Bearing A Baby For the Billionaire

Genre: Romance
He laughs disdainfully, "Taylor, remember that you forced me into this marriage two years ago and coerced me to leave my home. I'll never let you have peace in your life. Your child means nothing to me! If I didn't need this child, I wouldn't touch you for the rest of my life. Allowing this child to be born is the most I can tolerate!" Alexander Grant strongly dislikes Taylor Parker and sees her mainly as a means to have a child. But what's the cause of this intense aversion? Could it be due to her pressuring him into marriage, or are there deeper reasons at play? Moreover, what's the underlying motive behind his insistence on her having a child?

Chapter 1 1

In a dimly lit room at night, there were sounds of heavy breathing that caused embarrassment and a racing heart. Taylor Parker lay on the bed, biting her lips as her sobs grew louder, eventually turning into tears.

Alexander Grant wiped her tears away and said mockingly, "Why do you act so aggrieved?"

She remained silent, shutting her eyes and letting her tears soak the sheets.

"Listen carefully," he turned her to face him, saying, "Despite feeling wronged, you're still my lawful wife. These are your responsibilities."

"But as you've said, I'm not worthy of bearing your children! What are you doing now?"

He exerted force, making it hard for her to breathe. She endured for a while, her trembling body collapsing against him, feeling pain and discomfort.

Ignoring her pleas, he continued, pinning her down. He spoke more forcefully, "Of course, you don't deserve to have my child. Your impure body disgusts me. It was true before, and it remains so. But now, I need this child, and you must give it to me..."

"Why?! Why? Why..." She kicked at the sheets in despair, struggling beneath him, crying, but her efforts were in vain.

He paid no heed to her resistance and kept going until he was exhausted.

...

Taylor lay on the bed, gazing at the ceiling, reflecting on the past months as tears flowed uncontrollably.

For a long time after her marriage to Alexander Grant, he avoided her touch and seemed to despise her. She believed they were destined to be in name only.

Suddenly, one day, he began demanding her relentlessly, day and night, regardless of her feelings.

More than once, she woke up feeling empty and shattered.

Only when she became pregnant with his child did he cease tormenting her physically, resorting to verbal cruelty instead.

"Taylor, isn't that why you crept into my bed? How did you go from being cheap to demanding respect?"

"Taylor, take care of your baby. If anything happens to him, you'll regret it!"

"Taylor, let me warn you. Don't think that having my child means you'll gain something from me. This child, like you, won't receive my love. Do you expect the mother to manipulate her son? Don't even dream about it."

...

As time passed, Taylor felt as if it crawled by, yet three months had already gone by.

Early one morning, she sat on a sofa near the window, thinking about the two years since marrying Alexander Grant.

His words and actions felt like descending into a cold abyss, even her once-beloved sunlight now felt icy.

Her youth had been dominated by Alexander Grant. Despite her years of affection, he viewed her as "repugnant," "unclean," "worthless," and "shameless."

So why did he insist on having a child with her?

Taylor's hand rested on her flat stomach, where her and Alexander's child was growing.

Though not yet fully formed, she could almost envision the child's appearance-innocent, adorable, with bright eyes, a fondness for laughter, and a love for sweets. Thinking of this brought a gentle smile to her face.

Alexander entered the room and saw Taylor's maternal smile. He despised her, so her smile seemed out of place.

He stood by the window, observing her, and asked impatiently, "What do you want now?"

Without looking up, Taylor anticipated his expression. Her gaze drifted to a leaf outside the window, and she replied softly:

"Could we spend time together, just for once?"

She hoped for a positive response. After all, he was the father of their child, and her request didn't seem excessive.

But Alexander's reply dripped with sarcasm: "One, no time. Two..."

He leaned close, his voice sneering, "Two... You're not deserving."

Taylor had heard countless hurtful words from Alexander, so this no longer affected her as much. Still, she felt a pang for her baby and offered a weak smile:

"Yes, how could I forget that only Raven Blackwood is worthy of your attention!"

"Shut up, Taylor! Consider the harm you've caused Raven. Do you have the nerve to bring up her name? Aren't you ashamed?" Alexander angrily interrupts her.

Taylor looks up at the unfeeling man. "It's not me who should feel ashamed, but your precious Raven. Who's the one who's done awful things? She knows deep down."

