Chapter 1 Escape From Marriage

One meter, two meters...

Summer Lin held her breath and tightly grasped the rope she made out of bed sheets. She tossed it outside and let out a sigh of relief when she saw that it finally reached the ground. She turned around and pulled the other end of the cloth to check if it was bound to the foot of the bed tightly.

Suddenly, she heard door of her deluxe hotel suite open. She gritted her teeth, grabbed the cloth, and jumped out of the window. A scream came from above. "Miss Lin... where are you?"

She was so anxious that her hands slipped and loosened her grip on the cloth. With a silent scream, she heavily landed on the ground. The spring rain drenched her hair. When she tried to stand up, she felt a sharp pain on her ankle that caused her burst into tears.

From behind her, she heard steady footsteps emerge from the quiet lane. The rain drops pouring on her head suddenly stopped. She didn't dare to look up as she could feel a familiar pressure surrounding her.

"Good," the man said in a cold voice. "Are you playing hard to get? I have to commend your performance." A sinister smile appeared at the corners of his grinning lips. "If you fall and lose your baby, then everyone will be happy, my dear wife."

Summer Lin couldn't move. The man leisurely held the black umbrella while she was sitting helplessly on the ground like a drowned rat. He looked down at her, unwilling to help her up, even if she was about to become his wife.

The phone in his hand rang. "Don't worry. She is just playing games with you. She's in the alley. Yes, she's right next to the trash can. Please come quickly and pick the bride up. Well, this place terribly suits her," he said mockingly.

He didn't bother to look at her anymore. Instead of helping her, he drew back the umbrella, turned around, and left.

As he retreated, she gazed at his broad back and the black suit he wore. He did not look like the bridegroom who was about to get married today. He seemed more like Satan, who was about to take his revenge.

The church bell rang. Summer Lin stood alone at the entrance and held the bouquet of flowers in her hands. She was wearing a luxurious wedding dress, and the lace was studded with splints. It was said that her dress was an exclusive design of the famous French designer, Display.

However, she Lin didn't feel happy at all. Even if she wore an empress's dress, in Nick An's eyes, she was still the same wretched woman sitting beside the trash can with her hair dripping.

She trembled nervously as the church doors opened in front of her. The guests directed their eyes at her. She heard the sound of whispers circulating in the hall. How could a bride marry into one of the city's richest families without bridesmaids, ring bearers, or the company of her father?

The people around her gave her scrutinizing stares. With her back straight, she elegantly and proudly walked up the red carpet. The person at the other end stared at her silently. She was going to marry Nick An, the man she had loved for more than ten years. Her heart ached in pain and she felt her belly slightly moving even though it was perfectly covered by her wedding dress.

She walked towards her future husband's side. He gently turned around and didn't bother to hold her hand. The priest looked awkwardly at the engaged couple who were looking away from each other. He rushed through the ceremony and finally asked, "Miss Summer Lin, do you take Nick An to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?"

Summer Lin fell silent. The corners of Nick An's mouth slightly lifted. He whispered in her ear, "How could you be unwilling to marry me? Why don't you tell the priest you killed my fiancee to marry me?"

In everyone else's eyes, they were just whispering like a loving couple. It was only the priest who witnessed the coldness in his eyes. It was enough to send chills down his spine.

Summer Lin's eyes began to fill with tears, but she tried her best to hold back from crying. She told herself that crying wouldn't work for him, but he accused her of killing his fiancee. How could she stay out of it?

"I didn't!" she said in a low voice. "The judge already proved my innocence. I really didn't kill anyone."

He looked down at her and his cold smile pierced her heart like a knife. "The law can't punish you, so I will punish you myself. You must pay for your crime!"

As they continued to whisper with one another, the guests started to get suspicious because the bride didn't respond to the question. The priest cleared his throat and asked again, "Miss Summer Lin, do you-"

"She does!" Nick An interrupted him. "I do, too."

The priest swallowed and said with difficulty, "Okay, God bless you. Now you can exchange the rings."

Nick picked up the diamond ring that was laying on top of the flowers and placed it on the bride's finger without sparing her a glance. The ring was so small that it got stuck on her knuckle. He pressed it down mercilessly with contempt. She bit back a cry of anguish. She was in so much pain that she almost burst into tears.

