Chapter 1 The beginning

*CHAPTER ONE*

AUDREY'S POV

"Ugh, why do I always mess up orders", I watched as the customer threw me a disgusted look. He requested a latte and I served cappuccino. Fuck, my head isn't here today.

"Audrey, would you mind not leaving dissatisfied customers who in turn give us bad reviews on our page?" Janelle said looking pissed.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to, I didn't sleep well last night cause I got back really late from Neon, so I feel kinda woozy and dull".

"Yeah right, whatever. Just stop messing stuff up for the rest of us, not all of us can afford to date the boss's son you know?" she said bitterly with a lot of venom.

Okay that was mean and harsh. Janelle and I have been friends since high school and she knows me more than anybody else and most importantly she knows my relationship with Joseph isn't that serious.

"Janelle, what did you just say to me?, that's really mean you know, I'm your friend and I already apologized right?. Is there something else I'm missing?".

I'm Audrey Maria Ray and Janelle Sophie Anderson was my best friend since our high school cheerleading days. I was captain and she was second in command. I had long dark curly hair, olive skin and brown eyes, while Janelle was a redhead with green eyes and thin lips.

Back then, we both wanted to be cheer captain and I was eventually chosen because I fit the position more, I was prettier than Janelle. That week Janelle never spoke a word to me, she was hurt, I guess, so I just let her be. After some time, we were cool again. After high school graduation, I lost my dad to an accident. He and mom had a really big fight one night. He stormed off in anger, went to a bar, got really drunk and on his way back home, his car crashed into a company truck whose driver was sleeping behind the wheels. I always wondered which company that was. All we got at my dad's funeral was a fat envelope and a condolence letter with no name on it. We never knew the company, and I guess we never will. Ever.

My mom had no skills whatsoever, she was dad's trophy and as such never worked a day in her life. Dad's death broke her, she cried day and night. I took over my dad's position, I was now the bread winner, I didn't get to attend college, the money from the company, we survived on it till I started working and getting paid. It was difficult to get a job here in New York, with any qualifications. In comes Joseph Coleman, the son of a wealthy baker who owns big cafes and pastry shops all over Manhattan, they were filthy rich. Joseph has always had a crush on me right from our high school days. He was quarterback for the football team. I wasn't a whore but I had responsibilities and for Joseph to put in a good word for him, I had to do something for him. That's how I became his girlfriend and got a job.

Janelle knew all this, I never loved Joseph, I don't love him and I never will love him.

"You heard me, Audrey don't mess up orders anymore, if you're feeling sleepy go home, or better still go to Joseph he should be in his office" Janelle said without even looking at me.

She really has a problem, now I am sure, very sure. And I'm never one to start fights, so I chose to ignore.

I tried to be more careful and attentive to the customers in the shop. We got through the morning hours with no other problems.

It was around three in the afternoon and I was wiping off the tables, when I felt arms wrap around my waist. I knew who it was without turning around, Joseph.

"Hey babe, how's it going" he said

"Good, it's been good, what are you doing here?"

"I literally own this place, don't forget Audrey".

Of course blond haired, blue eyed arrogant asshole Joseph Coleman. How typical.

"I know, just what are you doing outside your office"

"I came to see my girlfriend, watching from the cameras was no fun. You're so much better up close, and you're all mine". I felt his hands trail lower to my butt, I held it before he got there.

"Anything I can help you with Sir?" I said, emphasis on sir.

"A lot of things, a lot of exciting things Audrey". I knew what he meant by that. I might have agreed to date Joseph but I've never slept with him, we never went past first base, and I don't plan on it. Soon as I'm stable, I'm breaking up with his arrogant ass.

"What do you need me for, sir?"

"A cup of coffee with cream and sugar and a slice of cheesecake"

"Anything else sir?"

"Yes, bring yourself along as well, pretty girl" he said, touching my face. It took everything in me to just stand still and not smack his hand away but I needed this job, I needed the money. Mom had cancer and chemotherapy is expensive.

"Alright sir"

"Good girl" he said, smacking my ass as he left. Ew.

I heard the bell on the door chime signaling a new customer, as I turned I saw Janelle looking at me, I'm sure she saw my exchange with Joseph. She swiftly diverted her attention to the customer who was placing orders. What's her problem?.

I looked up at the new customer and my breath got hitched in my throat, he was out of this world. Gray eyes, full lips, chiseled jawline and raven black hair. He was extremely handsome. I was gobsmacked.

"Welcome to heaven Cafe, sir" I said as I managed to get my words out.