Her lack of remorse surprises her. She's never been one to shy away from standing up to Alexander's mistreatment.

Alexander's anger intensifies. He pinches Taylor's chin, gripping so hard it feels like he's crushing her bones.

"Taylor, you're just a tool for giving birth. Don't try to smear Raven's name, and don't even think about things you shouldn't. Otherwise, I'll wipe out your entire Parker family overnight!"

Taylor thinks, I'm more than a mere tool for giving birth. I'm a pawn you're manipulating to control the Parker family.

She retorts with a smile, "Fine, let's get divorced after the child is born. You and Raven can be together then."

Without waiting for his response, she heads to the closet to find her clothes. Seeing him still standing there, she pauses, turns to face him, and speaks calmly:

"Alexander, let me give you some advice as a husband and wife. Reality might not always be what it seems." With that, she heads into the dressing room to change.

When she reappears, the nanny notices her distressed look and approaches. "Madam, do you want me to come with you to the hospital?"

"No, I'm going for a prenatal checkup. Just come along and let Alexander know."

It's meant as a joke, but the nanny takes it seriously. She works hard to support her family and can't afford to lose her job.

Seeing the nanny's alarmed expression, Taylor chuckles. "I was joking, don't worry. I don't need your company anyway. I can manage on my own."

With that, she leaves the house.

On the second-floor balcony, Alexander watches Taylor leave while smoking. He's annoyed. He clearly despises her, yet hearing the word "divorce" from her hits him unexpectedly.

The nanny, concerned, rushes to inform him about Taylor mentioning the child.

Enraged, Alexander stubs out his cigarette and rushes out. He grabs Taylor's arm and pulls her into the car.

"What's going on?"

Taylor can't break free, so she lets Alexander push her into the car.

"Going for the prenatal checkup. Don't want my child to be killed by its cruel mother!"

"Well, isn't that a surprise! I should be thanking you for the baby then!"

Silence fills the ride.

At the hospital, the prenatal checkup goes smoothly. Taylor listens to the doctor's advice alone.

Alexander steps out to take a phone call. When he returns, his expression is dark. He asks the attending doctor, "When's the earliest possible time for the baby to be born?"

The doctor assumes Alexander is eager to meet his child and replies with a smile, "I understand your excitement, Mr. Grant. It's best for the baby's health to be born at full term."

"But if a cesarean section is necessary before full term, the earliest is usually around 36 weeks. This increases the chances of the baby's survival."

Alexander's patience wears thin. "I can't wait that long. Can you give me the earliest option?"

The doctor hesitates, glancing at Taylor with concern.

Taylor's heart feels like it's been stabbed as she hears Alexander's question. Her chest grows heavy, making it difficult to breathe. She forces a smile:

"Doctor, please tell him."

The doctor sighs and replies, "The earliest would be around seven months. The survival rate depends on the circumstances. But Mr. Grant, remember, you're not the only one involved. You should also consider your wife's wishes."

Alexander looks at Taylor, who hasn't said a word, and forcefully takes her out of the office.

In the car, tension fills the air.

Alexander gazes at Taylor and declares, "We'll have a cesarean section four months from now."

Taylor's face goes pale as she glares at him. "I won't agree!"

He sneers, "That's not up to you!"

Taylor retorts, "Alexander, this child is mine too. You told me to take care of the baby."

"I won't go back on my word. You heard the doctor. Seven months is acceptable..."

"Alexander, you heartless jerk!" Taylor's anger boils over, and she hits him.

Alexander grabs her hand, waiting for her to vent her frustration. Seeing tears on her face, he shows his disgust, "Had enough? Once you're done, go home."

"Alexander, I won't let you manipulate this situation."

He laughs disdainfully, "Taylor, remember that you forced me into this marriage two years ago and coerced me to leave my home. I'll never let you have peace in your life. Your child means nothing to me! If I didn't need this child, I wouldn't touch you for the rest of my life. Allowing this child to be born is the most I can tolerate!"

Chapter 2 2

Alexander's face was fierce, and his tone turned cold.

Taylor found his behavior confusing. Her face turned pale, and her lips quivered with anger. She replied, "Unless I'm dead, or you suddenly don't want to harm my child."

Alexander paid no attention to her words. He opened the car door and signaled for Taylor to get out. "Since the prenatal checkup is done, you can go back on your own."

