215 YEARS BACK.

Seth Osiris stood facing Masika, the brightness of the sun glaring in the sky casting a warm glow on his delicate but hard granite features.

The distance Masika kept troubled him. Even as a monster_ he considered himself so he didn't think that he had changed much, he still felt the same way he did for her before he was turned into a cursed son of the night, so he didn't understand why her eyes held so much fear.

Her dark blue eyes sparkled in the sunlight, her fiery black hair sweeping over her face due to the windy weather. He'd always been fascinated with her eyes because they held so much in them and it was easy to let go of all of his hurt and pain when he was with her.

The amulet he wore sizzled but it was bearable. The physical pain he felt was more tolerable than the longing in his heart that yearned for her embrace and her acceptance. He felt he was in constant turmoil the longer the silence prevailed.

"Masika" he called and watched as she winced. It was as if his voice were slaps to her face. He took two steps, wanting to reach her as a normal human would, but he was right in front of her as soon as he moved.

Masika flinched as he reached to touch her and a single tear trailed down her smooth cheek as she stared at him in awe and trepidation.

Seth gazed at her, hoping she'd realize that he was still human and that she didn't need to be afraid of him.

He swiped the tears off her cheeks delicately, cautious not to bruise her with his newfound strength. He had drunk enough to quench his thirst and even the dazzling smell of her blood didn't tempt him to drink from her.

"It's me, Masika. Your prince. Your lover"

Masika shook her head and took a step back, her expression hardening. "You need to leave and never come back," she whispered harshly making his heart that had always seemed non-existent start beating in a turbulent frenzy.

His brows drew up in confusion but Masika continued bravely. "You're not human anymore Seth. You don't belong with the living because you've been cursed by the devil. You're a monster now, so it's better for you to just roam the night as the animals do. Don't worry about the kingdom, I'll make sure your family is worshipped and remembered as the gods they were, but you all have to leave and never come back," she said, her voice fierce and determined.

Seth's emotions were muddled in his head, he couldn't decide which to focus on. The thing about being turned was that it was difficult to feel anything other than anger and pain. The agony or anger did sometimes come together to become one, and when it did, it drove him to insanity. He could read the mind of his lover, all the evil she had planned in her mind for him, his family. He refused to believe them. He wanted to remember her as she was. Perfect, with no evil intentions.

"Why?" He whispered into the wind, quietly resisting the urge to kill, to hurt, to tear apart and mark the desert sand with blood. "Why betray me?"

Her eyes widened, and she took some steps back, almost stumbling on her silky blue gown.

He yanked her close, then kissed her, putting all the emotions he felt into it. He wanted her to remember, he needed her to relieve their love because that was the only thing that kept him sane. She was the only woman he loved. The only one who could take away the pain he felt.

Kissing her felt like tasting life. The heat of her mouth sent a fire burning through his skin, it heated his blood and made him feel almost human. His hands trailed her skin, memorizing every little detail about her. The scent of her arousal thickened in the air and he groaned his frustration of the kiss not being enough into her mouth.

Seth knew he could never hate her despite knowing for a fact that she planned to betray him. Their love was strong and nothing could ever sever it.

He was wrong, but he wished that he hadn't. A scorching burning pain spread across his chest as a sharp object pierced through his flesh.

Seth pulled back in agony, his jaw-dropping as he stared at the holy dagger square in his chest. He gaped at her, hoping to see or feel an ounce of remorse, but there was no emotion in her icy gaze.

He fell to the floor, the sand hot against his cheek as dark blood from the fatal wound coated the desert sand.

The man hiding in the shadows came out, an eerie smile on his lips. Seth had been aware of him from the start. He hadn't thought he mattered.

"Excellent job, my child," the man said appreciatively, eyes twitching as he watched Seth's dying form, before coming to stand over him with a grin stretched across his lips.

