"You're two weeks pregnant, Luna Selene."
I arched my brows, utterly surprised when I heard the pack doctor break the news to me. I had no idea whether to be happy or sad, but I wanted to show my happiness.
A smile carved at the corners of my lips, and I rubbed the tears that brimmed the corners of my eyes clean because the news was worth it.
I had been waiting to hear this for three years after I got married to my husband, Alpha Leo.
Three years of whispered gossip about my inability to bear a child. Three years of watching other women cradle their babies while I remained empty. Three years of wondering if I would ever be enough for my husband, Alpha Leo.
But today, everything would change.
I still remembered the day Leo accepted me as his mate. I was just a maid in the Blood Moon Pack, invisible and unimportant. But when his eyes met mine across that crowded ballroom, his wolf had recognized me instantly.
"You're mine," he'd growled, pulling me close. "My Luna. My mate. My everything."
That night, under the moonlight, he'd held me and whispered promises I'd cherished for three years. A family. A future. A life together.
And now, finally, I could give him the one thing he needed most-an heir for the Moon Shadow Pack.
"Luna Selene, are you all right?" I immediately jerked out of my thoughts when I felt a hand touch my shoulders.
"Oh, oh, yes doctor, I'm fine."
I rose to my feet and picked up my bag. I had the calmest voice and a sweet smile that always melted people's hearts.
"Congratulations once again, Luna."
"Thank you so much."
Minutes later, I was outside, phone in hand. I dialed Leo. Once. Twice. Ten times. No answer. Strange.
I drove home, my heart racing with anticipation. I would tell him in person. I would make his favorite meal, set the table with candles, and surprise him with the news.
When I arrived at our cottage, I noticed something odd. Leo's study door was slightly ajar. He never left it open.
I stepped inside and my eyes fell on his desk. A letter lay half-buried under his papers-cream-colored stationery I didn't recognize. The handwriting was elegant. Feminine.
I picked it up and read the words that would shatter my world.
I'm coming home, my love. Wait for me.
Forever yours,
S
My hands trembled. Who was S? And why did Leo have a letter from someone calling herself "my love"?
I tried to push the thought away. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe it was an old letter from before we met. Leo loved me. He had accepted me as his mate when no one else would.
I went to the kitchen, cooked his favorite meal, and set the table. Then I waited.
One hour. Two hours. Three.
Even after three hours, there was still no sign of Leo. I tried calling again, but it went straight to voicemail.
My chest tightened with worry. Where was he?
A few minutes later, exhaustion overtook me, and I dozed off on the couch.
I was awakened by the sound of the door and I jerked upright in fear. It was still dark, but I could feel Leo's presence. His scent filled the room-but there was something different about it. Something cold.
"Leo?" I called out softly.
He didn't respond. Instead, he stood in the doorway, his silhouette looming over me like a shadow I couldn't escape.
"You deceived me," he said, his voice like ice.
My blood ran cold. "What? Leo, I don't understand-"
"I want a divorce!"
He yelled at me, but I had no idea what was really going on. Staring at him with watery eyes, I begged to know what my offence was. I had always been an obedient Luna and most importantly, a supportive Luna to him. What had I done?
"What is going on, Leo, please talk to me. Say something! Say anything please!" I begged him, now on my knees.
"You heard me, Selene. I want a divorce, and I want you gone from my life for good."
The tears that I had been trying so hard to hold back finally fell from my eyes. I didn't want to leave because, over the years, I had grown to love my husband with everything I had. If the reason Leo was saying all these was because I couldn't conceive, then I needed to break the news to him now.
"I'm pregnant! We're having a baby together." I informed him with the hope that he could change his mind, but his words shocked me even harder.
"Get rid of the baby. I don't want someone like you bearing my child and heir to my pack." His voice was ice.
Those words came as a shock to me, and they made me think I was in a dream, a bad dream that I wanted to wake up from. Was this man standing right in front of me really my husband? Was this the same Leo I had met on my eighteenth birthday?
"Why? Why are you doing this to me? To our baby?"
He seemed even more angry when I mentioned the baby. I couldn't believe his heartlessness, and it made me think he almost wasn't human at all.
With all the coldness and inhumane nature in him, he declared, "I, Alpha Leo Knight, reject you, Selene Grace, as my Luna and my mate. I never want you to show your filthy face in my pack ever again."
All I could feel at that moment was pain.
Leo was my first, and I always prayed he would be my last.
I had never felt the pain of a mate bond being broken before, but it was brutal. The pain was so intense and I could feel it shattering all of me inside.
I groaned in pain hoping Leo would even look at me, but even my pain wasn't enough to make him spare me a glance.
"Leo..." I gasped, reaching for him. "Leo, please..."
He didn't even look at me.
He turned and walked away, his footsteps echoing through the empty cottage. Each step felt like a knife in my chest.
Broken, I clutched my stomach and lost consciousness in agony.
I woke up to an empty bed and a shattered heart, still unable to believe what had happened.