"Whatever, someone come serve me now, you take down my order now and fast" he said in a deep manly voice, such a pity that pretty face came with a nasty attitude. We can't all be properly trained now can we?

"Sorry sir, I already have an order to deliver now, you'll please have to wait until the servers are free and done with their current orders then you'll be served" I said, maybe with an eye roll too. Yes, unprofessional I know but I can't stand the nasty attitude.

"Did you just speak to me in that manner?, do you know who I am, young lady?"

Chapter 2 An arrogant customer

*CHAPTER TWO*

AUDREY'S POV

I've dealt with arrogant customers lots of times. The usual "I'll shut down this place", "I'll deal with you", "you'll hear from my lawyer" and so on and so on. But something about this particular one scared me. He seemed serious and scary like a man not to be messed with. Plus, I noticed since he walked in,it's like everybody else froze and it was just two of us talking here, that's strange.

"With all due respect sir, I don't know you but in here, we don't tolerate rude customers, so it's either you wait patiently or you desist from creating a scene in here, this is a business place" I said with every boldness in me.

"Have you completely lost your mind, Audrey? What the hell do you think you're doing?". Janelle said, dragging me away from the handsome rude man. That was strange, she seemed panicky and scared.

"I'm so sorry Mr. Davis, she hasn't been feeling okay today, how may I serve you sir?". She said, with that sultry smile she gives every time she's around men she wants.

I looked at the man, to see if his face rings a bell but no, it's all blank. I don't know him but he seems important for Janelle to react that way.

"Coffee, black" he said in that deep voice without looking up from his phone as he sat cross legged like he owned the whole world.

"Audrey, enough of this stupidity!"Janelle screeched. I hadn't realized I said that last part out loud. Now I was ashamed.

The customer was now looking up at me, amused. I'm really getting fired today, Joseph can't save me now.

"Yes, you can say I own the whole world, I can as well own YOU, if I wanted you, I can buy this place and run it to the ground by tomorrow morning as well, do you know why Audrey?, because I, Rome Vincent Davis, own the world. Now what do you own?". He said in a scary voice. I was really scared now, what will I do about my mom's bill if I get fired from here today. Oh God, please no

"I'm sorry Mr. Rome, I shouldn't have said that, that was rude and unprofessional and I'm ashamed of myself". I said with my head down.

"Get out of here Audrey, I'll handle things over here, you're making a mess of everything". Janelle said to me

"I'm sorry" I said as I left.

I decided to deliver Joseph's order after that drama. I walked to his office and knocked at the door.

"No, I'll see you tomorrow night, I promise. Yeah sure, I will. You too". I could hear Joseph talking on the phone, I knocked again guessing he'd dropped the call.

"Hey Audrey baby, what's up?" He was acting weird.

"Here's your coffee, sir" I said, handing him his order.

"Come in for awhile, stay with me"

I sat on the couch in his office, he dropped the coffee and cake and came and sat beside me.

"I've missed you"

"You literally just saw me few minutes ago Joseph"

"Shhh, I want you around me, all the time". He placed his hand on mine and placed a kiss on my cheek. Here we go again.

He kissed me on my neck and turned my face to place a kiss on my lips, it lasted for a while until I felt he was taking this to a point I didn't want it to get to.

"Stop, Joseph, we've talked about this right?" I stood up from the couch and faced him

"Yeah but you're my girlfriend, and that's your job"

"My job here is to wait on your customers and give them exceptional service not to be my boss's whore in my workplace"

"So the problem is the place?, 8 pm, my place"

"Joseph, I work till 3 am at Neon, I thought I told you this"

"Oh yeah, the nightclub and bar job thingy, yeah yeah yeah, kinda rings a bell"

"I'm sorry I have to go"

"Hey wait up" I heard him say as I closed the door to his office. I was on my way home as I noticed my two top buttons were undone by Joseph. That pervert. I was fixing them and not looking where I was going, till I crashed into someone.

"Is this how you work?, I fear for this establishment then". It was Mr. Davis

"I'm sorry sir, I wasn't looking," I said.

He looked at me curiously and intensely, and I started wondering what was wrong.

"Is there something wrong Mr. Davis?"

Before he could reply, his phone rang

"Yes, Suzy, now?. Is he drunk? What's the saying? Shit, i'll be there soon" He hung up and began to leave

"Sir, is everything okay?" He turned to me

"Yeah, nothing to concern yourself with and fix your face, people might get the wrong idea about this establishment" he turned and left immediately, without a second glance. I took out my mirror from my purse, I was red with embarrassment. I looked like a cheap hoover, my hair was disheveled, my red lipstick smeared. I looked horrible. This was all Joseph's fault.

