy for you to pronounce, right?",she said mockingly.

"Hahaha, how funny. What the hell are you trying to do to my mom's car? Do you steal when you get bored?, he asked. "Any idiot would be able to tell from my big bag and me trying to jiggle the lock of this boot open, that I am obviously trying to run away", she said and hissed.

"The fact that you indirectly insulted me just makes me want to march right over to Mrs Harris office and expose you ",he jokingly said. "I am sorry, please don't. She will probably give me nothing to eat for three days and make me do majority of the hard chores. Please don't ",she pleaded.

"Woah, chill I was only joking",sighs and looks up"so she is that cruel to everyone,huh?",he asked. "Nahh, only to me tho. Although she does not treat some of the kids that way, she just has a thing with enjoying torturing me",she said.

"And why is that? You stole her savings? You tried to poison her? You killed her pet?, he asked. "Um,yeah. I actually killed her pet but to be honest,it was just a mistake. Two years ago,she brought this really cute black cat here. I was very fond of it but I hated the fact that it's fur was just too black. So one day, I sneaked her cat away and tried to dye it's fur in a big tub of water, filled with purple dye. Long story short, the cat ended up drowning. I guess that cat just couldn't swim",she said and sighed.

"You are a really sick person. Cats can't swim, they hate water. Then who the hell dyes a cat's fur and purple for that matter. Have you ever seen a purple cat?",he asked.

"Not really but I would love to see one, someday ", Kim replied. "So why are you trying to runaway?",he asked. "If I stay here any further, I may end up killing myself or someone ",she replied.

"Oh!",he muttered surprised. "So please help me. Open your mom's car boot please,I promise I will get off as soon as possible ",she begged him. "Are you sure you will be able to survive in the outside world on your own?",he asked.

"Yes. I am a tough girl, do not underestimate me just because I am short and small. You got that?",she said in a bossy manner.

"Drew,where are you?!", Mrs Miller called from inside the building. "Quick, get in. I'll make sure to leave it open okay",he hurriedly said. "Thanks, thanks a lot",she thanked him and then got into the boot.

After about an hour drive from the orphanage home, Mrs Miller got pulled over by a cop. "Good day officer, how may I help you?",she asked politely. "Nothing much really, I just find it quite suspicious that your boot is slightly open. Is there a dead body in there or did you kidnap someone?", the cop asked.

"No, I didn't do any of such thing ",she replied. "Then if you don't mind, I would like to search it", the cop said. "Go ahead",she approved and got down from her car.

"Oh no, she is definitely going to get caught for sure. What should I do",Drew said aside to himself. "See, there is nothing in here. I guess my son over there hadn't closed it well. So can we go now please?",she asked. "Yes. Sorry for the trouble ",the cop apologized.

"She is gone? She did say she was going to get off quick though. I hope she is somewhere safe, if only she had waited longer, she would have been able to get off in the city ",Drew thought to himself.

"Hey kiddo, what are you doing wandering in the streets all alone? Where are your parents?",a big able bodied woman asked Kimberly. "Lana,why don't we just take her and then charge her parents if they want her back ",the woman on the left side suggested.

"You could have just easily said, we kidnap her and then demand ransom from her parents. Simple and short",the woman on the right side mockingly said.

"Hey, I am no little child okay. I understand very clearly what you all just said right now. And sorry to spoil your business but this kiddo is an orphan ", Kim said not bothered.

"If you are an orphan then aren't you supposed to be in an orphanage home? There is one not that far from here", Lana stated. "I am..but I escaped"gives a sly smile,"and before you ask me why. Just know that I was totally mistreated, tortured and disregarded there. If I wanted to remain sane, I had to leave there at once",she explained.

"Wow, you've got guts kiddo, I think I like you",Lana said impressed. "So what is your name?",the woman at the right side asked.

"My name is Kimberly, Kimberly Perkins ",she replied. "Kimberly, I'm Lana"points to the woman on the left side,"she is Sam and the other is Jane. So where are you heading to, now that you have escaped, Lana asked.

"I don't really know but I will figure something out",she replied. "Look, we are boxers, we were only joking about the kidnapping stuff. Why don't you come with us, what do you say?", Lana said.