Leo's words kept echoing in my head.
I want a divorce.
Get rid of the baby.
I, Alpha Leo Knight, reject you...
The way he spoke to me last night made me feel like he had a deep hatred buried down there for me.
I rose to my feet and reached for my phone on the couch. Leo had actually blocked my line from calling him.
I suddenly realized I had not even the slightest idea where he could be or what he had gone through!
What was happening? Why had he changed so suddenly? One day, we were happy, or so I thought, and the next, he was throwing me away like I meant nothing.
I remembered the letter on his desk. I'm coming home, my love. Wait for me.
Who was she?
With trembling fingers, I called Zoey, my best friend. Zoey's family were super rich, and since she was the only child, she grew up having everything a child could ever ask for. We met in high school, and we were both the smartest kids.
She picked up almost immediately after the first ring.
"Selene? What's wrong?"
"Have you seen Leo?" Hearing her voice almost made me break down in tears.
"No, is something wrong?"
"I need to find him." My voice cracked. "Please, Zoey."
There was a pause. "I'll inquire from as many people as I can. Meet me at our usual place in an hour."
Thirty minutes later, I sat in the restaurant, staring at nothing, my water untouched.
The waiter glanced at me with concern. I must have looked terrible-swollen eyes, pale skin, lips dry and cracked.
Zoey rushed in, her eyes widening when she saw me. "Look at you-oh goodness, you look so horrible, sissy."
I couldn't hold it anymore. The words spilled out. "I'm pregnant."
Her face lit up. "That's amazing! Leo must be-"
"He rejected me." The tears came again. "Last night. He rejected me and our baby. I never expected I'd lose my husband the exact day I received the best news of my life."
Zoey gasped. For a moment, she looked like she wanted to say something, then stopped. "That... that doesn't make sense. Are you sure there isn't some misunderstanding?"
"I don't know." I wiped my face. "He kept saying I deceived him. But I don't know what I did wrong."
"That fucking bastard needs some sense shoved into his brain." Zoey scoffed, anger flashing in her eyes. "I'm going to find out what the hell is going on."
She made a call, her voice sharp and commanding. When she hung up, her face was grim.
"A friend found him."
"Where?"
"An exclusive clubhouse." She showed me a photo-Leo, surrounded by people I didn't recognize. Staring at the surrounding, I could tell it was fucking expensive.
"How do we get in?"
She smiled confidently. "My family partially owns the club. We can get in without a penny."
I rose to my feet immediately. I wasn't ready to waste another second. What on earth could have been so severe to make my husband go to a club? Leo always cared so much about his reputation, and he would never put it at stake for anything.
We quickly headed for the club, and as Zoey and I entered, I could inhale the strong stench of alcohol and cigarettes. The atmosphere was so lively, people were dancing, drinking, laughing-oblivious to the storm raging inside me.
Then I saw the image of a man and a woman kissing on a small stage in the center of the room.
My heart nearly sank. I couldn't conclude if it was Leo or not because he was backing me, but a terrible feeling crept into my chest, telling me something was wrong.
The man's hands were wrapped around her waist so lovingly, and I watched as the crowd cheered them on. The way he held her-it was intimate. Familiar. Painful.
The crowd cheering them on. When they broke apart, the man turned-and my world stopped.
It was Leo!
My husband!
Immediately our eyes met, his eyes found mine. For a split second, something flickered in them. Surprise? Guilt? Then it was gone, replaced by cold indifference.
But what made my blood run cold was the woman who turned to face me.
She had my face.
The same beauty mark at the corner of her left eye. The same moon-shaped tattoo on her left shoulder.
I had always had to hide the mark on my shoulder because my parents made me believe it was an abomination. I thought I was the only one who had such a mark in the entire world.
I stared at her, unable to breathe.
Then she smiled-a smile that looked exactly like mine-and slipped her hand into Leo's.
And he let her.
My husband, who had rejected me just last night, was now holding hands with another woman. A woman who looked exactly like me.
The room spun around me.
Who the hell was she? And why the fuck did she have my marks, my face-my everything?!!
I stood at my spot, transfixed at what I had just seen.
I always thought I was the only one who had such a mark in the entire world, but today I was proved wrong. Again, I felt even more insulted and disgusted that Leo had cheated on me with a girl who looked like me.
Zoey, clearly furious, walked up to the stage and snatched the microphone from the DJ. "Zillion Club doesn't support cheaters, you over there, how dare you kiss someone else's mate?"
The entire venue immediately went silent, and murmurs from the crowds filled the air.
"Why is she here?"
"Why do they look so much alike? Who's the real Selene here?"
Hearing people murmur things like this, I realized that no one knew I was Leo's Luna and wife.
Zoey wasn't having it. "That's Luna Selene Knight, Alpha Leo's wife! And that man beside her lookalike is her husband!"
The murmurs grew louder. Leo's expression darkened. He signaled to the DJ.
