Naya's POV
"Did you hear? Alpha Liam Bloodton is dead!"
"Jeez, what happened to him?"
The mournful air hangs around school this morning. Gladly, the students have something else to talk about, not hate on me today.
The death of the Alpha has caused such an uproar that school has been discontinued for today, and everyone has to go home.
I walk to my locker and retrieve my books. Walking past the clusters of students, none of them even glance at me. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I am not bothered about the death of our Alpha, but honestly, it's the least of my problems.
My name is Naya Woods, and I'm the most hated girl in this high school. I'm a werewolf, like everyone else, but I never got my wolf. My sixteenth birthday was devastating because my transformation never came. When my mother noticed that I wasn't changing, she took all the money under her bed and carried me to a seer in the dangerous woods. Nothing came out of it, sadly.
My mother always prayed that I shouldn't suffer the same fate as her, but unfortunately...
My mother's story is different. She was a fierce werewolf, but one day it was like her wolf died. She never heard her or spoke to her again.
Since my mother and I didn't have wolves, we were the least members of our city pack. We were denied rights and protection that other werewolves received, but Mum has been strong. We have been pushing through. So I make up for my ability by being the best student in the entire school. I have never gotten less than an A in a test, but that has done very little for me. Everyone always looks at me and my mother like we have shit on us, they avoid us.
So, pardon me, if I don't care too much that the Alpha (whom my mother wrote to many times to help us) has died and I don't show sympathy...
I slam the door of my locker shut to see Sherry, my best friend, making a face at me.
"Oh my God!" I flinch. "Sherry, come on!"
"Naya, it was a joke!" She laughs.
She holds my hand and we start to walk down the hall, between the students. Sherry is beautiful, the boys love Naya. I have no idea why she is even friends with me. Her father is rich and she already got her wolf, she has no reason to be my friend.
"Did you hear, Alpha Liam Bloodton is dead?" She says.
"Yeah, that kind of sucks for him," I say without emotion.
"Why are you not as excited as everyone else?" She turns to me.
"I don't know, maybe because I barely slept last night." I sigh.
She stands in front of me, with her hands folded.
"You don't get it, do you? Everyone is not talking because the Alpha is dead. They are talking because his son just came to the city!"
I roll my eyes at her. If I don't care about the Alpha, why should I care about his son?
She raises her hands in confusion, "I don't understand you, sometimes. The girls are excited because there is going to be a meeting later today, everyone is invited."
Yeah, everyone. Except my mother and I.
"You know I can't go, Sherry." I sigh. " I don't have a pass, and besides. I am not interested in seeing this new Alpha."
"Come on, you know I'm not too, but the girls said that the dude is smoking hot and I want to see that first hand!" She squeaks with excitement. "But, I can't go, my sister is ill."
"Oh, Sherry..." I slap my face. I know what's coming.
"You have to go, okay? Just make sure that you see him and then we can discuss how fine he is." She smiles.
Before I can say anything, Sherry has taken out her pass from her bag and presses it into my hand. I know, my best friend is not a slut, she just likes to assess guys and their looks.
I know that she has zero interest in the Alpha's son because she has a massive crush on another Alpha's son, Zayn. She swears that she is going to marry him.
"Please, do this for me, okay?" She pulls my cheek.
"Sherry..." I drag an inhale.
"Thanks! I love you!" She kisses my cheek as she giggles.
I snort with laughter, Sherry is such a sweet girl.
I look at the door and everyone stops talking. I swallow a gulp as I see my mother standing at the entrance of the school. She is in her cleaners' overall, it's orange, and her hair is tied up in a messy bun.
"Hello, Miss Woods!" Sherry waves at her.
"Hey, sweetheart." She waves at Sherry. "Naya, we've got to go, now."
"Bye, Sherry," I say under my breath.
I half run out of the hall, pretending that I don't hear the taunting laugh of my Schoolmates.
"Look at her hurrying to help mummy dive into the garbage!"