"I can finally rule with no opposition now Seth Osiris. Just like I caused your mother's death, I've executed you too. Your father and your sister will be next. Hell will be happy to have you back in the land of the dead" he declared, laughing heartily. His eyes pitch black and devoid of emotion. "You'll do well to remain in the land of the dead because I won't hesitate to kill you if you show up in front of me again"

He turned to leave, motioning for Masika to follow.

Masika hesitated, stared at him for a second more, then muttered words he could not hear as blood poured out of his mouth.

They were gone after a while, both of them leaving him to die.

Seth writhed in the agony of betrayal and anger, the searing pain making his head spin.

With the last strength he could muster, he pulled out the dagger, a million stars exploding in the back of his eyes as everywhere went cold.

He felt the darkness closing in, felt his dead heart burning in his chest, causing him to scream in hopeless agony. Masika had betrayed him. She'd dashed his heart into pieces without a backward glance and he wasn't going to let it go. The anger sizzled in his chest, increasing until it spilled over the edges of his being.

If he survived. They would all pay.

Chapter 2 Two.

The Present.

DAWN ATKINS POV.

Stepping into the warm cozy restaurant, I was surprised to see that some of the workers were already busy at work.

On normal days, I was always the first to arrive but I guess I'd overslept today, which was all due to my nightmare's return. I hadn't been able to get a wink of sleep through the night, but only got a few shut eyes which lasted all through my alarm noises.

The guys gave me the most dazzling smile before the leering, seductive glances kicked in. It was going to be another painstaking day of saying no to numerous romantic proposals. It made me sick, but I'd always had to deal with it all my life, so it was nothing new.

Avoiding their gazes, I walked toward the counter and threw on my apron.

The attention I got every time I walked into a room didn't bother me as much as it did before.

From a young age, I'd always been different. I was the beautiful girl with an innocent soulful face. A face that made people either love me or want to destroy me, or go to the extreme to do evil despicable things to me.

In school, it made me the center of everyone's attention. All the girls choose to hate me. You couldn't be beautiful, yet brilliant they said. I was both and because of that, I bore their resentment like a weight hanging around my neck. The bullying didn't stop until my mother pulled me out and had me homeschooled instead.

It got worse as I grew up. I'd get harassed every time I went out of the house and sometimes the cops had to get involved.

That was when the nightmares started, and they were always dark and vicious. I struggled with depression until I felt like I was losing my mind. I also couldn't get a job to keep busy because they always wanted something from me in return, even though I was qualified for the position.

It was a miracle I hadn't ever gotten kidnapped considering the level of depravity of some of the men and women that had been obsessed with me.

I had finally decided to leave the big city and move to a small town when It felt like everyone was out to hurt me. My mom agreed because she had been so sad, clinging to the edge every day, and worrying over me.

She had looked almost glad to see me go but I was keen to leave too.

This town was better. The citizens had morals and tho there was some occasional harassment, I found I could handle myself well here. I started taking defense classes to fight off men who didn't understand the meaning of the word NO.

The compliment and curiosity of People never stopped and they always had something to say to me or about me.

The people of this town were specifically enthralled with my eyes and were always gossiping about them, they also found occasion to talk to me and compliment them but I didn't see anything special in them except that were dark blue that changed shades according to lightning and color rays. My features were pretty delicate, and I guessed that was why people thought they could take advantage of me.

The rasp of Mason's hand against the counter broke through my thought and made me flinch. Choosing to Ignore his presence, I busied myself cleaning the same spot over and again.

I didn't like Mason because he had a shitty attitude, and even though he was very good-looking, worked out, had a perfect body, and knew how to charm everyone's pants off_ except me, I tried to put a distance between us. He also had a nasty temper which was a red flag for me.

Well, I and Men naturally did not get along. They were always trying to take advantage of me. My father left when I was young, and my Mom never had anything good to say about him so I became defensive and cautious of them. Wary of them would suit the term better.

Mason tapped the counter again and I forced myself to acknowledge him with a raised eyebrow. He leaned closer, his grey eyes probing into mine. A warm smile across his glossed-up lips.

