She was panting as she ran down the bushy tracks, her clothes torn, her breath labored by pants, and her body filled with sweat, her feet ached from the stones and thorns that pricked and brushed her feet but she didn't stop. She couldn't stop right now. They were right behind her. She wasn't yet safe, she had just escaped from captivity and she was being hunted down by men with arms and dogs alike.
But she was reaching her limit, she couldn't run anymore as her legs gave out and she fell rolling down the road when she saw two men jump out and grabbed her right.
"Nooo!" She screamed loud as she woke up panting for breath. Just then the door opened as her mum and a few bodyguards ran into the room alarmed. The bodyguards quickly did a quick survey and saw that no intruder had entered so it wasn't an external case. Her mother on the other hand sat beside her holding her as she held her tight and patted her shoulders, trying to confront her.
"Calm down, Myra. It is just a nightmare okay? I am right here. Everything will be alright. You were rescued remember?" She said shushing her daughter as she felt her trembling in her arms and she shook her head.
This wasn't the first time that Myra had gotten kidnapped because her mother was a famous businesswoman and her stepfather was a mafia. It had left her jumpy and scared which ended up in having many nightmares but no matter the therapy she got, she never truly healed.
"It was so real mother. I thought they got me. I can still smell their stench on my face, and the evil smile they gave me. Mother, it was so horrible. I was so scared. If you and the policemen hadn't gotten there, they would have killed me. I was weak and helpless and they taunted me with it. I am just a nobody like they said." Myra said sobbing her eyes out as her mother Lady Janet glanced at the bodyguards who were still immobile waiting for her command. She jerked her head towards the door and they quickly understood that they weren't needed so they nodded their heads and left the room leaving mother and daughter behind.
As soon as the door closed, Janet pulled her away from her body and looked at her face.
"Listen to me, dear. You are a nobody. You are my daughter. And you are precious to me. You know that I will do anything for you. So never think you are the problem. It is I that should be apologizing. Because of mine and your stepfather's business, you have always been on constant watch by bad people who want to use you and get to us." She said as Myra cleaned her face and kept quiet.
"I believe I know what to do now. Since things have come to this and I can't always guarantee your safety. I have decided to get you a permanent bodyguard. One that will be with you 24/7 anywhere you go." She said finally dropping the bomb Myra pushed her mother away gently and stood up walking towards the makeup table as she shook her head.
"No, I don't agree with this. You know how I feel about bodyguards. I do not need one, mum please do not get one for me. I would rather learn self-defense. I will take better care of myself that way. " She said trying to reason with her mother but her mind was made up.
"You know why I want you to get a bodyguard. I would not be at peace if I do not get you one. I worry too much about you, you are my only child. Please I know your last bodyguard did some things to you when you are still a child but that was over 20 years ago and things are different now. I will get one that won't do such nasty things to you. You can count on me." She said as Myra sighed.
She didn't want one get her mother was insisting that she needed one. Usually, she would back down but considering how the house was always on tension, she knees that there was more to it than what her mother was telling her.
"Mum is anything going on between you and stepfather? What is happening?" She said instead as her mum raked a hand through her head and sighed,
"I guess you have noticed that your stepfather and I haven't been seeing eye to eye lately. Anyways I will tell you....there is no need to keep it a secret from you. You need to know how grave this is. Your stepfather and I have been planning on divorcing. We are no longer happy with each other since we always argue and can't seem to get to a compromise. So I fear people would use this to get to me now they find out that the family is coming apart, all the more reason you need a bodyguard."
Myra looked at her mother and sighed. She knew her mother was scared that was why she was behaving like this but she didn't also want one. There was no need to argue with her anymore. Besides, it was night and they were both tensed. It would be a lot better if they spoke again about this issue on another day.
"Mother, could we leave this topic to another day? It is late and I don't want to keep you up. I want to bathe again and try sleeping. That would help me this time around." She said with a smile as her mother nodded her head.
"Okay princess, you are right. It is late. Try and get some sleep, I will be in my room if you need me. Good night Myra." she said as she headed for the door.
"Good night mother," Myra answered as the door closed behind her and she exhaled.