I push the door open and rush into my mum's old car.
I push my hair away from my face as I try to steady my breathing. It's a nightmare, every day. My mother hops into the car and starts to engine.
"Why were you running like a thief?" She frowns, looking at me through the mirror.
"Nothing, mum. Let's go." I point ahead.
She knows why I was running, she bites down her lips as she drives the car.
"I just got a contract a few hours ago. You are going to help me clean the Bloodton mansion before the meeting." She tells me. "You heard the man died, right?"
"Yes, mum." I prop my chin against my hand.
I would have preferred to stay at home and read my books, but my mum needs my help at her job. It's either that, or we don't get dinner for a few days to come.
*****
The Bloodton stone mansion is the biggest private property in the city, it has over a hundred rooms in it.
My mother insisted that she won't be outsourcing to other cleaners because she knows that this money will go a long way for us. So I've cleaned till my hands are aching and my eyes have grown weak. We will have to come for two more days before we are done with the cleaning. I'm tired, but I keep on cleaning because I see how happy my mother is about the money we are going to get.
The sky has fallen and the meeting has started, I can tell by the number of cars I see from the windows.
We have cleaned the part of the house where the meeting is happening, we are the only ones on this side of the house. Now that we are done with the day's work, my mother packs the tools into the boxes.
"Go on to the car." She glances at me. "Don't worry about the things, I will bring them. Your classmates are here, I don't want anyone to see you with cleaning tools."
I see the pain in her eyes, she knows that I hate doing this. But it's kind of sweet that she is looking out for me. I turn around and walk down the long stairs. I'm going to wait for my mother in the car.
As I walk, I mistakenly bump into a really turn man. He turns to look at me, a frown of displeasure on his face.
My God, he is so good looking. I gulp down air as his cold eyes pierces me.
"Watch where you are going." He tells me as he walks away.
"Sorry." I mumble.
I don't know who he is, but he is so rude. And hot too....
As I pass through the hall that divides the house into two different parts, I see the sign outside and the man in a suit by the door. That's where the meeting is taking place, but yeah, me and my mother are not allowed in there.
I stop with fright, I see two of my classmates walking in, but they stop. They have seen me too. They smirk as they whisper to each other. They laugh wickedly as they walk in majestically. My throat aches with the pain, I hate getting treated like this.
Something rises in me as I start to feel my back pocket, the pass that Sherry gave me is still with me. I walk towards the door, my gait is confident, but my heart is beating fast.
"Good evening, I'm here for the meeting." I hand the pass to the guard.
The man looks at where I have come from and frowns. "What were you doing there?"
"Finding the bathroom, I have a weak bladder." I shrug. "They are the worst, right?"
He looks at the pass, trying to see how authentic it is. Finally, he hands it back. "May the spirit of our Alpha rest in peace."
"Amen." I take back the pass. I look over my shoulder before I walk into the meeting. I will be out before my mother even notices.
Naya's POV
The place is crowded, everyone is wearing black and holding glasses of champagne in their hands. I'm wearing black jeans and a brown hoodie. I am out of place, but I stand right behind so that no one notices me. The girls from the school almost look my way, but I duck. The last thing I want is for them to cause trouble for me.
As I slowly walk through the crowd of people, I strain my neck to catch a glimpse of what's happening in the middle of the room. Everyone is so quiet, I wonder what they are all staring at. Finally, I see it– or am I supposed to say him?
I see the new Alpha, Erus Bloodton. He is standing right there in the middle with his mother, Mrs. Bloodton. My lips part as soon as I see him, it's him! It's the same rude handsome man I saw! He is easily the tallest person in the room, his mother looks so small beside him. He has a buzz cut and his eyes are a kind of piercing brown. The girls are right, he is so handsome. He is wearing a black suit, hands in pocket and shoulders stiff. He doesn't look like someone whose father just died, he has such an expressionless face.
A woman, who is recognized as a seer, is holding tied incense that is glowing as white smoke dances around– she is blessing him."May your reign be greater than your father's." She mutters. "You will lead this pack to greater heights. May the rogues be far from us.."