"So how about after closing hours, you finally accept my offer and I take you out to show you a good time" he offered, proceeding to add what he considered a sexy wink.

It was not sexy, at all. I dropped the wipers with a sigh then forced a thin smile onto my lips which I made sure he saw was fake as daylight.

"I'd rather not. I have something planned for tonight"

His face screwed up. They all knew I was a loner, who didn't go anywhere but my home so he knew I was lying. His hands drummed harder on the counter as he leaned even closer.

"Come on I've been asking you out for two years now, are you seriously going to keep doing this" he rasped, his eyes probing.

"I think two years is a pretty long time for you to get that I don't like you that way, Mason. I don't want to go out with you", I said, staring him straight in the eyes. I needed him to know I was serious.

His gaze hardened, his expression becoming darker but I'd already seen it coming. They were all the same in the end, they resulted to being aggressive when their subtlety didn't work.

"You don't need to be a bitch about it, you're not all that you know" he sneered with venom. "You think you're some diva huh?"

"It's too early for your bullshit Mason. I came to work, and I think you should do the same". I suggested with a firm nod in the direction of his empty workspace.

He cursed, then his hands reach out to grab me

My heart flew into my throat. "Don't..."

"Yes Mason, stop pestering the best hard-working employee of the month" Gabriel's thick accent cut across the air and Mason froze. He whipped around like a deer caught in the headlights.

It served him right. Most guys have given up trying to pursue me but not Mason because he got all the girls. I do not see him being awarded any trophies for the trouble tho.

"Boss" he laughed. "I was just catching up with beautiful Belle here." He turned to face me, smiling like we were best buddies. "Isn't that right, Dawn?"

Gabriel interrupted before I could answer. "She doesn't like your catching up, so get back to work, or there'll be hell to pay," he warned in his usual authoritative manner.

Mason nodded, his shoulders sagging like an errant child that had been scolded as he walked back to his post.

"Sorry about Mason. I'll talk to him" he said reassuringly. I nodded. Not that talking ever worked with Mason.

"Thanks, boss." He waved my thanks off, then strode to the door, turning the sign for open. I couldn't believe that I had not noticed it when I came in. I made to apologize but he just smiled and walked into his office.

He was the best boss I'd ever worked for, he was also the first to hire me without any ulterior motive.

I got back to work, adjusting the expresso machine and rearranging the cakes to make them look attractive. I had a knack for things like that. The early morning customers soon arrived. I took their orders and then served them. I made sure they had happy smiles on their faces before going back to my post.

I didn't mind doing Gracie's job. She was not an early riser or a stickler to set time. Mr. Gabriel was very tolerant of her bad behavior and I had a strong gut feeling that he was in love with her. I do feel sorry for him because Gracie was not one to make commitments. She lived freely and was always trying new things. New things Included being with new guys. I wish I could be that free.

The door chimed and Gracie walked in. Talk of the devil.

"I am so fucking hungover," she said with a grimace as she approached me. She certainly looked the part. Her red hair was messy in a kind of I just had morning sex sought-of way, her eyes also had dark circles. I guess she didn't sleep much.

"Please tell me the boss is not in"

"The boss is not in" I deadpan and she made a face.

"What? You're the one who came late, also, don't be too loud, Mr. I want "silence" all the time, is here" I whispered and tilted my chin in the direction of a secluded booth. Her eyes widen a fraction before she made a zipping motion over her lips.

"What happened to you last night," I asked as she put on her apron, and got busy beside me.

"Got stupid drunk and took a hottie home. My very expensive necklace was missing this morning. That fucktard!"

I grinned, already used to her wild stories. "Any regrets then?" I hit my shoulder against hers and she turned to face me

"Regrets? Hmmm, let me see. My brain almost got fucked out of my head last night. The guy was a fucking stallion. I was in seventh heaven all through the night, so no regrets" she said spacing out a little before getting serious. "Too bad he was a thief, I mean I would have paid him if he'd just asked"

I chuckled, hitting my knuckles against her head. She winced before glaring at me.