Taylor wanted to distance herself from him as quickly as possible. As she stood up, a sharp pain shot through her abdomen. She held onto the car door for support and asked, "Can you accompany me to the hospital again?"

Alexander glanced at her, noticing the sweat on her forehead. Just as he was about to step out, his phone rang.

"Alexander, have you arrived?" The delicate voice of Raven came from the other end of the line, tinged with worry.

Alexander looked from the pale Taylor to his phone and replied gently, "Raven, sorry, I'm on my way."

Raven Blackwood? Taylor remembered that Raven, who had disappeared two years ago, had returned four months ago.

She gazed bitterly at Alexander's gentle profile, then turned away with a sad smile.

Alexander ended the call and saw Taylor still standing outside the car window. After a moment's hesitation, he spoke softly, "I have something to take care of. Go see the doctor by yourself."

With that, he drove away.

Taylor watched his car disappear in the distance, tears welling up uncontrollably. There was no love left for her in his heart.

What was the physical pain compared to the torment of a wounded heart? Her vision blurred, and dizziness overcame her. The world spun around her, and she eventually lost consciousness.

When she woke up, the scent of disinfectant greeted her nose.

"Are you awake?"

Taylor saw the man in front of her was Benjamin Grant, Alexander's brother. She mustered a polite smile and said, "Benjamin, what brought you here?"

"I was just discharged from the hospital and saw you faint on my way back..."

Upon hearing this, Taylor placed her hand on her stomach and let out a sigh of relief. Fortunately, the baby was okay!

"Thank you."

Benjamin noticed her gesture and nodded. "You're welcome. If you hadn't fainted near the hospital, the situation could have been worse. Try not to be alone outside from now on."

She had never intended to be alone.

As Taylor thought about Alexander's indifferent gaze when he left, a cold feeling settled in her heart.

"Did Alexander know that I was at the hospital?"

Benjamin saw the hope in Taylor's eyes and smiled faintly. His gaze shifted to the door before returning to her:

"I have a surgery to attend to. I can't stay here with you. Your condition isn't stable right now. Rest well, and I'll visit you later."

After Benjamin left, the room felt emptier. Taylor's loneliness deepened. She wasn't one to fake her emotions, but under these circumstances, she felt the sadness of knowing her husband and the father of her child was with another woman.

After all, he showed no concern for her or her child. What had she expected?

Until she was discharged, Alexander didn't appear, and only the nanny came once a day to provide her with fresh clothes.

On the day Taylor left the hospital, she wandered aimlessly without informing anyone. Passing by a shopping mall, she noticed the display of baby products. A pang of emotion surged within her, prompting her to step inside.

Inside, a wide range of baby items awaited her: baby bottles, toys, tiny clothes, and more. The colors were soft and soothing, mostly pastels that eased her eyes.

As she looked at the delicate garments, Taylor pondered whether her unborn baby would be a boy or a girl.

A couple stood in the baby boy section. The husband tenderly assisted his pregnant wife, his touch drawing a happy smile on her face.

Taylor's lips felt numb, her gaze fixed on the wife. She couldn't look away for a long while.

Her eyes began to reflect a mixture of loss and sorrow. Witnessing such a loving scene of anticipation for a new life, she feared she wouldn't be able to leave a legacy for her own child.

"Can I help you, ma'am?"

The sales assistant, sensing her despondency, approached with enthusiasm.

Taylor snapped back to reality and managed a polite smile. "Thank you. I'll let you know if I need assistance."

"Of course."

Just as the assistant stepped away, a delicate voice sounded behind her.

"Alex, this one is adorable!" It was Raven's voice.

Taylor's posture stiffened.

Would he bring another woman along to shop for their baby? Unbelievable!

For a moment, Taylor's emotions churned. She moved further inside, hiding from view behind the counter.

Raven led Alexander into the store, heading straight for the children's section for ages 1 to 3. She picked up a denim jacket, her gaze expectant as she asked Alexander, "Do you think our Henry will look handsome in this?"

Alexander looked down at her tenderly. "I trust your judgment."

Concealed behind the counter, Taylor's face turned ashen.

Henry? They both have a child?

...

TAYLOR'S POV

From the size of the clothes they were looking at, it seemed that "Henry" was over a year old. So, Raven must have become pregnant shortly after I married Alexander?