"Continue playing," he ordered. "Everyone go back to dancing."
He didn't even acknowledge me.
I felt the heat of humiliation burn through my chest. I deserved an explanation. I deserved to know why my husband was publicly kissing another woman.
In my state of anger, and anxiety, the lady walked to me and extended her hand for a handshake.
"Hi, you're Selene right?"
I didn't give her a reply, or take her hand. I simply continued to stare at her, wondering what was going on in her mind. She must be happy Leo had kissed her earlier.
"It's all a silly misunderstanding here. Maybe your husband thought I was you, and he simply just rushed to me before I could say a word to him."
That was impossible. Leo knew breaking the mate bond would leave me weak all night-he couldn't have mistaken her for me. Besides, I still bore his mark on my neck, and it wouldn't fade for another three days.
"I hope you don't take this silly mistake and joke as a real thing."
Zoey came to my rescue and pushed the bitch away from me. "Get away from her you slut! How dare you foolishly lie to her face?"
"Fine, we're just best friends okay."
Zoey scoffed aloud, "There's everything wrong in kissing your best friend. Are you that cheap of a slut?"
I could see the rage in the lady's eyes, and I had to speak up before she could hit Zoey.
"That's enough. If anyone is to explain what happened here, then it should be my husband." I said.
I prevented Zoey from doing so and asked her to leave. "I'll handle things from here, thank you, Zoey."
She held my hand, "You sure?" And I shook my head. Because Zoey was gone, I guess she saw it as a better chance to intimidate me more.
As expected, she came close to me, her voice dropping to a whisper only I could hear.
"Leo only married you because you look like me. " She smiled sweetly, patting my cheek. "Now that I'm back, you're nothing. "
My anger was nearly at its peak, and my fingers were itching so badly to slap her hard across the face. My eyes grew so cold with anger, and I watched her step backwards from me till she was close enough to Leo.
"You don't have to stare at me like you're gonna strangle me. I'm sorry if my words offended you, Selene."
For some reason, Leo didn't seem to detect her malice and to him, it seemed like I was bullying her. She hid behind him but gave me a malicious smile in return.
"I told you before, Selene, I want a divorce. The papers will be ready today, and once it's signed, you should get the hell out of my life. Whatever I do with my life from now on is no longer any of your business. Remember, I already rejected you, Selene."
"A scheming, malicious, and despicable woman like you does not deserve to be my Luna."
The words were like barbed wire, tearing at my heart with every syllable as tears rolled down my eyes. I was publicly humiliated by my husband, and the only thing I could do was stand there hearing the crowds tell the real story that I was never aware of.
It appears that Leo and Scarlett grew up together as childhood friends. However, when she reached adult age, she left him and married another powerful Alpha who was her mate. This left Leo heartbroken for days until he found me 3 years ago at a party, and because I was his mate and I looked so much like the lady he loved from his childhood, he married me immediately so he could forget about her.
I also got to understand that was the reason Leo was always reluctant to introduce me to anybody in the pack.
"Why? Why are you doing this to me, Leo? I've done absolutely nothing to deserve this. I've always been a good wife to you, Leo so why?"
"Because the real woman I love is back. Scarlett here is my mate, and she's the Luna I want."
Those words shattered my every soul. He held her hand tight making my stomach churn in irritation as I stared at both of them.
My wolf, Lena, was so furious that I almost rushed at her and yanked her hair.
"You bitch!! How dare you try to destroy my home!" I yelled so loud and rushed towards her, but the moment I yanked her hair, she fell on the floor and passed out immediately.
"Are you crazy!" I heard Leo's cold voice which made me scared. Leo squatted down and carried her in his arms staring at me with cold eyes.
"Le...Leo, please..." I suddenly felt a sharp and unsettling pain in my stomach and fell on the floor holding his left leg. "Please, don't leave me. Don't leave our baby."
One of Leo's friends came towards me and pushed me aside from him. I groaned in pain. I watched him sneer sarcastically as he stared at me.
"Was our love ever a joke to you all these years?"
He hesitated for a moment, but then firmly responded, "Yes, yes it was, Selene. I must have been blind all these years to have seen you as Scarlett's substitute and to ever think that you could replace her in my life, especially as a poor and lowly Omega."
All Leo ever saw was an Omega and not his wife. I couldn't believe how heartless he was.
"Fine, I'm worthless, but not your child. Not our baby, Leo, please. Stay for our child if you need a reason to stay with me."
"Don't you fucking use that thing inside of you as an excuse to tie me down, Selene. I fucking know that child isn't mine. What was I ever expecting from an Omega without a good family reputation? I never want to see your filthy face near my pack house else, I'll decide the fate of you and that bastard of a child!"
He called our child a bastard!!!
People murmur about how stupid and desperate I was because of my status. Tears rolled down my eyes in uncontrollable quantities, and in my anguish, I shut my eyes and lost consciousness, hoping I would wake up from this horrible dream.
