CHAPTER ONE
*Sophia's POV*
I tore through the dense woods, my legs slamming against the ground, heart pounding as if my life depended on it-because it did. Somewhere behind me, a howl sliced through the silence, echoing through the trees, then... nothing. I strained to hear any movement, any sign of what might be following me, but only an eerie, unnatural silence lingered in the air.
My sprint slowed, my body hesitating, senses on high alert as I scanned my surroundings. Then, a flicker-a blur-whisked past the corner of my eye. I whipped around, but whatever it was had vanished, leaving only the unsettling notion that I might be seeing things.
Swallowing hard, I took a step back, nervously twisting in every direction. A low, menacing growl rumbled behind me, and a cold wave of dread washed over me. I turned, heart racing, and found myself face-to-face with a wolf. Its piercing green eyes glared at me, hunger gleaming in its stare. My fingers fumbled in my bag for the pepper spray, hands trembling so violently that it nearly slipped from my grasp.
The wolf lunged before I could react, and in my desperation, I tore off the cap and sprayed wildly. My heart thundered as I shouted, "Stay back, and I won't hurt you!" My words seemed to amuse it. The wolf dodged the spray, pouncing at me with terrifying speed, and in seconds, I was on the ground, pinned, the spray rolling out of my reach.
Its heavy paws pressed down, crushing me, and I felt my false bravado evaporate. Just as its teeth closed in, another wolf launched into it, snarling, and knocked it off me. I scrambled to my feet, lungs burning as I sprinted away, but I barely made it far when another powerful force tackled me from behind, slamming me against a tree. My vision blurred.
The second wolf approached slowly, its gaze fixed on me. I thought it had saved me-until it struck, sinking its fangs deep into my shoulder. Agony flared through my body, then darkness swallowed me whole.
__________
Distant voices murmured in the haze of my mind, faint but growing clearer as I floated toward consciousness. I recognized one voice among them, grounding and familiar.
"Sophia... Sophia! Can you hear me?"
I forced my eyes open, blinking against the light. Aunt Evelyn's face came into focus, worry etched into her features as she hovered beside me. My head throbbed painfully.
"Auntie... what happened?" My voice sounded strained and hoarse. "Why are you so worried?"
Evelyn ran a hand through her tangled hair, her eyes wide and frantic. "What happened?" she echoed, her voice rising. "I came home and found you collapsed by the door, unconscious! Do you realize how terrified I was?"
A pang of guilt shot through me. "I... I don't remember much."
"That's no excuse!" she scolded, rubbing her forehead in frustration. "If I hadn't found you in time and gotten you medical help... God knows what might've happened."
"I'm sorry," I murmured, reaching out to grasp her hand. "I didn't mean to scare you. I just..." I stopped, the memory of the wolf's attack flashing through my mind. I shuddered, the fear still raw. "I promise I won't go back into the woods."
Her eyes widened. "You were in the woods?" Her tone sharpened. "How many times have I told you it's too dangerous? Anything could've happened!"
"I know, Auntie. I'm fine now. I won't go back there," I whispered, hoping to reassure her.
Evelyn softened, yet her gaze remained skeptical. "Are you sure you're alright, Sophia? You seem... tense."
I forced a weak smile, nodding. "Just tired. Could you get me some water?"
She glanced at me, then sighed, heading to the kitchen. As soon as she was gone, I pulled down the collar of my shirt to check my shoulder. My breath caught. There, etched in my skin, were the raw, unmistakable marks of teeth. I could feel the throbbing pain as if it were fresh.
Suddenly, a wave of agony surged through me. My body twisted and burned from within. A small yelp escaped my lips, muffled by my hands as the pain subsided as quickly as it came. Panic simmered beneath my skin. "What's happening to me?" I muttered, my voice shaking.
Before I could collect my thoughts, a loud bang echoed from outside. I froze, heart hammering. Who was out there? The door to my room flew open, and Evelyn burst in, fear and determination hardening her expression. She moved to the closet, pulling out a gun.
"Stay here, Sophia," she ordered, her voice firm.
"Are we under attack?" I whispered, dread creeping into my voice.