That realization was a shock to me.

Connecting the dots, I suddenly felt a surge of bitter irony. It was like a sharp knife stabbing through my entire being.

I couldn't stand being in that place any longer. In a state of panic, I rushed towards the exit of the store.

But my hasty exit was blocked by a shop assistant. "Madam, would you like this dress? I can pack it for you if you want."

Looking at the small garment in my hand, I felt an overwhelming sense of distress. "I'm sorry, I don't want it anymore."

However, it was too late. Raven appeared beside me, wearing a puzzled expression. "Taylor? What a coincidence! Actually, I came here hoping to see you."

I stopped in my tracks, biting my lip and mustering a smile. I turned to face Raven and Alexander, saying, "What a coincidence! Unfortunately, I'm not feeling well. I'm heading back to rest. You two carry on."

Alexander frowned slightly upon hearing that. He attempted to hold me back. "Why don't you stay at the hospital and avoid wandering around?"

I wanted to ask him: Do you even remember that I was at the hospital? It's truly an honor to be remembered by you!

Suppressing a bitter snort, I managed to avoid Alexander's touch and offered a weak smile. "I'm sorry, the hospital isn't my home. I can't stay there forever. And I have the freedom to be wherever I want. Plus, my child isn't some fragile creature. If his mother wants to buy something for him, why shouldn't she?"

My words were charged with frustration, and Alexander seemed taken aback by my sudden defiance.

He was caught off guard and struggled to find a response. Eventually, he said casually, "If you're not at the hospital, then go back home and take care of yourself. No one told you not to wander around alone. If something happens and it affects the child's well-being, you know the consequences."

The tension between us was palpable.

Just then, a shop assistant approached from the other side. Unaware of the earlier interaction, he assumed we knew each other and said with a smile, "Mr. and Mrs. Grant, we have some new arrivals in our store today. Would you like to take a look?"

The shop assistant referred to Raven as "Mrs. Grant."

Raven seemed satisfied with being addressed as "Mrs. Grant." She cast a triumphant glance at me and said with a smile, "Actually, she's Mrs. Grant, not me."

The shop assistant appeared flustered, gave an embarrassed smile, and quickly retreated.

Mrs. Grant?

The title made me chuckle to myself. Observing Raven's smug expression, I suddenly felt a strange satisfaction.

In a way, I was the legitimate Mrs. Grant. Raven was just a newcomer, after all.

A desire to assert myself against Raven surged within me. Even though it might ultimately be in vain: "Raven, as long as I'm here, you'll remain in the shadows. You won't see the light!"

Raven's expression soured. She turned to Alexander and called out, "Alex..."

"Taylor, you should know well the manipulative tactics you used in the past. Once the child is born, whatever you have will be meaningless. Raven belongs to me." Alexander gently patted Raven's hand.

Witnessing their closeness, I felt a sharp pain in my heart. I refrained from explaining further, "Alexander, all the misunderstandings you have about me were deliberately orchestrated by Raven. How many times do I have to tell you? Why can't you believe me?"

"Don't I know who you are? Don't my eyes see what they see?" Alexander retorted coldly.

Feeling wronged, I wanted to explain, but Raven interjected, taking Alexander's hand. "Alex, let's go back. I'm feeling a bit tired."

"Alright!" Alexander gazed tenderly at Raven, his voice gentle. Then he turned his cold eyes to me. "Taylor, let me make it clear. Don't do anything reckless. Go back and focus on raising the child. Otherwise, you'll face the consequences!"

With that, Alexander put his hand on Raven's shoulder and walked away, a smile on his face.

Left behind, I stood in silence, tears flowing uncontrollably.

"Alexander, are you really that clueless? Can't you see the truth? Are you truly that naive? Haven't you considered it for even a moment? You're letting yourself be manipulated like a pawn! How blind can you be?"

Deep in thought, I returned to the villa. From that day on, I rarely ventured outside. I confined myself there, moving around very little, quietly nurturing my baby.

My actions weren't driven by fear of Alexander. After all, I was my child's biological mother. How could I bring harm to my own child?

The doctor had heard about my close call with losing the baby, so he was genuinely concerned. However, Alexander seldom returned to the villa. Most of his time was spent with Raven. Even when he did come home, he would soon be summoned away by Raven's calls.

According to him, Raven's older child had been unwell recently.