"You're unbelievable. You have to be more careful ok, you don't want to pick up a serial killer, do you?"

She looked thoughtful for a second, then grinned. "Since I do the picking up, I don't think that would be happening anytime soon. You do need to get laid tho" she changed the topic smoothly. I rolled my eyes to the seventh heaven that she mentioned a while back. Here we go again.

"For reals, if you got laid, you wouldn't be so worried about my sex life. Mason and thousands of other guys are over you, you could be getting it every freaking night but you'd rather die a maid" she faked a cry, her lips trembling as she gazed at me with puppy eyes. "When will you be a free maid?"

"At least I'm the pretty maid that put smiles on people's faces. Besides I don't like Men". I said to throw her off. She folded her arm, glaring.

"I offered to hook you up with a woman and you also refused. How do you even sleep at night?".

"Very peacefully".

"Wow, I might be unbelievable but you're completely hopeless. You need more night troubles trust me"

I laughed at her suggestions and then went back to work. We chatted now and then. She shared her escapades while I listened, wishing my life wasn't so complicated.

Midday was the busiest but It was more manageable at night. I was the last to leave most time after Gabriel. Gracie also closed at the same time as me but then it was straight to the club or a party event. She never invited anyone along since she preferred her company.

I didn't leave far from the cafe and Cabs were always available by 8:00 pm. I locked up, then took a cab home. That was my daily routine.

My apartment was small and I surrounded myself with dark art, and wooden items. I even had the walls painted black. I wanted to recreate a dark beautiful forest when I got the house. It worked. Specks of dark greens decorated the walls, my couch, and my bed. It was my safe little haven. My mom called twice a week to check on me. She made sure to visit every month. She missed me a lot but we both agreed that Syracuse was the best place for me to stay and heal.

After work, I spent the night indulging myself in reading romance novels, listening to songs, and freelancing online to make more money so I could go back home to start a business on my own.

Lying in bed, I stared at the ceiling, trying to fall asleep but It was hard especially when I knew the nightmare would come back to hunt me.

It was always so vivid that I felt like I would die if I couldn't force myself to wake up. Taking sleeping pills made it worse. No one knew about my problems because I never shared much and Gracie, free-spirited as she was had her demons to fight.

As my eyes closed slowly, my body shivered in anticipation. Hours pass by and I drifted off. It doesn't take long for me to feel it.

I couldn't move and it felt like I was being held down with strong sturdy chains. My eyes snapped wide open, and I couldn't close them even as I saw the horror of my nightmare. It was hideous, rotting away, skin shedding to the floor as it moved but it still looked human. It was crawling towards me. Tears rolled down my cheeks. I was screaming but it felt like whispers in the air. My throat ached. Its cold hands touch my skin and I shuddered in revulsion. Suddenly it was face to face with me, then it pressed its long talons into my neck. I screamed louder as worms filled my throat.

I thrashed about, clutching at my throat, gagging, and trying to spit them out. The pressure lifted and I coughed loudly, tears pouring down my face as I frantically glanced around. I was alone. The clock read three o'clock in the morning.

I lay back sobbing softly as the terrifying image filled my mind. I didn't want to close my eyes, so I stayed awake until the sun rose on the horizon.

I tried to stand, only to end up stubbing my toe against the table stand. The skin got peeled off and I gasped as warm blood spurted out.

Something was going to go wrong today. It was very rare for me to get an injury.

It was a jinx whenever it occurred.

Bad stuff always happened after that.

Chapter 3 Three

SETH OSIRIS POV

The smell of warm blood permeated the air as I stepped into the dimly lighted pub. I got a kick out of the lighting and the warm cozy feel of the room as I scanned the whole length and breadth of it.

I preferred to hunt when it was dark but today I was feeling too thirsty to wait for the night. It was still early in the morning and the sun had not yet risen.