"Going with you guys?",Kim said with a questioning look on her face. "I will put it straight to you kiddo. I love your bold attitude, literally everything about you at the moment.We are willing to take you in. You have nowhere to go,so what do you say,huh? ", Lana said.

"Are you in or not?",Jane added. "I'm in. I mean what have I seriously got to lose. Also, I'm in this more for the boxing part. You guys are gonna teach me, right?",she inquired. "Sure thing kiddo. Sure thing ",Lana replied and smiled.

6 years later

*At The Hilton's Mansion*

"Maria, this is all your fault ", Clifford Hilton angrily said. "How is our daughter being a drug addict my fault",Maria Hilton asked in a pissed off tone. "If you did not spoil her this much, if you had paid much attention to her, then all this wouldn't have happened ", Clifford ranted.

"Look, unlike you, I've always been here for our daughter. I may be busy sometimes but at least I always make time to spend with her. You on the other hand don't even get to stay at home for more than two weeks. She only get involved because she is bringing more fame and money to this family ", Maria stated.

Just then, an aggressively intoxicated Lilimar barged into their room. "Mom! Dad! Which one of you took the drugs in my drawer. I asked the maids and they said one of you took it", Lilimar aggressively asked.

"I took it young lady and you are never getting it back. So just leave this room right now ",Maria scolded her. "Would you please just shut up and give my drugs back to me. I really need them right now, so just give em back to me",she said while shaking Maria aggressively.

"Lilimar,let go of your mother right this instant.", Clifford warned her. "No, I won't. She has to give me back my drugs or else she will hate what I would do to her",she threatened. At that moment, two of the family's bodyguards entered the room and carried her out.

"Oh my goodness. What was she seriously going to do to me",Maria said in a terrified tone with a hand placed on her chest. "With the way she is behaving, if the media gets a hold of this news. Then we are totally done for ", Clifford said seriously.

"We can't let this news get out. Lilimar clearly needs to be sent to a rehab for a proper treatment.", Maria said. "I know but what would people say when our daughter suddenly goes missing for some months. You know she has her modelling and acting careers at the corner. Different rumors are definitely going to circulate through the media ",he stated.

"So you want us to just let her roam free in this condition. What if she suddenly goes crazy like this again in public. What are you going to do then huh? We have to think of a solution fast", she said.

"If only we could find someone who looks exactly like her, to replace her why she's being rehabilitated" pauses for a while,"I have got it. Why don't we go back to the orphanage home and get her twin sister ",he said.

"Yes, that will definitely work. But what if someone had already adopted her by now. I mean it's been 14 years already",she said worriedly. "We are the Hilton's. We will and always get what we want ", he said firmly and smiled.

' Blossom Hill Orphanage Home'

"What do you mean by she wasn't adopted but isn't here as well?", Maria asked. "That girl was a very big nuisance here. A couple of years back, she somehow managed to run away from here", Mrs Harris replied.

"So what you are trying to say is that, you people do not have a clue whatsoever about the whereabout of that kid?", Clifford asked. "Not really though. A worker said he once saw her in a small town next to ours a few months ago", Mrs Harris replied.

"How much would it take for you to give us the full details?", Maria demanded. "A thousand dollars ", Mrs Harris replied smiling.

"Jake, give her triple the amount she asked for", Maria ordered. "Yes ma'am", Jake replied and then gave Mrs Harris the money in cash.

'Outside Meekville's Boxing Arena '

"Are you sure this is the place?", Maria asked and looked at the place through the car window. "From the description she gave us, this is surely the place ", Jake replied.

"It's way too local and filthy. Jake go inside and find her, we will be here waiting for her", she said. "Okay ma'am ", Jake replied and went into the building.

"Please, I am looking for Kimberly Perkins. I heard she is a boxer here ", Jake asked a lady inside the building. "Wait here, I will bring her over", the lady replied.

Soon, Kimberly came and met up with him. "Who are you and what do you need me for?", Kim asked firmly. "My name is Jake, the Hilton's personal driver",Jake replied.

