At No.1 Riverside Restaurant in Silk City...
While parking, Camille Davis scraped the car door by mistake. She looked around to see if there was any witness.
The car was a new birthday gift from her father, John Davis, and Camille was not yet familiar with its operation.
As a poor driver, Camille scuffed her cars frequently. Since three years ago, when her mother died, John had given her several vehicles through compensation. Every time she changed a car or sent one to a garage, the paparazzi shot the picture and exposed it on the entertainment headline.
Camille initially did not care much about it, but the frequent reporting eventually made her embarrassed.
Today was Camille's birthday and the first anniversary of their acquaintance.
Camille was walking towards a restaurant when she heard a group of its employees who headed home talking.
"Will Brandson, the young master of the Brandson Family, rented our restaurant today and had the manager turn off the monitors?"
"Yes, Mr. Brandson not only charters the whole restaurant but also cooks in person. He asked the waiter to leave early as he wanted to serve the meal. The manager also said that Mr. Brandson prepared a cake. As for what it is inside that, make a guess."
"A marriage proposal? But I haven't heard that Mr. Brandson is in love."
"That's what you don't know. A celebrity can remove news about him from the hot search list within minutes, let alone a figure from the upper class. Less attention they wanted, more serious they were."
"You know something?"
"Of course, let me tell you that Mr. Brandson has been photographed with someone many times."
"Do you have any evidence?"
"Of course! I have a friend who is a journalist and has caught Mr. Brandson with..."
"With whom?"
"The one from the Davis Family..."
"Did they admit it?"
"If they had done, it must have caused a sensation in Silk City. Mr. Brandson was so nervous that he bought my friend's camera and gave him a huge amount of money for secrecy."
"How much money?"
"It covers his whole spending in half a year."
As the voice faded away, Camille began to recall.
When had this happened? And why had not Will mentioned it to her?
But... That was not a big deal.
Two years ago, less than a year after her mother's death, her father brought a woman home and said he wanted to marry her. Camille found it unacceptable and strongly opposed it, so her relationship with John dropped to a freezing point.
For some time, their communication only happened when Camille thanked John for the new cars' gift.
Such a situation continued until Will showed up.
John, content with Will, tried his best to march Camille up with him. And the icy relationship between her and her father started to thaw.
Apart from being undoubtedly considerate, Will was closely aged and also from a wealthy family.
He seemed perfectly suitable to be her husband.
Nonetheless, Camille had no feelings for him.
But, what did it matter? Not every pair of people who ended up as a couple were affectionate towards each other in the first place. Such examples were common around Camille.
Love was something hard to come by, especially for those who came from a wealthy family.
"How are you?" Camille asked.
"Fine, let's cheer," Will replied as he filled their glasses with wine.
Will had nervously drunk glasses of rum containing intensive alcohol. In several minutes after he got seated, he had exchanged glasses with Camille a few times.
Even though Camille was a good drinker, she was getting dizzy.
Camille thought it was because of the rum, but after a while, she felt weak and fell to the ground.
"Will..."
Camille was too weak to get up. Her eyelids were inexplicably heavy, and her voice was faint, but Will did not respond.
Camille was too weak to get up. Her eyelids were inexplicably heavy, and her voice was faint, but Will did not respond.
At this moment, sounds of heels hitting the floor approached.
Camille barely managed to raise her eyelids, seeing a pair of high-heeled shoes.
As she continued to lift her eyes, she found Will, who remained careless at the sight of her fall, and Jade Davis, whose presence was strange, were standing side by side.
Jade looked down on Camille with an expression of superiority, while Will's eager eyes settled on the former, and his hand moved on her waist up and down.
At the sight of the present scene, many things before suddenly made sense to Camille. No wonder that she occasionally smelt a different perfume from her own on Will and that Will was so anxious to buy the camera after being secretly photographed by that reporter.
It was all explained.
Suddenly, there was a sharp pain in Camille's left hand on which Jade had stepped.
"Bitch." With a smug smile, Jade raised her toes and revolved her foot on Camille's hand around the heel with full force.
The unbearable feeling of pain made Camille recover some strength.
"Why do you prevent my mom from getting married to John? After so many years of our waiting, that chance finally comes as your mother, Bonnie Davis, who was the main obstacle, died. Even she could not stop it when she was alive. What makes you think that you could?"
Too weak to reply, Camille could only stare at Will with confusion.
Seeing this, Jade put her hand on Will's chest and laughed, "Will, that bitch is looking at you."