I paid little attention to him. Seeing how he would come and go so quickly, I didn't know what to say to him.

One day, I asked a seemingly casual question.

"Did you want me to have a child just because Raven had one?"

Chapter 3 3

TAYLOR'S POV

Alexander stayed silent, neither confirming nor denying my suspicions.

"How's Henry?" I asked again.

Alexander suddenly looked anxious, avoiding discussing Henry's condition. It was clear he didn't want to talk about it.

"Take care of yourself. Don't worry about anything else," Alexander replied, sidestepping my question about Henry.

Days passed quietly until an unexpected visitor disrupted the peaceful routine, injecting a sense of panic back into my life.

That day, I sat upstairs as usual, lost in thought or perhaps in a state of emptiness:

"Taylor, your best friend Raven is here."

Raven's voice echoed from the staircase, accompanied by a smile on her face, as if we were still in our carefree days.

Before I could respond, anger surged through me. "I don't remember having a friend like you. If you hadn't tricked me with those drugs and lured me into Alexander's room, I wouldn't be in this miserable situation now!"

Unfazed by my cold reception, Raven retorted, "Don't be so angry. I have something rather interesting to tell you. Are you interested?"

She gazed at me with a cunning smile, not bothering to address the issue of the drugs.

Pushing aside that subject, I turned my attention to Raven, waiting to hear what she had to say.

"Do you know why Alexander fell for me first?" Raven whispered in my ear.

Her question piqued my curiosity. It was a puzzle that had long perplexed me.

Alexander knew full well that he would never be attracted to someone like Raven.

"Because I told him I was the one who rescued him from the fire. Haha, didn't see that coming, did you?" Raven giggled mischievously.

She rolled up her sleeve, revealing a disfigured scar left by the fire. "See this? I intentionally burned my skin to make him believe me."

"You..." I was seething with anger.

Taking a deep breath to steady myself, I controlled my emotions and tried to keep my voice steady. "When did you tell Alexander this?"

"After you saved him from the fire, you fainted. I wasn't far away then. I took him to the hospital, took care of him, and stayed by his bedside day and night until he woke up. I wanted him to see me and know that I was the one who saved him."

Raven looked at me with a smug expression, her face turning pale. She continued, "When Alexander found out that I rescued him, you should have seen the look of astonishment on his face. I then told him that I had secretly loved him for years, and he believed me. He accepted my confession."

Raven couldn't help but laugh at her triumph.

"Raven, you're a fraud!" I roared, "You don't actually like Alexander. You're after his wealth and his family background."

Seeing my furious reaction, Raven reveled in my distress. She tilted her head, her lips curling into a teasing smile. "Look at that angry and pitiful face of yours!"

Fighting the urge to explode, I yanked my chin from her grip and snapped, "Raven, the greatest regret of my life is ever knowing you."

"Is it?" Raven lifted her chin defiantly, her eyes gleaming with a victorious gleam. She sneered at me and declared, "Do you think everyone is obligated to adore you just because you're Miss Parker? When we met Alexander, why wouldn't he be allowed to like me?"

I sneered back, "I never imagined you could be so shameless. Alexander will see through your facade eventually. What will he think of you then?"

"Haha, and if he learns the truth? Would he believe you? Your standing in his eyes is only diminishing. I'll make you feel even more hopeless, driving you to give up!"

With that, Raven retreated, inching back toward the solid wood railing behind her.

Bang!

A cry of pain echoed through the villa!

"Taylor, I was just trying to help you get rid of the mosquito on your stomach. How could I hurt your baby? You've misunderstood me. You're so heartless!" It was Raven's voice.

Just then, a figure appeared at the entrance.

"Raven, what happened?"

Upon entering the villa, Alexander saw Raven's forehead colliding with the railing, causing her to bleed.

He hurried up the stairs and lifted Raven from the ground.

"Taylor, are you crazy? Do you want to ruin Raven's face? I never expected you to be so malicious. Let me make one thing clear: even if her face is damaged, I will still care for her. Don't expect me to look at you any differently."

I tried to explain, my voice filled with exhaustion, "I didn't do anything to her. She bumped into the railing on her own."

"I heard Raven crying. Are you trying to deceive me again? Apologize to her now."

"Why? Even if I apologize to anyone, I won't apologize to her."