He looks nonchalant, slightly annoyed like he doesn't want to be there. Quite a strange boy. Something jerks me and I remember why I am here.
I quickly take out my phone to make a video of him. Sherry owes me one for this. I concentrate on making the video, making sure to zoom in on his face.
Suddenly, the seer stops halfway, closes her eyes, and inhales dramatically. "Oh, the moon goddess, she has a message for you..." she breathes out.
Alpha Erus glances at his mother, I know she is the reason why he is tolerating this. His mother bites down her lips and takes a step closer to the seer.
"What does she say, great seer?" she asks.
The seer opens her eyes so widely that I fear her eyes will fall out.
"His mate. His mate is in the room with us." The seer nods with vigor.
Everyone in the room immediately gasps. Wow, this has just gotten more interesting. I see parents snap their fingers and their daughters run toward them. They adjust their hair and dresses. The young Alpha rolls his eyes and I almost laugh. This is premium gossip, Sherry better buy me lunch after I have shown this to her.
The seer starts to walk around, her lips moving as she speaks words not understood by any of us. She is barefoot, her dress is so medieval, nothing like what any of us are wearing.
Her hand shakes as she moves around the room, she is turning around in a slow circle. I see the way the faces of the girls fall with disappointment as she passes them. Who is she going to be? If it's a girl from our school she will be so popular by tomorrow.
The seer keeps moving, and she comes closer to where I stand. I focus on the video, I want to capture the face of the girl when the seer chooses her.
"Show us, moon goddess! Show us the chosen one!" The seer shakes with spiritual craze.
Suddenly, her shaken finger stops. She doesn't move again. I hear a gasp, like someone bursting with relief. A girl has been picked. She is shaken with uncried tears and excitement, she grabs her mother's hand as her face turns red.
"Is it me?!" She asks in a shaky voice. "It's me!"
"No, child, it's not you." The seer shakes her head. "It's her."
The men standing in front of me give way immediately and boom, the spotlight falls on me. Me. Naya Woods.
I don't know what to do, so I quickly drop the phone into my pocket. I look behind me, but there is no one there. I'm the one who she is pointing at.
"Me– me?" I touch my chest.
"Yes, you, my child." She affirms. "The moon goddess has chosen her, she is the destined mate to the young Alpha!"
Loud murmurs fill. the crowd, it's probably because they don't even know who I am. I'm not an "official" member of the pack, my mother and I.
This has got to be a silly mistake, what's happening to me? I want to run out of here, but my legs won't move! I am standing there, watching everyone looking at me, Erus Bloodton is looking at me.
I see his jaw tighten and his eyes look like they are burning holes through me. He doesn't like me, I can tell immediately. This has got to be a bad dream...wake me up. My anxiety rises in my chest, I feel like I'm about to faint.
"Naya!"
Everyone turns to the door. My mother is holding our cleaning equipment, she looks bloody pissed at me. She's going to kill me.
****
My mum and I are sitting in Mrs Bloodton's office, we've been here for over an hour. My mother has been staring at the wall, she hasn't spoken to me, looked at me, or even touched the mountain of food that was brought to us.
"Mum," I touch her hand, begging her to speak to me.
She doesn't react, she is pretending like I'm not right here.
"Mum, please say something." I croak with built-up tears. "Please, anything."
"I told you to go to the car, Naya." She looks at me with pain. "Why don't you ever listen to me?"
I know she is right. If I had gone straight to the car, this would have never happened. Another girl would have probably been picked, we would have gone home and at least had some steaks for dinner with what we'd earned.
The door suddenly opens and Mrs Bloodton walks in. My mum and I immediately stand up. Mrs. Bloodton is a fucking legend around here, seeing her up close makes me shake. She is very beautiful, she is the Luna of this pack, and she also co-owns the Bloodton empire with her now late husband. She is beautiful, she smiles brightly at us and I melt.