"Now you may kiss the bride..."

"Wait!" The closed doors of the church suddenly flung open with great force. All the suspicious guests turned their heads around. The bride was already acting weird today. The guests wondered whether a young man would burst into the hall to snatch the bride.

Instead, they found a middle-aged man staring at the couple with a smiling face.

Summer Lin trembled and was about to fall down from losing her balance. When the middle-aged man saw her pale face, he laughed out instead. "Nick, did you forget to invite me on such a big day?"

"Mr. Lin, please have a seat," replied Nick An in a calm voice.

"Take a seat?" The man raised his eyebrows at Nick. "I'm the bride's father. Shouldn't I be standing next to my daughter?"

When he said this, even the bridegroom's family seemed to be restless. Summer Lin's lips trembled, but she couldn't say a word. When she was about to finally lose her balance, the man next to her reached out his hand to firmly support her.

"That won't be necessary, Mr. Lin. The ritual is done. Everyone, please go to the banquet hall and enjoy yourselves."

Nick An took charge of everything. The guests had to leave despite their curiosity. The family of the bridegroom approached them. The middle-aged man lit up a cigar as if nothing had happened. "What a pity, Nick. If you had told me earlier that you were going to marry her, I would have given you some advice. Our two families have been friends for generations. Why didn't you tell me earlier?"

Chapter 2 I'm Sorry

"You, stop saying nonsense..." Summer said helplessly.

"Nonsense?" The man sneered. "I raised you for 22 years. And throughout those years, you called me Dad. Although I am not your biological dad, you clearly know that I am not spewing out nonsense!"

He leaned close to Summer and spoke in a voice that was loud enough for Nick and the others to hear. "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The child of a disloyal woman will never be honest."

He looked down at Summer's belly and added, "I heard that you are pregnant? Nick, you are a doctor. Are you sure the baby is yours? I advise that you do check it first."

Summer couldn't help but glare. "Enough! That was the matter of the last generation. I can't choose who my parents are."

"Shut up!" The man suddenly became furious. "How dare you claim that it has nothing to do with you! Didn't the two of you conspire against me for the Lin family's property? If I didn't found out, then you would have taken away the property that belongs to me. You are such an evil liar. What's your name? Summer Lin? How can you even inherit my surname?"

As the man got up to slap her across the face, she stepped back. She felt pain surge through her sprained ankle. She knew that she couldn't dodge the slap and waited for it to come. But it never came.

Nick reached out and grabbed the man's hand. With a gentle shake, the man stepped back a few steps. "Nick, don't you believe what I said?" The awkwardly man looked at Nick's parents. "You can investigate..."

"Enough. She is no longer your daughter. She is now my wife. How we are going to deal with her is a family matter. It has nothing to do with you. Mr. Lin, if you are here to celebrate, I would be very happy. But if you want to continue amusing the guests with your family scandal, then I will have to ask you to leave!" said Nick coldly.

The man gritted his teeth and spat, "If you believe this liar, sooner or later..." In a snap, several men in black suits standing beside Nick took a step forward and politely separated the man from their boss.

"Please go back and calm down, Mr. Lin." Nick straightened his collar. "You're getting old. If your mood fluctuates too much, then you'll end up suffering from a cardiovascular disease."

The man continued to curse while he was being dragged outside of the church. Nick turned his face and stared at his new wife. "What a wonderful scene, right?"

Summer's hands and feet were cold. "It has nothing to do with me. My child is indeed yours."

Nick placed his slender index finger against her tender lips. "Hush..." A myriad of emotions were dancing in his eyes. "Honey, we have time to prove it, right?"

His family members wanted to say something, but said nothing in the end. Nick simply smiled. She suddenly trembled all over. It had been twelve years, but she didn't know that the Nick she knew had such a horrible side.

In the blink of an eye, it was already dark. On their wedding night, she was locked in the hotel's presidential suite. Although the heater was on, she felt cold all over. There was nothing but a bottle of red wine soaked in an ice bucket on the table. It seemed that no one remembered that the bride was pregnant and hadn't eaten or drunk all day.

