Away From Bullies

It was a beautiful morning, the birds were chirping outside and the sun was about to come out of its hiding place. This was another school day and Adam was not ready for school.

He knew why as it was his regular problem in school. Adam happens to be one of the smallest boys in his class.

He was also constantly bullied by the bigger boys. This is the reason why he was not even ready to move an inch from his bed. m

"Adam" his mother called as she expected him to be getting ready. Adam did not reply to this call as he did not want to go to school.

"Adam" his mother called again as she opened the door of his room. "Don't you want to go to school today?"

"Not today mum" came his reply. His mother understood the reason why he did not want to go to school but he had to.

" I know that you are being constantly bullied at school". His mother paused taking a look at the frown on his face.

"Nevertheless, one day you will grow above this stage of being bullied by the older boys in your class". Adam knew that he could not resist his mother as this was what trespassed between them almost every day.

He stood up from his bed and went on to prepare for school. The school bus arrived shortly after he had finished his breakfast.

"Goodbye mum" Adam waved at his mum as the school bus drove away. Adam arrived at the school gate but did not want to enter it.

He saw the gate as some monster door waiting to lock him inside his hell once he entered into it. Trying to control himself, Adam moved slowly into the school compound.

He saw his best friend Theo also waiting at the school gate. "what are you doing here?" Adam asked Theo.

"Am doing the same thing that you are doing here" came Theo's reply. They were two of the smallest boys in the classroom.

Adam and Theo talked their way into the classroom. "Here comes the class nerds" came a voice as they entered the classroom.

They knew the owner of that voice as he was the leader of the bullies. "this will not be good for us" said Theo to Adam as they took their seats beside each other.

Adam and Theo prayed hard for the bell to ring. As soon as the bell rang, they ran out of the classroom.

Not long after they went out that Theo spotted Laura. This was the girl of his dreams.

Theo usually thought of spending quality time with Laura. "This is your chance" came a voice behind him.

"Am not sure am ready for this" Theo replied. "When will you ever be ready". The voice came again.

"Who are you talking to?". Adam asked Theo. "No one," he said.

"Do not lie to me" Adam said with a serious look on his face. Just then, Laura passed by them.

Theo could not hold himself anymore as he was imagining her body in his arms.

Laura was a dark-skinned girl. She was about 15 years old. Laura is also one of Adam and Theo's classmates.

"I could feel her body on mine as she passed". Theo said to Adam but Adam just walked away.

"What's wrong with you". Theo said running after Adam. "You are keeping secrets". Adam said.

"What secret?". Theo asked Adam. "Who were you talking to when you saw Laura?". Adam asked again.

"Since you really want to know I'll tell you". Theo said feeling reluctant. "Since I was five have always had this sort of guardian angel".

Adam sat with a look of anxiety on his face. Theo could tell how curious he was to hear the story.

As Theo was about to continue the story the bell rang. "Well continue the story later". Theo said not looking at Adam's face.

Adam moved with him back to the class feeling disappointed. He cursed the bell under his breath.

The first lesson after the break was the history lesson. Both Adam and Theo hated history.

This was because the teacher made them seat in front of the class while he was teaching.

Also, he usually used them as his tools for setting examples. This is another topic the big boys used to make a mockery of them. This time, Theo was sitting beside Laura.

His heart skipped as he took his seat. "Say something". The voice said again. "Today can be your lucky day".

At this point, Theo realized that the big boys did not bully him and Adam during the break period.

He made up his mind to at least say something. By the time he looked at Laura's face, he lost his confidence completely.

History class went on the normal way with them being the object for making practical explanations.

"When will this ever end?". Adam asked under his breath but did not have an answer to the question.

While the class was going on, Adam felt a piece of paper hitting the back of his head. At once, he knew that the big boys were at it again.

Adam was determined to put an end to this but did not know how he will do that. "I'll figure that out". He said.

"Figure what out?". Theo asked as he heard him make his last statement. "Never mind". He replied.

Theo had a feeling that all was not right. He decided to have a long talk with Adam on their way home.

Adam and Theo prayed for the bell to ring but it will not. After the History class came another and after another.

As the classes went by, Adam could see Theo looking distinctly at Laura but did not say anything.

"Will he ever talk to this girl?". Adam asked himself shaking his head feeling sorry for Theo.

Theo continued to stare at Laura and he did not even notice when she turned around.

Classes came to an end and the two decided to head back home. "Back to your story", Adam reminded Theo.