"I'm sorry Luna, my daughter was supposed to go straight to the car, we didn't mean trouble." My mum begs.
"Oh, come on, Miss Woods, I'm sure she is just being a normal teenager." Mrs Bloodton laughs as she touches my mother's arm.
I'm stunned. I would have sworn that this woman would have never touched my mother with a ten-foot pole.
"Please, sit." She gestures to the couches. "I've kept you here too long, let's just go straight to the point."
My mother and I glance at each other as we sit gingerly. The pretty couches aren't worthy of us.
"I'm sorry about what happened, the seer is probably too old. We should appoint a new one." She chuckles and waves off. "So, I guess it's best for all of us to just get over it."
I inhale calmly.
"So, this is my offer." Mrs Bloodton adjusts on her seat. "I will make you both official members of the pack, Naya here gets a scholarship till she is done with school, and I will give you a new house and ten million dollars. All you have to do is to accept the young Alpha's rejection."
I almost smile. All of that just to accept a rejection? Count me in! I saw the way the young Alpha looked at me, he didn't like me even a bit and even though he is good-looking, I would rather eat sand than be his mate.
I'm bubbling with excitement, this is the best day of my life! Me and my mum aren't going to be poor anymore!
"Mum!" I whisper to my mum with a smile on her face, but it quickly goes away.
Why does she look so tense? Why hasn't she accepted this offer already? She sighs as she looks up at the Luna, Mrs Bloodton.
"Why does she have to accept a rejection of it was a mistake?" She asks. "If it's a mistake, that means she isn't his mate, right? Or is she really his mate?"
Mrs Bloodton laughs nervously. "Miss Woods, that's not important. This is a win-win situation. We will all be happy."
"I'm sorry, Luna, but my daughter won't be taking this deal."
"What?" Mrs Bloodton frowns.
"What?" My heart falls.
What's my mother talking about? Is she crazy? "Mum, what are you doing?" I ask her.
"Let me handle this." She tells me.
Mrs Bloodton stands up with her face screwed with anger. She is vexed that my mother is rejecting this offer. "You do realize what you are throwing away?" Mrs Bloodton scoffs.
"Yes, I do. That's why we don't take it. Thank you for everything, I will be back to complete the cleaning job tomorrow. Alone."
My mother grabs my hand roughly and hoists me to my feet. I try to protest, but my mother's stern face makes me shut up.
"We will leave now, Luna." My mother bows slightly. "May your husband rest in peace and may this Alpha's reign be prosperous."
*****
My mother has refused to say a word to me or explain why she rejected the Bloodton family's offer. She knows that we need the money, and she knows that I need the scholarship, so why did she do something as foolish as rejecting it? She has taken my phone and also refused to explain herself to me. She also made me skip school for two days and it's been absolute torture.
Finally, she has agreed for me to go back to school, but not after she has warned me not to speak to anyone about what happened at the Bloodton mansion.
She drops me off at the school and zooms off. I inhale deeply, gathering my strength as I walk into the school.
Everyone is looking at me weirdly, but I push it away. It's normal, they all hate me. I have barely gone to my locker when Sherry grabs my hand and pulls me into the bathroom.
"Ahh, what are you doing, Sherry?" I groan.
"Why haven't you replied to any of my texts or my calls?" She flicks her finger over my forehead.
"Ouch! My mum took my phone!" I hit her shoulder. "What's up with you? Why are you so weird?"
My heart drops as I see the look on Sherry's face. Something isn't right.
"I told you not to come to school in the texts I sent." She sighs. "Don't worry, I will drive you back home."
"Woah, what are you talking about?" I narrow my eyes with confusion.
She sighs as she palms her face. She can't even look at me.
"I heard what happened with Alpha Erus. Now he has placed a bounty on your head. Anyone who can get you to accept his rejection is going to be handsomely rewarded."