Myra woke up the next morning feeling uneventful. She stretched herself and got out of bed ready to face the next morning. She quickly got prepared with the help of her maids who brought out what she wanted to wear.
After she was satisfied with the clothes she had on, she made her way downstairs to eat breakfast and that was when she saw that her food had already been served in the huge dining but there was no one present.
Sitting down she snapped her fingers and a maid came hurrying to her side.
"Where is my mother?" Myra asked as the maid bowed and replied,
"She went out quite early today. She mentioned that she won't be back on time, but would try to make it for late lunch." Myra nodded her head hearing this and shooed her away before she focused on eating.
She wanted to talk to her about the bodyguard issue that she won't need one but she shrugged it off. No need to hasten her decision, when she comes back, she will let her know. With this in mind, she sat down and ate breakfast.
After eating she was feeling a bit bored and was scrolling through her phone when her phone started ringing.
She saw that it was her best friend Anna who was calling her so she quickly picked it up with a smile.
"Hey bestie, how was your night?" Anna's cheery voice breezed through the receiver making Myra happy as she subconsciously smiled and said,
"Uneventful. Yours?"
"Mine was quite interesting...I met someone and I would love to talk about him with you, are you busy? Can we meet up?" She asked as Myra thought about it. She was indeed bored and there was no need to wait around in the huge mansion alone. Besides she can kill tome so she replied,
"Sure, where do you want us to meet? Or should I come to your house?"Myra added with a smirk as Anna on the other hand quickly shook her head and said,
" No, let's meet at the usual cafe. I am currently not at home."
"Oh okay, dear. I will see you in an hour." Myra smiled and said,
"Alright. I will be waiting." Anna ended the call as Myra dropped the phone on the table and stood up to prepare again. The cloth she had on wasn't appropriate for an outing. She was happy at the very least that she was going to go out and spend some time with her best friend.
She was going to bring this bodyguard issue up and hear her opinions. It wasn't bad to get a second opinion.
When she came downstairs again fully dressed with a matching purse she took her phone and dropped it in her bag before making her way to the courtyard.
And as usual, the guards all stood up waiting to escort her as Myra shook her head,
"But mistress, we have to protect you at all times." The head guard tried to say as Myra shook her head and said,
"I am just going for a coffee drink with a friend. There is no need for you lot to escort me. I will be fine. Okay? You coming with me will just attract attention towards me. I am sure that I can pull this off alone."
"But the big madam said....."
"Leave my mother out of this. I am going alone and that's final." She said in a harsh tone this time around as the men nodded their heads and kept quiet.
Myra got into her car and drove out of the mansion and made her way to the cafe.
FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER
Myra saw her best friend waiting for her at their usual spot by the window and she smiles and walked towards her. Anna saw her coming and stood up hugging and pecking her as they both sat down and Anna gave her the coffee that she had already ordered for her.
"Thanks, dear." She said as she sipped from it. Anna then went ahead to tell her about the new guy while Myra was listening with prompt attention asking her questions when needed.
After their third cup of refill, Myra frowned as she glanced outside and saw that the same man who has been staring at her for the past hour was still there trying to make himself hidden but Myra knew the activities of a stalker when she saw one. She told Anna about what was happening and told her not to freak out and give the man away so that they know she is being stalked.
"What are you going to do? Where are your bodyguards? Is he outside?" Anna said as Myra brought out her phone and shook her head.
" No, but I am about to get one now. My mum wanted to get me one last night but I refused. I guess I will take one then." She said as she dialed her mother's number and placed the phone on her ears waiting for her to pick up.
"Hello Myra, how are you doing? "
"I am fine, mother. I will just cut to the chase. About the bodyguard, I will accept one, but I have terms and conditions for this." She said as her mum quickly replied,
"Sure, tell me what the conditions are. I will fulfill it and every one of it." She said as Myra answered,
"I will be the one to be paying for his services. As you know I have a private business and I am very independent so I will pay for it."
"Okay dear, if that is what you want, then there is no problem. You are getting a bodyguard and that is all I need. Thank you for thinking this through. I know that you aren't happy about it but thank you. "
"It's okay mother. Between us, there is no need for thanks and sorry. I am happy to get one to keep you happy. I will be hanging up now. I am with Anna." She added as her mother nodded her head although she could not see her and ended the call.