As Theo was about to speak he fell to the ground. Jack the leader of the bullies happened to be the reason for his fall.

Out of Anger, Adam pushed Jack. His boys held him as he was about to fall to the ground.

They knew how disgraceful it will be for their leader to fall to the ground. Adam and Theo knowing what they were in for took to their heels.

The bullies went after them. Adam and Theo found a place to hide until the bullies went out of sight.

"I did not know that you were that strong," said Theo as they came out of their hiding place.

"It's just a coincidence" Adam replied. Theo tried to talk about it again but Adam waved it off as a mere coincidence.

"Back to your story," Adam said looking at Theo with a face indicating seriousness. "When I was five" Theo continued with his story.

They walked home as Theo narrated how he started hearing a voice speak to him. The voice usually told him what to do when he had to do it.

"Many times I could not do what this voice said". He ended his story with a sad look on his face.

Adam kept nodding his head as Theo ended his story. "Why are you nodding," Theo asked him.

"You'll soon find out" came his reply. "We meet again," said a familiar voice as they were almost reaching their home.

It was the voice of Jack the leader of the bullies. Adam and Theo ran for safety as they knew a shortcut that could lead them home.

Theo lived opposite Adam and this was one of the reasons why they were best friends.

The two did almost everything together. They have been like this since they were seven. This was when Adam moved to the neighborhood.

Adam kept thinking of Theo's guardian angel and what it could do for them. He knew that all his ideas were just mere wild imaginations.

He somehow could not believe that Theo had a guardian angel. He just let it be as if Theo was always just having wild imaginations.

Theo's story kept coming back to him. He decided to interrogate Theo thoroughly to know more about this guardian angel.

Theo kept staring outside his window having thoughts about Laura. He wished he could have her all to himself.

Adam peeped through his window and saw Theo. He immediately knew what Theo was thinking of as he knew that look.

He decided not to disturb him till he stopped daydreaming. "Dinner is ready" Adam's mother called out to him.

Adam immediately crept out of his bed at the sound of his mum's voice. They had a silent dinner together.

"Mum, do you believe in guardian angels?" Theo asked his mother. His mother could not stop laughing at the question.

"Am serious mum" Adam said with a serious look on his face. His mum saw how serious he was and stopped laughing.

"Everyone has a guardian angel," she said. "I mean a real guardian angel that talks to you," Adam said again.

"That can't be true" his mother replied. "Theo said that he hears his guardian angel speak to him when he has to make choices". Adam answered.

"Theo may just be making up stories that you will have interest in". His mother concluded.

"Eat your food and go to bed" she added. Adam could not sleep as he kept wondering about Theo's guardian angel that speaks to him.

"Theo cannot just make up such a story," Adam said to himself. He recalled that he even heard him replying to someone that was invisible.

"I have to know more about this guardian angel," Adam said to himself as he drifted to another world.

Theo was thinking of talking to Laura. "I can't do this," he said aloud to himself. "you are just not confident in yourself" the voice came again.

Theo could not help but think of the look on Laura's face when she noticed that he was looking at her.

I will have to talk to her someday he said aloud while rolling on his bed. Theo kept thinking of Laura as he drifted to sleep.

He dreamt of how he was holding Laura in his arms. He also saw himself fighting for her in His dream.

Adam who was fast asleep dreamt of Theo's guardian angel. He dreamt of him as a Man helping them to fight with the bullies.

Also, he saw Theo's guardian angel helping them with their test and assignments. Adam dreamt of all that he could do with the help of Theo's guardian angel.

Theo also was dreaming of all that he could do to win the heart of Laura to himself. "Adam" his mother called out.

When she did not hear his voice she came into his room. She found him fast asleep. "Goodnight my baby," she said while kissing his forehead.

She put out the lamp beside him and went out of the room closing the door behind her.

Adam's mother was a single mom. She lost her husband when Adam was 7. This was the cause of them relocating to the neighborhood where Adam met Theo.

She hoped that she could give Adam the life that his father would have wanted him to have.

Every night, Adam's mother usually looked at the family's picture of them when Adam's dad was still alive.

She usually went through this process every night before going to bed. She always made sure that Adam was asleep before she went through this process.

This was to ensure that he did not see her if she got emotional and ended up bursting into uncontrollable tears.

Adam's mother went into her room to retire for the night. She read some chapters of a novel before going to bed.

Early in the morning, Adam ran as fast as his legs could carry him down the stairs. It looked as though he was really happy to go to school.

His Mon was so shocked as she did not know what had happened to him. "How was your night," she asked awaiting his response.