Naya's POV
My heart crashes to the ground, what's she talking about? I wait for her to laugh and slap her knee. I want her to pull my cheek and tell me that I'm so easy to prank, but that doesn't happen. She is telling the truth, Alpha Erus hates me so much that he has placed a bounty on my head.
"Oh my God.." I walk around with my hands pressed over my face.
Why is this happening to me?! It's not like I chose to be mated to that Alpha, I mean I don't even have a wolf in the first place. Is there a glitch or something? Why won't my mother just allow me to accept the rejection? I don't even want to be with the guy and he hates me already. Look, he has placed a bounty on my head. I'm feeling lightheaded, so I press myself against the wall. I don't even know what to do.
"Naya, are you listening to me?" Sherry raises my chin. "I will protect you, I will drive you home."
"I can't go home," I say. "I have a math test today."
Sherry looks at me as if I've gone crazy. "You realize that there is a fucking bounty on your head, right? Math isn't important right now!"
If there is anything I don't joke with, it's my grades. I've achieved perfect grades since kindergarten, and I'm not going to miss my test because a proud Alpha is mad that I'm his mate.
"We both know Mister Cyrus doesn't give make-up tests. If anyone tries anything funny, I will report it to the principal." I say, trying to convince myself that I will be fine.
Sherry folds her arms. "How are you sure that the principal isn't one of those people that wants the bounty?"
"Sherry, I will be fine." I smile at her. "Don't worry, I will call my mother after the math test. She will come to pick me up."
I know that Sherry isn't happy about this, she is worried for my safety, but she shrugs.
"Just keep close to me, okay?" She tells me. "Thank God for the school's no-shifting policy. The worst they can do is to use their words."
"Yeah. Come on, let's get to class before we are late."
We both leave the bathroom and the bell goes off. The students start to head back to the classes.
I see one of my favorite teachers, Miss Dallas. I smile at her direction. "Good morning, Miss Dallas!"
She looks straight at me, then looks away. I take back waving back, like I've just touched fire. If my best teacher just ignored me, that meant that everyone is aware of the bounty.
*****
The math test is very quick, I read very well and also, I'm good at math. Mister Cyrus hardly looks at me as I drop my finished paper on his desk.
EVERYONE, even the teachers, have been giving me attitude all day. Although no one has spoken to me. Only Sherry. I look at Sherry, she is biting her pen as she looks at me. She knows what I want to do, but she shakes her head, trying to discourage me.
I draw a sigh as I turn back to Mister Cyrus."May I use the bathroom, sir?"
He waves me off. I step out of the class, pretending that I don't see Sherry's eyes following me. I hurry to the bathroom, I need a little bit of time by myself.
I walk into the bathroom and lock myself in a stall. I would have called my mother and told her everything, but I don't have my phone with me. After practicing breathing for a while, I walk out of the bathroom to see that three other girls from another class are there.
They were laughing and talking, but that ceased as soon as they sight me. They are glaring, but I don't give them any attention. I just wash my hands in one of the sinks.
"Naya Woods." One of them says with hate. "My sister saw you cleaning one of the Bloodton bathrooms yesterday, but as usual, you had to have all attention on you."
I shut my eyes, slightly. It's taking so much to ignore these girls.
"Why don't you accept his rejection already?" Another hiss. "You already know that you will never be our Luna. You don't even have a wolf."
"You know, Brie, I would be more bothered about something else if my sister is currently sleeping with all the boys in the combat team," I say with a smile. "Why don't you leave me alone?"
The three girls all gasp at my audacity.
"What did you say?"
"Leave me alone," I repeat.
"You're lucky we aren't allowed to shift. I won't even waste my time on a wolfless girl." Brie chuckles.
"And I won't even waste my time on a dog," I mutter.
That gets Brie's attention. She growls as she runs towards me, transforming into a black wolf. She grabs me by my neck and slams me against the ground with a heavy thud.
I scream as she bites into my neck, but I fight back. I've already had a sharp pocket knife with me, for self-defense. I've never had to use it, but today, I take it and drive it into Brie's shoulder. She whimpers in pain as she lets go of my neck, but the damage has already been done. I lay on the ground, slowly drifting into unconsciousness. My blood is everywhere.