Evelyn's hand trembled as she loaded the gun. "Yes, and I suspect it's connected to what happened in the woods. Somehow, they've discovered we live here, and they're coming for us. Stay put and don't come out, no matter what."
Before I could protest, she stormed out, her footsteps fading into the night. I peeked through the door, watching as she took cover behind the cabin. Just then, the front door burst open, and two wolves lunged inside. Evelyn fired, hitting one; it crumpled to the ground. The other wolf snarled and pounced at her, but she dodged just in time.
A third wolf blindsided her, knocking her down, her gun sliding across the floor. Evelyn struggled, but the beast pinned her, snapping its jaws around her neck. Blood splattered across the floor.
"No! No!" I screamed, clapping my hands over my mouth, but my cry was loud enough. The wolves turned, their lethal eyes zeroing in on me.
I bolted toward the window, pushing it open and diving out. I hit the ground running, ignoring the sting of my wounds, but fear clouded every step. Evelyn's lifeless face haunted my mind, her blood staining the memory.
A root caught my foot, and I crashed to the ground. Pain flared as I tried to push myself up, but the same agonizing cracking surged through my bones, worse than before. I screamed as my body twisted and contorted. My hands grew into paws; my skin gave way to fur. In mere seconds, I realized... I wasn't Sophia anymore. I was something else entirely.
A wolf.
"Hello, Sophia," a voice resonated in my mind, clear and foreign.
My thoughts spiraled. "Who are you? What are you doing in my head?"
"I'm Amra, your wolf," the voice replied, calm yet undeniable. I looked down, horror gripping me as I took in the sight of my paws. This can't be real. I had become the one thing I despised-the creature that had taken everything from me. Images of the wolves, the same beasts that slaughtered my family, flickered through my mind, and a surge of anger swelled within me.
"You're supposed to help me track others of our kind, right?" I demanded, voice trembling with fury.
"You don't need to yell," she replied with a mental scoff. "We're connected; I can hear you just fine. And yes, there's a pack not far from here, but they'll be guarded."
"Then get me there," I ordered.
Amra groaned in my head but obeyed, muscles coiling as we sprinted through the forest, faster than I had ever run. The ground blurred beneath us, rage burning brighter with every stride. I would make them pay for everything they'd taken from me. This weak girl was done running.
Chapter Two:
Into the Wolf's Den
The pack borders loomed before us, with eight guards pacing their posts like shadows against the dense trees. I could feel Amra's heartbeat pounding in my chest, fierce and unrelenting. These guards weren't amateurs-they moved with sharp, calculated precision, alert for any sign of movement. They were ready to defend.
"Think you can sprint past them?" I asked her, though I already sensed her answer in the stubborn set of her mind.
With a deep breath, she launched forward, her body a blur of speed and focus. She slipped between two guards, blending into the night, her movements fluid and silent. But then, a guard caught sight of her just as she darted past.
"Intruder!" The shout cut through the stillness, sending a jolt of alarm down my spine.
The other guards snapped into action, their footsteps heavy and relentless as they chased her. But Amra pushed herself harder, her breath coming fast, dodging left, then right, her entire being focused on outpacing the pursuit. The forest was a maze of obstacles-branches, roots, uneven ground-but she moved like she was born to the shadows.
"Run, Amra, run!" I urged, my own fear and adrenaline spurring her on.
Then it happened-a shadow lunged from the trees, barreling into her side with a force that sent her hurtling backward. She crashed into a tree, a sharp pain radiating through her body as she crumpled to the ground, gasping. The impact had rattled her, her senses spinning as she tried to regain her bearings.
I felt the pain as keenly as she did, the weakness creeping through her limbs as she struggled to stand. But there wasn't time to rest. Another wolf stood over her, eyes glinting with something dark, something primal. He prowled closer, his gaze intent, his lips peeling back in a silent snarl.
"Amra, Get up!...get up or we are screwed!" I pushed through, my urgency slicing through her haze of pain.
With a strained breath, she tried to rise, but her body was trembling, exhausted. Just then, the wolf shifted, his powerful form melting away into a tall, imposing figure of a man.
The pain surged through her, sharp and unrelenting, and I felt her slipping, her control loosening. She shifted back to her human form, her wolf energy drained, and in that moment, I felt myself pulling forward, taking over as she surrendered.