The scent of blood had led me here and I wasn't going to leave until I satisfied my cravings. It would have been spectacular if it was darker, or deeper in the woods where no eyes could see.

I choose the night to hunt for my prey and it was all because I loved the way the breeze blew over me and my victim, it fed my sadistic nature when they struggled, thinking that they could ever get away. I've killed a few in the heat of the moment but I've learned to be more controlled as I aged.

Right now my gaze was focused on a guy seated at the end of the booth quietly drinking. He was the one giving off the scent. He had beautiful grey eyes, long hair, and delicate features. Most times I preferred my victims struggling but other times I wanted them pliant and submissive. When I was in the latter mood I always ended up killing those who struggled too much. Some prey were strong-willed, they fought until the end even though they knew they could never win. It was fun.

Eyes were on me from all sides as I approached the pretty one. The lust in the room became suffocating and it was all directed toward me.

The guy sensed me approaching and suddenly looked up as I got closer.

It was as expected. I had a sought of pull that made people stop and stare. A beautiful blush crept up his neck and then deepened when I held his stare. His heartbeat increased making his blood pump harder. His scent filled my nose as I subtly inhale.

He got fidgety the closer I got and his pheromones mixing with the blood pulsing in his veins made my fang ache.

"Pretty one" I called staring intently at him before taking hold of his jaw gently. He gasped audibly and I could hear all the sexual thoughts that ran through his head. He was also questioning his sexuality and that was interfering with his total submission to the power of my seduction. I smiled, enthralling him further before I leaned toward him until our faces were an inch apart.

"I don't care if you're a gay or not, pretty one. I'll be feeding on you tonight, and let's be honest, everyone is a little gay. You can just let it take over now" I assured in my husky voice.

"Umm..I..." He stammered and I gave him a charming smile that had him almost swooning judging by the rate at which his heart had sped up. I leaned close to his ear taking a gentle whiff. My fangs elongated a little.

"Follow me" I ordered and he nodded, already under my spell. I took his hands and he obeyed without question.

We both entered the bathroom and the door clicked close behind us and then I was kissing him. He was surprised but this was part of his fantasy coming through, so he surrendered, melting against me. I loved that from a prey. I held him delicately, careful not to damage him too much, I might come back for more of such alluring blood. He got bolder, and his hands roamed over my body, tracing muscles, his war with his sexuality forgotten.

I grabbed both of his hands and held them against the wall biting at his lips and drinking some of the blood that trickled down. He groaned, rubbing against me and I smirked. His heart was thrumming loudly and when I kissed down his neck, he struggled to free his hands. He must want to touch me.

I bite down a bit on his pale skin and his moans of pain and pleasure were heavenly. His eyes clenched shut as he gave in to the sensation building up in his body. My hand went over his mouth at the same time I sank my fangs into his warm pulsing vein.

Shocked and aroused, he screamed into my hand. His pain mixed with ecstasy. I was delirious at the feel of his blood slipping down my throat. It felt like a cool drink of ice-cold water after roaming through the desert for weeks on end.

I drank just enough and let him go. He fell to the floor looking very pale and I wondered if I'd miscalculated and taken too much. Listening to his heartbeat, I knew he was going to be alright.

I kneeled over him, caressing his hair. "I'll be back pretty one" I murmured into his ears. I pinched my fingers and two drops of blood fell on his neck. The bite mark disappeared.

I stroked his hair, a smile on my face. I was in a good mood because his blood had been sweeter than the last I had. "Forget about me and our encounter. You won't remember any of this, pretty one" I whispered in his ear then stood up. He would probably wake up with a bad headache. He won't be like me tho.

To turn a human into a vampire, it required us to drain the victim dry and when they were almost dead, we released venom from our fangs into them. The vampire venom going into their heart as they took their last breath made the change. I knew how to control my venom even when I drained humans. It was a skill only I had mastered.