The hotel window was firmly locked. The magnificent room was like a cage and she was the lamb that was about to be slaughtered. She paced back and forth in the room. The door was suddenly unlocked. In surprise, she jumped up. When she looked back, she saw a silent child standing at the door and holding an album in her hands.

"Rain..." Her eyes turned red. She stretched out her arms and ran towards her favorite child. "I am here. Don't be afraid..."

The child stepped back. She vigilantly stared at Summer, who was standing in front of her. There was hatred looming in her big eyes.

Summer covered her mouth with her hand. The inexplicable sadness made her stop. How could she forget? She was Nick's child. Just like her father, Rain hated her for killing her mother. No matter how much she cared and loved her, she couldn't offset the hatred of killing her mother.

Tears streamed down her face. "I'm sorry, Rain. Will you trust me? I really..." She trailed off. 'How do I explain? Tell her I didn't hurt her mother? Tell her I didn't have sex with her father? Tell her I'm not pregnant with her father's child?' All the explanations became useless when she faced reality.

With a bitter smile, Summer said, "Well, you can hate me if hating me will make you feel better..." She took out a tissue and gently wiped the stains on the child's face. "Where did you go and paint? Your face is so dirty."

The child quickly moved and slapped the tissue away from Summer's hand. Rain's eyes were full of tears, demonstrating the grievance of an autistic child, who felt deceived and used. She threw the album at Summer, turned around, and ran out of the suite.

"Rain!" When Summer was about to catch up with the girl, she twisted her ankle, and felt a sharp pain. The album fell on the floor and the paintings scattered all over. Under the girl's childish brush, there was a picture of Rain with a ponytail, her parents holding her hands, and even Summer, standing behind her.

The girl wrote, "Dad, Mom, and Miss Lin, my favorite teacher."

'Sorry, Rain...' Summer fell to the floor, the tears streaming down her face. If she didn't show up, would Rain's mother, who had been separated from Nick for many years, be in her position today and instead, become his wife?

They would be a perfect match. In their wedding, there would be lovely ring bearers and they would surely have a beautiful future.

She cried loudly and climbed to the edge of the table. She reached up and pulled bottle of red wine. The ice cubes scattered all over the floor. She raised her head and poured the cold wine down her throat.

If she could drink herself to death, then she would go to hell with her unborn child. They were not liked by others. What was the point of clinging to life?

She cried until got drunk. She then lay on the floor and slowly became unconscious.

"Nick, I'm going to climb up the tree and send the bird home," said a little girl.

"Summer, it's dangerous. I'll be the one to do it, okay?" Nick anxiously stood under the tree as he watched her climb up.

"I can do it myself," the little girl pouted. "Just catch me if I fall. I'm not afraid as long as you are here."

Chapter 3 Disappearance

"You naughty girl." Nick smiled helplessly, but his eyes were full of affection.

The little bird was finally safe in its nest. But Summer suddenly lost her footing. "Ahhh! Nick!" She screamed as she fell head first.

Nick widened his arms and rushed to catch her in his arms. As he caught her, he fell backwards on the ground.

He felt pain his right arm as he had a broken bone. A falling branched pierced through his earlobe and blood began to gush out of the wound. "I'm sorry, Nick..." She cried in his arms. It was painful for her to see him injured.

"Silly girl." His face was pale. "I am glad you are fine. At least I won't have to get my ear pierced in the future. You will have to buy me an ear stud."

Tears blurred her eyes. The ear stud she had bought for him was shining in front of her. She reached out her hand and gently touched his earlobe. She called out the name in the bottom of her heart: Nick.

She felt someone grasp her wrist. Feeling the painful grip, she woke up. The ear stud she saw in her dream was still the same, but the person who wore it no longer loved her.

He narrowed his eyes and smelled her breath, catching the strong stench of alcohol. He raised his eyebrows and asked, "Are you drinking to celebrate that you finally got what you wanted?"

Trying to bear the pain, she cynically laughed. "Yes. Would you like a glass of wine? To celebrate my failed marriage escape?"

He pinched her chin all of a sudden. She looked up into his angry eyes. Nick gritted his teeth and spat, "Don't be so sentimental! You came up with this trick because you knew that with the power of my family, even if you escape to the ends of the earth, we can still find you. You were only play hard to get. Do you think I will be fooled by you?"