I walked back home to get ready for my shift at Neon bar and nightclub.

"Mom, I'm home now" I said I walked into our home

"Baby, is that you?" I could hear my mom's soft voice from the kitchen

"Hi mom, how are you doing"

"I'm alright, just wanted to make something for you to take to your work tonight so you won't starve till morning. Don't want you developing an ulcer". My mother was the sweetest person ever, too bad that bad stuff happens to good people. She has stage three colon cancer. Chemotherapy hurts her alot and the illness turned a once ravishing beauty into a shadow of herself. I would do anything for my mom to be fine again.

"Hurry and freshen up, don't want to be late to work now, do you?"

"Be down in a bit!". I said I hurried up the stairs

"Someone called the house today, just before you came in" Mom said

Chapter 3 Life of Rome

CHAPTER THREE

ROME'S POV

When you have a life like mine, not so many things interest you and grab your attention like the little girl with dark hair.

I was born into a family where you're taught that emotions make you weak and they're like a switch so you have to turn them off at all times. I had a twin brother and a sister. People can hardly tell my brother and I apart, not even my family can except my mother, the breathtaking Rowena Elaine Davis. I guess it's maternal instinct or something like that. Romeo, my twin brother, had facial hair while I didn't. I was clean shaven. At least for now. I was 2 minutes older, so I'm the older one. I took over the family business 10 years ago when I was 23 years old. I'm 33 now and at the top of my game. I was a multi billionaire. Owned properties everywhere you could think of. Made more money than I can count and could ever need.

I needed nothing, especially not a whiny whore like Freya Isla Montgomery being forced down my throat. I wasn't a man to be bossed around or told what to do and I made that known by refusing to marry her to fester a stronger bond between her father's company, Stone Incorporated and ours Davis Industries. I had enough, my company was doing good and I hated the sight of Freya, she irritated me like hell.

Romeo on the other hand, seemed taken by the tramp, not my problem. So, I helped him out and instead passed her on to him. So now, Freya is betrothed to my twin but still wants me. Pathetic.

When Romeo speaks about her, it's like he sees someone else and not the blond haired whore I know. But then again, one man's meat is another man's poison. Different strokes for different folks.

I was supposed to have a meeting by 12 at a restaurant with a client but I canceled because Romeo found out this morning that his precious Freya was a cheat. Wow, I'm not surprised. He apparently walked in on her with the young son of that famous cafe owner. Typical.

So, I canceled my meeting to actually see what the boy in question looked like and to see how well their business was doing. Suzy, my secretary sent me a photograph and a little information about him.

27 years old, blond hair, blue eyes, cocky, a playboy and dating his worker and sleeping with her best friend. Unprofessional.

He would run whatever they've achieved down the ground if he continues like this.

I walked into the shop and saw the Audrey girl. I was stunned by her beauty for a while. Dark hair, pink lips, dark eyebrows. She was gorgeous. But unfortunately had poor taste to be dating trash like Joseph Coleman, I was disappointed, she could aim better. I got it together, I was Rome fucking Davis, I've seen hotter women than her. I wasn't going to get swooned by her charms.

She came off as rather mouthy and rude, I was initially angry but it later turned into amusement. She was a spitfire. I was later attended to by he co worker, who was more interested in flashing her cleavage than working. Cheap.

The one who I came to see didn't show himself, I'd just have to let Romeo deal with his issue, I had better things to do.

Audrey bumped into me on her way out, she wasn't looking but was focused on fixing her buttons. This is why I don't tolerate workplace romance, it's unprofessional and does not speak well of a business.

Raising her head, she looked disheveled, smeared lipstick and messed up hair. Even a blind man can tell what went down. How disappointing.

I felt a pang of jealousy and anger but before I could continue the conversation Suzy called.

"Hello Sir, you have to hurry back now sir"

"Is something wrong suzy?"

"Yes sir, your brother is causing a commotion in the office right now, and he's drunk"

"Shit, I'm on my way". I hung up and started walking away, forgetting the dark haired girlfriend standing there awkwardly.

"Is everything okay?" she asked carefully

I told her everything was fine, and told her to fix her appearance. People might think this is a whore house with how she looks right now.

I left for the office and got there in no time.

"Where is Rome, you fucking idiots"

"Do you know who I am?, I will crush you all with just a phone call and leave you and your families destitute"

"What the hell is happening in my company Romeo?"