I walked out of the pub, squinting at the red-orange flame in the sky. I hated the sun just like all the other vampires. It was irritating and could make me burn even when I wore the protection the sorcerers gave my father. It made me thirsty too.

"Still set in your ways I see" Persephone's voice boomed and I turned to face her, having already Sensed her in the vicinity.

"Well, I was thirsty and I needed a drink"

"At least you didn't kill him this time. Dad still believes you're a vegetarian, a pure breed".

"We'll let him keep thinking that way since I can't become the strongest If all I fed on were filthy cow blood" I gritted out in a sudden rage. Those blood made me mad. It was insane for me to quench my thirst with such an obscene substitute.

"What I need is the holy blood. I'll be all-powerful, and indestructible. Alaric Massimo will tremble in fear when he hears that I'm coming for him, and he will feel a neverending pain once I wipe him and his clan off the face of the earth. For good" my eyes glared red because of the rage I felt within.

Persephone approached me cautiously, her smile still in place as she patted my shoulder.

"Well you might be closer than you think but we just got here, don't leave a trail of blood brother" she warned.

"I clean up good"

"I've noticed. I like the last guy you drained. Can I have him?"

"Go find your meal" I snarled. She was trying to distract me from my rage and It was working. My eyes slowly returned to their normal grey with specs of silver.

"You're the best when it comes to finding the best blood and I got a whiff of his. It is delicious. Let me have it and I'll look into the future for you" she offered.

"You're willing to go this far?"

"Yes I am brother" her eyes changed to a dark red "You'll give him to me, wouldn't you?".

I flicked her head and her eyes changed back to their normal black.

"That only works on weak vampires and mere mortals"

"You're all-powerful, aren't you?"

"I only indulge you Persephone. You can have him" I relinquished and Persephone grinned.

"Thank you, big brother" she gushed, flipped her cloak, and was gone. She could never stand the sun. I also noticed it was starting to get hotter.

The blast of sudden air against my skin was a welcome distraction from the burning sun, but with it came a powerful scent that almost knocked me off my feet in lust, thirst, desire, and possession. I could almost taste the power of it on my tongue as the scent went down my throat. My eyes turned dark red as I searched desperately for the source.

I followed the scent and it got stronger, almost suffocating me. I had to calm down or I'd wreck everything in my path and could also damage the vessel which held such alluring blood. I had never felt so thirsty after a drink, so I tried to control the amount of the scent I inhaled.

A predator needed to be calm and calculative to get their prey, using tactical means that guaranteed no failures. Of course, we could also just go crazy and attack. The humans never stood a chance either way.

This blood was mine. No one was going to have it.

The scent was thickly wrapped around a beautifully decorated coffee shop. The designs were simple yet elegant. I could get coffee here if I was human.

I walked towards it and opened the door. A blast of the scent hit me with full force and I had to hold a breath and think other thoughts to distract the feverish pitch of hunger that racked through my skin. My fangs ached. I could distinctively pick out the heartbeat that pumped the blood. It was banging rapidly and loudly in my ears, driving me insane.

Eyes were on me as I approached the counter. The pheromones thickened in the air again but I could only focus on the pale girl with such dark enthralling hair. Her head was bent over the coffee maker. I stopped, my dead heart kicking against my ribs. The hair almost brought a clear image of wavy dark hair in the desert sun. The scar from her knife never did heal. I should have died but I didn't.

The girl beside her was staring blatantly at me, her hands frozen in the air with the cup she held.

Crazy thoughts went through her mind. It was odd that the girl had not looked up. Even if it was not my aura, the sudden silence was jarring.

She finally looked up and it was in slow motion. Her face was perfect and could light up any room she walked into, it was a face that was almost familiar. Her eyes made me see red tho. I'd killed a lot of victims with blue eyes. It triggered in me an animalistic urge to hurt. Her's were even exactly like Masika's. Deep blue like a turbulent yet still calm ocean. I hated her immediately even though I felt like sinking my fangs into her veins and drinking until she breathe her last.

I might. I would.
