Can Valerie navigate the treacherous world of wealth and deception, or will she fall victim to his games once more?

Chapter 1 Back with the bang

Five years. Five years since Valerie escaped this fancy city and her ex-husband's mean tricks. Now, she was back, and revenge felt good.

Valerie put on big sunglasses, hoping nobody would recognize her. Click-clack, her fancy shoes walked on the dirty street as she found a secret entrance to the giant Alan Tower.

The security guard knew her! His eyes popped wide. Up she went in a shiny elevator. The doors opened to a fancy waiting room with rich ladies holding expensive purses. One lady, all diamonds and fake smiles, glared at Valerie.

"Ms. Alan," the receptionist said snooty-like, not even looking up. "Mr. Alan is waiting."

The other ladies gasped. Valerie didn't care. She walked in, making the air feel weird. The office door opened, revealing a super handsome man who looked like he belonged in a magazine. He had a few more grey hairs now, but his cold blue eyes were still the same.

"Valerie," the man, Alexander Alan, said in a smooth voice that sounded dangerous. "Surprise."

"Hi Alexander," Valerie said, trying to sound calm. "Surprise isn't exactly the word I'd use. Especially after what happened."

He offered her a fancy chair, but she didn't sit. Instead, she opened her bag and showed him the worn teddy bear. Alexander's face turned white as a ghost.

"Is that Little Star?" Valerie asked, her voice angry. "The one your security guys 'lost' when I left?"

Silence. Then, Alexander smiled, but it wasn't a nice smile.

"Ah, memories," he said in a bored voice. "So, why are you here all of a sudden?"

Valerie leaned closer, her voice low and serious. "I have a deal, Alexander. A contract, a lot of money, and a chance for me to get back what you took."

Chapter 2 The Proposition

Alexander's smile faltered for a brief moment, a flicker of something akin to fear crossing his icy blue eyes. He recovered quickly, though, regaining his composure.

"Little Star," he drawled, his voice devoid of warmth. "An... interesting choice of bargaining chip."

Stephanie ignored the sarcasm, her gaze unwavering. "It's not a chip, Alexander. It's our son."

The revelation hung heavy in the air, a bomb dropped into the sterile office environment. Alexander's face drained of color, the carefully constructed facade crumbling for a split second. He stared at the worn teddy bear, a thousand unspoken questions swirling in his eyes.

"Son?" he finally managed, his voice a hoarse whisper.

Stephanie met his gaze, her own eyes hardening with resolve. "Yes. The one you conveniently forgot about when your security team 'lost' Little Star the night I left."

A tense silence stretched between them, thick with the weight of the past five years. Stephanie could almost hear the gears turning in Alexander's mind as he calculated his next move.

"And what exactly are you proposing, Stephanie?" he finally asked, his voice regaining its usual smoothness, though a hint of unease remained.

Stephanie took a deep breath, steeling herself for the negotiation to come. "A contract marriage, Alexander. Six months. Public appearances, social events, the whole charade."

Alexander scoffed. "Why on earth would I agree to something so... ludicrous?"

"Because," Stephanie pressed, leaning forward, "it would benefit both of us. I get a substantial financial settlement, enough to start a new life for myself and our son, away from all this." She gestured around the opulent office with a hint of disgust.

"And what do I get?" Alexander countered, his eyes narrowing.

"Publicly," Stephanie said, her voice dropping to a low murmur, "a loving wife, a perfect family image. Privately, a truce. No more digging into the past, no more attempts at revenge."

Alexander's gaze flickered to the teddy bear again, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face. "And what happens after six months?"

"We go our separate ways," Stephanie said simply. "No strings attached."

The air crackled with unspoken tension as Alexander contemplated the offer. The potential benefits were clear - a chance to bury the past and maintain his carefully crafted image. But the thought of being back in close proximity to Stephanie, especially with the revelation of their son, sent a wave of unease through him.

"I need time to consider this," he finally said, his voice tight.

Stephanie nodded curtly. "Of course. But my offer won't be on the table indefinitely, Alexander. The longer you wait, the less leverage you have."

With that, she turned and walked towards the door, leaving the stunned billionaire alone with his thoughts and the weight of his past actions.

Chapter 3 Whispers in the Hallway

Exhaling a shaky breath, Valerie stepped out of Alexander's office and into the waiting room. The air crackled with unspoken curiosity as the other women, perched like jeweled peacocks, scrutinized her with renewed interest. Every click of her heels resonated with the weight of the bombshell she'd just dropped.

Ignoring their gazes, Valerie held her head high and marched past the reception desk, the click-clack of her heels a defiant counterpoint to the hushed whispers that followed her like a malevolent breeze. She reached the elevator and pressed the down button, her heart still thrumming in her chest.

The elevator doors slid open, revealing a young intern whose eyes widened in surprise at the sight of her. Valerie offered a tight smile and stepped inside, the doors closing with a soft whoosh.

Downstairs, outside Alan Tower, the crisp spring air felt invigorating after the sterile atmosphere of the office. She took a deep breath, trying to process the rollercoaster ride of emotions that had just unfolded.