Adam was looking at the mirror and did not notice that his mom was talking to him. "Adam" she called again at the top of her voice.

Adam turned around and looked at his mom's face. "Good morning mom," he said with a huge smile on his face.

"I'll get ready for school," he said still wearing the big smile on his face. He ran up the stairs to his room to get ready for school.

In less than no time, Adam was back well dressed and still looking happy. "Why are you looking so bright this morning?" His mother asked looking surprisingly at him.

"Nothing" came his reply. Adam ate his food as fast as he could and took off to Theo's house. He knocked waiting for him to come out.

"That must be Adam," Theo said to his father who was taking him to school. He rushed to get to the door.

"What's up Adam," he said as they had their secret handshake. "Come and join us my dad is taking me to school today," Theo said with a big smile on his face.

Adam was happy with the offer. He went into Theo's house. In less than no time they came out together with Theo's father.

The boys jumped into the back seat as Theo's father drove them to school. On the way Adam tapped Theo.

"What if your guardian angel?". "What about it?" Theo asked looking surprised. "Do you think of the good you can achieve with your guardian angel?"

"What are you talking about?" Theo asked still looking surprised. He did not expect Adam to be so interested in this Guardian Angel. Nevertheless, he had a feeling that this Will happen.

This was also one of the reasons why he did not want to let Adam know about his guardian angel.

"We could take out the bullies together with the help of your guardian angel," He said still smiling at Theo.

"We should not be having this discussion, Adam," Theo said with a tone of finality. Adam knew that face and stopped asking about Tho's guardian angel.

He later turned to Theo still smiling. "We will continue with this discussion," he said looking very happy. Before they knew it they were at the school's gate. They waved goodbye to Theo's father as they stepped out of the car.

As they walked into the school Theo remembered the bullies. He looked at Adam and saw that he was really excited. They tried to figure out why Adam was smiling but did not get any clear reason why.

He decided not to spoil Adam's happy mood with the memories of the bullies. They moved into the class only to find out that it was very quiet.

Theo paused to look around so as not to fall into a trap. Adam pushed him out getting into the class.

It was then he discovered that he has entered into a trap. Adam sat down on his seat and let out a scream.

At this point, the whole class was roaring with laughter. Even Theo could not help with the laughter.

"What are you laughing at?"Jack asked looking angrily at Theo. "I wasn't laughing "Theo answered with a very shaky voice.

"Move to your seat now" Jack ordered. "Am okay with where I am" he replied still with a shaky voice.

Jack ran to him so as to get him to his seat. He held Theo by the collar and was shaking him furiously.

Theo feeling absurd drive his right clenched fist right into Jack's jaw and ran away. "You'll come back here for sure," Jack said trying to hide the pain he felt.

Theo came back with the English language teacher. Mrs. Stacy was the English language teacher. She was also very fond of Adam and Theo.

One of the reasons for this was because they were the smallest boys in the class. Theo was also the brightest person in the class.

He was brighter than Adam who was an average student. This was one of the reasons why the bullies disliked him.

Once they offered him the opportunity to join them. Theo rejects this offer "I prefer to stick with Adam than to be with you" Was his reply.

This also made the bullies dislike Adam. The two have been inseparable since 3rd grade. They hope to carry their friendship for more years to come.

As Mrs. Stacy entered into the class she perceived that all was not well. "Adam" she called looking in his direction.

Adam was crying with his face down as he did not want anyone to notice that he was crying. "What's happening to your friend," she asked Theo.

"Jack and his crew played a prank on him" came his reply as he was looking in the direction where they sat. The billies headed by jack occupied the back seats.

They made sure that no other student sat beside them. Among the bullies was a very intelligent boy by the name of Grayson.

He just joined the bullies recently. This was because he got tired of being bullied by them.

"Grayson are you also among those notorious boys?" Mrs. Stacy asked looking at him with a look of surprise.

Grayson bowed his head and did not let out a word. Not minding him, Mrs. Stacy comforted Adam and moved on with the class for the day.

"I hate that woman," Jack said looking at Grayson. Grayson was known as 'the wise man' as this was what Jack called him.

From the time he joined the bullies, he has been helping Jack and others with their assignments. This was the only thing he had to do while with them.

Mrs. Stacy noticed a discussion taking place among the bullies. She called out to them separating them From seating next to each other.

This made the bullies, even more, angrier as they had to seat in the midst of others who they saw to be the smallies as that was the name they called those who were not among them.