The man didn't seem surprised. His gaze flicked to me as I took a shaky breath, trying to steady myself, feeling the sting of Amra's injuries ripple through every inch of my body. He noticed, his mouth quirking with a faint glimmer of amusement. His face was unreadable, his expression cold as he assessed her, then tossed a cloak toward her.
"Put it on," he ordered, his voice steady.
I picked it up, wrapping the cloak around myself.
"I'll walk on my own," I told him, forcing my voice to stay steady. "I won't try to run."
For a moment, he seemed to consider, then he nodded, watching me with a wary gaze. I took a slow step forward, feeling the ache in my muscles, but my determination burned even brighter. With every step, I promised myself I wouldn't falter. Not now.
We moved through the winding corridors of the pack's stronghold, the walls pressing in on me, the scent of wolves thick in the air. Finally, we entered a grand chamber, dimly lit, filled with the faint hum of power.
At the far end of the room, he was waiting-the Alpha.
I recognized him instantly, the memories flashing through me like shards of glass. Amra's pain was mine, the searing hatred surging up from deep within, mingling with every ounce of anger I felt. This was the one who had taken everything from her-who had torn her family apart.
I kept my gaze on him, letting the fire in my eyes speak for itself, and I saw him smile, his satisfaction evident, as if he had been waiting for this moment as much as I had. My hands curled into fists beneath the cloak, nails digging into my palms as I forced myself to stay still, to let the rage simmer rather than explode.
"You've come a long way," he said, his tone as smug as his expression.
My whole body was taut, every muscle tense, the need to lash out nearly consuming me. I felt Amra's consciousness surge within me, a burst of fury and desperation, filling me with a strength I hadn't expected. But then something strange, something impossible, stirred deep within, a bond snapping into place that made my heartbeat stutter, my pulse race.
It was like a current, an invisible pull, binding me to him, refusing to let go. A single word echoed in my mind, unbidden, raw, and powerful, filling me with a longing I couldn't understand, couldn't control.
"Mate."
Chapter Three:
Bound to the Enemy
The walls of Kane's chambers felt suffocating. Stone pressed in on me from every side, the air thick with his presence. I could feel the pull of the bond-the way my body betrayed me with its instinctual response to him-but I would not give in. Not to him. Not to the monster who had ruined everything.
Kane's eyes locked onto mine, cold and calculating, as if he could already taste my hatred. He didn't even try to hide the twisted amusement in his gaze. It was like a game to him. A sick one. The Alpha who had taken everything from me, now playing with the idea of claiming me, as though it was his right.
"You can't fight this, Sophia," he said, his voice like ice. "I feel it. You feel it too."
I refused to let my emotions get the better of me, but my fists clenched, and I could feel the anger boil up inside me. "I don't give a damn about your bond, Kane," I spat, stepping closer. "I don't want anything from you. Nothing at all. You can keep your claim. You'll never have me."
A dark eyebrow arched in amusement, the corner of his lips twitching into a barely-there smirk. "Such fire. It's what makes this interesting, don't you think?"
The words came out of him so easily, like he was playing with me. And I hated it. Every word, every breath he took, made my skin crawl. My body was screaming to escape, but I stood my ground, pushing back against every ounce of that damn bond.
"I'm not some toy you can control," I growled, voice low and filled with venom. "You think you can trap me here? I'll tear your damn pack apart brick by brick if it means I get out."
His smirk deepened, eyes narrowing, as if he found my words amusing rather than threatening. "You're in my territory now, Sophia. You'll do things my way, or not at all."
I felt a searing anger ripple through me, but I refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing me falter. I stood taller, my chin raised in defiance, the rage in my chest thick and palpable.
"I'd rather die than give you what you want," I hissed, my voice dripping with contempt.
For a moment, there was nothing but the tension between us, a heavy, suffocating silence. And then, without breaking eye contact, he spoke in that dangerous, soft voice of his. "We'll see about that."
I wanted to scream. I wanted to tear him apart right here and now, but I stayed still. Because if I showed him even a fraction of how much I hated him, I'd only lose. And I wasn't about to give him that power.
"You'll regret this," I said, barely above a whisper, but the threat in my tone was clear as I was dragged away, from his chambers.