"And who in the hell are the Hilton's?",she asked with one eyebrow raised up. Jake had a really surprised look on his face,"you don't know the famous and wealthy Hilton family?".

"Um,no" pauses and thinks for a moment,"oh yeah. I only know of one though. They adopted my sister years back, haven't really heard from them again since then. It did seem like they were rich back then though",she said.

"Yes, they are the Hilton's. They are outside the building at the moment and would like to have a word with you ",he said. "Oh cool. You can tell them to come inside then", she said and started practicing by punching the air.

"Um, I guess you did not quite get me well. They want you to come outside ",he said frustratedly. "But yet still,they came looking for me. So it really would make more sense that they came in instead", she said not bothered.

"Miss Kimberly, it is an urgent matter and it is about your sister ",he said in an attempt to get her attention. She suddenly stopped and said,"tell them I will be there soon. I have a match right now, I'll meet them as soon as my match ends". "Okay",he said and then left the building.

'At A Fast Food Joint Close To The Boxing Arena '

"So how is my sister doing. You guys separated us years back. So why contact me now all of a sudden. Is it because something bad has happened to her?", Kim asked in an inquisitive tone.

"You seem to have a very strong tongue, don't you?", Maria said. "Would you guys just fucking cut to the chase already",Kim said in an uninterested manner. "Your sister,being under bad influences has become seriously addicted to hard drugs. The effects of it are now physically visible in her actions ", Clifford explained.

"You mean she has gone psycho, right?",Kim said. "Yes", Clifford replied pissed off. "Damn, you should have just said it like that" sighs,"so she is in rehab now, right?", Kim asked.

"We are planning to put her soon", Maria replied. Kimberly scoffs and looks at them in disbelief,"you are planning to? That sounds really lame and shitty. She needs to be put in rehab now before it gets really worse."

"We have arranged for that but without your help, I am afraid she wouldn't be able to get the treatment she needs", Maria slyly said. "What do you mean?",Kim asked confused.

"Your sister is one of the most famous teen celebrity in the country right now. If she disappears now for months from the limelight, it would stir up all sorts of rumors in the press. And it is going to end up tarnishing her reputation,our reputation.",Maria replied.

"Then just tell the press that she got addicted to drugs and she is being rehabilitated for the time being. Simple and short",Kim said. "Really" laughs,"it is not has easy as you put it Kimberly. Once your sister gets done with rehab and returns, with such tainting news about her...her career is good as done. It's goodbye to her dreams. This isn't your normal boor life, this is Hollywood we are talking about. If that happens, judging by how sensitive she can be, she could prolly fall into depression ", Clifford stated.

Okay, okay, okay " looks at them suspiciously,"what then do you want me to do before you will let Kira get treatment?", Kim asked. "We want you to replace her till she gets better ", Maria replied.

Laughs really hard,"are you guys for real?", notices the expression on their faces,"oh! You guys are really being serious right now?",she said.

"Yes. And would you please stop taking everything we say to you as a joke. This is a very serious matter that needs to be resolved ", Clifford said. Smiles and then fake cough,"but how can you guys possibly expect me to leave my own life and then live my sister's own instead. That just doesn't make any sense ",she said.

Sighs,"look Kim" puts both her of hands together," it is only going to be for some months. After that, you can get back to living your own life. Do this for your sister please. She really needs this, we promise to reward you handsomely ", Maria said in a convincing manner.

"And if I say I don't want to do it" smirks,"what are you guys going to do?", she asked. "We are going to make living really hard for you. Till you finally agree", Clifford replied and smiled.

Stands up,"thanks for this wonderful meal and everything but I refuse this offer" turns to leave but then stops," one more thing. If my sister doesn't get into rehab in the next three days. Then I will report this matter to the police",Kim threatened and then left.

"How dare she refuse our offer and then threaten us", Clifford furiously said. "Relax honey" smiles cunningly,"she does not know who she is dealing with. We are going to beat her to her own game. Before the next three days runs out, she will definitely be back to beg us for the offer", Maria said and gave out a weird laugh.

Two Days Later

'The Boxing Arena '

"What do you mean this building is to be demolished?", Lana asked the man who seemed to be a building contractor. "The Hilton's bought this building and ordered for it to be demolished at once", the man replied.