"Disgusting." With an expression of repulsion, Will splashed the wine in his other hand onto Camille's face, "Disgusting and dull woman, you think I like you? If not for Jade, how could it be possible that I was willing to put up with the humiliation and serve obediently you every day?"
The cold rum hit Camille's face, sobering her up a bit.
Jade was satisfied with Will's action: "Bitch, you're as silly as your mother."
Camille felt a flame smoldering inside herself but could do nothing but mumble some words which sounded like a curse at Jade.
Jade moved her foot and kicked Camille in the stomach.
Camille was so painful that she curled up to cover her abdomen.
Jade laughed and started to flirt outrageously with Will. After a while, she said, "Honey, do it."
"Okay."
Reluctant to stop, Will kept his hands on Jade's body while nodding.
At that moment, Camille, who had been lying on the floor, staggered to her feet, grabbed her bag from the table, and ran out.
When Camille fell onto the floor, she was lucky enough to bring down a butter knife, which was now lodged in her thigh, causing constant pain but keeping her awake.
As Camille rushed to the restaurant door and switched off the main electric switch, the entire waterfront went dark.
Camille had no idea about their intention, but judging from the fact that Will remained conscious after drinking the same bottle of wine with her, she knew that they had made comprehensive arrangements and drugged her glass beforehand.
Will revealed his considerate disguise before her, picked a location far from downtown, turned off the monitors, as well as dismissed the restaurant staff in advance...
Camille was acutely aware that they had some conspiracy about which she had little knowledge against her.
She had to find a way to escape, no matter what.
It was the only restaurant on the waterfront. Since it was cleared out, there was a slim chance that Camille could find any passerby for help.
Camille hid by a bush and dialed her phone in a panic.
The phone rang many times, but no one answered. Camille was about to give up in desperation when she finally got through.
Without waiting for a reply, Camille hurriedly said, "I'm at the No.1 Riverside Restaurant. Help me!"
The phone was snatched away before she finished her words.
Jade slapped Camille across the face and said in a devil-like voice, "You are so smart to turn off the restaurant's lights."
"But why do you forget the light on the screen when you call?"
Jade glanced at the phone screen and smiled, "Father."
The voice on the other end of the line was so clear that even Camille heard it, "Do it carefully and quickly."
"Of course." Jade hung up the phone.
So, even her father was involved in the conspiracy?
But why?
Camille became truly frightened, "What do you want?"
Jade scoffed, "Camille, you are so stupid. It might have been helpful if you just called the police. You are bound to die today."
Death?
Before Camille could think more, her face was covered by Will with a handkerchief which smelt strange, rendering her unconscious.
Camille woke up in the new car, which was a birthday present from John.
It was dark all around her. Except for the headlights, she could clearly see the cliff ahead.
Camille sat in the passenger seat, still unable to move a muscle. Will dragged her down and put her in the driver's seat.
Not far away was Jade leaning against another car, talking to someone on the phone with a smile like a flower on the face.
Will ruffled Camille's bangs, revealing a grim look. "You're awake? We have waited for you to wake up for quite a while so that most portions of the drug in your body dissolve. Otherwise, the autopsy will be very troublesome. Besides, Jade is so kind that she wants you to know how you will die."
Camille was still weak, saying in a feeble tone, "She wants me to watch myself die?"
"Don't worry. People will think you drive off a cliff because of drunkenness. You've been in too many entertainment headlines because of cars. So there will be hardly suspicion about your accident."
A chill ran through Camille's heart. Had John begun their conspiracy by giving her cars since three years ago when her mother died?
Were the so-called compensation, father's love, and all just a part of a ridiculous conspiracy?
Camille panicked and tried to persuaded Will to let her go, "Will, I never do anything harmful to you. Why are you doing this?"
"Why? Camille, I love Jade, and you're a hindrance in our way."
Will strapped Camille in.
Camille tried to stay calm by closing her eyes to avoid the sight of the cliff ahead and thought about solutions, "What about her?"
"Naturally, Jade loves me too."
"Love? Look at her. Why does she have the mood to chat with someone on the phone while asking you to kill me? See how happy she looks! She even did not smile in such a happy way to you in the restaurant."
Will looked over at Jade.
"You did all the work. You asked me to go to the restaurant and drove me here, right? In all the monitors along the way, people will see only you and me in the same car. She appeared to be utterly unrelated to the case. And when the police investigate, you must be the prime suspect and get into trouble."