They dragged me several doors away from the Alpha chambers and suddenly stopped at a door. One of the gaurds pulled it open and I was flung in, and then I heard their retreating footsteps, until everywhere went dead silent.
I squatted up staring at the room I got flung into, I was expecting a cage, maid quarters but this, this was out of this world. Fully furnished with expensive product, dressed expensively, just as if it was a queens room. But why was I brought here?
My instinct clicked in and i quickly slammed the door shut, locking it up with it lock. I let out a deep sigh, dropping to the floor.
If he thinks he had claim me, I'd never, ever, let him. I hate him, I hate his existence, I'll end him, make him pay for everything and I'll make him crave death. But for now, I need to retreat and come back with a better plan, a plan no one can utter, this pack's downfall.
By nightfall, I'd leave thus god forsaken pack and be back ready.
"Stay put and do not come outside" Aunt's words rang in my head. My hands wrapped around my legs, curling up and I felt my heart growing heavy, and then I let everything out, crying as though I was a little pub.
------
I slipped out of the room, my breath shallow as I pressed myself against the walls, my heart pounding in my chest, the night was my only chance and I won't let it slip off.
I moved through the corridors like a ghost, the only sound the rush of my footsteps, quick and light. The moment I reached the exit, I felt the bitter sting of the mate bond again, like a heavy hand on my chest, pulling me back, reminding me that I couldn't truly escape. I bit down my lip hard, refusing to let it stop me. I ran.
My feet barely touched the ground as I sprinted through the forest, my heart racing with each step. Every instinct told me to keep running, to leave behind the man who had torn my life apart. But as I reached the edge of the pack's borders, the unmistakable sound of paws hitting the ground cut through the night air.
A wolf. Kane's wolf.
Before I could react, I was tackled from the side, the force slamming me into the ground with bone-crushing force. Pain shot through my body, and I gasped, struggling against the weight on top of me. The wolf growled, its teeth bared, but I refused to surrender. I twisted, kicking, clawing at the wolf's muzzle, until with a final, savage growl, it released me.
I didn't have time to breathe. I pushed myself up, my legs shaking from the impact, but I had no choice but to keep running. The wolf's pursuit was relentless. It was too fast, too strong. I could feel it gaining on me, its breath hot against my neck, and then-darkness.
----
I woke in a haze, my body throbbing with pain. I sprawled up recognizing where I was, and then my mind was suddenly consumed with rage. I didn't know how I'd ended up back in Kane's chambers. My body felt weak, my limbs sluggish, but my mind was clear, focused. I refused to let him break me.
He was standing by the door, watching me, his expression unreadable. But I saw the flicker of something dangerous in his eyes-something almost... satisfied.
"You're stubborn, Sophia," Kane said, his voice quiet, almost admiring. "I'll give you that."
I pushed myself into a sitting position, ignoring the weakness in my limbs. "I'll never belong to you."
His gaze softened for a moment, but it quickly hardened. "You will," he said. "In time, you'll see."
I gritted my teeth, fighting the bond that tried to weave its way through me. "Not if I can help it."
"You'll be mine, Sophia," he replied, a challenge in his voice. "Whether you want it or not."
Kane took a slow, measured step toward me, his voice softer, but no less intense. "Stay here," he said, "and I promise you'll be safe. Run, and I'll have no choice but to hunt you down again."
I crossed my arms, glaring at him. "And if I refuse?"
He gave a slight shrug, the barest flicker of a smile. "Then I suppose I'll have to remind you why no one defies me."
I could feel my heart racing, my pulse pounding in my ears. Every instinct screamed at me to hate him, to fight him, to never give him the satisfaction of bending to his will. But I could feel the truth of his words like an iron chain around my neck.
Reluctantly, I nodded. "Fine. I'll stay. But only until I find a way to escape."
His lips curved into a smirk, and he reached out, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear. The touch sent a jolt through me, infuriating and electric.
"Then I look forward to the chase," he murmured.
As he turned to leave, I felt a simmering resolve harden within me. If he thought I was going to fall in line, he was sorely mistaken. I'd find a way to break free-no matter what it took. And if I couldn't escape, then I'd find another way to make him pay.