Felix Marshall was having a terrible morning as he just returned from the hospital where his mother had been admitted and the doctor's last words floated toward him.
"We need the sum of five million dollars to start the treatment or I am afraid that your mother won't survive. She has at most two months before her condition worsens." Where on earth was he going to get such an amount of money in a short while when he was currently jobless and it was only him and his mother?
His dad was not in the picture since he left them hanging over when he was a kid and her mother was disowned by her own family so they didn't keep in contact with her. Felix was torn between the idea of getting a new job or robbing a bank because this was his only option left but Felix was a street fighter ever since he was small. He never went to school so he didn't have a degree.
No reputable company was going to hire him not with his looks and lack of a degree. He sighed as he placed his hands in his pockets trying to wage his options now.
He was still lost in thoughts trying to figure out which shark loan companies would be able to give him five million without asking for collateral property especially when he didn't have one.
His mother needed him right now, there was no way he was going to shrink off his responsibility. He just needed to work harder.
He brought his phone out of his pocket and dialed a number. Once it rang, he spoke,
"Can I speak to Mr. Black? It is important."
"Do you have an appointment with him?" The female voice said with no tone of sympathy in her voice.
Felix wanted to say the truth and say no but he also knew that the instant he said that, the lady would disconnect and his chances would reduce so he swallowed hard and said,
"Yes."
"Okay, I will connect you to his line now. Please hold." She said as Felix exhaled. He thought that she was going to ask for his name so that she could run it but she hadn't.
He waited as there was a click and someone, an older male with a deep baritone voice spoke,
"Who is this and how may I help you?"
"Good morning Mr. Black, it is I, Felix. I am a street fighter. We have met before. I want to ask you for a favor. My mother is in the hospital and I need the sum of five million dollars and you are the only one who can give me that money in a short while. I will do anything." He said as he waited for the older man to reply.
"Felix, I remember you now. I do not have any money to give you, you do not have collateral and I know that you are jobless at the moment. I know you can't pay me so why bother asking me in the first place? Let your mother die, it's probably God's will." He said as Felix clenched his fist angrily at the way he just discarded his mother's life like that as if it was worthless.
But he knew better than to argue with him. Mr. Black tends to make people he doesn't like disappear. And he didn't want that to happen to him. So he swallowed the insult.
"Thank you for your time, I appreciate it." He said as he ended the call. He decided to head back home when he saw a commotion.
Someone was walking into the road not paying attention and there was a car coming at full speed so Felix reacted before he could think it through as he narrowly pushed both him and the stranger out of the way avoiding an accident as the car came to a stop as everyone gathered.
Felix was wounded since it was he who took most of the impact with the ground but he still hovered around the stranger making sure that he was not hurt.
"Are you alright sir?" Felix said as the man groaned and opened his eyes, his vision getting steady as he said,
"You saved my life. How can I repay you for this?"
"You do not need to. Anyone else would have done it. Come up, let me help you." He said as he took the stranger's hand and pulled him up.
When people saw that they were fine, they quickly dispersed but the stranger still stayed and thanked him.
"My name is Blaq. What's yours?" He asked as Felix took his outstretched hand and replied,
"Felix Marshalls, a pleasure to meet you. "
"The pleasure is all mine. Like I said before I would be very happy to help you. Can we talk further? I would like to make you my bodyguard. If you are interested, you can meet me in my mansion, don't worry about the pay. It will be a good one, what do you say?"
Felix wanted to ignore it but he quickly remembered his mother who needed the money and this job was short of a miracle. at least he was going to get paid something to start the treatment and considering what the man had on, he knew that he was a man of elegance and wealth.
He nodded his head saying,
"If you think I am capable to act as your bodyguard, then who am I to turn down this invitation? I will accept it." He said as Blaq clasped his hand around his shoulders and smiled,
"Wonderful..this is good news. Here. Have this." He said giving him a written cheque and a card.
"My address is on this card and this is a cheque for 500 thousand. Buy yourself some suitable wears and come tomorrow by 9 am. I will talk more about the job then, my number is also on the card so you can call me if there is anything wrong." He said as Felix thanked him once more and waved as he left.