The revelation of their son, Ethan, had been a gamble, a calculated move to shake Alexander's carefully constructed foundation. Now, she had to wait for his response, the uncertainty gnawing at her like a persistent rodent.

Valerie hailed a taxi and sank back into the leather seat. The city whizzed past in a blur of neon lights and towering buildings. She pulled out her phone, a photo of a young boy with bright, inquisitive eyes filling the screen. It was Ethan, the living embodiment of her love and her pain.

He was five years old now, a constant reminder of the life she'd left behind. A life she'd happily sacrificed to protect him from the ruthless world Alexander inhabited. Tears welled up in her eyes at the thought of him. Bringing him into this mess terrified her, but the desire for justice burned just as brightly.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed. It was a text from an unknown number: "Interesting proposition, Ms. Thompson. Perhaps we can discuss it further." There was no signature, just a string of cryptic emojis – a winking face, a rose, and a pair of crossed fingers.

Valerie's heart pounded. Who could this be? An ally or another thorn in her side? She typed a cautious reply, "Who is this?"

The phone buzzed again: "A friend with a vested interest in the future Mrs. Alan."

Valerie frowned. A friend of Alexander's? Or perhaps someone on her side, someone who knew the truth about his past? The message sparked a flicker of hope within her, a reminder that she wasn't alone in this game of shadows.

Back at her cozy apartment, tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, Valerie paced the floor, the text message replaying in her mind. She needed to figure out who sent it, but more importantly, she needed to solidify her strategy.

Opening her laptop, she logged into a hidden encrypted folder. Inside, a trove of documents awaited – financial reports, emails, and news articles, all meticulously collected over the past five years. They were the pieces of a puzzle, evidence pointing towards the truth behind Alexander's shady business dealings.

Her plan wasn't just about revenge; it was about exposing him for who he truly was. The contract marriage was a means to an end, a way to infiltrate his world and gather more concrete proof.

As the day bled into night, Valerie delved deeper into the files, her resolve hardening with each piece of information she uncovered. She wouldn't let Alexander manipulate her again. This time, she was playing to win.

The next morning, Valerie woke up with a renewed sense of purpose. She had a message to send – to Alexander and anyone else who dared to underestimate her. She would be back at his office, waiting for his answer.

Dressed in a tailored black suit that accentuated her sharp features, Valerie strode towards Alan Tower. Today, the stakes were even higher. Today, she would either secure her bargain or walk away, ready to take down Alexander on her own terms.

The elevator doors slid open to reveal a different scene this time. Gone were the bored socialites; instead, a flurry of activity filled the waiting room. Assistants scurried around, phones pressed to their ears, and a tense energy crackled in the air.

Valerie's sharp eyes immediately spotted Robert Thorne, Alexander's right-hand man, pacing back and forth in front of the office doors. He was a man perpetually on the edge, his sharp features and slicked-back hair belying a calculating mind.

As their eyes met, a flicker of something akin to annoyance crossed Robert's face. He approached her with a forced smile, his voice a low murmur. "Ms. Thompson. Back so soon?"

"An unexpected development," Valerie replied coolly, returning his chilly gaze. "Seems like things are a bit... hectic around here."

Robert scoffed. "Just some... unforeseen complications. Mr. Alan is unavailable at the moment."

"That's a shame," Valerie said, her voice dripping with feigned sympathy. "I was hoping to hear his decision."

Robert's smile faltered for a brief moment, a flicker of unease crossing his eyes. "I'm sure you'll hear from him soon, Ms. Thompson." He glanced at his watch pointedly. "Perhaps you should come back another time."

Valerie held his gaze, unfazed by his attempt to dismiss her. "Actually," she said, her voice taking on a dangerous edge, "I think I'll wait."

She pulled out a book from her bag, a well-worn copy of Jane Eyre, and settled down on a plush armchair. The other occupants of the waiting room stole curious glances at her, their earlier nonchalance replaced by a sense of hushed anticipation.

As the minutes stretched into an hour, the tension in the room grew thicker. Robert shot her several disgruntled looks, but Valerie remained unfazed, turning the pages of her book with a studied nonchalance.

Finally, the office door swung open, revealing a harried-looking secretary. "Ms. Thompson," she said, her voice breathless, "Mr. Alan will see you now."

Valerie rose, a triumphant glint in her eyes. Ignoring the curious stares of the others, she marched past Robert, who scowled after her like a kicked dog, and into Alexander's office.

The atmosphere in the office had undergone a similar shift. Papers were strewn across the desk, and Alexander himself looked like he hadn't slept a wink. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his usually immaculate suit was slightly rumpled.

He looked up as Valerie entered, his expression unreadable. "Ms. Thompson," he said, his voice tight. "Come in. Please, close the door."

Valerie did as instructed, the click of the door shutting out the rest of the world. She stood before him, arms crossed, waiting for him to speak.

The silence stretched on for a moment, thick with unspoken emotions. Finally, Alexander broke the tension.

"We need to talk," he said, his voice raspy.