I see a hazy picture of Sherry appear in front of me. "Oh my God, what did you do to my friend?!"
****
I don't know how long I've been out, but I wake up in my bed with a bandage around my neck. My mother has dark circles around her eyes, only God knows how long she has been holding my hand. She sighs with relief as soon as she sees me opening my eyes.
"Oh my God, Naya don't scare me like that again." She sniffles as she pushes my hair away from my face.
"Mum?... What happened?" I can barely move.
"You got into a fight with this rich girl in school, Brie. She bit you, you stabbed her, but now you've been suspended." She tells me.
What?! Brie broke the school rules, but I'm the one who gets suspended for defending myself?! I close my eyes as tears flow out of them. I hate my life right now.
"Mum, I want to accept his rejection." I sob. "He doesn't want me, he is trying to kill me."
"I know, Naya, but I can't let you do that." She shakes her head. Her hand is pressed against my forehead.
"Why?" I wonder with tears. "Why won't you let me do it? I don't want to be his mate!"
"Naya being his mate is the only way that you can ever be safe." My mother tells me.
I pull my eyebrows together, an unsure look on my face. What's she saying?
"Can't you see? Even if you take all the money in the world, you will never be protected as a wolfless girl. You will always be a minority, you will never be loved." She says. "But if you are his mate, no one would dare touch you."
It seems like a blind has been taken off my eyes, I can now see my mother's point of view. I was so pressed by her stubbornness that I didn't see the clearer picture. My mother is looking out for me.
"Mum..."
"Hush, my baby." She heaves. "See, I don't know how much longer I can protect you. I can't trust you with anyone, but if the Alpha himself is your mate, I won't have to worry about you another day in my life."
Tears swell in my eyes. Even with my pain, I sit up and give my mother a tight hug. She's all I have. She can barely take care of herself, but she is still looking out for me.
We are still hugging when we hear the front door open and many feet stomping around the house. My mum and I are confused, before we know what's happening, my room is filled with guards wearing black suits. Mrs Bloodton walks in and my blood immediately goes cold.
"Well, well, well, I was told that you were not a troublemaker." She folds her hands. "What happened, Naya?"
"Your son happened." My mum angrily stands up. "How dare he try to hurt my daughter?!"
"Miss Woods, remember that you are talking about the Alpha." Mrs Bloodton says with pride. "If you want to keep your head, I would advise you to be more respectful."
My mother huffs, she is pissed off, but she can't do anything to the Luna.
Mrs Bloodton looks at me, I can swear that I see a slight smirk on the corner of her lips.
"I'm not rejecting your son if that's what you've come to ask," I say. "Let him increase the bounty on my head."
"Oh, child, I'm not here for that." She waves off with a smile. "I'm here for something else. Another kind of deal."
What? What's she saying?
"This is my new deal." She looks at my mother and I. "Since Naya is so obsessed with my son, fine. She won't be forced to accept a rejection under the condition that she is to give him a child immediately."
"If you think my daughter is a slut that you and your son can use as a baby-making machine, you are greatly mistaken." My mum scoffs.
"Fine." Mrs Bloodton shrugs. "A normal marriage, the way humans do. It's going to be a signing of documents alone, that's all. She won't be his official mate, he won't mark her till she has proven herself to be a trustworthy person."
The rules of this game have changed drastically. I look at my mother, it seems she likes this new rule very much.
"My daughter still gets her scholarship and everything else you promised?" My mother questions.
"In full."
I look at my mother and I can tell immediately. "Fine. It's a deal." I turn away as I feel my heart thumping heavily. I'm getting married?! To that Alpha who put a bounty on my head?! To that Bully?!
"Get her dressed in something nice, immediately." Mrs Bloodton instructs. "Before anything is signed, she will have to meet with the Alpha."
Wait, what?! Now?!