I held my ground, meeting Alexander's gaze with unwavering resolve.

Witnessing my determination, Alexander shot me a stern glare and then turned to cradle Raven, preparing to leave.

As he turned away, Raven extended her leg without warning, aiming a kick at my stomach.

The touch seemed casual, but it was surprisingly strong, throwing me off balance and causing me to fall to the ground. The pain in my abdomen was dull but distinct. Clutching my stomach, I winced and turned pale.

"I'm sorry, Taylor. I didn't mean to," Raven stammered apologetically.

Alexander, watching from a distance, thought I might be exaggerating the pain to gain sympathy. He dismissed my discomfort, saying, "Taylor, stop pretending. Raven's leg barely touched you. Don't overreact."

However, when he noticed the beads of sweat on my forehead, he realized I was genuinely in pain.

Without hesitation, Alexander let go of Raven and scooped me up, rushing to the car. My blood stained his clothes as he held me.

"Drive faster!" he urged the driver impatiently.

The distance between us and the villa grew, and Raven's figure became smaller in the distance.

Her furious expression was etched in my mind, her eyes aflame with anger.

Taylor, you will pay for this!

At the hospital, the doctor's examination confirmed that both the baby and I were safe. The doctor remarked that the situation had been dire, and timely intervention had been crucial.

During my time in the hospital, Alexander visited me every day, bringing food made by the nanny each time.

I couldn't shake the feeling that he was driven by guilt.

After a few days, I was finally discharged from the hospital.

Sitting in the car on the way back to the villa, I mustered the courage to say, "Thank you."

I genuinely appreciated his help. Without his prompt action, I might have lost my child.

Could it be that he truly cared about our child?

Alexander's expression shifted uneasily. "Don't read too much into it. I'm just doing it to comfort Raven. She feels responsible for your hospitalization, and I feel guilty. Originally, she was planning to take care of you, but I couldn't leave her alone. That's why I came."

With that, he left without looking back.

I managed a wry smile.

He was taking care of me on Raven's behalf?

Could he really be kind to Raven?

Maybe he would protect Raven!

As I contemplated this, a tear escaped my eye, mingling with the bitterness in my mouth.

Time passed steadily, and though the child was safe this time, the fear lingered.

I dreaded the possibility of another miscarriage. So, I focused on taking care of myself and my baby, and thankfully, Raven didn't bother me again.

Consulting the pregnancy guidebook, I realized my next prenatal appointment was approaching. I made the necessary preparations, determined to prioritize the well-being of my child.

The day of the appointment arrived. Familiar with the process, I completed the examination quickly. Both the baby and I were declared healthy.

Exiting the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, I spotted the Pediatrics section nearby. Peering through the open door, I wondered whether I'd bring my child here in the future.

As I hesitated, my attention was drawn to the room's occupants. To my astonishment, I saw Alexander and Raven speaking to a doctor.

Intrigued, I listened in on their conversation through the partly open door. I caught snippets of their discussion, and my sense of unease intensified.

Returning to the villa, my spirits dropped. Over the next few days, I thought about how to approach Alexander about what I'd overheard. I feared what I might uncover, uncertain about the future.

Every day, I sat on the sofa, waiting for his return.

After a week, Alexander finally came home.

Summoning my courage, I confronted him directly. "You don't love me, do you? You only asked me to have a baby to save your 'treasure'?"

"I've explained this to you many times!" His response was as cold as ever. His gaze bore into me for a moment before he turned and headed upstairs, his footsteps carrying a hint of heaviness.

"Alexander, don't think I'm unaware. You wanted me to have a child simply to save Henry, didn't you?"

His pace halted on the stairs, and he replied icily, "And what else do you know? Go on, tell me!"

"Is it true that Henry has leukemia?"

"Yes, it's leukemia, a type of blood cancer," he responded after a brief pause.

"And there's only two months left for Henry?"

He nodded in confirmation.

I stood up, my voice tremulous, "Is it too late for our child to be born? Are you asking me to induce labor at seven months?"

Alexander's face tightened, and he turned his gaze away. "Don't even think about it. There won't be any issues. Medicine has advanced enough that a child born at seven months can lead a normal life. As long as their condition matches Henry's requirements, it will save Henry."

"Who can guarantee the success of such a match? What if it doesn't work?" I inquired, my voice laced with uncertainty.