At that moment, Kimberly arrived," what do you mean by the Hilton's bought this building?" to Lana,"this isn't a public building and we definitely didn't put it up for sale, right?".

"Yes, we didn't ",Lana replied. "But this land is governments property and the Hilton's bought the land. That makes this building on it suit to be demolished " shows them a document," this right here states that we have full approval from the government to demolish this building. And if anyone of you gets in our way, it will be at his or her owns risk. So you all are to evacuate this building in the next 8 hours ", the man rudely said.

"Damn this, what are we going to do now. This has never happened before ", Lana said in a stressed tone. "Is this really all you guys can do,Mr and Mrs Hilton ", Kim said aside to herself.

"Excuse me,who is Lana Ventura", a female inspector who had just arrived at the scene asked. "I am Lana Ventura,how may I help you ma'am?", she asked.

"Good day miss Ventura " eyes her from head to toe," I am inspector Belair and I have a warrant here to arrest you for running this boxing arena unlicensed ", inspector Belair said.

"Fuck this", Lana muttered. "Cops, cuff her up", inspector Belair instructed. "Wait. Can I have a word with " points at Kimberly,"her first. Please,I will be quick ", Lana pleaded. "Go ahead and don't even think of escaping ", Belair warned. Then Lana dragged Kim into the building to talk.

"Kim, what is going on?", Lana asked. "What do you mean?", Kim asked acting clueless. "Just two days ago, the Hilton's came looking for you. Now all of a sudden,they bought this land and want to demolish our building. And I'm also being arrested just because I ran this place unlicensed, and it has never happened before" inhales and exhales deeply,"would you seriously tell me what is going on!!!",Lana said.

"Okay,chill , just relax " sighs,"you remember I told you I had a twin sister,who I got separated from back at the orphanage home ",Kim said.

"Yeah,so?", Lana said. "Well the family that adopted her are the Hilton's ", Kim shortly said and got interrupted by Lana. "Means Lilimar Hilton is your sister then?", Lana asked.

"Lilimar who?", Kim said with a confused look on her face. "Lilimar Hilton, number six on the top ten list of successful teen celebrities in the country " slaps her hand slightly on her face," you really have to get to know more about the outside life", Lana said.

"By outside life, you mean social media,right?" Lana nods affirmatively,"so I'm guessing they changed her name to Lilimar ", Kim said. "So go on, what happened ",Lana reminded her about the explanation.

"Apparently, my sister got addicted to hard drugs and she needs to be taken to rehab immediately. But they won't send her until I agree to replace her for the time being. I rejected their deal, and threatened them..so this is their way of trying to make me break" holds both of Lana's hands together," but I promise you Lana,I will find a way to get us out of this. I just need time ", Kim said.

Flings her hands out of Kim's hands,"you are being selfish right now Kim. You are letting your sister, me and the members of this boxing arena suffer, all just for a mere thing", Lana said.

"A mere thing?" looks at her disappointedly," you are calling having to leave my own life and live the life of my sister just a mere thing?", Kim asked disappointedly.

"Look Kim, just reason this thing properly. You will only be replacing her for some months and that is it. Just do this and help your sister, help me, help the boxing arena members and most importantly, help yourself. Doing this will really help you a lot. You are going to really benefit from this a lot. And when your sister gets better, you can go ahead and catch up like old times ",Lana advised her.

Kim stood there silently for a while, pondering on everything Lana had just said. "Fine, I will do it. I am not doing this just because I will benefit from it. I am doing this for my sister's sake and for the boxing arena. Also because I respect you,so I will heed to your advice." "I am really glad that you made the right decision", Lana said and smiled.

The next day, Kim took a train to LA to meet up with the Hilton's. After arriving in LA, she headed straight for the Hilton's Mansion.

'Outside The Gates Of The Hilton's Mansion '

Kim rings the bell at the gate. "State your name and your purpose for coming here please ", the gateman asked through the speaker.

"My name is Kimberly Perkins and I am here to see Mr and Mrs Hilton", she said. "Do you have an appointment with them",he rudely asked.