Tears welled up in her eyes. She smiled and said, "It turns out that I'm so intelligent. I didn't know it until now. I'm flattered. At that time, I was just worried that I might fall and die. That would have made the stock prices of your hotel drop by the daily limit."

He glanced around, but stopped when he saw the paintings that were scattered all over the floor.

"Mr. An..." Someone rushed to the door. "Something bad has happened. Rain is missing!"

Nick stood up immediately. "What? Go and find her!" He pulled his wife up from the floor. He grabbed her by the neck and roared, "What did you say to my daughter?" He gritted his teeth and spat, "Do you think that your child will be my only child after you drive Rain away? Do you think that I will love you and your child? Summer, dream on!"

She felt his hand loosen, but she could barely see any trace of emotions on his face. At that moment, she really hoped that he would strangle her to death. That way, she wouldn't have to face the bitter reality.

When he awkwardly loosened his grip, he said, "When I find Rain, I'll settle accounts with you!"

Her body feebly drooped at the edge of the table, but she gritted her teeth and stood up. "I am coming with you! I might know where she went."

"Stop pretending to be kind." He already ran out of the room.

Stubbornly, she stumbled and closely followed him. She awkwardly lifted the hems of the wedding dress, and placed her swollen feet in the exquisite high-heeled wedding shoes. Every step she took was painful. She gritted her teeth and took off her shoes. Instead of waiting for her, Nick strode into the pouring rain.

Her heart ached, but not for herself. Rain was only five years old and couldn't speak at all. The weather was terrible. She couldn't imagine what would happen to her. She saw Nick get into the car and quickly tried to catch up with him. Along the way, her wedding dress caused her to trip and fall on the ground.

The gorgeous white wedding gown was soaked by the rain. Although she was dressed like an elegant swan, she was still the ugly duckling. When she rolled up the hemlines of her dress, her knees and palms were in burning in pain.

The windshield wipers of Nick's car clacked back and forth. She struggled to get up and slowly tried to approach his car. He silently stared at her in the rearview mirror. He used to love her dearly and now, she was even the mother of his child, but...

He gritted his teeth, kicked open the door, and pulled her into the back seat. "That's enough. If you want to waste my time, I'm sorry. You will be disappointed! Now tell me where you think she might go!"

Summer's teeth chattered from being out in the cold. She had no strength left to argue with him anymore. "Kindergarten. She must have gone to the drawing studio in the kindergarten. Trust me..."

He narrowed his eyes at her and bellowed, "You better not lie to me!" He turned around and stepped on the gas. He threw his black suit jacket at her, hitting her in the face.

She held the jacket, which was still warm. "Put it on!" he said coldly. "There are many ways to torture you. However, I don't want you to freeze to death in my car!"

The heat in the vehicle slowly warmed the air. Summer tightly held the jacket against her chest, trembling. The familiar fragrance flowed into her nose, and her tears slowly dropped on the jacket. "Rain, please stay safe..." she whimpered and prayed.

"Yes, you'd better pray. Otherwise..." The man in front of her gripped the steering wheel so hard that his hands began to turn pale. Otherwise, how could he face Rain's mother, the woman he loved so much?

When the car stopped at the gate of the kindergarten, it was dark inside. "How could Rain be in here alone?" Nick asked.

"It's possible." Summer got out of the car. "She knows how to take the free bus. She knows the way coming here. Last time she ran away, she ended up coming here as well. She loves drawing very much. I'm sure she will definitely be here." It seemed more like she was persuading herself, rather than Nick.

The deaf security guard had already fallen asleep. Summer rolled up the hemlines of her dress and began to climb the door railing. Rain was thin, so she could easily get through the railing. However, Summer was not as thin and couldn't get through it.

Suddenly, she felt her strapless wedding dress being lifted from behind. She couldn't help but scream. When she turned around, her eyes met his. He quickly jumped over the railing, with her in his hand. She pitifully stumbled forward and covered her breast with one hand. She was afraid that the gown would drop on the spot.

"Rain, Rain..." Summer helplessly called out. "I'm Miss Lin. It's me. Can you please answer me? I'll draw with you. I'll..."

She suddenly heard something being knocked over from the studio. She quickly ran towards the direction where the sound came from. "She must be in there! Rain, Rain!"
